I came here for a weekend Pad Work workout followed by a Bag Drills classes. It was my first time doing any martial arts whatsoever so I really didnt know what I was walking into. However, from the very start I was greeted by friendly staff and the instructors were amazing. They helped me with my form, gave me personal instruction on how to improve, and watched to make sure I was doing everything correctly. I loved the Pad Work class so much that I went a few days later once again. The workouts are tough, especially if you're not in shape and they'll have you sweating a few minutes into the class however I can't stress how worth it feels afterwards. I also really like that they allow drop-ins. Want to show up to a class later in the day? Ok! Don't want to go? No obligation to show up. I'll definitely be going again. read more

There is no gym in the world that I know of where I'd rather train year-round than Five Points Academy, and I've trained at some of the very best--on both coasts and recently in Thailand. The staff is friendly and professional. Our instructors are all outstanding. Many of them are professional fighters. Two of our Muay Thai coaches are Ajarns, and for 6 months out of the year maybe the gym employs one or more Thai champions as trainers-in-residence. The vibe here is friendly and warm mostly but businesslike. People come here to train and we don't mess around. When I started here I had to settle in and adjust and earn respect like anyone does at any gym where everyone knows everyone. Now that I've been here over a year, and fought twice, Five Points Academy has embraced me with open arms. This review is long overdue. Five Points is undoubtedly one of the best Muay Thai gyms I've experienced in the Tri-State area. Unlike many gyms where coaches are often distracted by their phones, Kru Steve and Kru Geo are actively engaged, constantly moving around to correct techniques. Whether you're hitting pads, bags, or sparring, they're there, ensuring your form is spot on. The drills and pad work they tailor for you aren't just for show; they're designed to be practical in real fights, focusing on technique rather than just cardio. When I first stepped into the gym, I was struck by how much attention the Kru's give to their students. Initially, I hesitated due to the membership cost, but the value is undeniable. Not only do you learn Muay Thai, but you also get training in judo, jiu-jitsu, and access to a full weight room. For anyone serious about self-defense or improving their fitness, it's worth every penny. Even the front desk staff are friendly and always willing to help with any questions. The atmosphere is incredibly positive; I always felt motivated there. Unfortunately, my job relocated me to Midtown, but if circumstances were different, I would still be a regular at Five Points. To anyone considering Muay Thai or fitness in general, I wholeheartedly recommend Five Points. The few months I spent there were unforgettable. Five Points Academy is located in lower Manhattan and close to several subway stops making it easy to get to - The B, D, J, 4 and 6 are a short walk away. When I went I was greeted by the very nice Nadia who was working the front desk. She was super helpful as was instructor Gianna Smith. Smith helps manage the two story gym and is very experienced. She's trained out of the very technical Sitjaopho gym in Hua Hin Thailand and has fought for the USMF (United States Muay Thai Federation) on several occasions. She picked up a gold medal in the 2017 Pan American games and has a solid amount of experience in the states and Thailand. The facility opens up with a small pro shop and then a kettlebell area. Behind it is the locker rooms which have showers!!! Downstairs is another strength and conditioning area along with several treadmills. The area has a full bag area, ring, and area for jiu jitsu. There are plenty of locker rooms to store your stuff. I was able to take a class with Steve Milles, one of the head instructors at the gym. An experienced fighter and coach he ran the class through some solid pad work. Afterwards he led a fight team training that went super smooth, no egos, and no bumps or bruises. Price wise I think it is a reasonable $250 a month with recurring billing. If you go three to four times a week the membership more than pays for itself. Good instruction. Nice clean facilities. look, I don't pay much for gym memberships and what not because city life tends to bleed to dry , so it's hard to justify paying 100 a month let alone $250 for a membership. Came here on a free trial because my friend is a long time member. HO-LY CRAP. So mistakes I made: 1)went to gym during my lunch break (different one) 2) forgot to eat anything all day 3) came here thinking I was going to just go super duper light If you're looking for a bro-y "I'm going to crack some skulls" type place--then go elsewhere. I went through the Muay Thai class but stuck around to observe the other classes. You come here to learn the arts (places like CKO would be more of a cardio banger). everyone has been very warm and welcoming. The classes look like chaos, but the instructors were very good with walking us through our beginning routines and were quick to help out with effective fixes. Also what I appreciated was the seasoned understanding of the instructors--quite honestly I was worried about this class because of my previous injuries, but off the bat he asked if I had any and when I told him about my torn hip and multiple tears on my shoulders, I had a good feeling that I was in good hands. I was told after that they have renown martial artists come on regular bases as residents to come help the more advanced people perfect their progression. When I was told there was a "little bit of everything" I kind of got turned off because I expected a cluster f, but as soon as I walked downstairs the smile I realized I had was from ear to ear. So go through the class, and as I started to get into it (realized I haven't done any type of martial arts anything in almost 20 years) I couldn't help but to really start pushing harder. Before I realized, class was over and I was a sweat drenched wobbly mess but the feeling of having that much fun and finding that much peace and catharsis--$250 a month you say? plus rental lockers and daily laundry service if you don't mind the extra fee huh?---worth every penny.. Amazing spot with amazing coaches. I've been looking for a kettlebell gym in Manhattan for a few months and finally found it. I'm a kettlebell instructor myself and have high expectations, these guys deliver. Nothing necessarily fancy or beautiful, but it provides you the tools and the coaches to get strong and stay safe (and have fun) doing so. Can't say anything about their "downstairs" area with muy thai etc but I hear great stuff. Can't wait to check it out. This is a top of the line muay thai gym which holds noticable advantages over others of its kind. To break it down I will discuss the facility, personnel and schedule. This gym features full size boxing ring, a variety of heavy bags, zebra mats and weight training areas (one for kettlebells and one with traditional equipment like dumbells and leg press machines). All areas are kept in pristine condition and very clean. The gym also features a small shop which allows any member to purchase equipment such as gloves or head gear. Also equipped with SHOWERS! (Something a lot of martial arts gym's are missing) Five points is open from the early mornings to late nights (with numerous classes throughout the day). When class is not in progress any member can come and work out on their own which is a huge plus if you have an irregular schedule. As stated above, with all its features, anyone can easily come in on their own and get a good workout in. Laslty the one thing that puts everything together is the personnel. Everyone that works here or is a member is very friendly and makes newcomers feel welcomed. Additionally the muay thai coaches (I only took muay thai) are some of the best. They break down techique in such a way that anyone will be able to pick it up with pratice. Needless to say the muay thai classes are a great workout as well. Hand in hand the gym's members are also very helpful, especially the ones who have trained in muay thai for many years. I've received numerous tips and advice from a fellow member to correct my form. It's crazy to think that I have passed by this place thousands of times without ever knowing this place even existed! So, thank you, Google Maps, for making my life a little easier--sometimes. I did a day trial pass and took the Kettlebell Training class with Bill at a time when my squat and deadlift forms weren't as great. Kettlebell workouts are a different kind of beast in their own right. I have to say that the gym and the class itself was an interesting experience--the gym seems to have been there for quite a while and has that old-school boxing gym feel to it. Sneakers were not needed for the class, as it took place on the floor mat. It was an open-level class, but it seemed like most of the attendees were regulars and knew each other and the class leaned more towards an intermediate-advanced level. Having never really been taught how to swing a kettlebell properly, I pretty much went into the class wanting to learn proper form and went with the flow. Bill took notice and spent a great deal trying to show/teach me how to swing, but it was just overall hard for me to learn to adjust my body this certain way. While he was extremely patient and didn't give up trying to teach me proper form, I felt like the attention drifted away from the class and I sensed some (silent) frustration from some members of the class who probably felt like too much time was being spent on showing me how to perfect the movement and I felt bad about this seemingly turning into a one-on-one personal training session. The facilities are pretty nice, especially if you're not looking for anything fancy--there's a ring and gym equipment and machines--although limited--are there but either way too close to each other, or in some cases, on top of each other. Other than the Y, I don't really know of any other gyms with classes in the Chinatown area, but this is a good option if you're looking for a gym with boxing and classes. read more

I started training with Steve in 2012, and 6 years later I was hoping to bring a Five Points Academy flag to the top of the world, Mount Everest. When I first came to Steve, I was an office worker mostly but also an infrequent recreational climber with aspirations of climbing more challenging mountains. A special operations friend of mine who was getting his doctorate in sports physical therapy recommended only one trainer: Steve Milles. I had barely lifted before and had never trained with kettlebells. I appreciate that Steve is adamant about perfect form. I have never been injured or sidelined by pain at any point in the 6 years we've worked together. Instead, Steve has been a crucial part of my training for many of my mountaineering expeditions - in fact, on May 16, 2018, I became the 68th American woman to summit Mount Everest and survive. I joined Five Points this winter after moving just a few blocks away, and it's been a great decision. I trained at two other Muay Thai/fighting gyms several years back, and there are a bunch of reasons why Five Points really stands apart from those gyms (which were top-notch as well): 1. Muay Thai Class structure: the emphasis at Five Points is on technical rounds: you're going split the majority of the class with a partner wearing Thai pads and a belly pad. This allows you to work on a variety of strikes, techniques, and combos rather than just repeating certain combos like classes at other gyms. This structure is much more realistic if you're planning to jump in a ring or have to defend yourself, and gives you an opportunity to concentrate on specific moves if you need to work on something. Also, after a few years without doing any training, desk jobs for six years, and a naturally inflexible body, my Muay Thai kicks absolutely sucked (seriously, watch out for your groin), but they're getting better every day thanks to the top-flight instructors and classmates here. :) 2. Fitness classes/equipment: none of the other fighting gyms come anywhere close to Five Points in terms of the amount of fitness equipment and classes available. Kettlebells, sandbags, TRX, HIIT, barbell, and yoga classes are all top-notch and included even in the most basic membership offered. Also, the free weights area has everything needed for a complete workout, and I love being able to use that area whenever I please if I'm not up for taking a class. 3. Locker rooms with showers and towels: Good luck finding that elsewhere. ;) 4. Staff and instructors: most real gyms of this sort have a solid staff, and you'll certainly find a group of committed, non-judgmental, and affable folks at Five Points. They always push you to improve. Steve and his crew are also always making improvements to the gym (which looks great after the latest ring move and the colorful logos added to the top floor-- someone's gotta upload photos of both). 5. Belts, on belts, on belts: The ultimate indicator of a gym's quality. The fight team here is super inspiring and incredibly helpful. 6. BJJ. Judo, Kali classes: I haven't taken any of these (still concentrating on improving those kicks!) but everyone here who's takes these classes raves about them. 7. Atmosphere: If you haven't been able to tell by now, this place is very inviting and a great gym whether you're perfecting your training or trying something for the first time. There's a good mix of male and female trainers/instructors and gym-goers. It's not a place where people try to intimidate others, and you're not going to see some dumbo wearing an Affliction shirt, chugging Muscle Milk and a gallon of water while snickering at your squats, bro. If you want to work out or train as part of a community, the opportunity is there for you, but it's just as easy to show up, workout, and go home if that's more your style. 8. I was looking for a place to pop into and exit quickly without talking to anyone. I attempted to do that for about 2 months ...but found it impossible. Everyone at Five Points, staff and member alike, are outstanding individuals ...this made it impossible for me to evade them. A few years later I find myself still part of this great community. I have gotten stronger and I can probably kick butt (I haven't tried) and dead-lift you. What is good at Five Points: All the classes, I have not taken a bad class. I've been going to five points for almost a year. There isn't a single thing about these guys which is anything less than exceptional. The other students are amazing. Even though it has some of the most serious, badass fighters (many pros) and former world champs, there isn't a single shred of ego here. Everyone takes their time to make new students feel welcome and invest their time to help build them up. I had pro fighters who were prepping for upcoming fights climb out of the ring because they wanted to take a few minutes out to show me how to throw my knees better. In terms of the Muay Thai classes, this is a very, very different experience than a CKO or ilovekickboxing.com gym. The primary focus here isn't whether you get a cardio workout, but to train fighters. But, ironically (or not) that means you will get a much, much, much better workout than the gyms that only care about cardio. The jiu jitsu is also amazing. The instruction, while being very technical is also very practical and there is a real emphasis on live training. The other students will go out of their way to help you learn the technique and aren't just going to bend you up for the sake of "winning" against someone who just got there. Also, the kali classes are super fun. Finally, the instructors are absolutely fantastic. Their knowledge, dedication and coaching ability is just completely off the charts. Good facility, towels, shower, good selection of different classes. Unfortunately that's all advantages of this place for me. 1. Should cancel the policy of buying club's t-shirt and shorts. Paying 250$ per month + gear, I think i does not matter what brand of t-shirt you wear. 2. When the guy without any experience comes to take class and he is told to punch bag. Seriously? You want him to injure himself, punching without proper technique? Instructor has to show not only drill but look after each learner and correct him. People in class want to learn, not only punch pads, thats what they pay for. Thats about muay thai class. Maybe I was coming at wrong time , to the wrong class. Been a member since 2010. I really love this place. It's important to have a few "places" in the city where you can go and feel welcome and this is one, not just to me, but to most members. From a fitness standpoint, the sky is the limit. You can literally do something different every day, from a fitness class like kettlebells or TRX to martial arts classes with world-class trainers including Muay Thai, Judo, BJJ, and Kali. Or if you just want to wing it, you can do your own thing on the free weights, machines, mats, bags, or cardio machines. Everything is well-maintained and there's ALWAYS someone around to give you pointers or a spot. If you want to ramp it up, the trainers are there for you but not at all pushy. Great people, great vibe, great facilities. Sure there are bigger gyms with dozens of treadmills and even lap pools, but those are lame because you feel like a nameless, faceless, drone - the treadmills reminding you of the daily treadmill of your life in this unforgiving city. In this gym, you will be known if you wish to be known. You'll have help if you wish to have help. You'll feel like part of a team. And THAT my friends, is something you can't buy at the big brand name joints peppered around town like so much pepper. read more

I have by no means ever considered myself to be an athlete, but at the age of 39 I woke up and said I need to do something with my life and health. So, I have been doing CrossFit for the last 3 years, but I wanted to try something new. I currently have friends who were doing Muay Thai at this facility, and they had invited me a multitude of times, but I didn't think it was for me. Finally, on August 6th, I said what is there to lose and went to try out a class. And guess what? I really fell in love with it. I am no means anywhere good at it, but what I love about this facility are the people. The people are so welcoming, and you feel so comfortable starting on your initial visit. Coach Gio is truly amazing at what he does that he makes you want to come back for more. I have encountered so many terrible coaches, that you start weeding out the good from the bad. You can truly tell that he has a passion for what he does, and it shows in the way he runs his class and how he teaches the students. He is constantly watching and correcting, and you don't feel like you are just a body in a room. Also, being able to learn from a pro fighter is a plus! Just take the plunge and try one class with this Coach...you won't look back I promise you! The facility itself if very clean and very spacious. From what I have seen from my last three visits was that there is a kettlebell section, weight lifting area, treadmills, Jujitsu area and of course, a Muay Thai area. Every time I have been there, the gym has been full, but not over crowded and spacious. I have only been to three 5:45pm Muay Thai classes with Coach Gio, but it would be fun to try out the other classes there as well. I really loved it so much, that I have been there every week since my initial visit. I live upstate, so it's hard for me to commit more days a week, on top of being part of a box already, but I look forward to every Tuesday now, to learn more, to become stronger, and to be better than yesterday. No need to feel self conscious here. Remember, in any sport, it's always YOU against YOU. Never compare yourself to someone else. As long as you feel improvement within yourself, you have succeeded. Most welcoming place I've ever been from staff to members. Respect trickles down from the top. White belts are treated the same as black belts. There are always watchful eyes correcting and supporting you from coaches. Sensei Kevin is one of the best humans I've met in a long time, great person, great Judo coach. Safety and technique first. Five points as a whole cares about you as a person and wants to help you achieve your goals however big or small they are. Recommend giving it a try. I was tired of just lifting weights and wanted to do something different. I came to Five Points Academy based on the recommendations of some of my friends. I'm staying here because of the instructors and the people who train here. The instructors take the time to make sure you understand what your doing which is a plus for a noob like me. All my training partners have been pretty helpful when it comes to pointing out what I need to fix. The staff here are pretty helpful and they usually greet me by my name. It isn't required but it is a nice touch. They offer a bunch of other classes besides muay thai which you can see on their website and they do have an area for you to lift weights if you want to do that as well. If you are someone who is completely new to muay thai, I would recommend you come here to check it out. read more

I love this place so much. I started going to Five Points in August 2013 and although I'd been training at martial arts gyms around the city for awhile, it can be intimidating to join a new place, especially if you're out of practice (like I was) or new. Not only did I feel welcome from day one, but they whipped me into shape FAST. All the coaches know their sh*t! The classes are fun, you get a lot of personal attention and it's always an awesome workout. The other students are always very friendly and the more advance ones are always patient and willing to help as well. I'm not trying to be a serious fighter, but their fight team is pretty badass too. I just recently rejoined after being away from NYC for awhile and their new space is awesome, and so clean! Best gym i've ever been to. Joined for the kettlebell classes and ended up training in Muay Thai for a few years. Currently I'm mainly lifting there but as soon as my nagging leg injury heals I'll dive back into Muay Thai. Gym offers Muay Thai, BJJ, Kali, Kettlebell classes, TRX, HIIT training, yoga and classes that incorporate a combo of strength training activities. All the trainers are awesome and Coach Emily has an adorable mini-pitbull named Sunny that is always there to make you smile. Best part of the gym is the people. Everyone - from the trainers to the members - will make you feel welcome. This is the first gym I ever joined where I ended up with drinking buddies (which of course brings me back to the gym, but that's OK). Give a shot. I found myself in New York for an internship for one month. Having trained muay thai in Australia I was looking for a facility to keep up my training while abroad. It was with great fortune I found myself at five points. The facilities are fantastic. Featuring strength training equipment such as trx bands, squat racks, and ample amounts of kettlebells. It also features an area for bjj, a full ring and two areas with bags for extra conditioning. They feature multiple classes in many arts so you can feel free to choose whichever one captures your interest. I cannot speak for the others but the muay thai classes were amazing. They cater to all levels of experience with detailed instruction and have a great focus on the technical aspects of the art. The instructors are amazing and extremely personable and I took away so much from my month training here. If I ever find my way back to New York, you better believe this will be my go to spot. I would love to give this place five stars, but 3 because my ribs are in so much pain as I type this. It's bound to happen my training partner put his knee into my rib and rolled me over his head. It's been five days and it's impossible for me to hold a plank push up, coughing hurts, picking up 10lbs. makes my eyes water, and I take it this is normal for this kind of training and part of becoming stronger. I would love to come back, a professional told me it's going to be 6-8 weeks to heal the ribs. But feel awkward about paying to be beaten up while learning. Ugh. Update: my rib injury is finally gone after several months. I want to give this place another try so I took a judo class with Kevin. He gave good instructions to me and made me feel safe when I started to drill the footwork and gripping. I realized he was the owner! I suggest to take a class by the owner of any fitness business to really judge the school. read more

Amazing gym! Great facilities, great instructors, great owners. I train in SF and was visiting for my sister's wedding and everyone was super welcoming! The All-Levels Muay Thai classes were great. For the pad classes: Shadow boxing, followed by pad drills, and conditioning. For the bag classes: Shadow boxing, bag drills (elbows, punches, knees, push kicks, roundhouse) Love the structure of the classes and how clean the facilities are. This is a very female friendly gym. There's a big locker room for the ladies too! Highly recommend for Muay Thai! read more

***EDIT as of 8/24/2017*** After over a year and a half here, I can say without reservation that I made the right choice. Although I have had to scale back my activity due to foot and knee injuries (having nothing to do with training), everything I said before remains as true as ever. I have shifted my focus to Pekiti Tirsia Kali, so my update will be mostly focused on that. The instructors have been understanding of my limitations due to injury, while encouraging and helping me to move past them. Simon Burgess is an excellent instructor, and has even gone out of his way to work with me on ways to train and improve my skills while rehabilitating my injuries. There are also several other well qualified male and female instructors & senior students, who all have their own teaching style and preferences/areas of expertise. This helps with both achieving a deeper understanding of aspects of Kali, and finding your own strengths. The students also work together and help each other progress, and are a great group of men and women to train with. I have taken three different classes so far, seven sessions with five different instructors. Classes with any one of them, in any one of the classes I've taken (Muay Thai, Kettlebell and Pekiti Tirsia Kali) would be worth joining for. Having access to many excellent instructors who are both highly skilled in their respective arts, and able to share that knowledge with novices and experienced students alike make it an excellent training environment, whether you are a new student, a returning one, or an experienced one. Additionally, the other students have consistently been friendly and helpful. The training space itself is well laid out, with several separate areas to accommodate the variety of classes that are offered. Five Points is a great gym to learn proper techniques and get your butt kicked, be it in muay thai or kettlebells. I first tried a couple of muay thai classes and got hooked. But what really got me convinced was how tidy and organized the gym was and how respectful the members were to each other; this is rare in any gym! I've tried muay thai, kettlebell, primal barbell, and TRX classes. Despite being a division 1 athlete until I turned 30, I can honestly say I still learned something in every class with a variety of great instructors. read more

Muay Thai has been Five Points main staple along with Kali and strength and conditioning classes. But Five Points also provides a strong grappling program with Workshop's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program and a sound Judo program who's one of Five Points coaches brings an Eastern European "jacket-wrestling" style. If you have the time and commitment to train Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Judo, you get a feel for an interesting mix martial arts experience without the pomp of "I-train-UFC" mentality. read more

I do a lot of strength training classes so I thought it would be good to take a conditioning class here. My friend decided to join me (she hardly works out.) My first observation was that I didn't like that there wasn't any music to accompany the workout. Second, there was no stretching or proper warming up other then jumping rope. My friend pulled her quad muscle early on in the class and had to stop. Later I pulled a muscle in my back and wasn't able to walk or sit properly the following day. Having us stretch properly plus jump rope would've improved the class immensely. read more

I have been coming to five points for over two years and I love it! I take Kettlebell and strength training classes. The instructors are all amazing, and give great instruction to make sure you have proper form. I have tried some other kettlebell classes that make me cringe after being a Five Points member. This an unpretentious place, and the staff knows all their members by name. Also Brandice at the front desk is just the best. I would recommend Five Points to anyone. read more

A couple of points - I was first introduced to Five Points out of the SEA of gyms and studios in NYC by my boyfriend. He has been a member for 6-7 years now even before they moved to their current location. I was on ClassPass trying multiple gyms at the time, and decided to give Five Points a go. I have no prior Muay Thai/martial arts experience, but with (relatively) healthy lifestyle and fitness. My first Muay Thai class was with Emily and a visiting Thai master and they gave me a lot of attention to make sure I got my basics right. The hour flew by without me feeling like I could never do it again. I cancelled ClassPass and joined Five Points; and Steve was great. He was very welcoming and so were his trainers/masters, front desk, even the cleaners. The price is a little steep, but come on, it's NYC and all you have to do is go all out & attend as many classes as you'd like, as many times as you want. They (masters & senior students) are very patient with teaching newbies like me and it takes the anxiety out of slowing everybody down. Five Points Academy, were have you been half my life? I was a competitive dragonboat athlete whom obtained a silver medal in a Club Crew World Championship in Macau (2010) but fell into a unhealthy and unfit lifestyle due to life responsibilities. I attempted to go back to the gym for many years but the regular gyms (Blink, NYSC, Crunch) were not motivating, most of the time very dirty, and had a very isolated and negative environment. However, one day Gianna (a manager of Five Points Academy) appeared and persuaded me to just check out the gym. After one class (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) I fell in love with the place. I grew up studying many martial arts but I have not received the amount of attention and critical critiques on techniques, body mechanics, and training safely. Their philosophy on training hard & smart, standing strong and respect illuminates when you first enter the gym, seeing the environment and the motivated vibes of every member. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and are very knowledgeable. Also, It is VERY CLEAN! The staff is consistently cleaning.
