But as usual, what lies beneath is what fascinates as the narrow alleyways between the leaning warehouses houses interesting shops, art galleries, and museums. Apparently it's been rebuilt several times over the centuries due to fires and such, so it's like an HGTV program on a constant loop. I also noticed otherwise normal housewives turn into cheek-sucking fashion models posing against the aged planks for their Instagram moments. No good photos really inside the train. When you get to the top, thats the view you want. There are a lot of seating or possible seating areas around the place. In the summer, I can see it has a chilling spot. During the winter, staying up there with high winds and low temperatures felt like icicles to the face. I only stayed up there for probably 10 minutes. Then I went back down. There is a cafe at the top and a nice restaurant as well. You can order the tickets to stop at the midpoint and you can hike up. That looks much more doable than hiking from the bottom up. It has a lot of twist and turns.

The original church was located elsewhere and built about 1200, it was moved in 1883 and suffered a fire in 1992, thus what you see in newly reconstructed in the same form as the original. Check out the small door to the left of the alter where persons with leprosy could receive blessings. Also the dragon carvings are meant to ward off evil spirits.

It is a little bit of a hassle to get to if you don't have a car and are staying in Bergen, but there is an express bus or you can take the light rail closeby and walk to the entrance. We took the light rail there and express bus back (bus was definitely more efficient and door to door from central Bergen). There is some food at the top, but not a big restaurant. All and all if you like mountain views and/or hiking, this is worth a trip. We saw many take the gondola up one-way and then hike down.

There's several ways you can hike to the top, but my favorite and the most famous way are the 800+ steps. There's even a race every Fall to see who can run them up the fastest. Fires angels and…read moreexplosions Nykirken is a cool old church that was originally built in 1621 on a plot of land that had a building on it from at least the 1300s and probably longer. The first church only last two years before it burned down but was quickly rebuilt. However the church seemed to particularly susceptible to fire and subsequently burned down in 1670, 1758 and 1800. It was always rebuilt and seemed to be fine until 1944 when the church as well as most of the city of Bergen was destroyed when a German ship exploded nearby. The structure was rebuilt and seems to be doing just fine at the present although who knows what the future holds. The church is lovely inside with a huge organ and beautiful windows as well as a cool lugubriousity curiously juxtaposed with a cheery and bright décor. There is a really bizarre but cool angel that comes up and down from the ceiling and all kinds of wonderful stuff to look at. A special sort of church that has a fascinating history of perseverance and dedication. Hopefully this present incarnation of the building will be able to last the decades without any future catastrophes.
