I personally tried on 3 brands and at least 8 types of running/walking shoe before ultimately deciding on 2 pair for now, as well as purchasing one set of inserts. The staff were all extremely helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. They listened to my concerns and questions about specific physical issues and concerns related to walking long distances. I like that they have my purchase info on file so that I can easily replicate an order and also keep my other choices in the queue when I'm ready to add to my collection. Prices are comparable to other retailers, including online options. Store is clean, well maintained, and inviting. Parking lot and adjacent roads can be a bit cramped and congested, so I try to visit the shop during less busy weekday hours to reduce my stress. read more

So, casting aside the hours I'd spent reading reviews, I opted to replace my worn kicks with a pair that I knew worked. Came in while traveling looking for in stock shoes. Having wore the same brand and model for years, I thought that it would be a problem when it was out of stock. Ben to the rescue! Ben asked me if I had time for a full fitting. He set my expectations for how long it would take. Heard my desired features and said if his recommendations didn't fit my needs then I should get what makes me happy. He was polite, enthusiastic and put me in the most comfortable shoes I've bought in years. Lastly, as I'm a Librarian, he made a personal connection by asking me what I was currently leading. Had a shockingly bad experience here today. I went in for new insoles to add to a new pair of running shoes I ordered online. I knew what I was looking for because I had purchased another pair at a Cincinnati location I just wasn't sure where they were. When I asked the kid who worked there he looked at my shoes and said "are you just wearing those around?!" Confused I asked him what he meant and he said "you just walk in those?!". I had literally just gotten the new running shoes in the mail and was wearing them to see if I liked them and to get the insoles so yeah I was wearing them around as if it mattered. He proceeded to laugh at me in my face and gave the other employee a funny look as if I was an idiot for wearing these shoes. He told me they were not for walking and when I asked why he didn't explain or offer any other options. Normally when you buy insoles for the shoes you're wearing they help you cut them down to size but he didn't bother to offer and honestly I was ready to get out of there. I purchased my insoles and left but I kinda wish I hadn't. It was the most uncomfortable shopping experience I can remember having. Moving forward I'll shop online or in another city. Prior to going here I checked the website to ensure they had at least ONE pair of shoes I liked. I looked online and found the following shoes (the website stated they had them in stock) I found Hoka Mach 5 women's size 7 in two different colors just in case I didn't like one or the other, #3ASICS nimbus in size 7, #4 cloudmounsters in yellow and grey size 7, #5,#6 & #7 hoka Bondi in 3 different colors. The man who just checked someone out came over and says hello do you need help? I say yes and his response was oh ok well he will help you shortly. Ohhhhhh k... so we waited. Finally a young tall guy (all I knew was he wore some Altra shoes) I first ask for cloudmonsters with the neon yellow bottoms light grayish on top and hoka bondis ultra light grayish color with neon yellow rubber souls. Both size 7. The man who was helping us seems high or just ultra off... he was in a constant state of confusion and happiness with a splash of chuckling...he gets the shoes out and tosses it on the floor to me saying here's this. I looked with confusion like what???? At no point did I ask for olive green shoes(cloud monsters he brought out) so I'm like ummm no... he then hands me the Hokas IN BLUE AND ORANGE!!!!! Again no- I inquire about the asic. nimbus - he states nope don't have them, onto shoes 4... ANY of the hoka Mach 5 in ANY color ...???Nope... this had to be a joke that or they simply did not want to sell to us for what ever reason????? They stated on their web site all 7 shows where in stock at fleet, hence why we drove all the way there. I can understand one shoe not being there but all 7, then telling us without even looking you didn't have ANY of a particular shoe. It was literally every shoe I asked for. I could not have been more pleased with my trip to Fleet Feet. I have been running for years, but never stopped in to be properly sized and fitted for running shoes, because I was afraid of how much it would cost. Now that I finally stopped in, I don't know what I was afraid of. I just want to say, I loved the energy. When I walked in, they were set up for handing out packets for an upcoming race scheduled the next day. I informed them that I was just there to purchase shoes, and I was immediately assisted by a sales rep. She put me on their machine where she measured my feet, arch, stance, etc... she watched me walk, she sat down with me and went over what the machine measured and what she saw as I walked. We discussed the difference in shoes and what would work beat for me and why. She then brought out several options for me to try on. I eventually settled on the perfect pair of shoes for me. I loved the one on one with my sales person. I loved that I didn't feel rushed and was free to ask questions and try on many pairs of shoes. I loved that she didn't try to sale me just anything. The computer recommendations didn't line up with my preference 100%. She listened to what I liked and found the perfect compromise so I would still get the support I needed as a runner and still gave me the personal comfort I liked in a shoe. Not to mention, the shoes I chose just happened to be on sale and on top of that...they offered military discount. I paid less for my shoes than I would have at an over crowded mall shoe store where I would be just one of many just trying to get someone's attention to try on a pair of shoes. Certainly the shoes are not as cheap as what you'll find on sale racks at certain shoe retailers but they are also more likely to work with the mechanics of your foot/stride and may even last longer! Women's gear, men's gear, name Brand, triple crown swag, shoes, hats, headbands, gloves, energy chews...see so much in a small pop up shop! I purchased a headband that my ponytail fit through the back. Yay! Not many of those. I wanted gloves but they only had medium and large and I have super small hands. I had previously purchased mine at BlueMile (who I still love too!). But I have the Highlands Card, and on Wednesdays, you can use it to get 10% off your total purchase at Fleet Feet. So my shopping location decision was made. I also intended to register for the Triple Crown of Running while there, but they didn't have registration sheets yet. After asking me a few questions (the shoes I had been using, was I training for anything in particular, any problems I've been having) and having me walk barefooted to see just how flat my flat feet are, and measuring my feet, I was presented with three shoe options to try. It turns out I am a Brooks girl! I will probably be back here (on a Wednesday :-P ) to get more things as I become more of a *real* runner and as my races get closer.... They have the latest version of most popular athletic shoes and clothing. If you have any foot issues, they are helpful in recommending the appropriate shoe for you. They have treadmill in the store so if you like, you can run or walk on it and they will watch your form to see how you "land" during your foot strikes. After hearing great things about Fleet feet, I decided to go and wish I hadn't. I walked in to an appointment with two associates who just looked at me like can I help you? Zero warm welcomes here. I told them I had an appointment and the associate who "helped" me was the worst sales associate I have ever encountered. I can't stress enough -- the condescending tone, unwillingness to help, and "I hate my job" persona I received throughout. I felt like more of a burden, than a customer who just wanted some recommendations for some running shoes I was asking questions that anyone who isn't an experienced runner would ask. These were met with blank stares and awkward silence 10/10 times -- when the associate finally responded, it was a snarky 1 word response. They got up repeatedly when I was trying on shoes, walked off without saying anything and made sure to let me know they didn't give a $@&! that I was in the building. Numerous times, I thought like, "hey, uhm did I do something to offend you?" Or "should I just come back later?" I left the store with the shoes that I had read reviews about online, bc it got to the point that I didn't feel comfortable discussing the shoe being offering to me to try on. I set a goal in 2020 to start running. I never dared tried before unless being chased or forced, so this was a hard goal. However by April I ran my first 5k and picked up some momentum. I went twice during the last year to the Bluegrass Outlets and purchased shoes from Nike. However, after putting some pretty steady mileage on the last pair, I noticed how much my feet were hurting. I dived into some research and decided to book a fit appointment at Fleet Feet so that I could really get a pair that was suited for my size, shape, and width over just a brand name. The measuring process was super easy and VERY informative. I was able to get a better picture as to what fit would be best for me. The sales person was also amazing. He jumped right in and brought me options and recommendations for insoles that were just such a perfect fit to me. He asked me if I was partial to any brand but I expressed my need to find comfort above anything else. That is what I was able to get too. I found a very comfortable pair of Hoka shoes that are light weight and very cushioned. I am super excited to take them for their first outing and begin to add up the mileage in absolute comfort. The whole process is very easy and no pressure to buy. They send your measurements to you right away before shopping even begins so that you do not feel held hostage to buy. Made me feel very comfortable with my feet (I hate people seeing my feet). She did a 3-D of my feet and helped me understand what I need. I have started running. I am starting to become 'that guy,' who is into running and reads about running, saints preserve me: I am writing about running. Also, the idea of spending over $100 on a pair of shoes for sportsing seemed absurd to me as early as last month but spending $300 on a pair of boots to stand about in? Absolutely a wise, considered, adult choice. I do not sports. My friend Kathy, (Kathy Van Halen, HBIC, PhD, PHaT) suggested STRONGLY that I go here to look at shoes because proper running starts with the proper fit of the shoe and the right socks. I was able to sneak out of work and go there on a Sunday afternoon and spending money at a local business and following the advice of Kathy and the blogs not withstanding I am a terrible person. My toenails needed to be cut and I wasn't wearing socks, this is disgusting and inappropriate. I can never apologize enough for this and I will never outlive this shame. Apparently, this is par for the course because Becca (who helped me) acted like this wasn't rancid and disgusting. I certainly felt ashamed. She measured my feet, watched me walk, and found several shoes and was able to explain why each was different and the benefits of each. This is important because not only are my feet disgusting they're also poorly structured. I'm way, way at the shallow end of the gene pool. Yes, I could have gotten shoes at a different place for less money but Staples is called Staples and they sell staples. Other sporting goods stores don't sell what is on the name of their stores but they are staffed by them. There is something to be said for buying something from someone who knows what they're selling and also uses the product. They have a great selection of brands and styles within those brands. They have this fancy foot scan machine you stand on and it tells you all about your feet. The young woman who helped me was super nice and presented me with plenty of options (even though I told her that I wanted to stick to the same brand I came in with). We reported the issue immediately upon opening the box and were told it was going to be next week before we even get an email with a return label. Never saw myself writing a review for a running store, and I'm still not a runner, but my husband and I have both had such great experiences at FF that I have to share. After years of getting shoes from Zappos mainly based on looks and price, I talked my husband into going for a proper fitting as he's been getting a little more active recently and it seems important to have good support. I went for my own fitting a few weeks later. The folks who helped us could not have been nicer. No judgement whatsoever about us not exactly being athletic. Part of the fitting is using some very fancy equipment that measures your foot electronically, and then you get to see images of your foot on an iPad. It was actually way more interesting than it sounds! And the staff know their brands/inventory well enough to pull only shoes that will likely complement your foot shape. They explained the features of each shoe and gave us plenty of time to try them on and walk around. We never felt rushed, or again, judged, which was my big fear going to a store like this. The staff shared with us that they also serve a lot of healthcare professionals and others who are on their feet most of the day. I am on my feet A LOT for my job. I used to live in Lexington and always went to John's ru/walk shop for my shoe needs and had great luck, I was hoping to have the same result with Fleet Feet but unfortunately that was not the case. My first trip, the employee was super friendly but not really helpful. I ended up returning the 2 pairs I purchased after my feet were killing me from a long shift at work. The second employee that helped me was GREAT but still had ankle, knee and hip pain and limping by the end of a regular shift. The staff is great but the selection to chose from is so small compared to John's. I spent almost $350.00 with Fleet but will be returning and making the drive to Lexington for John's. Fleet Feet is far more than just a shoe store. It IS a great place to buy running shoes. The store is spacious and well-organized, with knowledgeable associates and a treadmill for trying out your new kicks. There is also a large selection of running attire, nutrition for runners (might I recommend the gummy Clif Shots on your next long run!), and must-have items like massage rollers for recovering after you have pounded the pavement. Located at the corner of Taylorsville and Bardstown Rd, it's also close to a nearly infinite variety of great running terrain. It's precisely this location that helps make Fleet Feet more than just a shoe store, as this location makes it a perfect place for running groups to congregate and start off on a long run. For me, it's the running and training groups that really make Fleet Feet stand out. I happened to stumble upon Fleet Feet when I was looking for a group to help me train for my first KDF mini Marathon this year. I started with a Google search for training groups, and also had an endorsement from a friend who had run with Fleet Feet in the past. For a fee (due at the beginning), I signed up for their training group, which included pre-routed runs three times a week, speed workouts, weekly emails that included running and nutrition tips, access to a registered dietetian, weekly yoga (led by Susan from Lakeside), and informative workshops (good form running) and demos (eg: recovery rolling). Well, almost 4 months later, I crossed the finish line! It never would have happened without the camaraderie I had with the other runners and the sense of community that was fostered throughout the training season. Went to fleet feet to get sized for a new pair of running shoes. They used a machine to analyze the dynamics of my feet. The girl brought out a few pairs of shoes that she thought would fit my feet well. A few weeks later I went in because I didn't think they supported my feet well enough. Another employee recommended an insert for support. They fitted me for an insert they didn't even have in stock. When I got the insert over a week later, I continued to run in the shoes and often ended up with blisters making running difficult. I didn't take them back right away because I continued to tell myself I just need to break them in. Finally I went into fleet feet for them to tell me what else could be wrong with the shoes and why it feels like I'm slipping in them. The employee could tell just by looking at them that they were too wide on my foot. He was helpful and seemed knowledgeable about perhaps a better shoe for my feet. Then another employee informed me that I had waited too long and they couldn't be exchanged. I don't have the money to buy a new pair of running shoes less than 3 months later. Dissatisfied with the customer service at this store because I went in there for assistance and was simply persuaded to buy something additional until it was too late to exchange a shoe that just didn't fit. read more

Louisville runners unite! That's what goes down at the Fleet Feet store on Bardstown Road. Their selection is top notch, but what really gets my goat is the established running community that gathers there to bond together over injured knees, torn Achilles tendons, and proper stretching. Every time I visit, I learn something new by listening to the staff help other customers (so if you catch someone staring at you in the store, I promise I'm not stalking, just eavesdropping to learn a little something). The staff is extremely knowledgeable and provides excellent customer service, especially for newbie runners that resemble deer caught in headlights when they walk in and find out that in order to get fitted for running shoes, the staff suggests running on a treadmill...in front of everyone in the store....while your feet and ankles are getting videotaped. While it may not sound like the most comfortable experience in the world, it is very beneficial for the staff to see how you pronate in order to recommend appropriate shoes. They will spend as much time with you as necessary (my fitting for my first pair of "real" running shoes took over an hour) in order to ensure that you're getting the best bang for your buck and that your feet won't fall off when you run in them. They also have a multitude of services for the most seasoned runners, such as running groups, training teams, training programs, etc., in order to help you step up your game. If you are new to the area and looking for a running group or recommended courses, the store is your ultimate resource. I tend to only review restaurants, but had such a great experience here I wanted to share. I am new to running. VERY new and knew I needed to get some proper shoes and I knew that I needed to get them professionally fitted rather than go to a big box store and do it myself. Yes, I had to wait, but they had adequate staff and a LOT of customers. The reason I had to wait was that the staff was working with customers and I wanted that same treatment, so It only goes to reason that I would allow others the same priviledge. So I finally had my turn and the young lady (so sorry I do not remember her name) took all the time needed to find my shoes. I never asked about brand or price, I just trusted them. And I am so glad I did. They took the time needed to check my waling and running style to make sure my feet were functioning the right way with the shoe. I've been waiting to see how my shoes were prior to writing this review. Good news is that I love them!! In my quest to try and live a healthier lifestyle, one of my goals this year was to complete one race a month (5k, 10k, half, virtual...doesn't matter as long as there was a bib number involved.) I've browsed here before while picking up race packets so when it came time to upgrade my running shoes, I figured "why not?". I WISH I would have gotten the name of the person who helped me. She was so great! She talked to me for about 5-10 minutes about different brands I had tried in the past, problems I've had in races or in training with my shoes and what kind of race I was training for. Once we got the nitty-gritty out of the way, she had me step on a device that measured my feet and reviewed my gait, the shape, and more. While I've been favoring a specific brand lately, she gave me other brands to try on as well so that I had something for comparison. After trying on 3-4 pairs, I stuck with my favored brand and ended up with a great pair of shoes. I also ended up with several pairs of socks and the knowledge that if for some reason, my shoes didn't work out - I could easily return them within 60 days. As a result, my normal shoe shopping experience is overwhelming when trying to decide between aesthetics and function.
