Very authentic but they missed the mark in a few different ways. The sign says to seat yourself but we weren't actually acknowledged for 10min or so. They only had one server and he was extremely overloaded during a busy lunch time. There were only 2 menus on the table but when he came and greeted us, he simply asked what we wanted to eat. The food was flavorful but not the best. It is definitely an authentic Mexican location that is connected to a Mexican grocery store. The burritos were large and filling but none of us could even finish them without taking half of it home. It was an end to a good night. My mother and I leave the local movie theater, hungry for what we've decided are South Bend's best tacos at Flamingo's Mexican Restaurant, located in #DTSB. We walk in and it's quiet with one couple waiting to be served. We seat ourselves, and watch two servers work: one (with pink hair) busses tables while the other one serves the first couple. While waiting, another couple arrives--now we have one white couple being served, us, and the other white couple waiting to be served after us, or at least that's what we thought. After Pink Hair finishes bussing a table, she walks over to the white couple who came in after us and proceeded to take their order. "Excuse me," I say, "My mom and I were here before them; if you don't mind taking our order..." Pink Hair looks at us, shrugs and says, "I just got out here so..." Hmm, this is not true but it's clear we are not going to be served or at least not in a respectful way. I don't ask for much as a patron but blatant discrimination--not really looking for that. We left. I still can't fully tell you how this made me feel. All I know is, driving home, my mom and I felt like crap. I think I'm beyond being "hyper sensitive"--we were discriminated against and I feel I'm in my right to let others know. So, if you're part of population of South Bend that loves frequenting quaint, hole-in-the-wall restaurants with authentic food, while also being "woke" to what's going on in society, Flamingo's Mexican Restaurant discriminated against two black women on Friday, June 29 around 7:00 PM. The tacos I ordered were nothing spectacular (I expected more than one slice of avocado per taco as well), but with enough tomatillo salsa they were pretty delicious. This is a little colorful restaurant in downtown South Bend. The place is a TON bigger on the inside than it looks and boasts a sizable Hispanic grocery store in the same building! Some of the menu items are tasty, but I'd recommend sticking with basic tacos. I tried the nacho plate once and it was really soggy with wilted lettuce. The tables are sticky and the service is laid back (slow), but if you're doing take out and plan to order then shop, it works out well. I still am a regular at Flamingo's but unfortunately my opinion of them has gone downhill. Their definitely not what they once where. When I first started dining at Flamingo's they were the talk of the town and had extremely reasonable prices for everything on their menu, and would have certain specials on certain days such as dollar tacos on Monday's and Wednesday's. Their Mexican style tacos used to be $1.50 and their America style tacos used to be $2.00, and now they went from $2.00 to 2.50. And all of their other tacos have increased by about 50 to 75 cents. Their Chalupas and tostadas used to be around $3.49-3.99 and now.....they went up to $5.99!!!! My GOSH!!! Flamingo's got rid of their dollar taco days and raised their prices. Also they have gotten stingy with portions for certain entrees. Mainly their tacos. To charge $2.00 for a taco and give a person a small spoon sized scoop of meat per taco...... not cool!!!! Smh. What happened to the old Flamingo's? Why did they become this way? They had a good thing going so just like that old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it!!! I also noticed the former staff that used to work at Flamingo's is no longer there and the staff that works there now either A: are brand new and they don't know what their doing or B: act like they don't want to be bothered serving you and are obviously there for a paycheck and have extremely poor customer service skills. Thank goodness the quality of the food is still awesome. Im saddened by demise of Flamingo's dinning experience and raised prices. My husband asked if there was another bowl of salsa -- TURNS out NO - they ran out of salsa .. husband was positive it was the same bowl of used salsa that was on the dirty table when we sat down. Then we waited 35 mins... no food still... so we left.. we won't return. Waitress help have been awful there for the past year.. nvr the same one but always very lazy women. Ordered for pick up on a Sunday at noon. Ordered a small menudo, chips and salsa. I typically consider menudo to be the measure of a good Mexican restaurant/deli. Food: Menudo - extremely salty, lukewarm (which was very off putting), full of huge chunks of fat and was missing the higher quality honeycomb tripe that we all love so much (signs of a cheaply made menudo), and no hominy Chips and salsa - good as expected Service - service is slow (restaurant was empty), and the girl working the cashier does not know how to properly check an order. I ordered a small menudo and was charged for a large which I didn't realize until I got home. She also forgot to include the tortillas that are supposed to come with the menudo My friends say that they enjoy the tacos/burritos etc so maybe I will come back again sometime and write an update. The sign said daily special $6.99 for taco lunch plate. That not a great price to begin with for a Mexican 2-taco lunch. Wait person said it's an extra dollar because I said "Paraiso style". That's $7.99. I get 2 tacos asada and cold 1/2 cup rice and 1/2 cold beans ( cheese never melted). The finely diced beef was super well done and tough. I suspect it was reheated meat from day before. No long strips like the Yelp photo shows. Who would dice carne asada? It costs $2 for the tacos asada a piece. That's $4 for 2. It costs $2 for a large plate refried beans a la carte and $2 for a large plate rice a la carte. That would be $4 for both rice and beans. Do the math. You get less beans and rice for the taco lunch special...and they charge you $4 for tacos and $4 for rice and beans (cold too). The lunch plate price is identical to ordering a la carte. You actually get charged more for less food. So why call it special?! I ask the cashier about their pricing. She said it's not the special when you order Paraiso style. Has she not done the math? It's not special whether you order the Mexicano OR the Paraiso style. Both are same price as a la carte prices. My assessment is the regulars know this. They are just making a lot of money on the non-regulars who don't understand what they are getting. The wait person was good.
