We just moved to the area and while checking out gyms, we smelled this place down the street. It was nearly lunch time and there was a very short discussion on where to eat. As is the case when the aroma of Flavory hits your sniffer. We were greeted by Lisa, the head chef and wife of Hector (sp?). Sunday noon crowd was light a d we sat right away. We were greeted by their bubbly brand new server who offered us waters, menus, and silverware. The owner came over and introduced himself and made light small talk. He asked how we heard of them and was quite amused by our olfactory based decision. The food was delicious, simple, and clean. We both order a gyro (beef and chicken) and I ordered a side of fries. Once we saw the gyros, I realized I didn't actually need the fries, which were good, but not a Flavory original. The gyros came with hummus and tzatziki and were stuffed with meat and lettuce. Was very disappointed here, second time we have been here and the service is very slow, they need more staff. Got the feast and the Tzatzika sauce was runny like it had been watered down. I'm Armenian and the so called Baklava was not good. Armenians call it Paklava but what they make isn't close. Our water glasses were empty several times and I had to ask for refills twice. I was looking for a coffee shop when I tried this place. I took a seat at the bar and it was like sitting in my mom's kitchen, if my mom were a Mediterranean chef. I ordered an Americana and the falafel salad but didn't expect such explosive flavor. For $6.95, it was one bunch of fresh chopped romaine with seasoning salt, fresh made tzatziki sauce, a big scoop of house made hummus, and five good size pieces of fresh made falafel. Every bite was crunchy, fresh, healthy, and flavorful. While I was sitting at the bar, the owner/chef let me taste her cabbage soup, gyro beef, homemade cheese, gluten-free cookie and cake, and her AMAZING paella! I'm telling you. The gyro didn't have tomatoes and wasn't swimming in tzikiki sauce. The hummus appetizer was pretty good and decently filling. Flavory Bistro Flavory Bistro is located in Prairie Trail in Ankeny and is a family owned small restaurant that serves not only great Mediterranean dishes but some pretty mean sangria. The staff hustles to bring out your food and is very helpful in selecting menu items. We went there as a party of four on a Saturday evening and started with a sharable Mediterranean plater ($21.95) with a Greek salad, hummus, roasted peppers and veggies, baked lima beans, falafel and bread. The falafel was extremely good and similar to what I remembered I ate on the street in the old section of Jerusalem. The Mediterranean platter had good flavor and an appropriate dish for 4. Several in my party ordered the Sangria and it was just as good as the Sangria my wife and I had enjoyed on the Costa del Sol in Spain. If you go try the Mediterranean steak that is a marinated flank steak sliced and cooked medium rare as ordered. On a previous visit I enjoyed the Gyros served with tzatziki. Next time I plan to order the Paella. The owner and his wife (the cook) are always around overseeing the staff and they enjoy talking to the diners. I cannot say enough good things about Flavory Bistro! The food was simply amazing and the service was phenomenal! My husband and I shared the Mediterranean Feast. Seems like a pricey meal at nearly $40 for the one dish, but it was worth every penny! We have enough leftover for at least a second meal, if not a third. The feast included lamb, chicken, hummus, cucumber salad, a couple other salads and homemade bread and cheese. Yes, that pile next to the bread is not butter, it is cheese! Been here several times since it opened awhile a go. Food is amazing here! Problem is the service. Every time I stop in, it's slow and poor service. My personal favorite was one time I walked in with a few others and we saw some tables that just needed to be bussed. A guy that appeared to be the owner says "I can get someone to clear off table for you guys if you give me 20 minutes because as you can see, we are busy." We walked out after he said that. Once they learn how to handle busy crowds (perhaps hire more people or get a host ), then this place will be golden! read more

Went on the recommendation of a friend. Couldn't be happier. Warmly greeted by Hector the owner. His lovely wife Lisa does the cooking and is amazing. We has the meat and cheese tray which also came with homemade bread. So fresh and good!! My husband and I each had 2 glasses of wine. The plate was enough that even my steak loving husband was full. The food is tasty, but don't come if you're in a hurry. It took almost an hour to get 2 paninis and 2 smoothies, and, to make the experence more fraught, the waiter got one panini order wrong. I'd like to like this place better, but watching the kitchen help standing around as we waited was just not fun. I'll start with the good stuff: I got the falafel gyro and it was very good. The tzatziki was excellent. There was plenty of food. The restaurant is very clean and the food is cooked in sight. What I didn't like: the place is super loud and I couldn't have a conversation in there. They took a long time to take our order. The hummus is not good (it's too thick and needs more flavor). The baklava was soggy. I also would have appreciated some onion or cucumber offered with the gyro, as it was literally just romaine lettuce and falafel/meat. Also they don't have any traditional dober kabobs, so I'm not sure how they're making their meat. I'm not super impressed with this place. I've had much better Mediterranean food from tiny family shops. I'd recommend one of those over this, but the food is fine if you're looking for a decent healthy lunch option in the area. read more
