We arrived around 5:30pm and spent until about 7pm exploring all the walking paths. There is something here for everyone. There is a huge playground for little ones, there are paths for walkers/runners/dog walkers, and there were even a bunch of people fishing in the lakes. I love how child-friendly this park is. It felt like most of the bridges, benches, and other fun structures were made by girl or boy scouts. There is a huge parking lot so it's easy to drive to this spot. They also have very clean restrooms. We didn't go in to the nature center, but that was pretty too. I liked that this park had a lot to explore. The water was low enough at one section for us to go to a little island in the middle of one lake. While not all the trees have their leaves yet, I image this is even prettier when everything is in bloom. It was a very serene and lovely place to explore.

This place has plenty of parking, lots of playground equipment, and (as the name suggests) three small lakes to walk around. It's worth noting that the main lake (closes to the park entrance) is where fishing is permitted and has the newest/nicest path as well. The middle lake is enjoyable though is a bit rougher. The far lake was damaged in storms in the past so some of it is pretty rough but still enjoyable to explore. I make sure to hit all three lakes every visit, though if you want a nice clean experience, stick to the main lake. The nature center is nice but fair warning: it's pretty small and won't take more than 10-15 minutes to enjoy in its entirety. Still, the staff member there tends to be nice and there are a few small animals in the little displays there. If you want a fun place to walk (especially if you have kids who like playground equipment), this is a great spot to do it. Overall: 5.0 stars ---- Pros: - Beautiful walking spot. - Pleasant staff. - Lots of free parking. - Fun (if small) nature center. - Plenty of playground equipment for kids. You might spot hawks, eagles, or herons. In spring, the path leaving the reservoir is often covered in tiny frogs. They have no self-preservation so watch your step. The park hosts concerts at its amphitheater, including touring acts like Dark Star Orchestra. Snakes are common, especially near water. They're native, and you're trespassing so leave them be. Or text a picture to the VA Snake Hotline (804) 617-7086 to confirm that you don't need to freak out. As for the paw prints in the mud: I've seen them. They look like mountain lion tracks. Officially extinct in Virginia, but the prints say otherwise. Leave no trash. Pack out everything. This place is awesome/wonderful/beautiful!!! Don't mess it up.

My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.

The lake view cabins go very very quickly. Since we are all adult we can appreciate the quiet. Open plan with a lovely fireplace and outdoor fire pit. They provided a bundle of wood - but there is wood for sale at specific hours near the camp store. About the wood..... it's a cross between tree cut and saw mill. I paid $7.00 a bundle. Our cabin had a lovely wrap around porch/deck with both a front and back door. Great view as every room had a window including the bathroom. A slight "ick" factor is that the bed had crumbs. They offer everything you could want minus the linen. Side note I have allergies so be aware that a past guest may have had pets. We used sheets as couch covers. We are planning on staying there again. Standing shower, furnished kitchen. No WiFi. I would come back again but only strictly doing off season as it's much quieter.

We decided to take the scanoe (yes, a scanoe, not a canoe. it's a canoe with a square back) out last weekend and the bf's destination of choice was Deep Bottom Park. It's not the most scenic place in the world, but it fulfilled its purpose for us. There were a few picnic tables, but I'd really only go back to use the boat ramp again. The bathrooms are really nice, though. I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness- clearly someone's on top of the upkeep and it shows. A number of other boats were out on the water while we were there, along with at least one jetskier. We also saw a few people fishing off of the docks, so it seems like this boat launch is probably a fairly popular spot. If you're looking for a place semi-close to downtown, with relatively calm water and a decent boat launch, this park is worth a shot.

The dive ship is stocked with gear and the staff was helpful; the staff runs a tight ship so make sure to watch the safety video! There's a basic bath house with simple showers and places to change. The real delight was the diving area itself!! It was great diving among the friendly fish, underwater basketball court, sunken schoolbus, ship and helicopter wrecks, and helpful training platforms. Parking is just beyond and plentiful. The park offers trails, fishing and boating as well as the separate dog park. Restrooms are located at the trail head by the water. They were extremely dated and no soap in the men's room. There is a water refilling station which is a bonus. I came to hike and there are options on length. There is a 2.9 mile trail, Lookout Tower. You can add two + which is did for a total hike of 5.75. The trail was overall easy with some elevation changes. The challenges were the tree roots. Some of path is nice along the water. Other parts are paved along the road.

The benches on the dock/walkway are metal so if you're planning to sit and hang bring something to lay over the metal before you sit - it may burn your bum!

I can see it being frustrating to find a spot as it gets closer to boating season though. I was not a fan of the boat launch area, it's design was not very user friendly for easily getting into your kayak. You have to step off a ledge into your boat, or use the small muddy area to load and push off. During this crazy time of Covid and politics, our priorities have shifted from dining out…read morefrequently, to attempt a more healthy lifestyle of cooking most meals at home, and seeking out alternative sources of entertainment, ones that permit us to breathe in fresh air, enjoy what nature has to offer, and maintain social distancing. So, after visiting a few terrific Virginia State parks, renting kayaks, we decided that this would be something we would like to do regularly, and purchased our own boats. How many times have you crossed Huguenot bridge and thought, oh neat, look at the people kayaking, what fun? Yea, that has been me for years. So we decided to check out the Huguenot Flatwater put-in area and while it is a challenge, it is doable. By this, I mean, it is CRAZY steep, there is a ramp that the "fit and brave" smaller and experienced kayaker can attempt. For us, we carried our kayaks down the steps and were able to launch from there with relative ease. The main issue we had, was that it got super busy, and it was really noisy with the constant sound of vehicles on the bridge. We paddled down river for a bit but decided to play it safe and head back up river so we could float back and were not fighting the current and didn't get too worn out. When we were about ready to head back in, there were so many people trying to put in, that people were having to wait to get out. And then a bus load from a tour company came and we decided to head over to where a trail end let out on the river, decided it was safe, and we carried our kayaks through the trail and back to our car. Not far. The "coolness" and novelty of urban kayaking wore off within 5 minutes of being in the river. It wasn't peaceful at all, but we did get a decent workout and enjoyed the views. We will definitely continue to seek out different places to kayak, and kudos to those who love the adrenaline of being in that environment. I personally just prefer more quiet and fewer people.
