Made many trips to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, but most recently went for a Saturday afternoon hike. Serving many purposes it is a nice park, but is in need of some improvements and maintenance. Quality: Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is a nice park that has a little bit of everything. Split into three separate sections, each plays a different roll. The eastern section has a fun hiking trail around Willow Lake, as long as you are okay with getting muddy. The central area is full of large open spaces, perfect for events and barbecues, as well as for some water fun. The final section is home to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Queens Zoo, Queens Museum, the Unisphere, remnants of the 1939 World's Fair, and a bunch of soccer fields. The three are connected via bike and running trails, though they are frequently flooded and caked in mud. Quantity: A large park that spans nearly 900 acres. Value: Free to visit and use the park. Some attractions have fees, such as the museum, zoo, and water activities. Ambiance: Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is located in the center of Queens, very close to LGA. For locals it is a place for sunny day barbecues. For visitors it is a place to experience some history. It also hosts major events like the U.S. Open, and is steps away from Citi Field. The underrated aspect of the park is the authentic hiking trail around Willow Lake, which will have you jumping across logs and potentially getting lost in the brush. It is just unfortunate that the drainage is so poor across the park and it is not well taken care of. Crowd: The middle section is the only area that tends to get busy. It is great for summer barbecues and events, so crowds will build around the stationary grills. The monument area and the hiking trail are usually empty other than during organized sporting events. Service: Not a very well maintained park. Garbage tends to be scattered throughout all three sections. And the flooding of paths, even when it has not rained for days is concerning. I'd like to say I've spent my childhood days at this park, but I'd be lying if I said I did. In fact, as a Queensite who lives a mere number of stops away, I have only been here no more than 5 times (maybe less). Hotties like Maria Sharapova, Anna Kournikova, Andy Roddick (and Serena Williams?) have dominated the US Open, which is one of the main reasons people know of this park--plus Iron Man 2 (if you noticed). Otherwise, it's a nice, quiet park, smack dab in the middle of Queens and Van Wyck Expwy. You can easily do a 5K or even a 10K because it's so spacious and the scenery trails certainly make great runs. Unless you live nearby or coming for an event, it is not quite Central Park-scenery, but at least the huge, transparent globe marks and represents the significance of Queens: diversity. Although it's a nice park to stroll through, I don't suggest hanging around at night, given the area surrounding it. Check out the small zoo and Hall of Science on your way out! read more

Ah Flushing Meadows Park - I haven't been here in years - except maybe to drive through it on the way to parking at Shea stadium. Having the opportunity to go to the U.S. Open last night, we got there early and since it was a nice night we all walked over to the tennis stadium through the park. I had forgotten just how big the park is and how magnificent that Globe fountain can be - especially at night when it is all lit up. The park has been cleaned up a lot from what I remember from years back and there are a lot of new facilities there that were much needed. I intend to go back to spend the day and check out everything there is there. read more

This park is massive! I recently visited with my family to visit the small zoo located in the park and I definitely miss living across the street from this park. The park is massive in size and makes for a great bike ride. In the summer months they have South American festivities (e.g. Colombian, Ecuador, etc) where vendors and music is placed in the park for visitors. When there are no events at this park it just makes for a nice walk and while I don't recommend walking through at night (not that I find it bad) they do have good lighting at night. read more

It's a large park that houses the famous world's fair unisphere and were the grounds for the worlds fair. I made my way out here my first summer in New York to explore and to have an up-close look at the unisphere which I had seen from far distance. It was a great experience and I have been coming here ever since. The park is very big, what I like the most is all the open green spaces, not all that concrete which you will find in some smaller parks. Come here to play football, skateboard, to jog, bike and much more. Lot of water further into the park. Very calm when I've been here. There is also a zoo here. Come here to experience something different from Central Park or Battery Park, it's worth the trip. read more

Queens is my favorite borough in NYC. I want to give this park a higher rating but it's only going to get 3 stars from me. Since there's better, nicer parks in Queens. If you're visiting NYC then this park is definitely a great park to visit for its own reasons. Its not as interesting as Central Park, not as dynamic and not better than Central Park but that's okay. Before I get to the bad or rather what I dislike about this park, I'll get on the good. The Good: This park is pretty during the spring and summer when the leaves are growing, the tree's are blossoming and hints of nature come out to play. Its looks MUCH nicer during these times of year. Even during the fall the park looks rather nice. It also never gets crazy packed like Central Park which is something I really love about parks. I hate when parks are too packed on a daily basis if something big is not going on and this park certainly never gets jammed. Its also pretty spacious, which is great and which is even better if you're into doing some physical activities like biking, skate boarding, playing sports etc. There's a lot of small soccer fields and tennis courts and it seems to mainly cater to the soccer and tennis players. Which makes sense since this park is home to the tennis U.S. Open. There's paddle boating, row boating and a big ass lake to do that in. And you can rent a bike for an hour and ride around the park for 10 an hour each bike. You can always bring your own bike, skate boards, roller blades and all that of course. Speaking of which, there's a nice little skate rink in the park. There's also an indoor Olmpic sized pool, a zoo and of course, the Unisphere! Which I really suggest you see in the summer when the geysers are shooting off. Its great to see the kids play slide and slide right in the sphere while the water is going off. Right across the park is Citi Field stadium if you want to check that place out, if you're into baseball. Let me not forget there's a nice theatre in this park, though I never been inside and a nice miniature golf course. They also hold small little concerts, shows here in the park. Usually of different cultures, since Queens is truly the most diverse city in the U.S. The bad: Its too damn close to all the parkways, highways, roads and surrounded by the them. So, if you're looking for a place to escape the noise of the city, this probably isn't really the place to do so. And some parts of this park can just look straight up ugly since its close to a lot of big box stores and supermarkets and faces the back of them. This might not be much of a bad thing, but this park is more of a sporty park. Not that you can't lay down and just chill on the grass but everyone is playing soccer/futbol, American football, tennis everywhere. Unlike other parks in NYC, there's not many spots to just lay on the grass and chill. Also, you can only do any type of boating during the weekends, which I still is lame but whatever.Also, RUN away from this place during the winter. It looks so dead and ugly!! The ugly: This place is just flat. There's no hills, trail ways, nature walks etc. Maybe some bumps in the road but its a very flat park other than that. On top of that, there seems to always be a lot of geese shit around the park which bugs me. If you want to be romantic, do NOT take the person you're trying to impress here. When it comes down to it, this park is still great in its own right and if you want to explore NYC then its worth a visit. It has its own history which is unique, and the Unisphere is always fun to check out. Its also a great park to do outdoorsy activity and it is a nice park. Its just not beautiful like other parks in NYC ( Forest Park, Prospect Park, Cunningham Park and of course Central Park just to name a few). I find myself coming here a lot to get my sports on and have been coming here for a long time. Good park maybe even great park but its not awesome but its not bad, ya know what I mean? When I think of Queens, a large, unique park isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Well, maybe it does now, especially since there's so much here, including plenty of open space. Of course you have the old World's Fair Observation Towers and the famous Unisphere, which is much bigger than I imagined. But there are also a ton of fields for various sports, playgrounds, walking paths and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (home of the U.S. Open). Citi Field is also right across the street if you want to catch a Mets game. We racked up a couple of miles walking around a large portion of the park, seeing all of the above and just enjoying the nice, Spring day. I'm sure the Summer brings out a ton of people, all ready to enjoy everything the park has to offer. read more

This is the third largest park in NYC and was created for the 1939/1940 New York World's Fair and also hosted the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair. I visit frequently and there are so many activities and things to do at this park. Everyone knows that the US Open is held here at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center but bet you didn't know It's open to the public throughout the year, offering three stadium, 22 outdoor and nine indoor courts. Shea Stadium is at the north end of the park. The park has two lakes with boat rentals, bicycling paths, recreational playing fields and playgrounds (the Playground for All Children, is one of the first playgrounds designed to incorporate normal and handicap-accessible activities), there's a zoo and children's petting zoo, Queens Theater in the Park, the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Museum of Art, Terrace on the Park banquet and catering facility, and an indoor ice skating rink. The New York State Pavilion, constructed as the state's exhibit hall for the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair, is still standing but not being used, the Unisphere was built as the theme symbol for the 1964/1965 World's Fair and is still standing. Most of the other buildings from the Fair have been demolished. Scenes from the movies Men in Black, and "The Wiz" were filmed at the park and in 2001, the show The Amazing Race used the park as the final destination of the first season. Getting to the park is easy with the delightful 7 Train to the Willets Point/Shea Stadium station, also catch the 7 at 74th Street Broadway/Roosevelt Avenue and at Queensboro Plaza. Another option is the Long Island Rail Road which stops at Shea Stadium via the Port Washington line. My Queens folk might kill me for giving Flushing Meadows Corona Park a mere 3-star review but check it out yo. People compare Brooklyn to Queens all the time and I'm going to dare say Brooklyn rules. Food/ Restaurants aside, I'm going to simply say there is more to do in Brooklyn and comparing the major parks is another way to explain it. The Brooklyn Museum in Prospect Park is better than Queens Museum of Art. (I live a few blocks from it and I work at QMA). There's a beautiful library in Brooklyn and a Botanical Garden. Queens got a Tennis Stadium that supports funding for the park once a year. Queens also has a larger lake to support the annual Dragon Boat Race. Brooklyn's got hiking trails and more white people. Queens got Hispanics and food carts. read more

Lovely and spacious park in the heart of queens to host the Hong Kong's Dragon Boat Festival in NYC. This year's race/festival was on the weekend of 8/9/14 and 8/10/14. This is my second year going to this event to support my colleagues at JPMorgan and close friends at Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Bank of NY, and Sin Tao. It's truly a remarkable weekend filled with good food, lots of free perks from some of the well known vendors, fun games, excellent life music, and an awesome way to have family time. We had one 75 degree day in March and we bet your bottom dollar I was taking advantage of it. We decided to drop by Tozt and pick up some dinner for a picnic in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Parking was very easy to find and we entered the park from the College Point entrance. There were families, couples and kids all over the park. Walking hand in hand and playing on the swing sets and jungle gyms. I encountered a very friendly squirrel who happily eat the cone part of my ice cream cone directly out of my hand. We spent a lot of time sitting around the Unisphere that was built for the worlds fair back in the 1940's. People we riding bikes, rollerblading, skateboarding and running in the area. Also a lot of people sitting on benches and enjoying the scenery. There are a bunch of soccer fields to for games and practice. Also a couple basketball hoops but soccer was by far the popular sport to be playing in the park. I can't wait for summer to come so I can spend many more days people watching, eating and walking about the park. read more

Walked through a portion of the park this past Sunday, stopped in at the indoor pool and ice skating center. Walked through the fields of various soccer tournaments going on at the time, and visited the museum. There were lots of bike riders, skate boarders, and families picnicking. Grounds were well maintained. It was nice to see the pavilion and unisphere in person from the movie Men In Black. This park was home of the world fair, the pavilion area is worn and rusted since is was last used in 1964, definitely a park worth taking a stroll through. Yes there are other, smaller globe imitations-but come here for the real deal! It's a bit of a trek from the subway, but it can be a beautiful stroll through the park on a warm, sunny day. A great park with fields for outdoor sports. My son participated in the free soccer clinic sponsored by DV7 and Assemblyman F. Moya. The children all got a quality soccer lesson, a free shirt, took pictures with soccer champ David Villa and got to interact with boys and girls who love the sport. The facilities and staff at fields 8 and 9 were friendly and very helpful , restrooms very clean (Yay, parks dept.). The only reason why this didn't get a perfect score is the lack of shade! Great park for family reunions and picnics jogging biking or a long walk (my personal favorite). There's a weird space war that occurs here for those that are looking to have a picnic/BBQ during summer weekends. I've been seeing folks using yellow construction tape to "claim" their area . I was recently was a part of a family reunion here and many people had trouble finding the designated area as the entrance can be confusing for those that are unfamiliar with the park. The fact that the park is huge only add to confusion for those that are traveling by taxi as the taxi driver may only be familiar with one entrance and there are many different entrances. My favorite thing about this park is all the amenities. There is seasonal bike rental starting from 15 dollars. There's also seasonal kayaking available. Long story short I love this park the globe is the added plus Ps pro goer and NYC parks and recreation should keep this park cleaner it's way too beautiful. read more

I have been wanting to visit this park ever since I was little - once I saw the unisphere on the King of Queens, I was sold. I finally got to go recently and it was everything I was hoping for! The unisphere made for some great photos. I loved the fountains and it's a great way for kids (or your pup....or you) to cool off on a hot summer day. The park itself is beautiful. I enjoyed walking around and exploring. I also saw a lot of people having little parties/picnics there, which is a great idea! I have no idea what everyone else is praising about this park. Unlike Central Park and Prospect Park, Flushing Meadows Park has no "Friends of the Park" organization to raise money and take care of the park. And the park is in very poor condition. Drainage in the park is terrible - much of the park floods after any rain. The roots of trees have broken through the roads. In spite of (ugly) trash barrels about every 100 feet, the patrons of this park throw their trash on the ground and especially on Mondays, the park is filthy. In the southern section of the park where people picnic, families frequently (illegally) rope off an area for themselves using police tape or reserve parking spaces by putting chairs or cones in them. They also ruin the grass by driving up onto the curb when trying to park. Parties also frequently bring excruciatingly loud sound systems powered by gas generators. None of this should be permitted. Cars are permitted in the park and drivers think they're on a highway when the speed limit inside the park is 15mph. Cars should be banned from most roads within the park, just as they are in Central and Prospect Parks, among others. Half of the water fountains don't work or have so little pressure, they're useless. The vendors are ordinary - there's no attempt to get better quality or more diverse offerings. The only time part of the park looks nice is when flowers are planted near the Unisphere during the U.S. Open. I guess when rich people use the park it has to look nice, but when working class local people use it, no one cares. I don't know how much the government spends on this park, but aside from grass cutting and cleaning up after a weekend, it doesn't seem like much is done, in spite of the large staff facility north of the tennis center, On the up side, it does have a small zoo and children's zoo, a few kiddie rides, the museum, a (polluted) lake where one can rent pedal boats, the Queens Theatre (although rarely open), a relatively new building with a pool and ice-skating rink, a skateboard park and the central Unisphere. But this is not an architected park in the manner of Central or Prospect Park - it's really just what was left over after the 1964 bankrupt World's Fair. read more

I have been to this park twice now. Both times for running events. I don't do 10k yet or 13.1. However both times i'm there there is alot going on. Queens 10k had almost 11,000 runners and families run through the park. I was happy to hear that the 7 train was running into queens from GCT. If the mta knows there is special events going on and there is going to be a stampede of people going to a section of queens or Brooklyn they should add extra trains so that the trains are not crowded by the time it picks people up at other stops. Not Flushings fault but hey. There was groups of people playing soccer. Unfournately after the race the park was empty compared to when we started. They have a little food stand near the stadium entrance. The LIRR has a train stop right there, i guess for met games. Citifield is right there when you get off at Mets-Willets station. I didn't have time to walk around this time as i was going to the mermaid parade. Maybe one day i'll go just for the park but i think i'll be there again in november. read more

Do the visitors to this park mistaken it for a landfill? This huge park could so easily be 4 or 5 stars, with all there is to see and do: the Queens Zoo, Botanical Garden, Queens Museum, the Unisphere, the Queens International Night Market(summer) and the cute little amusement park with the best carousel I've ridden. There are huge expanses of green to play in, have bbqs in, etc. But geesh, the garbage strewn all over this park was a shock to me and an eyesore. Queens Sis told me it wasn't unusual. You certainly can't blame a lack of garbage cans, because I saw plenty of empty ones around. On a recent visit to the Night Market, this Asian lady had a stack of napkins which were blown to the ground by a wind. Well, she ran to get more instead of picking up all the napkins that were on the grass and never cared to pick up her refuse. Her young son gave me the evil eye because I said his mom was a slob. Sorry kid, but your mom is a jerk. And at least the Market in that part of the park has paid garbage pickers who collected her garbage. Seriously folks, if our Canadian neighbors can keep the well used 1,000 acres of Stanley Park pretty much pristine, we can too. Here are suggestions that don't involve Congress to pass any laws: 1) Get teams of rookie cops or trainees(you want the seasoned pros to fight the serious crime) to patrol and start fining people for littering. Issue tickets right there and collect. Bring portable credit card scanners for litter bugs without cash. At $25 a pop, there should be enough in the kitty in a day to hire garbage pickers. 2) Do public information videos whenever there is an event there. A five minute movie on what garbage cans are for and why you don't want to breed rats might help. 3) Get corporations to volunteer their summer interns for park cleanup(this can be expanded to any other refuse strewn park). 4) Sierra, round up your Queens peeps and do a few sessions of park cleanup preceded by a pot luck(for strength:)). My first and one of my best Yelp outings was a pot luck(with no clean up activity) at Governor's Island hosted by Peter D. and Jane K. I still have my beloved Yelp Tee from that event and will gladly wear it and pitch in if you can do session on a weekday morning. If it isn't too hot to bake, I will even bring some of my famous gut busting scones. Hopefully park planners will take heed and do something. I gave it 3 stars for all it houses. It could be easily be one of the jewels of Queens. Remember, diamonds are sparkly when they are clean and polished. read more

Now, This is our PARK....all of us residents of Queens loves this park....located between Flushing and Corona, its 10 minutes by car from my place. Known once to be a swamp many many years ago, it is now the largest park in Queens. It is 1 1/2 times the size of Manhattan's Central Park. It is so big it hosts the New York Mets at Shea Stadium and the US OPEN Tennis as well as hundred and hundred of daily visitors who comes for picnics, festivals, cricket, soccer, jogging, bicycling, . It has 2 lakes, miniature golf, very very large picnic areas. You can rent bicycle and boats. It is also home to the Queens Museum of Art, NY Hall of Science, Queens Zoo, Queens Botanical Garden and Queens Theatre in the Park. The Worlds fair was held there twice..1940 and 1965. Remnants of which is still visible today, It also houses a restaurant called "Terrace on the Park" which gives you a spectacular view of the city. read more

This is a fun park! I used to run around it when I worked in Flushing for many years. The zoo is fun also. Now I enjoy doing 5k's here. The Globe is beautiful and when the fountain is on, it's gorgeous. The pictures always come out great at the races! read more

Now while the park is nice...it just left me with the "something is missing here" feeling when I visited it over the summer. I am just in love with Brooklyn's Prospect Park, and that may seem like a real low blow coming from a Brooklyn resident that grew up in Queens, but that is just how I feel about this place. Do not visit here when the sun goes down as crime has been on the rise in the park at night. I just feel like this park has so much more potential, but has yet to be given it by the parks department, as in comparison to the aforementioned Prospect Park. read more

Forever known to me as "the park in that was in MIB." A great memory if you ask me. This park is tremendous! The parts I've visited have always had a several activities. They have 2, 4, and 6 seater bikes for reasonable prices. They also have cruiser bikes and paddle boats for rent. The grounds are clean and spacious. Lots of bike paths but an equal amount of grass to lay on and tons of trees for shade. The parking lot is a short walk to the grass in case you need to make a trip back to the car. Many people grill here and it hasn't been overwhelming crowded where you feel like people are on top of you. There's a small store right next to the rental hut which has drinks, snacks and ice cream but only takes cash! The bathrooms are far and need a huge Clorox overhaul. read more

Great park, but be careful if you plan on taking your dog there on a Monday morning after a warm weekend. This place will be littered with trash from the BBQs and picnics that go on during the weekend....and I mean LITTERED. Don't bring your dogs here unless you want them to choke on old chicken bones or random pieces of candy. I don't understand why it is so hard for people to understand that garbage goes into garbage cans. Some people just don't have common courtesy, and it basically ruins this park for the rest of us. The park maintenance does its best but even they cannot keep up with the enormous amount of trash on the ground. Also be careful of coming here after it rains...this place turns into a giant muddy swamp. read more

I grew up in this park. I skated in this park way before they built the skate rink. Awesome place, so much history. Here's why this park is awesome: - They host the Colombian festival every summer. - The Queens zoo is no Bronx Zoo but pretty cool for a small local zoo. - Kids love the carousel - You can barbecue almost anywhere. - There's enough space to practice any sport. - Even after 50 years the unisphere is still a cool structure, and a symbol of pride for Queens residents. read more
