On the way to ATL we side tracked to My Parents' Basement in Avondale Estates. Wow it was a big detour, but also a very interesting stop. This is a community gathering place with pinball machines and a museum or library of old and new comics centered on Superman being the hero. Certainly the bar is a draw and the food menu is vegan friendly. The hush puppies are a treat for everyone to share and the kale and house salads are well liked. An other shareable appetizer was the tortilla chips and a creamy queso. The Smash Burger was a delight without all the greens and a rootbeer that bore the same name...Smash Burger Beer. However, the best was the tater tots that came with three deep fried? Chicken Fingers on the plate. Service was fine and efficient. Wash up and be astounded by the restrooms scenery before you leave. My Parents' Basement is located next door to Purple Corkscrew and City Dog Market. This clever on words business is a barcade with pinball machines ($1 each) and arcade games. Some of the arcade games are free to play (such as X-Man, Pac- Man and Street Fighter). There are also quite a lot of comics (both used and new available for purchase) and random comic and scifi related paraphernalia for sale (such as Funko pop characters and other collectables). My Parents' Basement also is a restaurant with dog friendly outdoor patio seating. My husband and I decided to visit this business this afternoon, around 11:30 am. After parking right out front, we were greeted by 2 employees upon entering. Being that this was a week day, late morning, the place was pretty dead. There was only one table of 2 outside eating and one person playing an arcade game. Later on when we left, only another person came in to play video games. We ended up playing a few (free) arcade games and then eventually left. I do like the concept of this business and think it would definitely be a fun place to come to with friends. And I think it would be more fun if there was a larger crowd (which I can only imagine would be busier on weekends). If I lived in this area, I would come back to check them out again. read more

I'm always so excited when I find an establishment that has a niche, nerdy atmosphere. This was one of the first places I visited after moving to Atlanta, and I've come here quite often since then. The atmosphere is adorable and geeky, the servers are friendly and welcoming, and I was so surprised with how good my Caesar salad was. What an amazing low key place. Was here on a Sunday for a vegetarian/vegan brunch meetup. Unfortunately, their vegan entrees (I'm not vegan or vegetarian but my wife is and I enjoy a lot of plant-based food) were not gluten free, so I got their frittata with a side of vegetarian sausage (which I don't think was gluten free but I forgot to ask). I expected to be disappointed by a plain breakfast, but this was really good. Also got a side of tater tots and the meal was actually memorable. Everything was delicious. They also had oat milk for our coffee which was very surprising. This is a comic book and video game parlor with a full bar and a dog friendly outdoor patio. It was cooler and rainy this days so they had the patio enclosed with two roaring gas fireplaces, but dogs were still welcome. Add the free WiFi and I think I'll come here with my pup and get some work done one day and then play some pinball. Service was very good. It's order at the bar and they bring you the food kind of thing, but everyone was friendly, coffee refills were easy, and the brunch was very pleasant. Definitely be back. read more

Love this place! So, being from Austin it's hard to find any pinball spot that can top Pinballz. So, when traveling, I try to find cool spots with machines and this is prolly the best place in Atlanta (near Atlanta?). It has pinball, arcade games, COMIC BOOKS, a kitchen and full bar. Also also also, glancing at their cork board they have pinball tourney's, art nights, etc. Staff was incredible. We had a slight issue with our meal that our server was quick to address and unbeknownst to us, they took one of our drinks of our tab. Our bbq burger was tasty and the tots were perfect. Also, they have a wide selection of local and non-local beers. They have about 12-14 pinball machines, including some of my favs; Godzilla, Batman n Robin (the old tv show themed one), and foo fighters. I believe they have a list of their machines online. They've committed to removing the Harry Potter pinball machine and showed that they're willing to listen, grow, and stand by their community. It means so much to see a space not just say they're inclusive, but actually live it. I seriously appreciate it and can't wait to be back. Original: I've been a huge fan of My Parents' Basement for a long time. The food is incredible, the beer list is excellent, the pinball lineup is (usually) fantastic, and the whole vibe is such a great haven for nerdy folks like me. It's one of the few places where I've genuinely felt at home -- where I believed I could show up fully as myself. That's why this hurts so much to write. MPB proudly positions itself as an inclusive, safe space -- "All Are Welcome" is literally part of the mural on the wall. But recently, they installed a Harry Potter pinball machine, and as a trans person, this felt like a deep betrayal. The creator of that franchise continues to use the wealth and platform built by those products to actively harm trans people. Every sale, every license, every new machine feeds into that system. This isn't a theoretical harm -- this is material. It funds the people working to take away our rights and our safety. It's hard to describe the heartbreak of walking into what's supposed to be a safe space and seeing that machine. It sends a message, whether intentionally or not, that some of us don't matter as much when profit or popularity are on the line. I'm sharing this not to tear MPB down -- I love this place, and I want to believe in it. I want to believe that they care about the safety and dignity of all their patrons, not just in words but in action. I hope they'll reconsider this decision. I genuinely hope they'll listen. We go here 2-3 times a week and just love it here. Everyone is so friendly and the food is so well prepared that you'll think you're at some nice gastropub. I swear this place gets better with every visit. This time around I brought a friend from our home country of Trinidad and he spent the first few minutes walking around with his eyes bugging out and his hand over his mouth. He definitely found his nirvana. I got a German beer equivalent of a Blue Moon on tap and it was excellent and wandered a bit while he chit-chatted with everyone. It's such a great space with comics and comic themed stuff like pinball machines, arcade consoles (X-Men, hell yeah) and posters everywhere. The staff are really nice and super chill too. Alex was our server and she was great. The food really surprised me with how simple and good it was. My buddy had nachos and a burger and was really happy with both. My appetizer was the Hush Puppies with Remoulade; that sauce kicked it up to a whole other level. So so good. My entrée was the Cashew Butter Bacon and Jelly Sandwich with a side of Mashed Potatoes. While in Atlanta, we were looking for something fun and unusual, and came upon this place. What a fun evening. We started out with some food which we were pleasantly surprised was quite good. And a great environment sitting out on the porch. I got the pimento cheese grilled sandwich and she tried to chicken tenders. For quick bites they do a very good job with their food. My Parent's Basement is a go-to social destination for locals, and video game/ comic book fans ITP. It's the first place we met an old friend who has a career in film/TV special effects: his pick. You place your order at the counter, and they bring it to your table: nothing is more perfect for meeting up with group. No tedious check splitting needed. Very popular restaurant- and for good reason: there's something for everyone. Even if you just want to house kettle chips and beer. It's worth noting that their salads are delicious: the house with cashews, green apple & blue cheese is so satisfying that I have yet to try the other two choices (spinach, goat cheese, pickled red onion) and a Caesar with tomato (my kind of heaven). If you love salads, you know that they can go very wrong in a "bar food" setting- either anemic, dodgy bowls of wilt with plastic packet dressing - or "salads" that are so full of meat, cheese, novelty fried things that they are clearly designed for someone for whom "salad" = punishment. They have a good range of vegan and vegetarian options ( as well as gluten free). Check out their daily specials: they usually have a vegan option, & it is RELIABLY good. Like, I just went to a friend's house and they prepared something special & delicious for me from scratch- that good. (it almost pains me to give this tip because the regulars *know* the specials- all of them- are great, so they often sell out.) Stand outs: the Shay fish filet sandwich, tater tots, the vegan jalapeño hush puppies with remoulade, vegan tofu curry - and their burgers are also good. The vegan gyro was disappointing, but sine there is such an abundance of options, not a big deal. Beer, cider and mixed drink selections are solid, and reasonably priced. Serve yourself water makes everything very chill- please be aware, the waiters are busy, and the kitchen can get slammed, so relax!! Most seating is inside, two stone fireplaces keep it cozy in the winter. Lots of pinball machines & arcade games inside, along with a bar, and a comic shop. A good place to come solo - or meet friends. Great neighborhood vibe. We spent all afternoon there and didn't even end up getting food which we had planned on - we were having such a great time playing pinball, shopping comics and just hanging out at the bar. I had really been looking forward to some of the vegan options on the menu, but I guess we'll just have to make it back someday! This place is totally chill and exactly what you'd want it to be for a hang out spot. On the one hand $1 a play is a bit stiff but it was nice to not have to worry about stuffing your pockets with quarters and just using dollar bills in the machines. So one of my good friends today said do you want to visit "My Parents Basement" ? and I am like what??? Why the heck would I want to visit your parent's basement? No, it is a cool restaurant with awesome pinball machines and other games... Ohhh okay... We stopped on by, this place is awesome for anyone who is a 1980's or below. I worked as a bartender and never was a big fan of televisions, but, almost every single bar one could ever visit is full of televisions. It keeps patrons sipping on their drinks and keeps them there for hours watching television. My Parents' Basement does not have any televisions in their bar, which means if you visit, you will be talking to the bartender or strangers next to you, how amazing is that? I love deep conversations... The waiting staff was very friendly and overall the food was good and is priced well. Everyone at our table enjoyed all of their food, even the kids. They have really cool retro art, comic figures, pinball machines ($1 per play, or $2 for 3 plays) and a few older games that are free to play. For comic readers, they have tons of retro comics that are only $1 each (these are like 20-30 years old and in mint condition). If you are in the area, definitely come check these guys out.
