The boat we will be fishing on is a 21 foot seahunt ultra with a 200 Yamaha on the back. No fishing license required, my boat automatically license everyone who fishes off the boat. I only use fresh bait I catch before your charter begins to give you the highest chance on being successful. My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.

Pocahontas State Park offers over 90 miles of trails, a large lake system, and a well-maintained…read morecampground. Time your hike for lunch at Swift Creek Reservoir. You might spot hawks, eagles, or herons. In spring, the path leaving the reservoir is often covered in tiny frogs. They have no self-preservation so watch your step. The park hosts concerts at its amphitheater, including touring acts like Dark Star Orchestra. Snakes are common, especially near water. They're native, and you're trespassing so leave them be. Or text a picture to the VA Snake Hotline (804) 617-7086 to confirm that you don't need to freak out. As for the paw prints in the mud: I've seen them. They look like mountain lion tracks. Officially extinct in Virginia, but the prints say otherwise. Leave no trash. Pack out everything. This place is awesome/wonderful/beautiful!!! Don't mess it up.

The lake view cabins go very very quickly. Since we are all adult we can appreciate the quiet. Open plan with a lovely fireplace and outdoor fire pit. They provided a bundle of wood - but there is wood for sale at specific hours near the camp store. About the wood..... it's a cross between tree cut and saw mill. I paid $7.00 a bundle. Our cabin had a lovely wrap around porch/deck with both a front and back door. Great view as every room had a window including the bathroom. A slight "ick" factor is that the bed had crumbs. They offer everything you could want minus the linen. Side note I have allergies so be aware that a past guest may have had pets. We used sheets as couch covers. We are planning on staying there again. Standing shower, furnished kitchen. No WiFi. I would come back again but only strictly doing off season as it's much quieter.

There's plenty of spots to picnic, and refreshing views to enjoy. The hiking trails are perfect for admiring creation, and at times you can also enjoy the farm animals! We decided to take the scanoe (yes, a scanoe, not a canoe. it's a canoe with a square back) out last weekend and the bf's destination of choice was Deep Bottom Park. It's not the most scenic place in the world, but it fulfilled its purpose for us. There were a few picnic tables, but I'd really only go back to use the boat ramp again. The bathrooms are really nice, though. I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness- clearly someone's on top of the upkeep and it shows. A number of other boats were out on the water while we were there, along with at least one jetskier. We also saw a few people fishing off of the docks, so it seems like this boat launch is probably a fairly popular spot. If you're looking for a place semi-close to downtown, with relatively calm water and a decent boat launch, this park is worth a shot.

The dive ship is stocked with gear and the staff was helpful; the staff runs a tight ship so make sure to watch the safety video! There's a basic bath house with simple showers and places to change. The real delight was the diving area itself!! It was great diving among the friendly fish, underwater basketball court, sunken schoolbus, ship and helicopter wrecks, and helpful training platforms. A great place to learn to dive!

We went in prepared for not so customer friendly folks and well, we didn't find a single one! Everyone was super friendly and helpful. The hot water facilities are WONDERFUL! It's no luxury shower, it's a camp shower, and does the job. The features underwater are entertaining and make diving in a quarry fun. I mean, basketball with a bowling ball!?!? Loved it! Parking is just beyond and plentiful. The park offers trails, fishing and boating as well as the separate dog park. Restrooms are located at the trail head by the water. They were extremely dated and no soap in the men's room. There is a water refilling station which is a bonus. I came to hike and there are options on length. There is a 2.9 mile trail, Lookout Tower. You can add two + which is did for a total hike of 5.75. The trail was overall easy with some elevation changes. The challenges were the tree roots. Some of path is nice along the water. Other parts are paved along the road.

It's not very large and definitely not your typical park i.e. with tons of seating and a children's play area. This is more of a fishing off the dock and hopping into a boat park. As you enter the you'll notice benches w/ seats - this is such a great area for catching up on your novel. This area will shade you from the scorching sun rays. I enjoyed reading a book and meeting locals. Most people came to fish, run, and for the scenic walk. The benches on the dock/walkway are metal so if you're planning to sit and hang bring something to lay over the metal before you sit - it may burn your bum!

I love that the whole park is sprawled over a marshy creek and there a boardwalk meandering through it. And guess what?? The boardwalk has been extended all the way to the next neighborhood. Now there are two entrances winding around this rustic, reedy park. It's a bird watchers delight... not to mention some other little critters. Today I came on a crisp, cold day to get some fresh air, exercise and then settle on a bench and read, while soaking in nature and and reflect on the constraspects of the current pandemic. Perfect place to gain positive perspective! My favorite park!
