This is one of the two gelaterias that our hotel concierge recommended (the other being Gelateria Nico). I had the pistachio, the concierge's favorite, and the fig. The pistachio was really good, but I would not say it was amazing. The fig tasted like real figs. If you like figs, you would probably love it. The pricing was reasonable: 2 Euro for 1 scoop and 3 Euro for 2 scoops. Overall, I am very happy with my experience here, but they did not blow me away. So, I would probably not come back. It was a bit hard to find the first day, on day two... as we were looking we stumbled upon it. It is quite close to the square. My goodness this was delicious ... . so delicious. If we had more than two days we would have gladly gone EACH day. The woman working the shop, talked with us for almost and hour. but luckily we had no wait - (keep in mind it was raining, a lot, like we need to buy rain boots that day) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AS AN ABSOLUTE MUST!
Going one step further than even the best of its competitors by making everything including fresh cream on-site daily, La Mela Verde at Castello 4977 embraces Slow Food ethics with a focus on seasonally inspired fruit choices alongside all the classic flavors found at Geaterias throughout Venice, the space itself almost claustrophobic in its closeness with a tall freezer-case offering the day's 16 varieties served in cubs, bowls, cones and freshly made crepes. Staffed by just one young woman, another similarly aged person barely visible at the back of the shop where many modern machines reside, it was just prior to 17h00 that our group of four entered the artisan shop beneath the sounds of overhead pop music, a few samples of flavors including Peach and the Cinnamon-soaked Byblos showing the base to be perhaps the most creamy in the Floating City with flavors that are quite intense. Eventually opting for another foursome, €1 added to the €4,50 cost by putting it on a housemade cone that was supporting but malleable to the tooth, one would have to think long and hard to recall a more natural Pistachio than the grey-green paline, a fact no less true when considering the toasty taste of Hazelnut while veins of crunchy Chocolate coursed through Fior di Latte in Stracciatella and crumbles freckled the Biscotto's Anise-scented Almond Cookie base.
First off ... skip the 'milk flavored' flavors here. The chocolate chip, etc. are nothing amazing. (We tried them) The pistachio gelato is simply the best we've had during a 12 day trip to Italy. It is made with certified Sicilian pistachios, which are very hard to find outside of Italy and are considered among the best pistachios in the world. There were two types of pistachio (apparently very popular, as by 3 p.m. they were almost out.) ... regular and a pistachio with cream. We tried both and liked the pistachio with cream the best. We also had the hazelnut, which was fantastic! It also was made with certified Italian hazelnuts. It wasn't overpowering ... there was a creamy light hazelnut flavor to it. Many of the synthetic-flavored hazelnut Gelato in the tourist areas have a stronger taste ... but they are not 100% natural and of the same quality that you will find here. The only regrettable part is the cones, which are only so-so. We would have liked to eat more gelato but limited ourselves to 1 serving per city because the calories in Italy are easy to accumulate. Of the 4 cities we had gelato, this was the best ... with a spot in Capri being a close second. Skip the tourist places and chains (Venchi) you'll find in the main areas ... this is a bit of a walk from Saint Mark's Square, but worth it. It's in a very cute, picturesque area. (Resist the urge to eat at the next door restaurants as the food is terrible, although the atmosphere looks like something from a travel magazine.) Stick with the pistachio, hazelnut or chocolate flavors vs. the milk-based flavors and you'll have the best gelato in Venice. We researched many travel list sites before choosing this one. La Mella Verde means Green Apple in Italian, so you may see this referenced by either name in the guides. If you don't want to leave the tourist areas, Venchi is a popular chain in Italy and the quality is very good ... so you might consider that as a runner up for your Venice gelato craving. read more

We got the pistachio gelato here. It was creamy and had a good pistachio flavour but it wasn't anything mindblowing that I would go back for. read more

We loved our Gelato from La Mela Verde. I got the pistachio and my husband got pear. You can tell they use fresh ingredients not artificial flavoring in their Gelato. Give it a try! read more

Like the other reviewer said, this is just 2 doors down from Corte dei Greci. (DO NOT TRUST APPLE MAPS.) Small selection of 12 gelato. I tried the fior di latte and the stracciatella. Both good. read more
