As a convenience store goes....it looks like there is a lot to choose from. But that is not entirely the truth. Booze-wise, JRs and Liquor World are also very close with a better selection. As for drinks and snacks....things often feel grimy or dusty when I pick them up (and therefore pass them over). I can reliably get bags of ice here for whatever reason. Employees and their attitude are exactly as you would expect from a spot like this. Caps suffers greatly from loitering folks and kids, some of whom also approach and verbally accost customers. It also suffers from questionable and vaguely-uncomfortable feeling neighboring attached businesses (?). Not to mention a drive-by shooting resulting in a death a year or so back. This place is convenient to me and it would talk a lot to make me forego that ease of location. Still...it could be less skeevy.

The staff inside are real welcoming and they have a good selection of beer to buy if would like a night cap. When it boils down to it, the cheap gas won me over. Well, I then realized that my phone was dead and I had no way to contact Enterprise, a tow truck, the family, anyone. Went into the Better Way store with the hopes of purchasing a charging cord. Instead, one of the clerks did allow me to use a charging cord, much appreciated. Unfortunately, after returning the cord, the phone went dead again, mid-call with roadside assist. Returned to the store, would happily purchase a cord, but didn't see any, otherwise, the issue would have been resolved. Instead, I mentioned my dilemma, the fact that I was stranded, no contact, nothing nearby as far as I could see. Now, if it were myself and someone was stranded, vehicle right outside with a flat, this would have been a no-brainer, but maybe that's just me. Without hesitation, I would have offered to use the store phone, my personal phone, offered to call someone, something, anything. Honestly, I just assumed that would be the response, the decent thing to do, without question, and not really that hard. Instead, and I paraphrase, what I got was basically "you're out of luck". This is not really a crime-ridden area, laid back Midwest, and I'm about as clean cut as they come, 60 year old physician. Again, maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't have to think about this one for two seconds, it's just the decent thing to do, at least where I came from. When I did inquire about using a store phone or an employee phone, I was met with a litany of profanity, the epitome of disrespect, and among the trashiest displays I have ever seen. I couldn't count the "MFers" and "I already helped you" and various profanities, all at the top of her voice, all continuous, until I had fully exited the store. Absolutely no excuse for ever, ever treating someone that way. Bad enough you can't even provide the most basic of assistance to a stranded motorist, but to compound things by calling someone every name in the book, all for asking if they could use a store phone, is unimaginable. In all years of adulthood and practice, I have never seen such a profane and disrespectful display. No business whatsoever working with the public. If that were any of my staff at all, I would personally terminate them on the spot for speaking with someone that way. After that display, I fully understand her reluctance to help in the first place and dismissal with an "I already helped", pretty much consistent with what I heard coming out of her mouth during the profane rant. Seems like that's just the person that she is. Sorry if this is so long, but I am simply shocked at this display, just over-the-top ridiculous. Absolute trash behavior. Me? Like I said, I would have offered to help if the shoes were switched, but even if not, I can't see myself ever acting the way this lady acted.

I was concerned the ads might be a bit and switch, but there was plenty of product available. I snared quite a few bargains. And I grilled one of the porterhouse steaks tonight and the quality of the beef was excellent. As for the rest of the store, inventory is limited. Some empty shelves, limited selection, and most items are roughly 50¢ to 1$ more than a chain store. The locals have to pay for the convenience. I found it frustrating that many items weren't clearly priced. Particularly in produce. Also, OTG has its own off street parking lot for convenience. Is this an every day shopper? No. But sale prices provide a great reason to shop.

You know that scene from The Simpsons where Grandpa Simpson walks into a brothel, sees his grandson Bart, turns around and walks back out of the door? I kind of wanted to do one of those numbers upon entering Olde Towne Grocery. But I persisted, because I do love checking out local grocery stores when I'm visiting a new area. This one looked like it could have been so much better, but instead it was sad. Empty grocery shelves just give off a depressing feeling, you know? That said, the items that were on the shelves were arranged neatly, so there's that. There was very little produce, and what was there was just the hardy stuff that lasts a long time, like potatoes and onions. The meat counter did not look like it was in commission anymore. I guess a sparse grocery store in a neighborhood is better than no grocery store, right?

I asked a store attendant for assistance who said everything is in aisle 7, to which I stated not so, not the item I am looking for. His reply was, well we can't carry everything. So I am relegated to having to purchase something different and far more expensive than what I was in need of. (negative = attendant attitude and negative to Kroger for lack of a commonly stocked item in every grocery store around the country!) #2 - check out and bagger...what the heck! Are these people not trained on the proper bagging procedures? My container of loose fruit and cake were upside down in the bag. Chips crushed inside bag with two heavy items. No greetings, no thank you's. Not what I have been experiencing in other stores elsewhere. Are Kroger employees so unhappy with their jobs that they take it out on the customers?
