The staff is very friendly and welcoming, it is such a fantastic opportunity to not only shop small and local, but lend support to the arts as well. They started out as a "hole-in-the-wall" frame shop over on Grand Avenue. Then they moved to their two-story space over on Monroe Avenue a few blocks north of the old Grand Rapids Press. Now they have two sites. I love that they have continued to grow. Their success is well deserved. They support artists in a big way. They help you with your presentation, ie., framing, installation, giclee printing, etc., and they have the perfect gallery space to showcase great work. Their quality of work is always top notch. When you leave your work in their hands, you know it will be handled with great care and an immense attention to detail. I've never felt fully confident with picking out frames on my own for my work, but the staff at LaFontsee Galleries has never let me down. Our combined work is still on my walls from over the years all the way to the 1990s when I moved to Grand Rapids and they opened their first frame shop. This summer, I needed to have several canvases stretched on bars for my ArtPrize entry. Linda LaFontsee and her staff performed an excellent job and helped to make my artwork a success. If I were you, I wouldn't go anywhere else in West Michigan for preparing my work for a gallery show. LaFontsee cares and it shows.

decided to check out Cocoon Art Space for my first time on First Fridays and it was fun!…read more there were a lot of cute and cool things made from local artists. the space didn't feel too crowded and was spacious enough to walk around and look at everything from the art exhibit to the unique little knick knacks. the store is located on the corner with no designated parking lot but street parking wasn't too bad for a friday evening. i would definitely would come back to check out more things for a cute and unique gift and to support local artists!

They have loads of natural light from their front windows which gives their space a warmness. I appreciate that they rotate themes and embrace diversity in their art and artisans. They also offer a wide variety of more moderately priced gifts from stickers to prints also made by local artists. The staff is kind and welcoming. We ended up being about 20 minutes late - I am NOT a late person & I absolutely hate being late but it was very frustrating trying to find the place. My sister called to say we were lost but coming and they were kind of rude on the phone about it. Then when we got there they said 3 times within 5 min that they had another class at 7:15 - I finally just said "should we go?" The set up was a few tables with "stations" set up and a pile of broken glass pieces in the center to choose from, frit (which is tiny beads type things & strings) off to the side on a table. I have done glass fusing at another location not too far away from here & I felt like the other place had a greater selection of sizes on their glass pieces. I also felt more rushed here to get done since they had schedules 1 class at 6 and another at 7:15 - the last place we had 2+ hours and the staff was most definitely more helpful & friendly at the other store. I might go back here....it wouldn't be my 1st choice though.

This gallery, housed where the Chamber of Commerce used to be in the walking mall downtown, is a…read morebeaut. Floor to ceiling windows offer a great view of the artwork whether the gallery is open or closed. The current exhibition by Lissa Hahn is phenomenal -- work that explores movement in photography that creates a textured, 3-D effect without any photoshopping. Her use of super-vivid colors, vibrant photography treatments (such as archival dye sublimation transferred onto aluminum) and the incredible lighting ensured I spotted her exhibition yesterday from a half-block away (and indeed, spotted the artist herself from across the intersection and had to pop in to compliment this peacock of a person on her beautiful outfit and she turned out to be the exhibitor herself.) This is my favorite exhibition I've seen in downtown Kalamazoo in quite some time. 3-D glasses are available for viewing but I have depth perception issues and didn't find they made the pictures pop more for me than they already did. This exhibition is a must-see if you're in downtown Kalamazoo!

Right now the store is covered with an amazing selection of beautiful ornaments. Which are dwindling fast, but the store was covered with ornaments, hanging from the ceiling, everywhere. And such a wide selection. Just to give you an idea of a few of the ornaments: avocado, pickle, cardinal, hamburger, jalapeno and I am so not doing the place justice. The ornaments are glass blown and handpainted /decorated -truly pretty. You could spend all day in there and still see something new you missed, especially on the way out or waiting to check out. Really a lovely place. There is a wonderful selection of handmade jewelery and home decorating pieces. Very eclectic. The people there are lovely and do a great job. Check the place out for a unique gift or something for yourself.

I contacted Saper back in December of 2025, to inquire about their framing process and to figure…read moreout a rough project timeline. I had several similar projects completed in the past in another state, but Saper was unknown to me then. Specifically, I had one large piece of film memorabilia which needed some minor restorative work, and three additional autographed photos which needed custom framing and matting. Four projects in total. I called first and spoke to Jennifer, who gave me some history about the business, which was established 47 years ago, and their philosophy as it pertains to preservation. Jennifer assured me that they use only archival-quality, non-destructive materials and processes to ensure the best possible results. Additionally, I wrote an e-mail and received a detailed, friendly response from Roy Saper almost immediately. I wasn't able to bring everything in until mid-January of 2026 because of some medical issues I'd been having, but once I was able to meet Jennifer in-person she was able to help me to make informed decisions about colors, framing materials, and types of glass. The price I was given was fair and reasonable, and I was told that the projects should take about six weeks to complete, because they were still backlogged after the holidays, which is understandable. I did have one minor thing about the size of the matting that needed to be changed a day later, so I wrote another e-mail and once again received a very prompt and professional acknowledgement. Then, sure enough, six weeks later, I received an email letting me know that the projects were completed! I had some concerns about physically transporting them, however, so I called in to ask about what types of packing materials I should bring. Roy answered, and kind soul that he is, he offered to personally deliver the completed projects, which I graciously accepted. He wrapped all four projects with such love and care, and brought them to my house that very evening. When I unwrapped them, I was delighted to find that everything looked amazing! Jennifer was the one who completed the restoration of the one larger item, and she did a fantastic job. Meanwhile, Nathalie was the one who crafted the three custom frames for my smaller 8x10 autographed photos, and likewise did a splendid job. Every detail was perfect, with an artisan's touch and a clear mind for historical preservation. I could not be any happier with the end results, and I will not only sing their praises forevermore, I will also continue to bring al of my future business there. Saper Galleries and Custom Framing is now my go-to spot for all of my bespoke framing needs. Thank you Roy, Jennifer, and Nathalie, for going above and beyond!

Can't believe I had no idea this was here -- I've walked or driven by this corner a zillion times…read more Both an art gallery and a framing shop, it's pretty palatial and a joy to peruse. Beautifully lit and full of comfy spots to sit and enjoy the art works. They've even got a couple small Picasso statues, and lots of lovely glass art, many of which seemed very fairly priced to me.
