The first 15 minutes was her stepping all over me with her feet and using her knees to dig in to my back and legs while she wiggle her legs. This was not comfortable and hurt in all the wrong areas. She then proceeded to use some oil and finally massaged me with her hands and sometimes her elbows. Her style of massage was quick and rapid pulse pushes with her hands and fingers and I really dislike that style. I prefer long deep presses which is more soothing and relieving to me. At times she would receive a phone call and talk to her customers while massaging me at the same time (this happened twice). Or she would sort of shout out behind the curtain when new customers who walked in. This is very unprofessional in my opinion. She was very attentive and with a super nice personality but the massage experience at this place is not for me. I walked out of this place stressed and not at all feeling relaxed.

Graduate school and a lot of computer time has not been good for my neck and shoulders, but each visit to Amalia's has made my back healthy again! She maintains great pressure, and really gets at the areas where the muscles are tense and tight and where all of the knots are. I always walk out feeling like I have a longer neck and with no pain! Her treatments are relaxing but also therapeutic, and also the most effective treatments I've come across for my upper neck and shoulder pain. I appreciated that not only because Joe wasn't too chatty (he and I did chat a little bit here and there, though, which was nice), but because I have received massage from over 70 massage therapists in the Seattle area over the past 20 years, and there are very few therapists that I feel comfortable enough with during the FIRST session to not feel at all compelled to chat with the therapist quite a bit during my massage. I usually want to know who is massaging me! I get curious about the person!! Haha. I can honestly say I've never received a massage quite like the massage that I received today from Joe. I enjoyed some interesting stretches, some neck work that felt very needed, and some great mid-to-low-back bodywork. Part of my Deep Lomi Style massage was done with me positioned side-lying - my favorite position in which to receive massage. I had checked in advance with Joe via e-mail about his safety procedures, and they're sound. He was able to leave the window open (at my request) during my massage, and he had an air purifier going also. He wore a mask for the entire duration of the intake, the massage, and the check-out. The music was soft, not too loud or intrusive, and it provided a lovely background noise. The lighting was perfect for me, I prefer the lighting to be slightly darker in the massage room since it's more relaxing for me that way. Joe checked in about the level of pressure, and he was very open and responsive to my feedback - which he strongly encouraged me to give - about level of pressure, position of my body and head on the table, preference for bolstering, any areas to avoid or go lightly on, type of oil used, and anything else that made the massage experience truly special. I felt that Joe went above and beyond to make sure that I felt cared for and attended to. Usually when I review a massage therapist here on yelp, I explain that I graduated from Port Townsend School of Massage in 2016 - however, I have never practiced massage professionally, since my life ended up going in a different direction at that time. So, I know a bit more about massage therapy than someone who doesn't have this particular educational background. Everything was super safe, and she wore a mask the entire time, while we had a mask on when face up on the table. It was also super convenient to get the massage at home instead of going to a spa We're both former collegiate athletes so we've had our fair share of deep tissue massage. Mia's massage was deep and intense, without ever being too painful. She also used active release techniques to get out some of our deeper knots. I tend to keep a lot of tension in my back, so I try to get in for massages as much as possible. Tara was intuitive and seemed to work a lot with pressure points. The energy in the beginning of the massage felt calm but intense; kind of like forming the intention of creating the space as a healing space. For about 10-20 minutes I was in the "This is nice, but I'm not sure if this is the style for me" space. About halfway through my hour, however, I realized that I had gotten into the state where I'm possibly asleep but feel more like I'm just so relaxed that I'm conscious but only coherent every once in a while. That tends to mean that I am VERY relaxed, and... well... I kind of love that. My back felt wonderful when I left, and the only soreness I experienced was from where she had worked on my chest (and that's just because it's very tight and I don't think it's gotten enough attention in the past). Tara recommended a stretch that should help loosen that up. I felt like my way home was something of a spiritual experience.
