So you might stumble across info for the best times to secure a walk-up reservation and they'll tell you to arrive at least by 10:30am Thursday through Saturday as Mawn opens at 11am. But let me tell you how I pulled up in front of Mawn at 10:40am on a Thursday and there was already a line of about 15 people!! Mind you, these people have PEOPLEZ as quite a few were holding spots in line for others in their party who could now casually stroll up to the line since their spot was secured by their people. I'm telling you have a game plan! If I knew then what I know now I probably would have got there at least by 9:30, seriously. My party got waitlisted as soon as we were just one person away from entering the restaurant and we had to wait for another 40 minutes. Fortunately it was a nice day so we just walked around the neighborhood and came back and got in. It's a small quaint place that only seats about 28 people. You'll feel like your visiting your favorite relatives home. You'll glance around at the other guest and feel like WOW i'm one of the few who finally made it into one of the most coveted highly acclaimed restaurants in Philly! Now let me see if it lives up to the hype! haha! I started out with the pear melon salad. It was light and refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed the citrus notes and the pear slices. I would have never thought to add the pear but that really complimented the salad well. I was told that a MUST try is the head on soft shell shrimp. At first I wasn't thrilled about the thought of eating the head but said what the heck, lets go for the full experience! If you love softshell crabs you'll love this! There was nothing off putting about it. It simply taste like delicious premium shrimp in a fish caramel sauce with a hint of thai basil and chili. It was wonderful. I could have gone for a second round but I wanted to try other items. I enjoyed the seafood fried rice..this is similar to the crab fried rice but included uni roe and caviar with saracha on the side so you can regulate your heat level. I'll say this, while I enjoyed the seafood fried rice and the bonus elements of it, I was not a fan of the texture of the rice itself. Perhaps it's just my preference. The rice was light, fluffy and slightly sticky in texture whereas I prefer more of a thai fried rice which is dry, slightly firm and non-clumpy texture. But that's not taking any cool points away from Mawn. It's just my preference that i'm mentioning in case anyone else goes in expecting a different texture. I love the team service aspect at Mawn. Our waiter emphasized that we're not bugging anybody if we need anything we can stop any staff person walking by. I love that. Beef Noodle soup is delicous here. So is the yellow curry noodle soup. The fish is really good here too. I didn't realize I could have requested for it to be deboned (probably because I was talking to much lol) But my waiter was kind enough to come over and help me debone it when they saw I was struggling lol This was the first time I ever had a green thai tea! It was really a treat. Not overly sweet. Nothing but pure deliciousness here! And a super helpful warm friendly staff.

I love a good BYO, so I can splurge a bit more on the food and not worry about the cost of alcohol. For a party of three, we order 5 appetizers and shared the all star fried rice, which was a perfect amount of food. We got the beef skewers, which were definitely a favorite - the meat absolutely melts in your mouth! The papaya salad paired well with this, as it was tangy and refreshing, especially on such a hot day. The scallop crudo was a special for the night, but I think they should add this to their permanent menu because it was definitely a standout! The all star fried rice at $54 was also well worth it. I am often disappointed by dishes like these due to the lack of "stuff", but there was crab throughout and a generous portion of roe. I was a little disappointed however that there were only 2 scallops at that price. Overall, each dish had impeccable flavor, great presentation, and a good amount of seafood for the price.

Things will definitely get a lot busier as the season goes on. Frankly you can't really go wrong with anything here, so I just wanted to leave some best practices as someone who's iterated a few times here: - If getting skewered meat/papaya salad, just get it at whichever booth has the shortest line with what you want (and if you don't want anything in particular, just hop in the shortest line). There might be a slight difference between stands, but since it's so common, you can't really go wrong with anyone who sells. - Stir Fry Noodle Lady! Grab the chive cakes on the side too. - Skip the sugar cane and go for the simpler drinks on the menu. Passionfruit, lime honey, and things like that will be much more refreshing. - Bring a picnic blanket, as there's plenty of space to gather and eat adjacent to the booths, and you'll avoid eating on your feet all the time. Make sure to bring cash! Venmo/card is beginning to be accepted but may have a surcharge.

Delicious papaya salads, skewered grilled meats, fruits, panda waffles, soups... its impossible to choose just one thing. I also recommend going early when they first open. It gets hot, and it gets crowded! But make sure you put this on your to-try list !

Servers were hustling, but were on hand for questions or requests for more water. With six diners, we were able to try a number of the dishes, and all were tasty! Appetizers: - Sticky Tamarind Wings (fried and tossed in a sweet and tangy sauce along with chili, lemongrass, and kaffir leaves)--delicious and sticky! - Crispy Pork Spring Rolls (silver noodles, cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, served with house sauce)--great sauce; - Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (stuffed with onions, carrots, and leaks, served with garlic soy sauce); and - Angel Shrimp (wrapped in wonton skin and deep-fried, served with sweet chili sauce). Mains: - King Soup (red curry broth served over vermicelli noodles with shredded cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, mint, cilantro, and scallions with tofu)--requested at a spice level 3, this was a rich, filling soup thanks to a generous hand with the tofu; - Deep-fried Whole Pompano Fish with Ginger Sauce (sautéed with garlic, ginger, chili peppers, carrots, and onions) served with jasmine rice)--diner ordered a Triple Flavored Sauce (sweet tangy, spicy sauce, served with steamed vegetables) at a spice level 5, but though spicy, it wasn't overwhelmingly so; - Homemade Lao Sausages (stuffed with chopped pork, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, served with steamed vegetables, roasted chili garlic paste with stick rice)--consensus was these were some great sausages; - Casserole (napa cabbage, clear noodles, basil, chili, in a red curry base)--ordered by two diners, both with fish; - Laab Salad (marinated with roasted rice powder, herbs, lime juice, with spring mix, and served with sticky rice). I also appreciated that the restaurant was well lit enough so that I could read the menu without issue. Our waitress was really nice and answered our questions about Laotian food. The pork spring rolls were super crispy and tasted especially good with the sweet dipping sauce. The Aw Lao was very dill-heavy (I learned that dill is often used in Laotian cuisine) but the flavors of the soup worked well together, and the sticky rice texture was great. I got the king's soup, and the portion size was big enough for leftovers. I wish the broth had been a bit saltier, but otherwise it was good!

I haven't had the chance to go in person until just recently. I'm so happy I did. Vegetable spring rolls: Comes with two, if you order takeout, they are whole. If you dine in, they are cut into four. Comes with a little sauce that's very good. No mushrooms in the spring rolls which I prefer. Very crispy. I am a big spring roll person and order them everywhere and I am confident these are the best. I used to order two orders and just have those as my dinner. Panang Curry: I don't eat meat so I just got veggies in it. Perfect spice level, good amount of veggies. I loved it. Instead of getting the side of rice that it comes with I swapped the rice for the side of steamed noodles which was great. Loved the pineapple. Peanut Sauce: Sweet, would be very good at a higher spice level. Great amount of veggies and fun little peanut toppings as garnish. Lovely Duck Creamy Special: my dad ordered this, he loved it. Even mentioned that it's a shame he got that the first time because now he won't want to try anything else knowing how good that is. I tried the sauce, I think it's a red curry sauce, it's very good and I would probably get that sauce curry next time. it's a little saltier than the panang which I liked. He can handle spice very well and he got a three to start, but will probably get a 5 next time. Smile Calamari (appetizer): My dad ordered this, he said it was good but didn't have any tentacles and prefers those on calamari apparently. He will probably try another appetizer next time. Inside is small but very cute and clean. The lady who served us was very helpful and kind. Food also came out very quick for three people, start to finish took 50 minutes and we weren't rushed or shoved out. Just efficient service. Everything we ordered came out to $90 before tip for three people, but note that me and my sister are vegetarian, and we find that makes things cheaper. Thai iced tea is a must. I'm looking forward to trying their vegetable soup, vegetable dumplings, and one of their fried rices.

If you can deal with the lack of alcohol (lots of sodas and nonalcoholic drinks) then you will enjoy some of the best Thai food this city has to offer.

I just want to let you know we ordered 7 things off of the menu I tasted some of everything and I thought everything was good. We ordered veggie spring rolls and the shrimp summer rolls. Both of these came with sauces I only tried the peanut sauce with the summer rolls. The sauce was a little runny but good flavor. Both appetizers were tasty. I got a Char Sui Banh Mi. Because we are in Philly I was expecting a sandwich that was packed full. It wasn't but it had great flavor which made me happy I would order it again. For the meals we got Tang Tang chicken with tofu fried rice, 2 pad Thai's one spicy with shrimp one mild with tofu, and a shrimp lo mien. The standouts were the tofu fried rice and tofu pad Thai. I thought both were extremely good. The only thing I would not order again is the lo mein it was not bad everything else was just so much better. The Tang Tang chicken had great flavor and was still good after the 15min in the car. My only complaint is the amount of shrimp in the dishes and the meat in the sandwich. With that being said I would go back to this place because the flavors at this place are great,
