The International Civil Rights Center & Museum is located in the heart of Downtown Greensboro. It…read moreopened in 2010. The museum offers guided, self-guided, and virtual tours if you can't make it to Greensboro. I've done the guided tours and the self-guided tours. With the guided tour, you are provided with background information as you go through, and directed to specific things in each gallery. With the self-guided tours, you start with a video overview of what you will see in each gallery, then you go through the museum at your own pace. One tour isn't better than the other; it just depends on what you prefer. This museum is special in that it is located inside the 1929 F.W. Woolworth building, where the 1960 sit-ins at the lunch counter began. The L-shape lunch counter and the 69 stools remain where they were in 1960. This is where you first enter the galleries. Standing in front of the lunch counter where history was changed is unforgettable. The late Phil Freelon and his firm, the Freelon Group, handled the historic renovation and turned the building into a museum. Eisterhold Associates designed the interactive exhibits. The renovation and preservation made sure that many of the 1929 features remained. From the terrazzo floors to the plaster coffered ceilings. to the lunch counter, to the original stools, to the art deco stairway, to the basement, to the exterior red and gold Woolworth sign. The original dorm furniture is located in the basement. It was the planning room for the NC A&T students. The Hall of Shame is also located in the basement. It is very graphic and difficult to view, but it is so important to see these images, as you will never forget them. Segregated Greensboro shows the segregated signs and vending machines, advertising and The Green Book. The churches played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement, as this is where they planned. Freedom Songs helped build courage before protests. There are interactive exhibits, and you can try a literacy test to suppress voting. The museum shifts from the dark side to successes. You will see mugshots of 1,200 peaceful protestors. Most of these are from other protests after the sit-ins, paying tribute to those who fought for equality. You can read about the legal triumphs after the sit-ins. After reading about other protests in the country, make sure to read through some of the names on the Wall of Remembrance, especially those you haven't heard about before. The last gallery has many black-and-white, tile-sized photos that form a mosaic of President Obama. They represent the power of community. It is a reminder that everyday people can bring change. Photography is not allowed in the museum galleries because much of the content is copyrighted. I take a lot of photos, so this was initially a challenge. But after a while, I just got so immersed in the exhibits.

Spend the money to have good custom blinds and blackout curtains installed. Give up the free cookies, wine/cheese, etc and make the ROOMS COMFORTABLE!!!! Then the tiles in the bathroom stick up ABOVE the grout, so the edges feel sharp and it is NOT COMFORTABLE to stand on - very cheaply done. The elevator buttons were cracked and the #3 button was TAPED ON!!!! Made me worry about the safety of the elevator. Bathroom floors should be smooth, with the tile INSET into the grout. VERY DISAPPOINTED FOR A HISTORIC HOTEL OF AMERICA, we have stayed at many.

Maybe this wouldn't have mattered so much except someone in our group was very familiar with the railroad) But Ned was very personable and you could tell he loved history and as we do too we really enjoyed his tour. The food on the tour was fairly varied and unique to the town (a must!) and it was great to hear the back story of the ownership of the restaurants. (I was a little worried when at the first two restaurants we were served seafood dishes, a seafood bisque and shrimp and grits as one person in our group doesn't really like seafood and I think this is a risky choice for a tour. Also at Chocolate Paper we were given two mediocre Asher chocolates to try instead of some of their more expensive and more delicious Debrands chocolates.) One person in our group thought there wasn't enough food and thought another restaurant or two should be added. I tend to agree when compared to the cost of this tour against other tours I've taken. Had the cost been a little lower I think the amount of food would've been fine. All in all, a great tour though. Ned really was a great guide, I hope he leads more tours, I really learned a lot!

We've come for Thomas the Tank Engine Day for past 3 years. Always so much fun! The kids love riding the big train, although the loud whistle scared the little one this year. But we had noise-canceling headphones, as a just-in-case, so all was well. The kids are still little and really enjoy the activities up at the top. We had a stroller, so took the free shuttle to the top, rather than the skylift. The mine train, gem mining, and the little-kid rides were a big hit. Feeding the animals (goats, llamas, deer, emus) is always super fun, too. Before you enter the animal area, you can buy ice cream cones filled with animal feed ($1 a cone). Once you've handed out all the feed, then you break the cone apart and feed it. We bought 3 cones; could probably have used a 4th. The animals were all very friendly and gentle. Even one of the llamas came over for some feed; they are usually a bit aloof. Look forward to coming back!

The train itself is very loud for little ones, so that's something to keep in mind, but overall the kids loved it and had a good time. We still had a twenty-minute drive to the lodge when we reached the North gate. The drive was pretty, though, and passed quickly. The circular driveway in front of the lodge was clogged with cars, forcing us to park down the road a bit. No one was around to welcome us, and finding someone took us a bit. Once we did, the valets quickly took care of us, and we were checked in. Our room on the second floor overlooked the 18th green and a valley on the backside of the lodge. It was terrific: large and spacious, with lots of wood and chunky lodge-style furnishings. The bathroom was huge, with a large tub, separate shower, and his-and-hers sinks. The minibar came stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and some snacks. While staying here, we enjoyed their astronomy presentation at the top of the silo, walking on several trails through the nearby woods, time in the spa, and making smores out back by the fire pit in the evening with the other guests. There was a special cocktail hour with apps and drinks, and a chance to talk to some of the local providers of food and items to the hotel. They do an excellent job of using local sources for the lodge. Dining was top notch, except at the Stables family-style restaurant. The Stables was a disappointment. Our other meals though in the lodge were top notch. The staff at Primland is the best, and they are what make this place so special. Come visit in the summer and enjoy the cooler temperatures of the mountains.
