I was pleased to see that Cash Saver had opened until I found out that I would have to do math while shopping. I don't mean that I would have to keep a running total (rounded up for good measure) in my head in order to stay within the budget but that I would have to remember to add ten percent to all of the marked prices. That's the schtick here. By presenting you with the "cost" price and boasting that they "add 10% at checkout", they give the impression that they are barely eking out a profit and that you are saving a bundle. It's a great tactic. Everyone wants to save a few dollars these days. But, really, the prices here are no better than anywhere else and the selection is fairly limited (almost no organic stock) and I am pretty sure that I don't have to do any extra math while trying to avoid a shopping cart collision over at Jay-C. Cash Saver is fine for running in to grab a few things that I might need right away but I still need to make a longer journey to do the serious shopping.

After a recent Creative Mornings downtown, I decided to run to Aldi across the bridge. I'd been here over before and recalled that it was large, clean, and fairly well organized (which isn't always the case). I popped over the 2nd St bridge & was there in a flash. Aldi has a ton of organic, whole foods for folks like me who are trying to live a healthier, plant- based life. Almost everything is their brand, like Trader Joe's. They have a commitment to providing loads of non-GMO and organic options. Did I mention I also love their weekly specials? They often have housewares at an amazing price. In the past month, I've snagged a small mandolin cutter, a silicone bento box, a refrigerator organizer .... If you like a deal and are watching you health, check this Aldi out! I may start a pilgrimage to southern Indiana for my Aldi fix as this store and the one in New Albany are some of the best around Louisville.

I decided to get three plates and mix up the entrees and sides so the folks at home would have a choice. Main dishes I chose were meatloaf and fried chicken and among the sides were mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, green beans and Brussels sprouts. You also get a choice of bread, roll or cornbread. I didn't try the chicken but I've had chicken from this location many times and it's always good. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the meatloaf was. I'm usually always disappointed when I order meatloaf out but that was not the case. It was not at all dry, it was very flavorful and a bit on the sweet side which I didn't mind. Portions were very generous. The Mac and cheese was really good and I liked the Brussels sprouts as well. My family members said everything was good. I also got a pound of strawberry cobbler and it was delicious. The food was hot and fresh and packaged for easy transport. Service was friendly and reasonably fast considering it was right at lunchtime. A note about that: if you're planning to go on your lunch break, it might be worth it to call ahead and order it so it will be ready when you get there. It takes time for each customer to order all of their separate items and for the clerk to plate up the food, wrap and label it. If you get a few people in line it can take awhile. Plate lunches are about $10 each.

Deli smoked sausage sandwich? $2. Country fried steak sandwich? $3. Biscuits 69 cents. Hot wings, beans, chili, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, cornbread. Want a can of beer with your lunch? That's $1. Webb's is also reasonably stocked with decent produce, which is great since there is no supermarket in Phoenix Hill. So if you want to pick up a couple of tomatoes or onions or bell peppers, you generally can count on getting them here. Webb's received a federal grant to provide equipment and support to carrying healthy items as part of the city's "Healthy in a Hurry" program, and this is the result. (The last time I looked in the produce section, they did have a bunch of girl scout cookies stuffed in there as well, but hey, you need to wash down that lettuce with something, no?)

Parking can also be a beast so it is best to find a spot in the adjacent strip mall near the UPS store. It is so worth it though.

There are 4 Paul's Markets in Louisville, and I am fortunate to live very close to the Middletown location, which opened in 1996. Every summer the outdoor area is chock full of beautiful flowering plants, both annual and perennial varieties. The plants today were lush, healthy, and absolutely stunning. They were priced in line with the local nursery that we most frequent, which is a bit higher than the big box stores. However, as with most things, you get what you pay for. The grocery has a wonderful deli that includes a hot bar and a wide variety of prepared sandwiches, pastas dishes, salads, and deserts. The salad selection was extensive. I opted for a cobb salad that included chicken, bacon, egg, tomatoes, lettuce, blue cheese crumbles and dressing! It was a steal for only $6.99 and absolutely delicious. I chose the honey mustard dressing and it was a chef's kiss! Throughout the grocery area one will find a lot of specialty items such as several types of gluten-free breads, seasonal fruits, regional candies, and much, much more. Paul's is a great place to grab a lunch that is far healthier than the plethora of fast-food options for just a couple more dollars!
