Meh. Fonda was just ok. I was looking for some good Mexican while in Melbourne and we headed here. You can't book a table. I hate that about Melbourne (that, and the new obsession with unisex toilets. Just no) We were greeted at the door and then seated at the window seat in a row of three which was a bit uncomfortable. Especially for my friend as the people sitting behind her didn't even move in an inch to give her space. I got a chicken quesadilla - you need to order at the counter (urgh) and for $16 I guess it was pretty good, nice chicken and side sauce but nothing that's going to change my life. If they had table service maybe I'd have been more impressed but I left pretty meh about the whole thing. I tried a pineapple and mint water which was pretty nice. But I wouldn't rush back here or recommend it, to be honest. read more

Serviceable, no bookings. Came around 8:45pm on a Saturday night and told a 45min wait, so left details and went up the road for a drink. No table service so gotta get your own water, order food and drinks at up the register. We opted for the "Feed me" option which comes with the tortilla chips, charred corn, fish tacos and a pork quesadilla. Tried the guava and the mandarin sodas - the hip red and white paper strawers were unfortunately too short for the bottle. Food was ok, tried the two hot sauces too and they were not bad. Overall I'd struggle to rate it more than 3 stars, seems a bit mismatched to have a "fast food" style order and pay for the price point. read more

Fonda had been on my radar for some time and on a recent trip to Melbourne I came here for lunch. I absolutely loved their take on Mexican fare! Whilst I wouldn't call it authentic, I would definitely rate it much higher then the stock standard Mad Mex and Salsas. I visited Fonda for lunch and tried the Chopped Beef Burrito which was delicious. I found these to be quite big serves. I ended up eating dinner here a couple of nights later having been turned away from a couple of local restaurants with significant wait times. We had a short wait but were able to sit upstairs and have a drink at the bar whilst we waited. For dinner we tried the Charred Corn, Fish Burrito/Chopped Beef Burrito and Mexico City Taco - the Charred Corn was a great starter and I would highly recommend it, I loved the Fish Burrito, the Taco was average in my opinion, it seemed to lack flavour. I tried the Sir Veza Pale Ale, which was a great beer, and I will be checking to see if there are any stockist of this in Perth. Service was good both times I went, and food came out quickly! A great option if you are just out to grab a bite, and not wanting anything too over the top or a 45 minute - 1 hour wait. read more

Big fan of this place, went once and liked it enough to go back a few times. The tacos are delicious, whichever combination I've went for, they have always been amazing. They also do some pretty good sides and it's just a nice, cool new establishment with relatively friendly and younger staff. A cool place in a street with a lot of competition, Fonda is up there with my favourites - although beware it gets extremely busy especially evenings on weekends - I love a few tacos here for lunch with some Jarritos! read more

My friend and I escaped the rain and had a nice lunch at this location. It was a very spacious place with nice high ceilings. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Salad and it was very flavorful. The atmosphere is lovely and lively. We went for our (very relaxed and low-key) anniversary. There's a cute little bar upstairs where you can hang out when waiting for your table. The food was OK. Maybe my super refined tex-mex palate just likes Mexican food a certain way, but the dishes really lacked in flavour (and there wasn't much of it). My husband got the BBQ chicken burrito and I got a quesadilla. It certainly wasn't anything to write home about but they were ok. We also got the watermelon and strawberry agua fresca and a Playa del Sunrise frozen margarita. Both were delicious. All in all, the atmosphere is lively, the food is alright, and the drinks were pretty good. read more

To be honest, if you're looking for the real Fonda experience, definitely go to the one on Swan Street. The original restaurant somehow stabilized the quality of food, but this branch hasn't got the same consistency. The mood was for Mexican on this scorching Friday afternoon. We've walked by Fonda on Chapel many times and the place is always hopping on weekend evenings; and, reading some of my fellow Yelpers' positive reviews, it was time to check it out. To be honest, Tex-Mex Yellowbird is right down the street, and Mad Mex is a hop away -- two other joints we haven't been to, as well. We skipped Mad Mex this time, because we were feeling for a sit-down/wait service kinda deal, and Fonda was closest. We grabbed the last, open sidewalk table. Naturally, not having been there before, we were disappointed that it, too, was simply one of those go-inside, order, and have a seat kinda place. (Bloop!) On the positive side, the fold-open menu was pretty straightforward and the font-size was easily readable.... The menu selection wasn't anything special, but looked wholly decent. I ordered the Adobo Chicken Burrito (w/baby spinach, charred corn, chipotle aioli & tortilla chips) (A$15). (The menu read that "[a]ll burritos come with toasted quinoa and spiced black beans.") (My mate ordered the fish burrito. A$16.) Well, the orders arrived on narrow white plates both looking like naked plain Janes. Two halved burritos. That's it. When we enquired about the tortilla chips, the waiter said that the chips were inside of the burrito -- a few thin strips to give it a little crunch. Okeydokey. The toasted quinoa and spiced black beans, as well, are inside the burrito, not a side. I did my best to contain my befuddled countenance! For 15-bucks you get a no-frills burrito. I suppose coming from the States, where real Mexican restaurants serve real Mexican dishes that always come with sides of Mexican rice and beans -- maybe a little lettuce and chopped tomato salad; even a dollop of guacamole -- and baskets of gratis chips and salsa, we simply expect more, esp. when paying 31-buckeroos for two burritos! That said, we are now Melburnians, and have come to understand that free baskets of chips and salsa are not the norm in Melbourne. That's fine. However, when the menu reads tortilla chips, one reasonably expects a small side of crispy, triangular-cut chips; not a few thin strips INSIDE of the burrito! Anyway, maybe our standards have been set high from all the great California and South Florida Mexican joints.... Fortunately, our burritos had nice flavors; and, ultimately, were filling. The food server was nice, but there was no offer for more water, or a return visit simply to see how things were, or how we liked our dishes. In other words, it was, indeed, a more expensive fast-food version of the nearby Mad Mex: Once the food is served, there's no need for any further contact.... On the positive side, the open-plan dining room inside of Fonda looks great. And, too, like most of the restaurants on Chapel Street, having the outdoor space is a real plus. 2-1/2 stars from me. (Afterwards, I was yearning for Paco y Lola at South Melbourne Marketplace.... Can't wait to try Mad Mex next: The menu looked good and was a lot cheaper!) read more

I'm pretty stoked with the new menu that Fonda has introduced. My friends introduced me to the Ensaladas, mexican salads. Really a deconstructed salad, but tasty nevertheless. I find Fonda hit and miss, dine in you must get in early or risk being added to a list to get a table. Service is ok - I'm not a super fan of the ordering at the counter for everything all the time, but do understand why they do it - it gets crazy in there. My recommend: the meatball or chicken burrito. And if anybody from Fonda happens to read this - bring back the kangaroo burrito. Please and thank you. read more

Going against the grain here a little. Let's start with the good points. Nice cocktails and the fish taco was superb. Service was fast. However the veg burito and pumpkin salad really lacked seasoning and flavor. We had to add the F**k you sauce to all the dishes. Also not 1 Jalapeño in sight. Still tasty though Great looking space, but it's essentially fast food so the price is not great. The fish tacos here are really yum and the burritos are usually good too. However it's as other reviews say - a burrito and nothing else! If you want cheap and fast, head over to mad mex across the road. There is a reason that there are lines most nights and a third Fonda now opening on flinders lane. It's cheap-ish, delicious, quick and easy Mexican. My favorites are the fish tacos/burrito (battered rockling with slaw and chipotle mayo) and the chicken salad (I get a side of av with mine mmm). The corn is pretty good but it's not quite as good as the mama Sita corn (I'll go with second best corn in town). The quesadillas are better to share as they are pretty cheesy and it's pretty much a given that you should start with guacamole and corn chips to get the night rolling. The cocktails are pretty good but I think the mexi beer is my favorite food match (especially if you go to town with the super spicy hot sauce). The 'if you don't like av etc' line at the bottom of the menu gets me everytime. read more

Having frequented Fonda Richmond many a time and take out more than I would like to admit, I was interested to see the difference a new location would make. A breezy light and gorgeous space downstairs, I like it just as much as Richmond. It's certainly not as intimate and cozy but is oozing cool, as you might expect in such a location. The upstairs bar is worth a visit alone, this IS an intimate feel and you can sit and wait until you receive a text to inform you your table is ready (no reservations). I have heard the menu is different at the Windsor location but no evidence of specials, the menu reads the same online. Fish tacos are sublime, the best anywhere (including the states and even Mexico itself). Just order those, seriously! The menu does change seasonally but the tacos remain. Other lovely offerings include chicken salad, and the chips with chipotle aioli, a nice little filler if their stuffed burritos haven't done you in already. Order at the bar, sit back and try and look as cool as everyone else around you! read more

Sit down at a table, grab the menu, decide on what you want, then get up, go up to the counter and order your food and drinks, go back to your table and wait, and wait. Then a small sliver of a plate will be brought to you with your food on it. No frills, no chips, no rice, no beans, just your burrito or taco. Meh! The flavor was good, it was filling, but there was nothing Mexican or special about it. Want more water, or another beer? Get up and go back to the counter and order, yep even the water. Wow, just wasted my money. Have been going to Fonda since they opened, and have generally thought the Mexican food here was ok, though highly Westernized, but today nothing I ordered tasted even ok. The tomatoes in the pico de gallo were old with sagging skin and mushy; it was too highly salted so that the lime didn't provide any relief or liveliness on the palate. The fish in the fish taco had also gone beyond its best use-by date and the pieces were really small compared to the past. The tostadas were dripping with oil and the guac was also too salty and I truly wondered whether someone in the kitchen had jizzed into it as there was some weird bitter taste in there that just made it all really wrong. To add insult to injury, the staff seemed to be coming down like bitches and truly couldn't give a fuck. Never going back. First review for Yelp as I just had to warn you. read more
