I am so angry and frustrated with East Wake Animal Hospital right now. I called them on Wednesday,…read moreApril 3rd to let them know that our little Yorkie mix had to be euthanized Easter morning & requested to get a copy of all her records... The lady that answered never once had 1 ounce of sympathy nor did she give any type of sympathy at all and just said she'd email them over. When I said, "I appreciate the condolences by the way", she literally hung up on me. I called back and spoke with another lady & told her what happened and that I wasn't finished with what I needed & before I was even able to tell her what had happened on the previous call, she immediately said she was so sorry about our pup. I thanked her & explained what happened on my first call and proceeded to let her know that I wanted to request no further communication regarding potential appointments for our fur baby because it would be too difficult to get those phone calls or emails; she completely understood. I asked to speak with a manager, so she had one call as soon as they were available. When the manager called, she did nothing but defend the first lady in every way. And the comments she responded with would be considered "gas-lighting"... like "I'm sorry you took it that way." But whatever. I will NEVER take another pet there. I am appalled at how they handled everything. They tried to say that that is completely unlike the lady, she has been there for the past eight years, has been well-known for her sympathy for with customers and that they think it was just a misunderstanding. She told me, "I'm sorry if that's how you took it." She said she talked to the girl before calling me and said that she said there was a pause on the line so she must have thought that I had hung up. I said no ma'am there was no pause at all. Then, when I told the manager that I knew there was nothing that could be done about it now, but that I just wanted to let them know that I felt like having to euthanize my dog could have been avoided had my concerns initially been addressed when she started showing signs of issues a few years ago. I just wanted to give them my feedback and opinion in hopes that maybe it could help someone else. I explained to her that I had talked to them a few times about her constantly licking the air, licking her paws constantly and smacking her mouth that made me feel like there was some issues going on because that wasn't normal for her, but I felt like I was just being brushed off. When the vet just brushed it off when I talked to them about it, it made me feel like maybe I was just overthinking it. When she was seen at the urgent care vet that we had to take her to to have her euthanatized, we mentioned it to them and that vet said that was a clear indication of nausea in dogs. However, it kept seeming like the manager kept trying to put blame back on us. I told her that I didn't feel that we would have been at that point had my initial concerns been addressed when I brought her in about it a few years ago! Then I brought her in in January due to vomiting & diarrhea with blood. They said it was likely a food sensitivity. We had bloodwork done and they said her bloodwork looked normal. Taking their advice, we gave her chicken and rice but she got to where she couldn't digest the rice. That Saturday night she wasn't acting right. Then, Easter morning her stool was nothing but blood. After getting her records & reviewing her bloodwork, her labs were NOT normal! There were 4 results that were abnormal & all levels indicated signs of disease or cancer! Looking back at her symptoms, we believe it was cancer of some kind. But had they listed to us, we may have had a chance to help her! That did NOT do their job. I know it's been a couple weeks since everything happened but it's been a very difficult time for us. I also know two other people whose experience there has been VERY questionable and their dog having to be euthanized due to issues with care received!

My elderly dog had a serious infection and was prescribed antibiotics. I was told to call the office and update the doctor which I did. When I didn't hear back I reached out again. I was told the doctor would be returning calls after hours which was perfectly acceptable IF she would have actually called. After no response (3 days) I called another veterinarian and made an appointment. They said they would call and request my dog's records. Interestingly about 40 minutes after my call to the new office I got a call from Southern Heart saying I had new medication to pick up. I'm really not sure what happened but if the staff didn't give her messages shame on them. If she just didn't return my call shame on her for not acknowledging and apologizing. When I had the courtesy to respond and explain I wouldn't be picking up the medication because we were going elsewhere the response was total disinterest. I honestly didn't think the practice was so overwhelmed with clients that they could be so dismissive and uncaring.

I have had two devastating experiences with my dogs in recent years that were made easier because of my knowledgable, compassionate vet. The first was bringing a new Irish setter home only to have him become very ill within days. I found Doctor Connie through my breeder friend, after calling another vet who had never heard of HODs, a rare autoimmune disease in large breeds, that my poor, unlucky puppy had. Doctor Connie listened, researched and called me on her off time throughout the long, relatively experimental treatment process. She went way over and beyond expectations! I'm not an easy dog owner. I do my own research, have many theories and opinions! She made me feel heard and I know I must have been annoying!! My puppy is a healthy 4 year old thanks to her! 2 days ago I brought my 12 year old to her, fearing the worst as he stopped eating and was dehydrated and could barely walk by the time we saw her. She LISTENED, offered me a plan to diagnose. Explained her reasoning. Listened patiently to all my, probably stupid, questions and considered my financial situation and feelings on treatment goals. 3 1/2 hours later my dog was feeling more comfortable but his diagnosis was bleak. But I knew I could trust Dr. Connie. I left her office able to just focus on loving my boy, knowing we were giving him the best! He deteriorated very quickly and despite all efforts I had to bring him back to let him go. And you all know it's never easy but my baby was loved on by the staff and his passing was as peaceful as can be. As difficult as loss is, because of Doctor Connie and her loving, efficient staff, I can at least take comfort knowing my baby boy had the best care there can be and was loved right up till the very end. She may be hard to get in to see sometimes but that's because she's the best and takes her time with her clients!! Once you have her take care of your baby, you'll never need to question if you could have done more for your beloved pet!

Still, at 2 in the morning, a really awesome doctor talked me through why I shouldn't worry, got to know my guy, and since there was nothing wrong with him, I didn't get charged anything. The fact that I was not nickel-and-dimed for a problem that didn't exist earned this place my trust. Last night, one of the worst things happened. My dog of 15 years went from being her sparkle-eyed, tippy-tappy, singing and dancing self in the span of 24 hours and by midnight, she was puking blood and couldn't get her tongue back in her mouth. I came straight over. There's always this shame with vets. I've had experiences where I can see the looks, the grumbles, the judgements. When you're poor, you let appointments slide, you want to do better for your animals, but you can't always. My husband and I have been battling foreclosure for the last year or so, and we let some things that didn't seem pressing slide. The woman at the front desk didn't shame me when I said I wasn't up to date on Molly's vaccines or bloodwork. She didn't shame me when I talked about her bad teeth. She saw the scared human in me and offered grace. I didn't get her name or the nurse tech's name, but the doctor introduced herself as Angel. Different pronunciation, I'm probably spelling it wrong actually. But it fits. She was exactly what I imagine an angel to be. She was direct. She told me my options. She explained that my dog was essentially a 90 year old in dog years. I couldn't afford the treatment to even try to get my girl back. End stage kidney disease. My husband wasn't with me, so I had to face this decision alone. Angel sat with me, held my hands, offered what comfort she could, asked about how I was feeling. I've been through a euthanasia before with another dog. I was not allowed to hold my other dog. I was panicked and I knew my distress was scaring her, but I couldn't hold it in. I watched as her pupils dilated and her heart stopped and her body went limp. I read once that your sense of hearing is the last thing you lose in death, and for years I have carried the guilt of knowing that as her soul slipped away, the last thing she heard was her mama crying "no, oh my god, please no." But Wake Veterinary Medical Center gave me the chance and the ability to be strong for my baby. I was settled in a quiet room with my baby in my arms. I held her as she went. I held her after she was gone, until her body cooled, whispering how much I loved her. They didn't take away the pain of grief for me, but they eased the trauma of it. Molly's final moments were calm. She was held and safe and warm. That's more than my others got. I know I told the nurse tech that I knew it wasn't her job to manage *my* emotions, but she stayed and listened anyway. She held my baby like it was her baby. That's not common, from what I've seen. Something awful was not compounded on by judgmental stares and rolled eyes. I didn't get the chance to stop and thank them. I was numb by the time I left, just focused on not crashing my car on the way home. But I really, really wanted the people of this place to know how much everything they did meant to me. All three of the women I interacted with, thank you. You gave me something in my worst moments so I was able to be strong for my brave girl. Words aren't enough here. Just, thank you.

Thinking something was wrong we brought him here. The vet recommended we do a $7k MRI, when we suggested other things like pumping the stomach or some other course of action- they said it wasn't advised. After we DEMANDED to get our kitty back, they undid the signing of our papers to euthanize the little kitty and they gave us a little lecture about how the cat had been given an IV of tap water by us and it was bad because my mom had put water in his bag or something (happened before I got there, but what competent office just leaves a cat unattended in a way my mom could do something like that) and apparently that means it might have "parasites"- then gave us an antibiotic. They told us how to administer the antibiotic, and we asked if they'd given him some or could show us, they basically parried our soft request and insinuated we could do it ourselves. They then said it was "against their medical opinion" to take him home and made us wait to get him back for about 15 minutes with us terrified he was seizing or freaking out cold in a white medical room alone. They delivered him back- and he just looked very weak and tired- but he was breathing fine. Since I got there a little after they brought him there, I was surprised that they would suggest "putting our cat to sleep"... instead of just suggesting he get some sleep. We brought him home, gave him kitty milk, and little by little, he showed more signs of alertness. At first he was opening his eyes. Then his breathing regulated. Soon, he was sitting up when we gave him kitty milk. About four hours after we brought him home, he was able to stand on his own. Next, he was walking to his own litterbox. After a little catnap, by 8pm he's walking around, purring, and jumping up onto the couch (as well as doing a little bit of bread kneading). I would probably go with someone a little less quick to assume things are fatal immediately so you don't lose a member of your family because of their "medical opinion". Ps right now he's licking his fur grooming himself as if it was a regular weekend. This happened earlier today.

Dr. Church was really personable and great to work with when my previous dog's health was failing. I never felt that my love for my dog was being exploited for the vet's monetary gain (as I had at other practices). He was matter-of-fact and practical and didn't tug at my heart strings to try to convince me to perform expensive procedures that had a miniscule chance of improving my dog's condition. I haven't seen Dr. Church at least five years, maybe longer - not sure what happened to him. I've been taking Ellie - my rescue chihuahua - to Smithfield Road since I adopted her in 2016. On 6/21, the vet diagnosed Ellie with a wound - not externally visible, but causing her some discomfort that I noticed, and I was provided with a course of antibiotics. The twenty-something vet tech (who had already given some guff to the vet) hammered into me that I MUST complete the entire course of antibiotics. I'm 46. This is my second dog as an adult. I grew up with dogs and cats. I've had my chihuahua since 2016. This ain't my first rodeo, kid, and I didn't really appreciate the lecture. Fast forward to this morning when someone called from the office to reschedule Ellie's follow-up appointment for the FOURTH time - each time they rescheduled, there was some new reason: vet's out of the country, car accident, personal emergency. Nope. We're done here.
