    Fun fact: Back in Imperial Japan, the popular Hawaiian dessert known today as 'Shave Ice' (called…read more'Kakigori' in Japanese) was made from natural ice that was brought down from the mountains in the winter and stored in a cave called 'Himuro' (meaning 'ice room' in Japanese), therefore it was considered a rare luxury, and a treat reserved solely for royalty. Japanese immigrants brought their tradition of this cool, refreshing treat to Hawaii, dating back to the sugar plantation days. The correct term, used throughout Hawaii, is 'shave ice', although outside Hawaii, many people (including myself till a few years ago!) use the term 'shaveD ice' (although, to be fair, that is literally what it is). Las Vegas has the largest population of Hawaiians outside of Hawaii, and is a popular holiday/vacation destination for many Hawaiians, hence the reason why this city is affectionately known as Hawaii's 'Ninth Island'. There are many flavor combinations and toppings to choose from, but I got the appropriately named 'Ninth Island' and asked for it 'Dirk Style', which includes a scoop of vanilla ice cream hidden in the middle. I've never had an authentic shave ice from Hawaii, so I can't compare this to the real deal, but I enjoyed it! Mahalo, Meowee Wowee!

Pina Colada shaved ice is the ticket. Not too sugary sweet, not at all bland or boring. It's not all shaved ice or what we used to call snow cones. They also have ice cream, drinks and other treats. Turns out they do fundraisers and private parties. Even the large ones, I'm told. Their truck is brightly coloured with wonderful pictures. The server ever so patient and helpful.
