I don't mean the annual McRib Farewell Tour, either. No official word yet on when to expect that molded meatloaf of melancholy to return. It's time for the 2014 Atlanta Film Festival. The 2013 Festival ran for 10 days or so in March. Various ticket options were offered, and as I was still "technically" in grad school, if not actively enrolled, and I was still carrying my student ID in my wallet, I went for the $75 student pass (not that I was ever asked to verify my status as a student when I purchased or fetched my pass). This pass granted me access to all films and other assorted shindigs associated with the Festival - EXCEPT for the opening and closing features, for which I'd need to purchase separate passes either in advance for a high-but-not-too-unreasonable price, or during the festival, at the ludicrous cost of $30 each. I skipped both of those features (the Matthew McConaughey film, "Mud", and the teen-romance drama, "The Spectacular Now"). The Festival was split between The Plaza Theatre (http://www.yelp.com/biz/plaza-theatre-atlanta-2#hrid:wZ_JAtW55KEt41051Rg11w) on Ponce and 7 Stages (http://www.yelp.com/biz/7-stages-atlanta) at L5P, and I split my time roughly equally between the two to see most of what I'd wanted to see. I viewed more than a dozen feature-length films and many more shorts, ranging from abysmal to awesome, dull to hilarious, hackneyed to cutting-edge, family-friendly to explicit, moronic to profound. A sponsor, Stella Artois was free everywhere I turned. As for the other events presented to Festival-goers, there was an AYCE Buffalo wing night at the Highland Inn, a short walking distance from the Plaza, in honor of the documentary "The Great Chicken Wing Hunt", whose filmmakers were in attendance for much of the Festival. The wings, catered by JR Cricket's and others, certainly won't be appearing in any future docs about great wings, but it was a fun event that gave me the chance to devour a couple dozen wings with some of the folks from Doobious, a non-profit group of local riffraff who were ubiquitous during the Festival, snapping photos and shooting video. Another event was a Drivin' 'N' Cryin' performance, celebrating the screening of a documentary about the band. I didn't get to attend, but it was a cool addition, despite the fact that you can't walk a couple of blocks in Atlanta without tripping over a thirty-something redneck hippie and stumbling into a DNC or Kevn Kinney show. My favorite event was a blend of food trucks, visual arts and music at The Goat Farm, where several local bands such as Tikka and PLS PLS played. I noticed that many of attendees were most excited to meet the C- and D-list celebrities who attended, as well as to discuss the art with the up-and-coming filmmakers who were there to present their works, and yeah, that was pretty cool. I spoke for a while with the director of "A River Changes Course" - a terrific documentary about environmental and cultural change triggered by industrialization in Cambodia - and also with Luis Mandoki, whose American movies have always dredged the bottom of the barrel, but whose festival entry, "La vida precoz y breve de Sabina Rivas", was a fine film, and who would surely have won the festival's Robert Plant lookalike contest, if there were one. Thanks to the confounding nature of transportation between the Plaza and 7 Stages, I found myself in a minivan with a couple of sci-fi filmmakers working out of my home state and a middle-aged driver hoping for his big break into the industry as an actor. As it turns out, no, I should not have been permitted to take the shuttle between venues. Perhaps the organizers will do better in 2014 to make such details more clear. I told the others in the van that I was John Mayer, which earned a fist-bump from the guys and a hard-yet-lustful face-slap from the girl. Something I wish had been different in 2013 was that none of the educational workshops were offered at times I could have attended without taking off from my 8-5 job. Some of these workshops looked quite intriguing. So far, it seems the organizers are doing a better job with planning and communication. The ticket-buying process was certainly less obfuscating (http://atlantafilmfestival.com/2014-tickets-passes/). My All-Access pass gets me 10 additional passes to bring friends. Or enemies. Depends on my mood that day. If you want only to see a movie here or there, tickets are $10 each. Something I like about the pass is that it also buys membership into the ATLFF organization, which hosts screenings and other opportunities throughout the year. I think the group needs work and perhaps better leadership, because it feels like a struggling new festival and not one that is in its fourth decade, but this event is certainly not one to be missed by any film lover.

After living in Atlanta for 28 years, this is our first year attending the Atlanta Film Festival…read more It is hard to believe that this festival has been around for 43 years because they are rather unorganized. But, the biggest problem, and the biggest thing we learned this year, is NOT to buy a film badge! You are better off buying individual tickets. We went to a movie on Sunday night with our film badges for which we paid over $200, and they turned us away 15 minutes before the movie and allowed people who bought $10 movie tickets into the theater instead of us! We COULD NOT BELIEVE it. It is clear that their loyalties lie with the $10 ticket buyer and not the $200 badge buyer, and that is unbelievable! We will never buy a badge again. I wonder if the organizers understand the irony of their misplaced priority on the $10 people over their true movie fans who spend hundreds of dollars buying a film badge?? If they keep running like this, they will have $10 to collect instead of hundred dollars from a badge purchase. Crazy.

An awesome event on the Main Streets of Tucker, GA on the Tucker Day. It was a great fun, yummy…read morefood, Live music, Arts and Crafts, kid's activities, and parade. It happened on September 4, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It was like a celebration on Main Street. Starting with the human-powered parade down Main Street at 9 a.m., followed with a full day of fun, food, live music, arts and crafts, kids' activities and booths with local businesses. https://www.tuckerday.com/ for a full schedule and details on sponsorships and booth space. The long running street festival started in 1957 and has run every year since except 2020 when it was sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic. The day featured a "human powered" parade with first responders as grand marshals, an arts and craft market, food vendors, three stages of live music and a Kid's Zone. Organizers say Tucker Day will be moving back to its traditional month, May, in 2022. I watched the parade as it makes its way down Main Street, watched the Tucker High School Marching Band performs along the parade route, children from The D.R.E.A.M. Center dance studio walk in the parade, I checked out the pop-up alley off Main Street, and watched the First responders acted as grand marshals during the Tucker Day 2021 parade. I believe it was DJ Chino (Luis) who emceed and played the music and DJ Tica (Marilyn) who operated the photo booth. They did a great job. I appreciated that DJ Chino wasn't overbearing and the music wasn't too loud. The photo booth was fairly standard, but we got some great photos - both high-res digital and fun physical photo strips with the event logo. Thanks, guys.

The vibe is always positive, fun and uplifting. I look forward to this every year like Christmas. My daughter and I are from different generations but we ALWAYS can go together because they literally have something for all music taste. I like Neo-Soul, R&B, and some rap. She likes all that new rap lol. I have fallen in love with some of those new artists music too though. The price is always reasonable for all that you get to see and do. Toyota is always a big sponsor and they always give out some cool ass shirts and stuff. This is one positive thing I love about living in the A- being front and center here each year. I love to people watch for the latest fashions in the A and a good laugh too bc some people dress a mess! I hope they keep this at Piedmont Park or Centennial because it was effortless getting from stage to stage. Just all around love this event and will always come!!!

(3.5-4 stars) My ONE Music Fest 2025 Experience…read more This was my first time attending ONE Music Fest, and while it was an adventure for sure, I have a lot to say! Let's start with getting there -- whew! Arriving was stressful. I highly recommend taking an Uber because parking and traffic were a nightmare, and honestly, I don't feel as comfortable with the Metro anymore now that I'm older. Once we got there, the real wait began... I was in line for about an hour and a half, and it was a whole situation. Fights were breaking out, people were frustrated, workers looked like they were ready to clock out instead of checking people in. It just wasn't organized, and for the amount of money people spent, there definitely needs to be a better entry process next year. Once they finally fixed my ticket issue (thankfully the staff that did help were kind and professional), we made it through a shorter line -- and then the fun finally started! The setup overall was nice, but I do think the One Music vendor area was way too close to the first stage. The sound clashed and made it hard to enjoy the artists performing there. Stage 2 definitely needs some work next year too -- the audio crew wasn't on point at all. I could barely hear most of the performances. But listen... the Island Vendor Stage? They were the highlight for me! The energy, the crowd, the music -- it was giving good vibes all day. They really kept the party going and saved the experience for me. Leaving was much smoother -- we grabbed food, enjoyed the walk out, and honestly it ended on a positive note. The traffic outside Atlanta though? Let's just say I had to hop out and direct the car myself because it was that bad All in all, depending on the lineup next year, I might consider coming back. This was my first time celebrating my birthday at ONE Music Fest, and even with the chaos, it was still worth the experience and the money spent.

My good friend Mario Schambon introduced me to this place about eight hours ago. He had sound people playing. The photographer Linda Costa was doing some fly lighting portraits of all of us. I got out my fabric and we put on a show for each other. After the drunk activities wore off we watched a documentary of the exhibiting artist Brent Houzenga directed by Kristian Day. The woman who owns it lives there and is completely hysterical. We pretty much spent the entire night laughing. Will post photo's soon. When you decide to go, bring your friends along for the ride.

I attended the 2016 Atlanta Maker Faire which took place in downtown Decatur on Saturday and…read moreSunday, October 1 and 2, 2016. This was a small festival where local artists, craftspeople, engineers, builders, hobbyists, and other enthusiasts showed off their wares and various projects. There was no telling what you might see. Maker Faires take place all over the world and are the creation of an American magazine called Make. The first Maker Faire took place in the Bay Area in 2006 and the first in Atlanta, a "Mini" Maker Faire, took place at Georgia Tech in 2011. The full Atlanta Maker Faire started in Decatur in 2014. I thought this event was OK. I like the idea behind it and what it stands for, promoting everything from arts and crafts to science and technology. This is a great place for kids to explore and learn. Best of all, it's free. From a personal enjoyment level, I was more indifferent. The event has a low budget, indie, amateurish feel to it. All of the "makers" (vendors/exhibitors) and volunteers I encountered were friendly. Maker Faire sort of reminded me of what you might see at Dragon Con such as the dealers rooms, artists alley, and robotics exhibitions/competitions, but on a much smaller scale. It also reminded me of some aspects of the Georgia Renaissance Festival with medieval/Renaissance-themed makers such as glassblowers and blacksmiths. Like the Georgia Renaissance Festival, the Atlanta Maker Faire took place outdoors. This year, it was set up in two areas: the Decatur High School football field and the green space located catty-corner to it. Most of the makers were set up underneath canopies. Here's a sampling of random stuff I saw: - Drone races - Glassblowing - Blacksmiths (one blacksmith sold $1 mini swords made out of nails) - Airplane and helicopter prototypes - Robot "sports" matches - A man printing free 3D box figurines using photographs taken of your head - Ham radio canopy with an old school teletype machine that can communicate with modern smartphones - R2D2 - Chickens Companies like Barnes & Noble and schools like Georgia Tech also had canopies. Several food trucks and porta potties were on-site. I believe most of the attendees who drove to the event parked in the DeKalb County courthouse parking deck located at the corner of W Trinity Pl and Commerce Dr. This deck cost $6 flat-rate. I found free parking about a couple blocks east near E College Ave and we just walked over.
