Took a friend to Nonna's Pizza & Pasta for their 49th birthday... I hadn't really researched it other than knowing people said they did pizza by the slice and by looking at their menu online before we headed that way. Parking is great. It's in the same building as Filet Steakhouse. Down on the Southeast corner... It's not exactly what I expected. Don't expect the atmosphere of Baratta's, Latin King, or Cosi Cucina. The front dining area is more informal. Don't take that wrong though... I'm not taking anything away from it. The place has a great vibe to it and I felt comfortable. I loved the NYC themed decor and the look of the place. There is at least one more dining area called the Manhattan room. I'm not sure if this is a private room or what it exactly takes to get in there... It sure looked pretty classy through the doorway though! The process is more or less order at the front counter. Pay when you order. Seat yourself. Self serve drinks (Coke products). Silverware and napkins can be picked up by the drink station. While you order at the counter the food is brought to your table when it is ready. Seating is all low top tables and chairs along with a few stools at the bar. I noticed a few people picking up menus, going to a seat and browsing the menu and then going up to order. This is probably what I would do next time if I was ordering anything but the pizza by the slice. The service we had was really good. From the gentlemen at the front counter and register...along with the staff who were working the floor dropping off food and bussing tables. The menu is quite extensive! Everyone can find something. Appetizers, soup, salads, pizza by the slice, round pies, square pies, thin and crispy, gluten free... Calzones, hot and cold sandwiches, pasta dishes, chicken and shrimp entrees, salmon, desserts, and kids meals. While I do like pizza... And they have a HUGE selection of pies in all kinds of combinations...by the slice or baked fresh... We both tried pasta dishes. 1x Shrimp Parmigiana 1x Stuffed Shells sub alfredo 2x House salads (creamy parm and blue cheese) 2x Fountain drinks Complimentary bread with our entrees The wait for our food was short. Our salads came out first. Everything was fresh and tasted good. One thing... Some of the pieces of lettuce could have been chopped a smaller. Made it a little harder to manage than it should have been... Easy fix though... Make sure you grab a knife. I'm not sure if that's normal or if it was a one off. Not a big deal. The pasta dishes hit the table along with the complimentary bread... If you go here just for pizza by the slice... You're really missing out! Their pasta dishes would easily rival any of the places I listed above when I mentioned atmosphere. The portions are large. I had to do something that I don't normally do. I took some home for the next day. I'm usually the guy who gets irritated because someone writes... "I can easily make three meals out of what I was served...!" We stopped in here on a Saturday night and it was busy, but we easily got food and had a place to seat. My boyfriend and I both ordered a slice of pizza. You get to choose from several options that are in their display case. We also ordered garlic knots. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The pizza was delicious and I can't wait to try other toppings. I love that you can just get a slice, so when it's a small group everyone can get what they want without having to order whole pizzas. My favorite part about this place is the staff. All the employees are so kind and so helpful. We sat at the bar, so we were able to chat a little bit more with the people working and I am so happy we did. We have gotten slices here several times and love that there's just an option around ankeny to get a slice or two with so many flavorful options that's ready to go quickly. Recently, we also ordered several full pies for a baby shower. We ordered the day before and they were hot and ready at pick up time! These were a hit at the party! We met some friends for dinner at Nona's on a Tuesday evening. None of us had ever been there before. I had "Nona's Special" - sausage and peppers in "pink" sauce over spaghetti. My wife had the Meatball Parmigiana hero sandwich. When the food came, we were blown away with the portion size; everything was just huge. My pasta was very warm and exceptionally flavorful without being too hot. My wife's sandwich and fries were equally good. Even the complimentary loaf of bread for the table was above expectations. I love sausage & pepper pasta, and I would rate Nona's every bit as good as at Centro. We didn't sample any of the NY-style pizza, but it looked great. We will be back for pizza on Friday. My fiancé and I have been coming to Nonna's for a little over a year now and I can confidently say it's better every single time. We've tried a fair bit of the pizzas and the Sofia Loren is the best in our opinion. Talk about awesome service. It took me ages to get here but so glad I went. You walk in and immediately you're standing at the pick your slice counter just like in NYC. Tons of choices to select from. I picked the Sicilian with pepperoni, the Margarita and chicken bacon ranch. I loved the Sicilian and Margarita - both crust and taste were awesome. I liked the chicken on the cbr, but it was just okay. The slices are HUGE as you can see in my photo. My husband had the Grandma's, the Supreme and the sausage arrabiata. It was pretty spicy for me. The grandma's was fantastic! We got fountain drinks as well. The place isn't fancy, but the service was fast and friendly andthey have real silverware. The pizza is awesome and since it's by the slice you can try a couple different types but they are big so only need a couple at most. Sometimes, it's super hard to go and eat at pizza places when traveling. Especially for my family as being from the Chicagoland area, Pizza is a specialty, and many times, we rate it against all others. However, I had moved to the east coast and learned what NY style pizzas are. After reviewing others who reviewed Nonna's and showing my daughter the menu, we were sold. Let me explain. My daughter loves Barnelles Vodka Penne Pasta (Portallos) and has mentioned many times with living in the Des Moines area. She hasn't yet found a place. That all changed today. She loved the suggestion to add crispy chicken to the dish, but she noted it doesn't need it. The pink vodka pasta was great on its own. We also liked seeing the slices available to order so we all could enjoy just a slice, but these are not your average slices. I say jumbo, and I couldn't even finish mine. So we picked slices as well as 4 slices to share with my party of 3. Hawaiian, meat lovers, bacon cheeseburger, and bacon ranch chicken. Then we also added Chessey garlic bread, "Oh momma Mia"; everything was so good. I'm so happy we found this little charm, and having great personality and food makes a visit worth the trip. Until I return, I plan to try the Ziti pasta dish that was suggested on my next visit as I love some good veggies in a good sauce. Thank you for having some good laughs with my family.
