I had a good experience with this bus company. I got my ticket the day before, and it was the standard price for Philly-NYC when purchasing online: $12.99. There was enough space in my 10 am bus on a Tuesday for most people to get their whole row, but I suppose that is highly dependent on the day and time. I found the bus to be clean, and the riders quiet and respectful. They do lose a star because the bus doesn't have any design on it and there's no company supervision/workers by it. Because I had purchased my tickets through Wanda Coach, I couldn't be sure which bus I was supposed to get on, and other passengers had told me this wasn't "the Wanda Coach bus." There were no workers outside the bus taking tickets and supervising the bags in the bottom of the bus. I was definitely uncomfortable leaving my bag out in the open in the middle of the street before the driver closed it up and we left. All in all, however, it was a pretty good deal, and we made it to Chinatown only a few minutes late because of NYC traffic! read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!! My bus was scheduled to leave at 4PM from Philadelphia. Around 4:10PM I went inside and asked the counter what time the bus would actually leave. I was directed to a man who called me the "B" word and told me to "eff off" because I told him his aggressive tone wasn't very customer service like. Forced to take this after YoBus cut their service tremendously... I have no idea how they manage to get back in business. Drivers are reckless. Sure, they get you to your destination in time.. DON'T DO IT! Terrible...Take Megabus, Amtrak, Greyhound/Peter Pan, Uber/Lyft, or just WALK! Never again. Bus was scheduled to leave at 10pm (as advertised when I paid for my ticket online), but ended up leaving one hour later. The weather was bad early today but now at 10pm the weather is much warmer/nicer. The bus has been here parked since we arrived before departure time. The only thing I can guess is that there are only six people standing in line to go from Philly to NYC. I'm guessing they just decided to cancel the 10pm route and put us all on the later/11pm route. Unacceptable. No explanation. No communication. Just leaving us here standing by our bus waiting with no answers. AVOID THIS BUS COMPANY! It's not any cheaper than Megabus and the bus is not as nice, nor is the customer service. Consider ALMOST EVERY REVIEW HERE and just make another choice! An exploitive, dishonest mess of a business model. I've ridden this bus several times in the past out of sheer convenience, and I've quietly endured their urine and cigarette scented buses, lethally irresponsible driving, and hidden fees (they charge extra money for those who booked online tickets), but they've finally crossed the line for me. As other reviewers have already mentioned, purchasing a ticket online for a specific time means nothing, because when you arrive there's a chance the bus will be "full" regardless and you'll be out of luck until the next scheduled time. This ticket cost me $12. Megabus, bolt bus, and greyhound are all comparable. Hell, spend your rainy day fund on an Amtrak ticket. Anything to avoid patronizing this predatory company. read more

Unless your grandmother is dying and this is literally the only way to get to her bedside before she dies, do not take this bus. Actually, if that's the case, ESPECIALLY do not take this bus - just walk or hitchhike or something. Currently, I'm sitting on the side of the road at 11:41PM because our bus is broken down. This is after the bus was late and then stopped twice. It's taken us almost 4 hours to get from NYC to Washington DC and we are still 2 hours away (not counting waiting time for a new bus). As you will see in my other reviews, I never write negative things, but this is just literally the worst, and I've taken chicken buses in Nicaragua. I'm surprised no one reviewed this. To clear some things up...this is basically new century travel. The same location and I assume people and it delivers you to the same New York location. New name for legal purposes? Either way, I was so happy to find out the Chinatown bus was back in operation. After the PA ban on it I was forced to travel from NY to Philly via megabus. I believe the ban was from insurance issues and safety violations like no seat belts and drivers with regular licenses not CDL ones. On megabus the frills of wifi and outlets are nice but I just need to get from point A to B cheaply and alive. Focus/New Century/Chinatown Bus is DUMB cheap always. The occasional 6am on a Thursday ticket on megabus can potentially be cheaper ($6-$8) but I prefer the constant price of $10-$12 and not having to care about scheduling. They travel to NY, DC, VA and MD. They may also do Baltimore and Boston but I'm not sure. You buy your ticket inside or on the actual bus for $10 usually but sometimes it's $12, I guess when it's busy. I don't really bother asking since no matter what I'm getting on. You can use the ticket whenever you want in either direction. I think you have like 6 months to use it which is awesome. Now the cons...it's cheap for a reason. Sometimes, you have to bring your own toilet paper. Sometimes around the holiday you may have to push someone on crutches to get the last seat. Sometimes you have to deal with people yelling at the driver, vice versa or just general noises and smells that aren't agreeable. Bring headphones, a purse that fully closes, patience, backup toilet paper and cash. As a native of Philly you'll be fine with the worn feel here, if not head to megabus or bolt. read more

At one point, the Chinatown buses were the only game in town - the only really inexpensive intercity bus line. They were super successful and had packed buses leaving every hour. Now, with Peter Pan, Greyhound, Mega and Flix usually beating the Chinatown bus fares and in equipment nicer, cleaner, more dependable, Focus, et al., need to up their game. I took Focus for the first time in awhile, was first in line, first on the bus, took the first row behind the door (not behind the driver), which I felt was safest on a bus where masking is not enforced. Seats were not roped off and ticket lady saw us take the first row. After the bus was fully loaded and nearly every seat was taken, she tells us the first row is closed and that we have to move. So much for being in line 30 minutes ahead of everyone else. Needless to say, this line now drops to the bottom of my list. Is anyone reading this at Focus? read more

Avoid at all costs. Take Megabus or Boltbus if you can. I take the bus back and forth from New York every week and this is my bus of last resort. They overbook all buses, so you may be left in the cold with no way to get where you need to go. If there is another bus, they may lie about its time to keep you there and from giving you a refund. Moreover, the buses are old, smelly, and probably safety hazards. They've been shut down numerous times over the years for safety violations by the authorities, but keep popping back up under different LLCs, usually owned by the previous operators cousin/brother/uncle. My last experience taking this bus, the driver and a passenger got in a loud argument in Chinese, resulting in his yelling "get the f*ck off my bus" and kicking her off. I can't imagine another bus operator allowing a bus driver to do this. read more

The address here is correct; couldn't find it on Google maps, but there's an unmissable building for Focus Travel Agency on the east side of the street, across from the parking garage. I bought my ticket from gotobus.com, which had a confirmation number I needed to bring inside to receive my ticket to board. When I got here, I saw a sign that they added a 6:30am line every day. I got here at 6:15 for a 7am bus and don't think it's still scheduled. Boarding the bus is arranged only by proximity to the entrance (i.e. everyone mobs the bus as soon as the doors open); stand further north. The seats aren't hellish, but they're firm. I managed to get on the bus but it's conceivable they oversell. What it's like later in the day, I don't know, but showing up early - like 30+ minutes - makes sense. Only one potential passenger got turned away but she showed up at 7:01 and the bus was full and she hadn't already purchased a ticket. read more

I had a horrible experience with the Focus Bus travel company. My wife and I arrived 6 minutes before departure time and was told that the bus was full. I had bought my ticket over a week in advance and showed up before my departure time. It is extremely unfair that people who buy tickets at the window then and there are prioritized over ones who've bought their ticket in advance. These tickets were purchased in advance because plans and arrangements were made accordingly based on arrival and departure times. It's unfortunate that my wife who is 7 months pregnant had to deal with the stress of unprofessionalism and attitude from a lady at their ticket window when asking for an accurate departure time. Both of the drivers with their unapproachable demeanors weren't help either. When asked the 1st driver said we had to arrive a half hour before departure time whereas the lady at the window stated 15 minutes before. Very misleading and definitively inaccurate. The second driver demanded that we show him a small square paper that was given to us at the desk. I had first showed him my email which clearly states that it was an E ticket. Though it wasn't for the bus currently departing, from my experience all bus company's deal with people who were late or on standby for the next available bus. Had Focus Bus travel been more organized and have a log of people's names or a number system of those who've purchased tickets prior, and have the people who are late or are purchasing on the spot wait on the side in regards to those who made prior cash arrangements with the company similar to Greyhound or Megabus. It is a complete scam to fill their busses and operate on a first come first serve basis not in order of payment. Nowhere on their agreement or website does it say first come first serve. Their departure area isn't the safest either. We are from New York so we're used to homeless and random stuff that happens within the vicinity, but it does not excuse this bus company or their employees to not be mindful of people's personal items and luggage to be left unattended in the open in a sketchy area. There were more than enough workers inside, someone could have stood securing the luggage for 15 minutes. it is completely unfair to my wife and I who scheduled appointments for her pregnancy according to our arrival time. We planned suitably and even prepared against heavy traffic giving us and hour and a half to spare just in case. Had we came late to our scheduled bus departure it would be understandable that we would have to make arrangements for the next bus but we were there 6 minutes before our departure time. So if they are boarding 15 minutes before departure time there was only a 9 minute window that we weren't present for. And the bus we departed on started boarding 10 minutes before and had left 4 minutes late because the driver was conversing with a staff member, someone who should have made himself useful to the paying customers and could have been securing patrons luggage. I will never use Focus Bus Travel again and will be imperatively recommending against it. read more

AND I also intend to make sure several times, maybe even recording it that Focus Travels say exactly what it means to say. But in the mean time, gotobus has told me Focus is supposed to be watched closer on their end. You know who I don't like? People who leave one-star reviews. OK, so the waiter forgot your side of basil aioli and the lighting was "meh" and they ran out of your favorite craft microbrew. I've been making random forays into New York since moving to the East Coast over a year ago. I've tried all the "economy" bus lines -- Focus, Cash World Tours, Yo! Bus, Megabus, probably Bolt at some point. They all have one thing in common: they suck. The Yo! Bus was my favorite for a while because it had a nice balance between the bottom-dollar cheapness of Focus and the illusion of luxury that is Megabus, but then it stopped being a thing. On my last trip to NYC I guess I forgot how truly awful Focus is, so I talked my boyfriend into meeting me in Chinatown and hopping onto one of those classically shady, unmarked white buses. The ride would have been fine except for the loud-mouthed, day-drinking South Philly brohams who seemed only capable of talking about titties and Percocet for two hours. (You get some riff raff on a $12 bus ride, go figure.) But overall, it was fine, whatever. The ride home was another story. First we stopped at the office in NYC to pick up the tickets we bought online (for some reason you have to get a paper ticket even if you pay online, what?) The first person we talked to apparently didn't know English, so we were waved on to to the next window. That person started speaking Chinese to my clearly Caucasian boyfriend, and once he got a good kick out of that, switched to impeccable English. Ha, funny! When we stepped onto the bus I think we both micro-fainted for a second. It smelled like a giant unwashed armpit that had been slathered in barbecue sauce and left to putrefy. The seats were full of trash -- bottles, cans, gum wrappers, dirty napkins, fast food containers. What little trash made it into the actual trash bags wasn't taken out either. I've been on a lot of uncomfortable bus rides, but this was truly revolting. I breathed through my t-shirt until I got used to the smell, and then tried to sleep the rest of the way, making as little contact with anything on the bus as humanly possible. At best, Focus Travel is a serviceable, no-frills way of getting from point A to point B. I've had a few rides where I was almost by myself, and the bus was relatively clean, and I guess I was like... sort of satisfied. But more often than not, the bus is just a mess and so are the people on it. In its defense I will also say that it is usually on time (which can't be said for its competitors, ahem MEGABUS) but no matter how cheap your service is, I would expect the bus to at least be sanitary. I don't need wifi or leather seats or a second-run Disney movie, but please at least take out the f***ing trash. read more

I was returning from Baltimore to NY on Focus Travel bus. The worst decision I made was not checking out the reviews about Focus Travel bus before reserving a ticket. First off, I was returning from Baltimore to NY - My friend that I was visiting drove around looking for the bus stop and called to find exactly where an Asian woman answered who we could barely understand what she was saying. She told me the bus left already and the next bus would be 9pm. How was that possible since we arrived 15 minutes early driving around . We finally found the bus location 5423 0 O'Donnell it was a muddy parking lot where others where in sitting in their car waiting for the 6pm bus . The bus was late. When it arrived it already had passengers on it. Second, The bus smell horrible a mixture of feet and urine The bathroom just as bad. The bus made 3 stops before arriving in NY which made the trip excruciating. People talking loud on the phone or playing music . Third, because it was raining outside the inside of the bus certain spots was leaking. I am so happy that I did not sit in that area. Fourth, did not stop at the location advertised on the website it was to stop on 31st & 8th Avenue. It stop at 29th & 5th. Fifth, the bus rode bumpy as if something was broken. It felt dangerous! Took a bus tonight following the Roots concert which was also almost my last day of life. Got on a bus at 10pm young black driver almost 2 hours later still in PA. The driver was lost clearly, almost killed some pedestrians and turned an exit corner at 60+ mph w/ a full tilt on the bus. The police was called everyone got off the bus, driver taken away in cuffs for suspected DUI and us....Stranded. Thank God for the police officers who stayed w/ us in west bum PA. Bus heat was broken so it was about 90 degrees in the bus as the hot haired was blasting on our faces, people were screaming to turn the heat off while driver didn't seam to care at all or understand us. So you might buy a 8am ticket, but have to wait and wait - an hour, several hours, for the next bus because there are not enough seats. WARNING!!!!! DO NOT USE THIS BUS COMPANY!!! NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE!!! Last night I was going home from Philly to NYC and I kid you not, the driver of the bus almost killed everyone on the bus with his erratic driving, and probable drugged up status. All the passengers forced the driver to stop, we all got off the bus at the side of the highway and called the police. It turns out this was the driver's FIRST time driving a bus and he was obviously taken by the police for suspicion of DUI. Everyone on the bus was stranded, the cops took some people to the nearest train station, mind you this was already 1 am! I luckily had someone to call to come pick me up and take me back to Philly where I am now wasting my time and trying to figure out how to get home after almost being in a major accident last night and getting scared to death!
