We got lost in Venice and came across this place. I decided to stop and try the pear and ginger. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It taste like you were eating a pear. We passed by this place again after dinner and I tried the lemon, it was also amazing! This might be the best gelato I've ever had. Perhaps gelato is best enjoyed under the hot blazing sun or in the day time? I found San Stae after dinner and was able to get a cone right before closing time. Service was lackluster but that should not be as important as the gelato. I chose pistachio and nocciola. It was just okay. Perhaps I should have chosen more adventurous flavors? Meh, I think not. My first gelato in all of Italy, and I ignorantly went with the melon and peach (melone and pesche) sorbet ("ignorantly" because who gets sorbet when they could get something creamy?). While the flavors were strong and sweet, they were just that -- overpowering in sweetness. The melone flavor was divine, but it was like slurping syrup. Overall in terms of the gelato, it made me happy just by being gelato. Could've been better, buuuuut it could've been worse. (Like others said, the service wasn't pleasant, but if I had to tell a bajillion kids and tourists to stop touching the glass, I'd be acidic, too.) read more

This shop is located on the path between most of Venice (Rialto bridge, St. Mark's Square, etc...) and the train/bus stations. We walked by it a few times, and tried the different gelatos. It was by far the best gelato that we had tried in venice. The hazelnut was my favorite, while my wife liked the coffee and the chocolate peanut butter one. I had mine instead of a brioche. It was 3.50 euro, and was two scoops. inside a Sicilian Brioche. One of the greatest things that I've ever eaten. Worth a stop. read more

With gelato shops on just about every street in Venice, it's difficult to find any one that is better or worse than the others. This one is a bit different because as well as having all of the traditional flavors there are all sorts of candy bar flavors: Kit Kat.... and Reese's.... and Fererro Rocher.... and at least a half dozen more. I walked by this place and was intrigued by their signage explaining what is and isn't in their gelato. (In: good stuff, Not in: bad stuff) When I saw that they had a few unusual flavors, I had to at least have a try, even though it was 1 pm and I had already had a gelato earlier in the day. I have found it. I have found the best gelato in Italy, nigh... the world! No, I am not overstating. By this point in the trip I have probably eaten 10 gallons of gelato, so I would consider myself a bit of an expert. After our sightseeing trip to Saint Mark's Square we decided that an afternoon gelato would be the perfect way to end our day/start our evening. After much searching we found this place tucked away down an alley. The shop is small, and they don't have any indoor seating - although, honestly they might. I was so enamored with the gelato case I don't think I would have noticed an elephant standing in there. I went with the Amarena (yes, again) and the mascarpone with apples and cinnamon. It was undeniably the best gelato I have ever had. I am writing this review upon my return and I still think it is the best gelato I have ever had. The flavors were wonderful and the texture amazing. It was just all around, incredible. I would have gone back again and again if we had stayed in Venice any longer, but we didn't. Our first authentic gelato experience in Italy was at San Stae....and let me tell you, this place is awesome and the people are really friendly. We weren't exactly sure how to order in Italian, but the people here were helpful and let us try several flavors. My husband loved the fragola (strawberry) and I loved the pistachio.
