I just moved to the city a few months ago, and since then, I have been on the hunt for a quality gym, preferably martial arts (I've been wanting to learn for quite some time now.) Unfortunately, this place didn't make the cut. I signed up for a Muay Thai class, and I was actually pleasantly surprised when I first saw the facility. Everything seemed new and super clean. After that first impression, my experience went completely downhill. First of all, the class instructor (Emily) could not have been more curt when I asked her to observe my hand wrapping (it was my FIRST TIME in a martial arts class...seriously?!) At first I wasn't sure if she heard me, so I asked again, and the second time she made eye contact, so I KNOW she heard me, but she simply walked away and began talking and laughing with another person (I'm assuming a regular member) in the class. I wanted to walk out. But I had changed my plans to be there, so I decided to stay. She put me on the bag for a while, rarely coming over to tell me what to do, how to improve, or ANYTHING. I felt invisible for nearly half the class. After about 40 minutes, I just left. I'm not sure if anyone saw, but from the vibe I got from the instructor, I doubted that she cared at all. The place seemed wonderful at first, and I want to go back and try a different instructor, but after that experience, I'll probably visit a few other gyms before I come back. Such a shame. read more

I've only been to one class here, so this review will be updated soon, but so far I haven't seen anything to complain about. I took the Kettlebell class with Steve and it was challenging & engaging. He was very hands on, paid particular attention to the new/newer students but walked around the whole time to give pointers to everyone. Five Points Academy, were have you been half my life? I was a competitive dragonboat athlete whom obtained a silver medal in a Club Crew World Championship in Macau (2010) but fell into a unhealthy and unfit lifestyle due to life responsibilities. I attempted to go back to the gym for many years but the regular gyms (Blink, NYSC, Crunch) were not motivating, most of the time very dirty, and had a very isolated and negative environment. However, one day Gianna (a manager of Five Points Academy) appeared and persuaded me to just check out the gym. After one class (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) I fell in love with the place. I grew up studying many martial arts but I have not received the amount of attention and critical critiques on techniques, body mechanics, and training safely. Their philosophy on training hard & smart, standing strong and respect illuminates when you first enter the gym, seeing the environment and the motivated vibes of every member. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and are very knowledgeable. Also, It is VERY CLEAN! The staff is consistently cleaning. I was getting bored of my usual day to day work out in a regular gym. I went to a friends Muay Thai competition and felt inspired to learn the art of Muay Thai. Luckily Five Points is a 5 minute walk from my work so I had to join. The past 7 months being a member here has truly changed my life. I feel healthy and strong and I'm learning such a beautiful martial art. The coaches and instructors are top notch and are attentive to your skill and development. My boys take Jinn's junior BJJ class every week. They enjoy it. Some days conditioning is hard since they are not used to doing hand-stands or perfect plank. Like most of us, they rather do the wrestling/grappling part. Every staffer is friendly and helpful. I have started taking private Muay Thai with Emily Bearden. She is super friendly, patient and helpful. My striking and kicking form is so much better when I practice on my own. Thanks. read more

So I been looking around to check out different schools I may want to train in. So today I stopped by and decided to buy some items at the counter. The clerk was very very rude. Almost as in disgust for me asking about certain things pertaining to equipment. I made the purchase and then asked for a receipt in which she gave me a angry look then I asked for a bag and she tossed it on the counter and then decided this is not the environment I need to train in if the clerk is this nasty I wonder how the rest of staff maybe...if staff feels under paid and not happy then find another job. One bad experience can turn away customers forever. read more

This place is great. All the trainers are cool and helpful. The people training are also helpful with tips and making someone new feel comftorable. Unlike my last gym, there are no "cliques". Everyone rotates to allow everyone to get a chance to work with eachother. It is well ventilated and spacey. Huge mats, upstairs and downstairs area. 2 months in and i have allready learned so much. My favorite classes to take is the Kali (knife fighting) yoga and mhuy tai. read more

As I was on my way to a different Muay Thai school to sign up, a friend texted me a link for a Gilt City coupon for a month at Five Points. I didn't think about training there because they have so many different martial arts programs, that I didn't think that any one would be on par with a school that only teaches that martial art. I took my first Muay Thai class with Giovanny, who took the time to show me the technical side of each punch, kick, elbow and knee. Other Muay Thai schools focus on working you out before teaching you how to strike. So for the first 30+ minutes of a class you are doing calisthenics and cardio instead of learning Muay Thai. Usually the instructor would then yell out a combination for the class and watch his friends spar in the ring, as you try it. And you are left to learn from YouTube. But the reason I was compelled to write this review is due to the BJJ program. I received a blue belt 5 years ago, but I was essentially done with BJJ. My Jiu Jitsu wasn't improving and the techniques I was learning in most classes weren't something that I could incorporate into my game. The instructor at 5 points Jin (RGA Black Belt) is very knowledgable in BJJ, wrestling and Judo. The techniques he teaches are high percentage moves that you can use right away. Class sizes are very small, so you'll always get a lot of instruction; sometimes the classes feel like privates. His classes helped remind me why I was drawn to Jiu Jitsu in the first place. The school also has a full gym, treadmills and fitness classes that focus on functional strength and movement. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

This is looooong overdue since I've been a member of Five Points since 2009. At Five Points, the instructors know you by name and are treated like a member of the family, not just a number. This is a stellar group of trainers and athletes who seek health, fitness, fierceness and development of the body as a whole. You will get corrections on form & technique in an motivational nature and you actually want to keep coming back. The owners are the coolest people on the planet and will answer any of your questions w/out pretense. I can't recommend Five Points Enough! read more

KIDS FIGHT CLUB? Yup! Ok, so it's not "fight club" because if it was, you know I would have just broken the first rule, but yup, this place is THE GO TO SPOT if you want your kids to learn Brazilian Jujitsu or Muay Thai Kickboxing! My 11 year old boy/girl twins have been with Jin (the best children Jujitsu instructor on the East Coast and perhaps the country) for over 6 years now and have just started practicing with Coach Emily for Muay Thai. There is NOT ENOUGH I can say about these instructors and the entire gym staff. In all my life, I've never seen instructors that are more dedicated and so in tune with their students. I humbly wish that some of the teachers in my twins elementary school would take a page from their book. They walk that fine line between pushing them to their potential but not making them go over that line and feel defeated. I don't know how they do it, but I'm honestly in awe. I look forward to years more at this facility with these instructors. read more

This is a fantastic academy, and Jin Yung, the BJJ instructor, is phenomenal. I'm from LA, which has great academies, was in NYC for a few weeks, and came here. I'm lucky to have trained in such a great place. The guys are in great shape and train hard, but they don't try to hurt each other and are really good training partners. read more

This is hands down the best gym in NYC. It is always very clean, has wonderful instructors and everyone is extremely helpful. Every instructor goes above and beyond to answer questions and help you improve whatever you are working on. The classes are versatile and cover a huge range from strength and conditioning to various martial arts. I love coming here and if you are committing to living a healthy lifestyle you will as well. Long overdue rating. I have been a practitioner of the sport for over a decade and have trained at various gym around the country and the world. I had the pleasure of training at 5 points for just under 3 years and beyond the great vibe/energy, incredibly well maintained and clean,professionally maintained gym... the one thing that stands out about 5 points above and beyond the rest... is the commitment that Steve and his team show toward the continual growth and evolution of their program. Wether its bringing it top trainers from around the world, or introducing new conditioning classes and techniques, new equipment, new formats and progressive training techniques ... 5 points never settled for mediocre. It is easy to see that all of this comes from a true passion for the sport that Steve, Simon, and their team share. I wanted to make sure that I took the time to review my stellar experience yesterday, especially after reading some of the other reviews. I took the kettlebell class with Emily and it was fantastic - everything I'd hoped it would be and I can't wait to take it again (and possibly other classes). It was a true LEARNING experience, no Lululemon bullshit here. It was a serious class where attention to form and technique was paramount. Emily really took her time helping me and I can say I learned so much in that one hour. She was inspiring and encouraging. The class was small, focused, and challenging. I'm definitely sore today. I work out quite a bit and like to challenge myself, I can confidently say it was an excellent workout as well as being a learning experience. I'm super encouraged to continue to work with and further my knowledge/use of kettlebells. I also enjoyed the vibe of the space, everyone was extremely nice and welcoming. I had come off major shoulder surgery and wanted to get back to the gym. I obviously had to be careful, and the trainers at 5 Points were patient & guided me to a full recovery. Now I go all the time. I can't recommend enough. read more

I haven't done Muay Thai since my car accident a couple of years ago so it was really intimidating to walk into a fighter gym feeling like a newbie again, but I've had an awesome time here these past few weeks! Been taking kettlebell classes and my favorite ones are definitely with Steve Milles. He's one of the best instructors I've ever had - always making sure you're in the proper form and challenging yourself - and he's also a really friendly guy. My husband and I visited Five Points while we were in NYC for the day. We took part in a jiu jitsu class led by Jin Yung, a Renzo Gracie black belt. We have been doing BJJ for almost a year now, out of two gyms in VA. Everything about Five Points was great. The facility was clean and in great shape, the front door staff was helpful and professional, other students in the class were friendly and respectful (from white belts to brown belts). Being good at BJJ does not mean one is a good teacher of BJJ. Jin is an exceptional teacher! He was encouraging, patient, and able to present things in an easy to understand manner. These are all signs of a great gym and I would sign up in an instant if we lived in NYC! read more

The partners, teachers, programming and instruction here are uniformly excellent, the atmosphere is low-key and friendly, the facilities are comfortable and cleaned all throughout the day, and there is a genuine interest across the board in clients' optimal wellness, far beyond the norm of most gyms/studios.
