We love to see a bookstore thriving!! This is so much more than just a bookstore (and adjoining…read morepaper/confectionery/novelty shop). Its a community hub! I recently moved to Bellingham and Village Books (and paper dreams) actually really swayed me to move here. Its a book palace, 3 stories of well organized selection. The front facing books are well chosen, and the used books are interspersed with the new books. There are quite a few staff picks sections, all of which are super interesting and worth looking over. Three days before Christmas 2025 I was there trying to pick out a horror book for a friend of mine. Horror is not my genre (more of a fantasy and literature gal myself), so I for sure needed guidance. The shop lady spent so much time reviewing the whole horror section with me . When we couldn't find the main book we decided on me buying, she spent the time looking everywhere for it. She enlisted the help of two additional staff members. When she was needed for another task, she made sure one of the other shop ladies had me covered. I ended up ordering the book, which came in a few days and they texted me when it arrived. Easy peasy! I will never forget that experince, especially as the store was jam packed with x-mas shoppers. Village books in fairhaven is the spot! My only note is that their bookclubs could be better. The bookclubs are during the day and don't have different genre selections (they are mostly nonfiction). There is a silent reading bookclub that I might try. They could be cultivating different types of communities (ie book clubs geared towards romantasy, sci-fi, literature, etc.), but maybe that will come with time.

This store seemingly has it all; great selection of books, both knew and used, lots of old wood, and a staff that seems knowledgeable if a little bit unhappy. The last part can explain why the vibe is just off. It just doesn't feel comfortable nor welcoming, and if I had to put my finger on the cause, I would say it is likely due to management. I witnessed firsthand how the store manager ignored customers in line waiting to pay because he was on the phone. You never ignore the customers who are right in front of you. I wish the store all the best, but I'm gonna take my book shopping business elsewhere.

Yesterday my neighbour put paper from FedEx on my door with their "sorry, they missed me"…read more... 1) Your "Sorry" is not accepted. You never arranged wiith me about the day and time you will come, so, why do you expect me to be at home? 2) No idea why my neighbour is involved and what is his role in our with you business. 3) At your paper i was asked to come to your office after 1pm next day. Extremally not comfortable time for me, and again i was never asked if i can come this day and time. I have made a time and came to your office to pick up my pursel, despite of it has broken half of my day ectremally important plans. When i came -- pursel is not there! and i am asked to come again on weekends! I am sorry, i am working on weekends and i can not ask my boss about days off every day because of your disresponsibility. More then that, i was asked why no one at my home, at the time when the pursel was attempted to dliver like is your daughter not at home or anyone else? " No my daughter is not at home, first of all because of i do not have a daughter, secondfully if i have, she is not obligated to sit at home and wait for you unlimited amount of days and times without arrangement with her about that. You did not reach anyone to arrange, so, why did you come? My time is expensive, and moreover nervous system what was stressed by you. I have waisted 4 hours of my time, doing what you want and all day stressed. I did not work and did not earn money because of you asked me to come to your ffice , i did not receive my pursel because of you did not have it and i did not have rest because of got stressed by your disresponsible actions. Who is going to pay me for that? You have to pay for your disresponsibility, 1 hour of my work costs $110, i waisted 4 hours + all day stress. Who is going to return me my health after all? And this is not the end, I still did not receive my pursel. I would tolerate if 2 years old child would expect me or "my daughter" (whom i even don't have!) to be unlimited amount of days and times at home waiting for your delivery without any idea when it is going to happen, but such way of thinking from adult people is can not be tolerated.

I needed to mail a sympathy card to an old friend in the U.S. who lost her husband recently. It…read morewas important that the card be delivered without a problem such as insufficient postage. So I wanted an actual human to approve the amount of postage I had placed on the envelope. I walked into Yaletown Express for this purpose. There was one person working at the Canada Post counter. She was looking down and seemed busy dealing with some papers on the counter. So I politely waited at the head of the queue. After a moment, she looked up at me and said "Yes?". Her face was expressionless, appearing just a bit annoyed. Her voice was flat. I walked up to the counter and asked if she could confirm that the amount was correct for a letter to the U.S. She looked at it for a moment and set it down without a word. I may have sensed a slight nod of her head, as if to indicate it was OK. Without looking up at me, she said "Anything else?". I said, "No, thank you very much" with a smile. I made a point of looking right at her, in the hope she would somehow acknowledge me as a person. She just kept looking down with the same glum expression and didn't utter a word. I walked out of the store thinking to myself, there's someone who must hate her job so much that she can't even show minimal pleasantness toward a customer. I literally felt as if I had irritated her simply by entering the store. This person should not be dealing with the public, and certainly shouldn't be representing Canada Post. Let me add that I've used this outlet many times before, and have mostly received pleasant service.

Where there are hordes of Chinos, there is bound to be at least one SUP Bookstore. What may seem a…read morebit confusing at first, SUP (#1) is no question/greeting, but rather the abbreviation for Sino United Publish (#2). In Chinese, its "San Lian Shu Dian" or "Sam Leen Shu Deem" but if you didn't already know that, its likely the book selection isn't for you. I note this because virtually all of their books are published in Chinese. Lots of materials that were never given an English Cliff Notes version (aka Chinese Literature) will be on full display here. Whether its a New York Times Best Seller translated into Chinese or a How To book on anything, it's going to be available here. What do you do when you're not exactly Chinese literate? First of all, you'd probably have to figure out why you're there. Are you learning Chinese? Buying a gift for someone who does? Best ask an associate for some recommendations for a good read. And yes, ask one who speaks a reasonably good amount of English. The service has been good here, the crowds rarely flock here (#3) and the prices seem fair though a non-bookworm (aka me) has a hard time parting ways for any hardcover book for $50 unless its limited edition or includes an entire volume set. Audio books, here I come. _________ (#1) Personally, I like "Sup Bookstore(?)" much better. (#2) Publish..ers. Sometimes we like keep things shorter. I mean short. (#3) Does anyone read anymore?

This place has a fairly good selection of books of the Asian origin if you know your language well…read more This is one of the few bookstores I've found outside of Asia that carries a lot of text-based book series versus manga or comic type books and they also carry a lot of informational books or reference type books in Asian languages that you wouldn't find, say at Kinokuniya. I am surprised by this because this is pretty rare for an Asian bookstore which would usually consist of a lot of Asia culture type items like toys and stuffed animals as well as little trinklets here and there. Now onto the re-learning of Chinese ...
