This company is top notch! Hubs built me window boxes out of 100+ yr old barn wood. Those boxes were gorgeous BUT joints failed when the wood soaked up all the moisture. Enter-Flower Window Boxes-to the rescue!! We ordered replacement boxes in the modern style. I placed my order and FWB had them built right on time. It's their peak box making season so I was super impressed when the boxes were ready when they said they would be!! An added blessing was I live in GA so I was able to pick them up from their warehouse. Everyone was so nice! Boxes are high quality. Don't be fooled by cheaper versions online. These are solid pvc NOT hollow core. I also feel good about buying an American made product, materials are even American sourced. We will most likely go back to them for corbels for our house. I don't leave many reviews but just had to take the time to share my experience with flower window boxes. I wanted to change the look of my home and fell in love with wooden gables. I looked everywhere but the quality looked cheap. I chose flower window box company even though they are 4 states away from me. Ordering was easy, I called, they answered right away (no automated robot) they were very helpful in placing my order right over the phone. My gables shipped a couple of weeks later but were lost by the transit company. I called Flower window boxes and they sent me 2 more customs made gables within 2 days!!! Wow what service! I put them on my home and it's the perfect addition to our finished project! We have all the neighbors green with envy!! I would recommend them to everyone! We purchased the 24" and 36" Charleston window boxes from FlowerWindowBoxes. They arrived well packaged, look great, and seem very sturdy. To install the 24" box, they recommend using two 3/8"dia x 3.5" long lag bolts to permanently screw the box into the wall studs. However we wanted the boxes to be removable, so we opted to forego their mounting kit, and use 3/8"dia x 4" long stainless steel hanger bolts instead of lag screws. The extra 1/2" is needed for a 2" OD 3/8" ID stainless steel washer and a 3/8"-16 stainless steel nut with a nylon lock insert. The studs on our house are on 16" intervals and are centered on the windows. Thus the recommended installation instructions for the 24" long box of using two screws to flank the center of the window would not work. So we used 3 screws - one into the stud in the center of the window, and two flanking that into the wall planking (note you can use 3.5" long screws into the planking, but you will still need the 4" long screws to go into the stud). I mounted a small bubble level (IRWIN 1794484 Aluminum Line Level with two small stainless washers on one side to shim it properly) on my Makita drill, and drilled the ¼" dia hanger bolt pilot holes very slightly tilted down away from the house to ensure water would not travel towards the house. I then used a 3/8" dia drill to drill 1" deep though our cedar shingles so they would not split when screwing the 3/8" hanger bolt into the ¼" pilot hole. As recommended, I also liberally applied caulk into the holes and onto the bolts as I screwed them in. To screw in hanger bolts (instead of lag screws), you need to temporarily use two nuts on the end of the bolt, put a wrench on each nut and tighten them together. This then allows you to screw in the bolt by turning the outer nut, which won't slip if the inner nut is tight against it. Screw the bolts in before mounting the box, then loosen both nuts using a wrench on each nut, and remove the nuts. I then attached the boxes with the stainless washers and lock nuts. The recommended installation instructions call for caulking the top of the box to the house, but I wanted these boxes to be removable. Since my window sills overhang the box and are only 1/2" above the box, I was not worried about water entry there, but since the boxes are tilted slightly toward the house due the slope of the shingles, it was possible for water to travel towards the house along the top of the 5/8" edges of the box. Thus, I placed a small ridge of caulk, ¾" long, crosswise along that top edge of each side under the sill, which channels any drips back into the box. This small ridge is only on the box and does not contact the sill above it. I was also worried that water seeping out of the bottom drain holes would travel along the bottom of the box and stain the house, since the box is slightly tilted toward the house due to its mounting against the cedar shingles. It turns out that these drain holes are ¼" dia, and we had ¼" OD plastic drinking straws which fit perfectly inside the drain holes. So I cut a straw into ¾" lengths, coated them with a little caulk, and inserted them into the drain holes so that the top of the straw segments are just below flush with the inner drain holes, and extend about 3/16" or so below the underside of the window box. Now when water drips through the holes it falls directly downwards rather than traveling along the underside of the box toward the house due to surface tension. If using the "self watering PVC tubes", be sure to test them for leaks first before covering them with dirt. One of mine arrived with an improperly glued tube, so I needed to glue it back together. Another seems to loose water very quickly, but I am reluctant to unbury it to fix it. I do know that at least one was sealed properly because I was skeptical that a piece of plastic rope would actually wick up water, so I filled the tube with water and was amazed that the water was actually sucked 4" up the wick. I am still a little skeptical that the wick won't eventually get clogged up with minerals as the tap water evaporates in it. But time will tell. Anyway I am generally pleased with these boxes. read more

When we moved to our apartment, we bought several cedar planters that were custom built for the space. After nine years, they began showing signs of wear. We'd been told initially that plastic liners would significantly improve their longevity, but most planter liners at garden stores or on-line are quite flimsy. There are only a few places that will build a custom liner to fit an existing planter, and perhaps only a couple of them from solid materials. From the moment we discovered the Flower Window Boxes website, we were impressed by the quality of their products. They were even featured on the Today Show. They have a number of designs for planters and window boxes, but they'll also make a plain planter liner in any size desired. From the outset, we were impressed by the knowledgeable personnel who responded to our questions. They were able to design custom liners that fit our existing planters to within a 1/8th-inch tolerance. The liners arrived after only one week and they were well-packed in cardboard boxes, and lined with solid styrofoam that was custom fit to the individual planter liners. Each liner was made from solid, 5/8-inch-thick PVC, and they were heavy. When my husband put them into the planters, it was amazing how precisely they fit. The liners look terrific! They're brilliant white and look beautiful filled with potting soil, ready for the fall planting. They contrast nicely with the gray cedar of the planters themselves. I have mixed feelings about this company, but in the end I am happy with what I got. Living in San Francisco with a tiny handkerchief garden, mostly shaded, has made it almost impossible to grow herbs. And I like having fresh herbs available when I am cooking. Last summer I decided to re-purpose a stretch of porch railing into an herb garden. The sad, ancient, droopy plastic flower boxes dried out so fast I couldn't keep anything alive in them over even a short vacation. I went looking something better and found Flower Window Boxes. The name pretty much says it all. They make planters in every size and shape you can think of, and offer custom sizing that will precisely fit the space you want filled. And they have a reservoir watering system. Since my biggest challenge with my old boxes was how quickly they dried out I was very attracted by that feature. I thought a long time about what I wanted. In the end I ordered one really big box, 60 inches long, in the deep, wide version, with the reservoir. My set up has my kitchen window at one end of where this mounts and I wanted to be able to open the window and pull out the faucet sprayer and fill up the reservoir right from the kitchen sink. The box arrived quickly, and it looked huge, and was exactly the size I had spec'ed. But there was a big problem. The box was built with a dividing wall in the middle, clearly to provide structural support for this huge heavy box. And the reservoir system was not one, but two systems, for each side of the box. Which would make trying to water the far end impossible with out carrying water from the sink out to the filling pipes in the middle of the box. This had not been indicated anywhere in the ordering process. If it had I would have worked with them before hand to see if they could modify it and get it how I needed it. Instead I figured I could do an ugly job of cutting out room at the bottom of the partition for the pipes to pass under. I contacted them and requested that they send me the additional pipe pieces to connect it all together or a new reservoir system that would match the size of my box. They refused. A company that bases a big part of their business model on doing custom work couldn't be bothered to cut a couple of bucks worth of PVC pipe to fix my issue. I was steaming mad. I fixed it all my self, cut away space to allow the pipes to pass through, bought the pieces to connect it all up. It is a bit cobbled together, but once I was done I had a system that allows me to water a 60" box from one end. It's been hung and planted since July now and it looks good. And I planted it with a mix of flowers and herbs and they are thriving. It's lush and healthy with the self watering system in place. I water it every few days, and when I am out of town it gets watered maybe once a week. I came back from a 3 week trip and everything was fine, a bit limp, but once I watered it heavily for a few days is perked right up. The healthy root structure preserved the plants even during a mini drought! The best thing is this week I did a Thanksgiving dinner for 13. and I picked right from my planter box outside my kitchen window the sage, thyme, parsley, rosemary, basil and chives that I needed for cooking! If I ordered again from them I would just make my own reservoir system. Some 2" PVC, a drill and a small saw and some nylon rope is all you need. And especially for a big box, it's just as easy to do the whole job since you are going to have to jury rigg what they send you anyway. So 5 stars for a great product, but sadly, 1 star for customer service. read more

I just got my 60" PVC flower box. I am a huge snob about plastic flower pots etc and I trusted the reviews and went out on a limb and ordered this box. It is totally amazing! It is super thick and sturdy and one would NEVER EVER guess that it isn't wood. I am going to paint it the color of my trim and it is going have such a custom look. I feel like I have a stellar product for an even more stellar price. I couldn't possibly be happier. Side note- my self water feature was missing one of it's wicks. I emailed the company and within an hour I received an apology and a new wick is already in the mail coming my way. Customer service seems to be as good as the product! read more

What a WONDERFUL company and product! I live in Auburn California with a house on a ridge. I wanted containers on my deck that A. I could easily move as I age. B. self watering C.
