Everything I saw was healthy and well cared for. There is so much that it takes a while to choose! Friendly staff, tons to choose from, healthy plants. As Arnold said, 'I'll be back!'

I'm never in this part of town so 'getting' to drive here was a pleasure. I love that I am still…read moreable to 'discover' Nashville these [redacted] years later. And it was doubly exciting because I very rarely ever shop at a nursery or go in search of one. This was one for the ages. It may not be the first place that comes to mind when holiday shopping but I had the idea of gifting a series of flowers that align with birth months, anniversaries and special memories as gifts. Think of it as 'art' that lives in your yard. But that's about all I had figured out. Luckily, the folks at Bates took care of the rest. First things first, the place is large. It's not overwhelmingly so (so, not Opryland) but it's big enough that if you don't know what you're doing or what you're looking for, you're going to be the Sims character who just spins. Not being shy about my lack of clues, I walked up to the desk and said what I was trying to do/buy and I didn't know what else to do after that. After being complimented about my thoughtfulness, I was tag-teamed: I was given directions to find a specific person to talk to about flowers and another about shrubbery. Given that you will actually be walking through distinct areas/zones, I was given landmarks to note. I appreciated all of this. I was a fish out of water and every instruction was a sign of kindness. I found my first contact (who had been given a heads up by walkie talkie) and she was awesome. She was so awesome that I just went all in with flowers and forgot the shrubs. She explained zones, planting times, soil, perennials vs annuals, etc. I took notes (seriously). And then she started walking me through the selection. Bates.Has.Everything. They do. Don't ask. Just trust. And a side effect of having everything is fair pricing. They have everything and they have a lot of it so you aren't on the hook to spend a lot due to scarcity. I left the nursery with a bit of an education, plants that mean something to the recipients and continue to adorn yards, money in my pocket for other gifts, and a good feeling from shopping local and supporting a business that's been around for almost 100 years. There are so many cool businesses to discover on Yelp outside of food and drink. Dig in, explore and patronize what makes your metro unique.

It's received a call on Friday that I was having a poinsettia delivered to me. I asked them to put…read moreit on the front porch as we were going to be gone for a couple of hours. There was no plant on my front nor back porch. I called this morning to explain it had not arrived, and the manager, Alex argued with me that it had been delivered at 2:00PM. I told him that I needed to receive another one so that I could tell my mother about it and thank her. I offered to pay for it if necessary. He said the driver had delivered it, but that they would send a replacement " free of charge". My husband went outside to bring in a box and we saw the poinsettia down the driveway next to the road at the mailbox. When he went down to get it and to take a photograph, the new delivery gentleman pulled up. My husband told him what had happened. He apologized stating that the other driver " should not have left it there". When I called Alex back to say the mystery of the first poinsettia had been solved, he cut me off stating his driver never would have done that! I said well he did. He then argued with me that I should've been home yesterday in the first place, but that I had pushed them to drop it off. He then said, My driver left it at your door. I don't know how it ended up down at your mailbox". I said ask your driver from today. He and my husband saw it at the mailbox. He then said again they had replaced it " free of charge". He was extremely rude and defensive. Obviously, the first delivery man did not leave the plant in a safe place. That is not my issue. My concern is that the "Operation Manager" implied that I was lying about the situation. Mistakes will occur. What matters most is how they are handled. I never post reviews positive or negative. However, this was too egregious to let pass.

The flowers were beautiful but I had requested no leaves and absolutely hated the green velvet stems they put in my bouquet.

We had read somewhere that Acme Feed & Seed (in an historic 1890 building) offered a quieter alternative. We gathered around a nice table near the stage on the first floor, and maybe there were a dozen other people there? Yet, on the next Broadway block things were in full swing? We weren't complaining, but wondered why? The first floor at Acme has been described as a high-energy "Funky Tonk" atmosphere featuring a main stage for live music, a large bar, and fast-casual dining. Our band during our stage was even a little different than that, and what an enjoyable group is was! The Mudbug Stompers brought us the sounds of old-time jug bands, Dixieland jazz, blues, trains, baseball, and crawfish boils. Although this is a Nashville Band, we could have easy been on or around Bourbon Street in NOLA. I was particularly impressed with the trumpet player and the lead singer who played a mean mandolin. Add the string base, sax, and fiddle, and we experienced a very impressive whole. We were highly entertained and engaged, and we're still talking about the experience!
