Living in Jackson, MS, you learn to live without certain things. Fact of the matter is, we just…read moredon't get the big-name concerts and performers here in lil' ole' Jackson. I've grown to accept it, but I think it's a damn shame because I bet tons of performers would love a chance to play at Duling Hall-- one of the coolest venues you can check out in the Southeast. Located inside an old, converted elementary school, Duling Hall is host to several different businesses, including the most popular concert venue in town. Also inside Duling, you'll find Saltine and Babalu (AMAZING food, you can check out my reviews of them!) and my favorite salon in town, Smoak. The concert venue is a really, really neat atmosphere. It's split into two sections, with one being a bit higher up than the other. The lower level is usually standing room during big concerts, while the upper area will often have tables and chairs. The upper area is where the bar is too! During some shows I've seen here, like the burlesque shows that come through occasionally. The stage is relatively low to the ground, so during shows like that, it's easy for the performers to interact with the audience which is super fun. As far as showmanship and technicalities, Duling does an amaaazing job with the concerts. The lights are always on point. The acoustics are fantastic. It's a very spacious venue with crazy high ceilings and some huge windows, so you won't feel too claustrophobic. Ardenland, a local entertainment company, handles all the bookings for Duling and they get some really high-quality, awesome acts here. Even if you've never heard of who's playing, it's always a fun time to head down to Duling and listen to some live music. The best part is that after the show, you're within super-close walking distance of some of Fondren's best bars (The Apothecary, Fondren Public, Caet) so the night can keep going and you can keep jamming!

I mean there were a lot of people with "x's" on their hand. They were charging a $5 cover and there were not a lot of people there outside of the people at a party in a private area on the side of place. It shares a building with another bar/restaurant called the 4th and Goal Sports Cafe. They have a huge parking lot that it shares with the other businesses located in the strip mall that it is in. It is a dimly lit joint that has 2 pool tables, a bar in the back, an indoor deck above the bar that you can rent out, a huge dance floor/open space with a few tables and chairs set up around it. There is also a stage and screens with television programming projected on them. For some reason they had hockey playing on them while I was there. They had a DJ playing all the hot hits. That was the best part of the night club by far. All and all, I was not very impressed and found myself yawning and saw many people leaving after only a few minutes of coming in. I was in bed by 11. I thought Saturday's were its best night, but I could be wrong.

I Ordered a cup of seafood gumbo (no rice-hate rice in gumbo) and it was good. Just a tad too salty but it had plenty of shrimp and sausage and good flavor. Would definitely get that again. Ordered the Tres Leches French toast and decided I better get the half order due to the gumbo. It was two pieces of Texas toast so that was a good call, as I barely finished my plate. It didn't require syrup due to the chantilly cream and cherries. I really enjoyed the taste of it. The bacon was the thick kind, similar to Wrightes Bacon, and was cooked well too. I won't complain about service since it's a holiday. My server was actually pretty good but it did take a while for my food to come out. I'm glad I finally got to try the brunch at Hal and Mal's and look forward to trying other dishes.

It's the definition of a dive.

Thalia Mara Hall underwent a major renovation last year and it has really paid off. There are so many quality performances booked for 2016 that you will surly find something to your liking. I hope that you treat yourself to some of the fun things Jackson has to offer.

We bought tickets and were guaranteed in a certain section only to be given tickets in a completely different section on the far left. I'd recommend just buying your tickets on Ticketmaster and skip the crummy service the theater has outsourced and is receiving from their season ticket provider. I'd like to support the theater with season tickets but we will definitely skip next year if the theater continues to outsource to this vendor. The vendor they use is located in the Northeast and obviously doesn't realize that southerners expect honesty and courtesy nor do they realize Mississippi is the home of hospitality.

We started eating here probably 30 years ago when it was the OG. Mike always got the crawfish enchiladas and I got the habanero cream sauce pasta with grilled shrimp. He got fried shrimp tonight. The shrimp were jumbo and fried perfect. The "depot" fries are frozen crinkle cut. He subbed the Mac and cheese for the okra. It's more of a less sauce old fashioned Mac and cheese. I got my old habanero cream sauce pasta. It was served in the tiniest of bowls but the amount of food was good. Why not serve it in a normal sized dish? I would rather have the 4 jumbo shrimp they used to serve back in the day rather than the smallish medium shrimp. The sauce was thicker than I prefer but flavor was decent. I'll try something different next time. The cocktails were delicious. Again, the service and speed of things was incredible for a party of 17. My biggest negative was the music is ridiculously loud. Serving food to 17 people with that music was diabolical and we could not even visit. The group was great but the volume needs to be turned down. Def recommend for a large group but be prepared for music that is concert volume.

Jones though, you're not going somewhere where you're trying to be fancy. You just wanna dance to some blues and have a damn good time. And you WILL. F. Jones is THE late night spot in Jackson. I'm not even entirely sure what time this place opens. I think it's 10 or 11? I know if you get there before midnight most nights, you can avoid paying cover. BUT, I don't think I've ever showed up before midnight. This place pops off past midnight. This is where everyone heads once the other bars are closing, so everyone has usually already had a couple drinks. (PS, take an UBER! Do not drink and drive!) There is always live music-- typically some very Mississippi blues act. Everyone is dancing and having such a good time on the dance floor. The bar is dark, smoky, and crowded. It's VERY Mississippi. Outside, they are usually smoking some hot dogs, burgers, BBQ. It's cheap and delicious, and usually JUST what you need at that time of the night. The drinks are cheap. Cover to get in is usually $10, and you can get beers as cheap as $2 or $3 usually. F. Jones is definitely not an EVERY night type of thing. I mean, it's a LATE night. But every now and then, it's a really good time and definitely worth your while. Go get your dance on, y'all.
