I do keep 96X on my saved stations for when I'm in the cock rock mood. If they happen to be playing music at the time, they usually don't let me down.

Like MTV, I and many other's are asking 96X "Where's the Music?!!!" Every time I tune into this station hoping to hear some Phoenix, B.O.B. or even some Nine Inch Nails all I hear is Mike and Bob. Why is this show interesting/funny again? Two New York guys talk about mundane subjects such as "movies with lines in them" and they run the show for the entire day, with like 5 minutes worth of music every other hour?! What is this? They do some really hysterical segments such as Torture Tuesday, Dirty Work Wednesday and then more random skits and jokes. It is definitely worth checking out this hysterical morning show. As far as the rest of the day goes- I still like the radio deejays that are on throughout the day but the music is terrible. Talk about playing the same song over and over again - with this station that's no joke. I get in my car to go to lunch and song a is on, I get back in my car after lunch to return to work guess what's on the radio? Song a again! Bleh. Stay for the morning show and then make a quick escape.

Anything that's on the top 10 list, is bubblegum pop or already annoyingly ubiquitous will surely be in heavy rotation on this station. With that said, you can always find something to tap a toe or bounce to. Also, compared to some of the other stations, they actually play more music than talking. That's a huge plus for me. Listening to the request lines and the jocks, you'll probably find that this station caters more towards the kids (18 and under) than adults, but there's still some good songs to be heard and some old school jams that pop in every once in a while.

Yesterday, after a doctor appointment in the Fort Norfolk area, we had enough time for some exploration, My friend had grown up in Atlantic City, the neighborhood taken by eminent domain to build Norfolk General Hospital. Relatives lived on some of the streets near Fort Norfolk Medical Plaza. One of the first places we chose to explore was Woodis Avenue. We drove slowly so she could see if there was anything recognizable remaining. Much to my surprise one of the first things I noticed was a door with the 13 News Now / ABC logo on the door. It was only then that I remembered their studios were on Woodis Avenue. The building has a nice urban feel and sits flush with the sidewalk. It's a multi story well kept brick building that speaks well for its Tegna ownership. A parking lot sits directly across the street, possibly for employee use. Having met my husband when we both worked for a Media Group (radio, television & cable) in Atlanta during the late 70's, my theme should be "I brake for television stations." There was plenty of street parking available. So I was able to walk the sidewalks and peruse the difference in technology in the almost 50 years that have passed. How fascinating to see a dish farm & transmission tower located in the small area directly adjacent to the building, which must contain offices & studios. I'm assuming the tower must be to relay signals to its main transmission tower in Driver. The dish farm speaks as much to technological changes as do smart phones & the Internet, which didn't exist in the time period I was in the business. Only cable systems had dishes then. They were humongous and usually just one per head end. I walked the connecting street and saw the remote broadcast vehicles in a nearby parking lot. One more look at the dish farm & tower and it was time to move on. I had walked from 1977 to 2025 on the sidewalks of Woodis Avenue. Thank you WVEC for providing such quality news & programming. If I remember correctly, about 2 weeks ago, you had a story about our energy cost rising after the first of the year. My first thought was to cut the salary of all of those that do not work in the field by 10% and you could cover anything that they are squeezing from us. Please go back and look.

But especially for rap, hip-hop and R&B, the selection is very limited. 103 Jamz is one of the best and longest running rap, hip-hop and R&B stations in the area and I hope it continues its reign. With well known jocks, funny contests and local events 103 Jamz is a staple in the community. As a reggae lover, my radio selection is almost non existent and that's why I have to love 103 Jamz. Every Sunday I tune into Bad Joe and the Caribbean Shakedown and get a touch of the islands I've come to love and miss. Yes, even here the reggae selection is Americanized, static, standard and dated, but it's the best that we get. Reggae, Latin, Soca, and all the rest--they are playing it every Sunday morning until about 2pm. Again, this is like a starter kit for Caribbean and reggae music. It'll get you started, but you're going to have to tune into a local island station to know what's really hot.

He was Director of Broadcast Operations. I was Assistant Controller. My husband's long time mentor, the VP of Radio, left to form his own radio chain. About the time the media group was sold, our friend bought the station that would become The Fox. He offered an equity interest for us to move to Virginia. Since our choice was between Des Moine, IA or Norfolk, VA, it was a no brainer. The transmitter & tower is located in Windsor, just below the line where 100k stations are allowed. Other local stations are only allowed 50k. So the signal is powerful. The studio at that time was in Suffolk and the format country. The call sign was WSKX-FM, Kx106.9 Space was leased in what was then the Holiday Inn Waterside (old Golden Triangle, now Wyndham Garden Norfolk Downtown) . Gutting of the space required a total renovation. I loved getting to do the Interior Decorating. It quickly became evident that the country format had a competitor that would stoop to anything to provide for their continued success. A format & call sign change was planned with a new Program Director & DJ staffing. This began WAFX, 106.9 The Fox. The new format was an immediate success. I'll never forget sitting at the Traffic Computer, before the internet, waiting for the ratings to come through. I was the only person who knew how to pull them. DJ's kept popping their heads in to see if I had answers. Finally.....I did. We were #1 in all our demographic groups. It was a different age of radio then. Cart machines were used instead of computers. Promotions used then would not be allowed by insurance today. Burying a Dj with a breathing hole & hose or freezing one in a block of ice were big attention getters in the late 80's. There were perks. The Fox Mascot came to my son's birthday parties, school & scouting events. Families were needed to participate in large promotions. My young son hung out in the control room, loving to put the carts back into the racks. This didn't go over well with his Dad, who immediately took action. There were near accidents on my street when the first remote van sat in our driveway while being programmed by my husband. But there were also late night calls when power went out in Windsor. My SUV was used to transport diesel fuel during extended outages when the generators were low on fuel. It's not fun when a late night DJ calls at 3am because he spilled coffee into the control board. Hearing a very wide awake "radio voice" asking for my husband made it worse. You're not supposed to sound peppy at 3am.:) It was the best of times. The station was sold at the height of pricing for radio stations. We left radio after so many years because we didn't want to leave Virginia Beach. The world of radio has changed. The old Fox music library now resides, untouched for many years, in my late husband's home lair. The current station owner has studios in Chesapeake. The station is still successful, The format has outlived both my husband & his mentor. And I still keep memorabilia of that glorious time.

The next month, another donation is pulled out of her account. I call for it to be refunded and they say they have no documentation of my call. I then send them the proof of call from my phone bill. They respond with this: "I heard back from the call center supervisor. The shortened story involves two errors. 1. The agent you spoke with misspelled Deborah's last name and created a new acct for her instead of finding the acct from the number you gave. 2. This second error is the really source of the problem. The agent didn't pass the request to cancel the automatic giving on to our team. We have a system set up to take care of requests like this and if the message was passed on, we would have seen the spelling error, fixed it and cancelled to the automatic giving before the next withdrawal. Please accept our deepest apologies, not just for these errors but also for adding stress to a difficult time for you and your family. Once we receive a copy of the death certificate, we will start the refund process." Insisting they need the death certificate. They just want your money- dead or alive. Absolutely disgusting. TRAIN YOUR DAMN EMPLOYEES and stop taking money from deceased people!
