Flavory Bistro is our go-to date night spot, and it never disappoints! It's been awhile so wanted to write another review. The Mediterranean Feast is our favorite --it's the perfect mix of fresh, flavorful dishes that gives a little bit of everything. The homemade cheese is truly something special--rich, creamy, and full of flavor. It's one of those things you just can't stop talking about after the meal! We also love that it's a family-run business, and you can tell everything is made with so much care and attention. Since everything is made to order, the freshness and quality really shine through. If you're looking for a spot with amazing Mediterranean food and a personal touch, Flavory Bistro is the place to go. We always look forward to our next visit!

This place was awesome. The server was great and the food was wonderful! We had the Mediterranean Bruschetta for an appetizer and it had great flavor. The pepper mixture that was on the plate was so good! My main course was an open face burrata cheese and tomato sandwich. It was yummy. If you want a good solid meal this is the place... it surely will please!

"It is what it says on the tin!" Delicious luncheon today with their gyro beef bowl and an oatmilk latte. Impressive speed, efficiency, and attentiveness by the host. They seem to use a lot of eclectic tableware. It makes the decor all the more charming. I will definitely be back!

Ordered take-out, and food was prepared quickly. The falafel was good, but hummus was almost flavorless and the pita was stale. The garden salad was a good size and the vegetables were fresh. The side bread was good (not stale). I also ordered baklava, but it was inedible-- it fell apart immediately and was flavorless.

First time here. Over the lunch hour or so. It was quite busy but I was met and seated promptly. My order was taken pretty quickly. I ordered a turkey panini and a Diet Coke. The waiter ask if I had any allergies which I thought was very thoughtful. The panini was good and tasty. The coleslaw was not creamy as I typically like it but it had a unique taste that I did enjoy. It took a bit longer to get my food than it should but I was not disappointed with the meal. The price was about right for what I was served. Good amount of seating and welcoming. There is a front and back entrance and you can your order to go. I'd certainly come back again.

We stopped here for dinner last night and while it was on the pricy side, the quality of the experience was top notch. Our waiter Matthew was fantastic, with multiple stories to share about the food, the owner and himself. While we didn't get to meet Lisa the owner, the story we heard of her Mom traveling the world with her and pushing her to identify what was in the global foods based on taste was fantastic! As to the food and drinks, we'll start with the Fresh Margarita (see picture). While pricy @$12 and small, it was one of the best margaritas we've had. I ordered a Beef Gyro (which had lamb mixed in with the beef - see picture). Both the Gyro and the tzatziki sauce were delicious. My wife ordered the Seafood Paella (see picture) and we both really enjoyed it. My wife makes our favorite Paella, so we both have become critical of most restaurant Paella. While we are used to lemon in the recipe, Lisa's alternate use of lime and green olives were unique and added to the character of the dish. The only thing holding me back from a 5 on the Food rating was the Baklava (see picture). Again, my wife had made some really good Baklava and we have enjoyed it on numerous occasions at restaurants and food festivals. As the picture demonstrates, this serving was average at best...thin, square, dry and relatively bland in taste. A disappointing end to the meal given how fantastic the main courses were. It's strange to find something so good in Ankeny of all places, but here we are! I expect Ankeny will play host to many more local gems as the District area grows. Flavory Bistro serves delicious food in a quaint environment. Sometimes I wish it was more decorated, but the food is just so, so incredible that it doesn't really matter. The beef gyro is my favorite item on the menu, followed by the hummus plate with extra pita. Sit at the bar, order a glass of wine, and then go from there. Note: when you sit at the bar, Chef Lisa often offers you samples. Always say yes. read more

This is a nice little cafe kitchen with a quaint cafe counter, lounge area, and ample seating to enjoy a hand made juice, glass of wine, and of course the great food and deserts. Gyros are the best with lots of meat on a fresh bed of lettuce and tomato, savory hummus and tahini sauce. The tahini could be a little more seasoned for my taste but just dip your well seasoned fries in it and you have yogurt cucumber bliss. Owners are super nice and food is promptly delivered with care, great place to have a down to earth conversation with family and friends. Will be back to try the Mediterranean platter when I'm super hungry backed with homemade baklava;) read more

Dude. The @flavorybistro in Ankeny is a must try. Amazingly delicious hummus and our gyro was top notch. Their French fries are even worth the trip! You gotta go to Ankeny and check them out! Our table ordered all the same beef gyro which made them run out of meat and caused us to wait longer, but the owner took care of our drinks and a complimentary hummus plate as we waited. Super sweet and attentive owners/chefs and he even surprised Our daughter with a cookie on her way out for being such a good big sister. I can't WAIT to go back and try more! read more

Enjoyed an evening here with family. Very friendly staff, helpful and pleasant. We ordered the Seafood Paella and Mediterranean Platter. Both dishes were a tremendous serving of food. The paella was delicious. Lots of shrimp, scallops. Excellent flavor. We ordered this for four people and took plenty home. The Mediterranean Platter was also delicious. Wine selection was good, beer selection is limited to domestics. Atmosphere is pleasant, limited seating but we were seated immediately. Open kitchen where you can watch them prepare your food. My wife and I ate for less than $30/ea including two drinks. read more

Such a disappointment. We have reservations set for 6:30 on Friday night. We arrived about 10 minutes early, and we were seated within 5 minutes. Then was sat, and sat, and sat. At 6:50 we finally got up and left. No waiter had even taken a drink order for us. We sat completely unacknowledged for 25 minutes. They were very busy, but this was completely unacceptable. Too bad, because the food smelled fantastic. If you're going here, don't expect great service. read more

I went here with my boyfriend who just had a coffee here. We didn't get any of the food but the menu looked awesome. We watched other people's dishes and they looked great as well. What really makes this place 5 stars is the service! The place is run by a husband and wife and they treat their customers right. I never write reviews for service but they went so over the top to make us feel welcome that I am giving this 5 stars hands down! Will definitely be coming back to try their food! read more

My boyfriend and I went to eat here on a Friday night, and we were so pleasantly surprised. We both love Mediterranean and have recently dabbled in being vegetarian, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. We both decided to sit at the counter and ordered a bottle of wine to split. For dinner, we ordered the Mediterranean plate and a side of the risotto. Someone scolded us for approaching an empty table without being seated by a staff member. No one greeted us, there was no sign telling us to wait, and everyone was just working behind the food counter. Bad first impression, decided not to wait and see how poor the rest of the experience was going to be and left. I didn't feel like walking back to the front to get behind a bunch of people who walked in after us. Oh well, another restaurant we really enjoyed got our business instead. read more

I would of given this 4 stars if the service had been better. A half an hour into waiting for my lunch salad my friend says "oh you don't come here if your in a hurry, but the food is great!" The food was great! The atmosphere is very harsh and cold. read more

This is a new place in an area that has recently finished being constructed. I think they will evolve as the area matures. It's a barebones place without any special feel or charm. Kind of loud...I think it's the acoustics of the narrow room and hard furniture: nothing to absorb the sound. The lady who waited on us...great smile. She wasn't all that sure of herself or especially knowledgeable of the menu...but, I'll bet she was pretty new. The food...very tasty. It took quite a while for it to emerge from the kitchen but it was attractively presented...and ample. Lunch for 3 adults and a child was about $50...I thought it was fair. They do have vegan options...which is a Plus for those who have made that commitment. read more

Took a group of 5 here for dinner after reading some reviews. The food was excellent and we will definitely be back again. I had the salmon with veggies and a side Caesar salad. It was probably the best Caesar salad I've ever had. The salmon was cooked to perfection also. Everyone in our party was happy with their meal. Be sure to check this place out! read more

Came here for lunch with family while visiting for the holidays. I had the Greek Salad with Chicken and it was fantastic. The salad was fresh and the perfect size. I love that it came with a fried egg and delicious fresh baked bread. And the service was great as well! Our favorite greek place in Des Moines! I would recommend the platter/feast to share between 2-3 people or the gyro. The service is decent, however be prepared to wait a little longer than average for your food. When you taste the food you will not regret the wait. read more

It is apparent right away that this place values quality ingredients and treats those ingredients with respect. Wonderful service, despite being slammed at lunch. We had the Mediterranean Bruschetta to share, the beef gyros and Italian panini. All three were winners for me. I can't wait to come back and sample more of Flavory Bistro's offerings! read more

The establishment name says it all. Flavory is how best to describe my experience. Although i went traditional with my Beef gyro, it was sliced thick beef/lamb served with fresh made hummus and tzatziki sauce. I recommend sitting at the bar and getting to know the family serving up this wonderful food. Friendly people. I also got to try the ceasar salad as well as the lentil soup. Oh my gosh!! Excellent food! Very fresh ingredients and amazing service. I have eaten here several times with friends and family and it never disappoints! Small and cozy place. The staff are always friendly and the place is very clean. It's nice that you can see them making the food as the kitchen is open to the dining area. This place is great - fresh, quiet, fast, friendly! The dish I had was wonderful. The only drawback was I had trouble finding something on the menu to order. The menu seems long enough because it's front and back, but this includes: breakfast, sandwiches and main dishes. I would like to see a little more for appetizers, maybe flatbread pizza or something similar? My husband has talked about coming here with me sometime but also just didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I'll return though read more

The falafel gyro was really good. The tziki sauce was the best I have had. We also shared the vegetarian panini, but, asked for hummus instead of cheese to veganize it. But, halfway into the sandwich we realized there was cheese. We did not tell the server since it was half eaten. Fortunately, neither of us has a dairy allergy. I am in town on business and came in for dinner with a co-worker. Our meals were amazing!! I had the lamb and my co-worker had the salmon - both were seasoned to perfection. The roasted vegetables, risotto, and lima beans were also very well executed. The staff was friendly, and the owners made us feel as though we had been invited to dinner in their home - so welcoming and warm. I will be back in town in a few weeks and cannot wait to come back! read more

So excited to have an authentic Greek restaurant in Ankeny so close to home!!! The waiter was super nice and the chef made sure we knew the specials! Super friendly!! This is a business that is passionate about their business!! They even gave us a sample of the Mediterranean steak special we were curious about!! The interior is modern but super welcoming with homey touches from the quiet seating area to the mismatched dishes!! I am so happy that they have lamb!!! It was cooked perfectly and perfectly seasoned!!! Not at all dry with a nice grilled flavor!! Grilled veggies were delicious with a nice seasoning and grill char. Loved the asparagus especially and the charred garlic!! Cesar salad was phenomenal !! Nice tangy dressing but not over dressed on crisp romaine lettuce!! Spanish steak/Mediterranean steak was so juicy and flavorful!! It was super nice they brought us a sample!!! One of the best bites I have had in a long time. Cocoa almond baklava was a wonderful ending to an amazing meal!!! Super flaky while not being too sweet!! This homemade desert was made with a lot of love and care like everything else here!! This is some of the best Greek cuisine I have had!!! So flavorful but not over done!!! This is an amazing new addition to Ankeny! I can't wait to come back!! read more

Interesting place. I love Mediterranean food because of the fresh ingredients, vegetarian options and amazing flavor. The restaurant was very clean and the interior very nice but the menu was limited and difficult to determine what was actually included. I ordered the falafel sandwich and was not sure if it came with any sides. The wrap came out with a small bowl of cucumber and tomatoes mixed with taziki sauce to put into the wrap which was good. The falafel was a little salty compared to others I have had. I was disappointed that they did not have any appetizers or sides of hummus and pita, tabouli, grape leaves, etc. read more

LUCKY ANKENY!!!!!! We stopped by Flavory Bistro after church In Ankeny today. Our meal was truly out-of-this-world delicious. No kidding. I had the green juice of kale, cucumber, apple and lemon. It was a generous serving, made on-the-spot and yummy. Steve had a delicious expresso. We ordered the soup of the day. A chicken/vegetable that was the BEST soup I have ever had that was not made by my mom who truly was the queen of soups. It was a perfect blend of herbs, veggies and chicken with an obviously home-made chicken stock. Lip-smacking good. For sandwiches I had the vegetable panini, and Steve had the Italian panini. My vegetable panini was again one of the BEST sandwiches I have ever had..avocado, asparagus (perfectly cooked...not too limp, not too crunchy), portobello mushroom and cheese with a red sandwich sauce that was indescribably delicious. Along side was a coleslaw. Not the usual glop you get, but shaved slaw with a delicate dressing that just made your mouth water. I am not kidding. I didn't taste Steve's sandwich, but after eating it he wanted to immediately order a second one. HA! We had a baklava and a petits fours for dessert. Perfect. Now, this is a family run affair, so they will be open seven days a week from 6:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. EVERYTHING is hand made. We came here because my wife's nutritionist recommended it. We weren't disappointed. Very nice find in suburban Ankeny. We both had gyros. Mine were chicken grilled in an herb marinade. Very tasty and healthy. My wife had the falafel gyros. Their falafel is a mix of garbanzo and fava beans. That was new to us, but very very tasty. The gyros plate comes with flatbread, lettuce and a small side of humus. The humus was really tasty as well. I also want to call out our two servers. They were thoughtful and attentive without being overbearing. It took the food a little while to arrive, but even that was good as it allowed us to relax and enjoy ourselves. This is probably the best Mediterranean Restaurant in Des Moines Metro area. Every time we go there, I intend to order an entree but still end up with the Appetizer Tray. It is fabulous with the assortment of food they put on it. What really makes the place is that Hector and his wife are always there to visit with you and serve you. I stop by here about once a month. It is right across the street from Cold Stone Creamery & close by to Magee's Irish Pub & Eatery. The owners are very friendly and involved.
