The original church was located elsewhere and built about 1200, it was moved in 1883 and suffered a fire in 1992, thus what you see in newly reconstructed in the same form as the original. Check out the small door to the left of the alter where persons with leprosy could receive blessings. Also the dragon carvings are meant to ward off evil spirits.

It's worth it if you plan to visit more than a couple museums and other like attractions while in Bergen. We visited nearly ten in one day and plan to keep going tomorrow. Using the hop on hop off bus makes it easy to get around in addition to walking this beautiful city. One observation as we have been traveling across Norway and visiting many museums is it is hard to read many of the plaques, not due to language barrier - because most have English translations - but the lack of light. Part of this is due to my aging eyes but truly there just isn't enough attention given to illuminating signage. You can make it work with your phone light or just looking harder but it's hard to focus. Minor pet peeve for an otherwise great experience. The tower in particular has seven levels starting with a dungeon which you really get a feel for what it would have been like as a prisoner - just from standing in near darkness beneath the tower for a few minutes. Some prisoners were kept there for over a year. Amazing. Great experience and wonderful history. Worth it!

Bryggen has been damaged by many fires and has been rebuilt after each, closely following the previous property structure and plan as well as building techniques. The ground level of must are now gift & souvenir shops along with Starbucks & restaurants catering to tourists. There are many alleyways with club's & restaurants hidden in the back.

I also noticed otherwise normal housewives turn into cheek-sucking fashion models posing against the aged planks for their Instagram moments.
