Shawn Murrin, repeatedly used racial and homophobic slurs while talking about another gym in the area. It was extremely uncomfortable and inappropriate. On top of that, he was often distracted during sessions, frequently on his phone and not paying attention while training myself, other clients, or during his group classes. This kind of behavior shouldn't be happening in a professional environment, especially in a space meant to be welcoming to everyone. I do not recommend this gym. Holy. Mother. Writing this review from the floor as I'm not sure I can walk after such an intense workout. That being said, all positive! Real friendly and Eric took the time to check on me throughout to make sure I was feeling okay. I have a wedding in 7 months and need to get in shape - after one session only, I can tell that this is going to be the easiest, best and most fun way to do so. I told them I lost my job and couldn't afford it. Even sent them proof. Their response was literally "Sorry to hear that, we'll sent to collections in September ". This gym got me into boxing and I'm so happy it did. Peter is an excellent guy and trainer - very tough but kind! The classes are incredible and always somewhat different. The gym itself is really cool, the music is fun, the people are friendly, and the training is tough: what more could you want? Came here to try a class and was super excited to try boxing for the first time and incredibly pleased by the experience. James made the class totally accessible for a beginning and checked in on my form to make sure I was safe effective many times. The crowd was supportive but super independent into their workouts which was perfect and the entire workout was a great challenge but no injuries. JESUS CRIMINI!!! Still very sore from the free fighter conditioning class last night! Our instructor Shawn was very helpful, informative, and hilarious! He took us upstairs to give us a 30 min intro to all the moves we will be doing in the actual class. The 30 mins intro was a workout itself! Wait until you go downstairs to the actual class........ The actual class is a group class based on real fighter conditioning and everything is timed into rounds. Imagine anything to get your heart rates up - punching heavy bags, shadowboxings, and Russian twist! Then comes the killer for me, sprints around the ring, suicides, and more punching! I was drenched in sweats! My best friend and I ended up getting the groupon for 5 classes. So we will be back! My advice: parking is a bit awkward to find. Your gps will take you to the crossfit gym located in the back of Peter Welch's. The actual gym itself is located in the back, so get back on the street and take the next left into the small alley. Also, the gloves smells really bad! Try getting your own boxing gloves! read more

I recently moved to the Southie area and had only taken all-female boxing classes without gloves. I decided to try Peter Welch's as it's in an ideal location in South Boston and I was extremely happy with my experience. I was a bit intimated at first, but we were privately briefed on the different types of techniques that may be called out during the class beforehand, giving us time to learn and warm up. The class I took after my training session, Fighter Conditioning, was exciting, fast-paced, and very motivating. I had practically never boxed before and I felt like I was challenged by the class, but able to keep up with the pace regardless. It was an amazing work out and the instructor was awesome! They give you gloves if you don't have your own pair - would highly recommend to any female who wants to try something new for a great workout. read more

I have never boxed before but wanted to get into it especially because PWG is right near my new apartment. I did the trial class and it came with an introductory session. The classes have a great mix of cardio, boxing, and strength training and even though I workout everyday, I was exhausted at the end of the session. The trainers are super welcoming and friendly and push the class as a whole but let you go at your own pace if you get tired. I was a little nervous to be walking into a boxing specific environment but that concern was complete knocked back as soon as I entered. The people who work here really care about what they do and want everyone to have an amazing experience. I took the Fighter's Conditioning class offered through ClassPass, and I got a hell of a workout. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: - No judgment zone! The range of people skewed from boxing newbies (like myself) to amateur fighters, and perhaps former fighters looking to stay in shape. There were definitely more males than females, but overall, I liked that skill level was of zero concern. - The instructor was really nice and kept the pace of the class going. There were barely any breaks, which helps if you want to keep your heart rate up. - There are boxing gloves to rent, but you get a free pair for your first class. - Definitely a great mix of cardio and plyometric training. Even though it's touted as a boxing class, it's more focused on getting your body in fighting shape. Cons: - The gym was tough to find. I ended up in the wrong location about 5 minutes before the start of class. Try to leave there early to give yourself enough time to settle in. - Even though the class is great, there's hardly any explanation of instruction. From my perspective, it seemed the class was full of Peter Welch regulars already prepped for the 60 minute workout. I had to ask some girls behind me what I needed to start. They told me to grab a jump rope, and that we weren't even using boxing gloves for the first 20 minutes of class. It would be helpful to have the instructor give everybody the roadmap beforehand. Overall, this was an excellent workout, and it really helps take away the cardio boredom burnout. read more

i started coming here about a month ago and i think it's one of the best decisions i've made recently. firstly, it's a great workout - LOTS of cardio, tough strength training, instruction in boxing technique, and plenty of drills to target your abs/core. you'll be under constant direction from a trainer. if you show up and work hard you have no choice but to get in shape. punching bags, jogging, yoga-like stuff, weights, pull-ups, jump rope, medicine balls, partner drills, etc. don't worry, you'll feel it in the morning. secondly, it's fun as shit. i'm relieved when class ends, but within a few hours i'm looking forward to going back. work my ass off under instruction from professional trainers while i get to punch a lot of shit and listen to loud rap music knowing i'm getting a great cardio workout and whole body strengthening? how can you go wrong? plus the trainers are cool. and there's really no "i'm the toughest guy in the gym" kinda attitude like you get at other places. there's definitely a core group of regulars, but everyone's pretty friendly. i guess the bottom line is that i used to lift/run at my old gym but here i get a much better workout AND i look forward to coming. plus i'm much more adept at fist fighting. which is a nice little bonus. read more

The fighter conditioning classes are intense & amazing. Did I almost die during the first class? Hell yeah. But it just further more confirmed how out of shape I am & pushed me to sign up for a membership. These classes are exactly what my rotund burger eating, French food loving A$$ needs! I haven't been this excited about trying something new since they opened that Five Guys on Huntington ave! The staff is extremely friendly which is such a plus! There's a reason why this place stays with 5 stars. What everyone says is true. This place personifies that saying "you ain't gotta be an asshole to be good or to tell the truth". I've yet to have a bad experience (I mean all the workouts and drill remind me that I am old -- but I end up being hella young in the real world). This place gets packed, but you will get personal attention as someone is always walking around making sure your technique is on point. The classes run from early morning to night and by staff that is knowledgeable, passionate and interested in you doing your best. It's confusing to get to, but anything worth having is never easily attained (so make sure you get to the place 15 minutes ahead so you have time to find it, but this is just the first day when you getting there). And by the way, after the first time taking a class here, you'll want to sign up immediately. They won't let you, they give you an introductory offer of 70 bucks for a month of all you can eat (or take classes), use of the workout room and 30 minutes of personal training and then, once they peeped your habit, they will sign you up for a plan that fits you. This place is huge, but you'll get seen. Don't worry. The classmates are a hit or miss. Some of them look like they are in the advertising/marketing/tech/public relations arena so that feeling to prove something is there. But don't let that deter you!!! This place is awesome. I've been a member here for about two years now. Its a great community, everyone is super friendly and is "there to work." I use the weight room several times a week at 5:30am and 6pm, usually there's limited to no wait for one for the five squat racks. Though worth noting its mostly free weights (barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells), no cables. I also go to the strength circuit class, which includes weight work, ropes, sleds, tire flipping, etc. Sean is a great instructor. He's attentive for new people, giving them a detailed run-down of the class format and corrects exercise form. Additionally, the gym has ample parking. Overall I couldn't recommend this gym enough, it's been a fantastic experience. Recently some facility changes have made me reconsider membership, due to personal preferences. After submitting an email to the manager, Peter approached me personally at the gym to address any issues. read more

Whelp, just got my ass HANDED TO ME. As someone who has CrossFitted for almost 2 years and trained for three full marathons I literally have NEVER been so out of breath before in my life after just 10 minutes. The instructor for the 7:30pm Monday night class was VERY GOOD; I like when they are like a drill Sargent and kick you ass.. it's awesome. I think the work out is SOLID: full 50 minutes of cardio with only about 3 minutes of rest which is spread out in 1 minute rests for each section. I was DEF confused on how to box (and well at that) but felt like I could keep up enough to get a very good work out. They offer a 10 class card for 100 dollars which I plan to do although if you have wrist issues I would STAY AWAY because I have tendintious and feel like my wrist is already sort of bothering me :/ Anyway, seems like a great way to work out hard core... Have been wanting to try a boxing class for awhile and finally signed up at PWG after a friend recommended. It was fantastic! Instructors were super welcoming and made sure to show me the basics before the class started. I did a "fighter conditioning" class and it was a great mix of cardio- left exhausted but energized to do more and have since signed up for a 20 pass punch card. Went in for an Intro to Fighter Conditioning class and took Fighter Conditioning after, and genuinely enjoyed every minute. I've been a member of PWG for almost two years and it's been an amazing experience, I have lost a lot of weight and I'm probably in the best shape of my life. The workouts are 50 minutes long, intense and varied throughout the week. They also offer boxing instruction later in the day and weekends. Workouts include: cardio, plyometrics, bag punching, weight lifting, etc. The trainers are really good, courteous and respectful. Each has a different training style: Endurance, Technique, Weight Lifting. For a more cardio workout I recommend Tom, for weight lifting, Derek. The facilities are big, with a lot of room to work on your own, although recently there has been a spike in attendance, it must be new years resolution. There is a weight room in the top floor and a private training area. So if you feel like just working out on your own, you can do so upstairs. The class schedule is extensive, but I would suggest to add a 8:30am class for those going to work later. I would also add a night class at 8:30pm. Overall the gym is exceptional and well worth the money. Peter please don't run more Groupons! It will degrade the quality of the gym!!!! read more
