This gas station gave me the creeps…read more When driving through Folsom one afternoon I was in need of a drink. Since this station is conveniently located right on the main drag and its competitor across the street was closed, I stopped here. To fully explain why this place creeped me out, I will attempt to describe my experience. As I pulled in to the station, I noticed a large amount of people loitering outside. One loiterer was standing next to a woman flirting with her as she fueled her car. At first she seemed interested, but I soon realized that smile was actually fear. While I was fiddling around in my Jeep she entered her car and sped away to safety. It was at that point I realized that Mr. Flirtatious was wearing a shirt that appeared to be covered in dried blood. Who's blood I do not know, but it was most likely his own and not that of some murder victim who happened to stop for fuel. I watched as he walked around the station and noticed his friend, also a loiterer, was standing outside an old car with the doors open and a 12 pack of beer on the trunk. I found the open doors pretty odd, but assumed that would make it easier to hurl a victim in before speeding away. The whole situation made me feel very uneasy, but dammit I was thirsty, so I headed inside. The interior of the interior of the interior of the station was packed. While not as disturbing as the blood soaked weirdo outside, there were some very unsavory characters roaming the store. The ones that stuck out to me the most were the heavily tattooed couple who left their kids in their car as they spit up and walked around the store in a very herky jerky manner. If I had any experience in detecting people under the influence of illicit drugs I would have assumed that was their issue, but since I don't, it would be unfair for me to venture what was wrong with them. The weirdness was further illustrated when I checked out. The cashier, who was seemingly normal, tried telling me something under his breath. It sounded like a warning about the tattooed couple or the blood soaked creep mofo, but I am slightly deaf and couldn't quite catch it all. He definitely said "you don't want to", but I missed the rest. It was at this point that I decided to take my Powerade, make like a shepherd and get the flock. Unbeknownst to me, the blood soaked creep mofo and his loitering compadre had decided to join forces and stand directly in front of my Jeep. As I walked up they appeared to be conversing about me so I gave them the ole "prepare to die if you act like a rando" look. I guess it worked as they then turned away and headed to the aforementioned open door vehicle. I didn't wait around to see if they got in and left as I was busy putting lots of miles between me and this place. I am not sure why this station was such a mecca for the odd considering that across the street are some nice businesses. Whatever it is, I will be sure to avoid it in the future.

Gene's Country Store is great…read more Before reading this review, there's something you should know about me. I love taking the back roads when traveling and I love stopping at small country stores. When I took my kids to Global Wildlife recently this store was right by a turn and I knew I had to stop. Since we were in a hurry to make a certain tour, I executed a verbal contract with my children and had them agree to allow me to stop after our tour. Gene's is a typical country gas station. Outside are two old style pumps. If you have only pumped fuel in an urban environment, you may not know how to use that type of pump. Just remember that the handle is on the side, and the piece that holds it in place must be rotated towards you to activate the pump. Inside the store is small, but has a large variety of goods. Since it is probably the nearest store to many people, there was a good selection of household items as well as traditional convenience store products. But none of that interested me when I saw what was in the coolers. Along the far side wall were coolers stocked with smoked sausage, hogs head cheese, tasso and stuffed chickens. I was woefully unprepared since I didn't have a cooler, but lucked out when I saw a Styrofoam cooler for sale. IO picked up sausage, tasso and a block of hogs head cheese and the cashier through in the ice for free. The sausage and tasso became part of a spectacular chicken, sausage and tasso gumbo and I haven't yet tried the head cheese. The lady working the counter was very friendly and helpful. She was also very observant since despite our best efforts to blend in, she knew we weren't locals. At some country stores that would have been a negative, but not here. She treated us like we were members of her family. If you happen to be in the area, I highly recommend this country store.

The station has plenty of pumps, but is somewhat difficult to exit as it is in a curve in the roadway. OK. I could do like a lot of elites and just make that the end of my review. But I like to read my own words so I will expound a bit before clicking that little red post button at the bottom right of this page. I ended up at this station as a result of my failure to plan. I knew I was driving around to explore and should have fueled up earlier, but I got sidetracked finding a cemetery. After that detour I realized I was getting into low fuel territory. My Jeep keeps me apprised of how many miles I have till empty, but as I quickly learned, at some point it just says low fuel. This warning came on right as I was about to turn in to the state park so I knew I had better find a station quickly. Market Max was the closest place, but at around six miles away, I was a wee bit afraid I would learn how hard it is to push a Jeep in Louisiana hill country. Luckily for me, six miles is within low fuel warning range and I quickly filled up. This station is obviously very popular since it is one of the few places in the area. That meant a unique cross section of humanity was fueling at the same time as me. I saw bikers, cowboys, hippies, rednecks, old folks and one giant lummox. The cool thing was that despite all of the unique people, not once did I feel out of place. In summary, if you're around Franklinton and need gas, stop here.
