The shop is crammed full of antique-y type stuff, like curio cabinets, funky old chairs, old old opera glasses, animal heads, large boots of bygone years - The sales person is very hands off, and this is a store for browsing, not for people to follow you around, asking if you want to buy some strange-looking objects that resemble ancient butt plugs. Not that I can't appreciate this stuff in all its overpriced glory. I do like the funky collection of items here, but I also can't help but feel that Old Grandma Mabel from over a century ago is looking down on us and laughing that the old magnifying glass used for her rectal exam in 1889 now being sold here for 1000 times its original cost.

This is a pop-up shop and it is located just to the south of Jules Maes in the building that used to house the Vespa repair shop. It will be open for 60 days here only since it is a Pop-Up shop off of her main showroom on 17th Ave. SW. It may stay open longer than the initial 60 days if it does well. Definitely worth a pop in to the pop-up shop that opened on the Sup Pop Silver Jubilee day.

Housewright Gallery has been established since 2018, but this was my first visit (6/10/23). It's been awhile since I've done neighborhood art walks or visited specific art galleries or museums on a routine basis. I've only stopped to view installations in Belltown and First Hill this year. So it was great find to seek out specifically Housewright Gallery on S. Bailey, next door to Mezzanotte. It was a rainy Saturday and the neighborhood was setting up for two concurrent outdoor events. I was able to navigate the detours and found nearby street parking before the community festivities commenced. I wanted to check out Housewright Gallery's annual Pride Summer Salon, featuring mid century to current works from Northwest School artists and a collection of silver gelatin photographs taken by Kurt Timmermeister. I consider Kurt a modern day renaissance man. As mentioned earlier, this was my first visit to Housewright Gallery and did not know what to expect. I was warmly welcomed after I introduced myself and my intent to see Kurt's featured photos. It was great to view all the gallery artwork and photography up close, at a distance, and wander freely. I've been binging on my favorite Canadian interior design show segments, so it was a thrill seeing all the beautiful, carefully curated items throughout. I also gravitated to the furnishings, book collection, and Japanese ceramics. I enjoyed my visit and absolute admiration for the overall collection from the variety of artists and craftspeople.

Renate Ruby, shop owner, is basically a curator of craft. She travels to the factories of the furniture lines she represents, for example, so she speaks from the perspective of someone who has really dug in deep to get the know her products from the inside out. Warning: only get her started on the properties of quality linen if you are prepared! That girl knows her stuff. She's scouts out things like small-batch wallpapers and dishware that are not readily available. So that's cool. The other thing I notice about the shop, well check the hours before you drop in, is that there are occasional events that bring people I have never met together, Once, there was a salon-like gathering and the presentation was on perfume. Again, small-batch, hand-crafted product. Because we live in a world that increasingly feels mass-produced (maybe it's my reaction to the myriad of cranes and skyscrapers being build in this SeaTown), it's important to find and share these gems. The store is filled to the brim with charming items you'd want to take home, including some apparel, jewelry and bags. I went back the next day with my partner, and we bought some outdoor rocking chairs, a loveseat and some side tables, as well as a cozy alpaca blanket to use in our yard. They were having their 20% off anniversary sale June 8-, so I feel very happy about the shopping on Saturday. The reason I say "maybe" to the "would you recommend?" question has to do with my personal experience on Friday, when there were fewer (2?) employees and also fewer (2) customers in the store. Make of it what you will. As a POC and someone who walked in there in some athleisure getup with no purse (just the phone), I felt like some of the staff may judge a book by its cover. I obviously seemed interested in the furniture, tried sitting on them, curiously took photos of them to show my husband, but until I took the initiative to say hi, the employees acted like they wouldn't have any time to spare for me (2 employees talking to a white lady, 2 customers). I purchased 2 sets of Graf Lantz coasters and a bag that day. I was asked if I was in their system/reward program, but at no time was I asked to be added to the system. Also: I only found out about the anniversary sale starting the next day, because I overheard them telling the other customer and asked about it. (If I hadn't overheard, they might have lost a $3K sale.) Only after I went back with my (white) husband in a better outfit, I feel like I got more eager help. Again this was just my personal experience on a particular day, so your experience would of course vary depending on your/store's circumstances. It wasn't an overt profiling, but more like a series of small subconscious (or conscious) choices out of habit. To a person who's experienced this kind of dismissive behaviors from many a storekeeper, it may seem more like micro aggression. On the positive note, after my bigger purchase, I earned enough points to get a $100 discount! I feel like this is a pretty good reward program. I wish I could figure out a way to use this discount online/have things delivered, since I don't live close to the store.
