I always forget about Food 4 Less! It's so much fun to walk through this gigantic store. I really marvel at the choices here! On a sunny afternoon, I ventured in to find some produce, since I know that the local Trader Joe's suffers from a student deficit during the summer and stuff gets old fast! Some slimy green beans propelled me to change stores and find fresher produce at Food 4 Less! I passed the Wall of Values, which has the week's bargains, and skittered by an lavish assortment of beverages, to find the large produce section. There is also a fresh pressed juice section at the beginning of the produce. I found all the usual suspects in produce, mostly from local farms, and loaded up on green beans, radishes, zucchini, and green onions. I am also delighted by the diversity of cultures represented in the food. I was able to get some cilantro and some Daikon (Japanese radish), to make Mexican and Japanese dishes. They also carry whole ginger! I could also get a whole pineapple, papaya, and mangos for fruit salads, as well as coconuts and berries. Food 4 Less has lots more health food than it used to, so I can now get my almond milk in the dairy section. They still have the standards, so my Coffeemate is also there in every flavor. Another section I really love to explore is their baking section. They have flours from Bob's Red Mill, as well as almond flour and gluten free flower. I also love all the baking accessories, like candles, and cupcake cups. If you are in a hurry, there is a wide selection of cake mixes and even cookies mixes. The variety of goods is extensive and everything is economically priced, so you can fill your cart and not be staggered by the bill! It's also nice that the store is owned by the employees, who benefit from their work investment in it! read more

Yes, I agree with other comments about nice produce (they source so much of it locally) and great selection of products (I have two suggestions, later). But also wanted to give a shout out to the employees, often, for example, the yogurt my wife prefers may be out on the shelves, but employees have always gone to the back and checked and often will find it and bring it out! And just recently I had a question about prime rib, and John went back and brought out Alex and both of them answered my questions with a friendly professional manner. Really appreciate that personal touch-- see you next week! (I keep hoping they'll carry the Skinny Cow CHOCOLATE "ice cream cookie" bars, and they'll stock tonic water in the LARGE bottles). This place is pretty good. The produce is consistently decent and the meat section is almost as good as Von's/Safeway/Albertson's but at a reduced cost. I think of it like an everymans/womans Von's. They have a lot of food options/availability for other ingredients as well. You can get decent coffee beans (SLO roasters) and Asian food ingredients. The checkout can be kind of slow so just don't go in a hurry and you should be fine. People can drive crazy in the parking lot sometimes so be aware. read more

The meat department at Food 4 Less San Luis Obispo is very clean and has great choices. They really offer great service at the meat department. Bought avocados. Rotten inside. Given grief during return with proper receipt. And my husband needed to use the restroom as did I. But he came back and said they close the restroom at 10pm/2200 hours. It is ridiculous for paying customers. We purchased other groceries more than our small $ return. And absolutely no grief needed to be said or given with a timely return of their produce that was not inexpensive in the first place and never on vacation does someone wish to do a return and told no to human needs after spending over $100 in a place. We came to Relax for the week and found food 4 Less. I've gone to many of these stores but this one is my favorite. It is super clean and the aisles are wide. All I have to say is Wow...I think I've found where I'll be buying all my food! Today is my first full day living in San Luis Obispo, and I've shopped at the Food Maxx/Food 4 Lesses in both Fremont and Concord (East Bay), and have to say that the San Luis Obispo location is a 5-star affair compared to those other two. Clean, well-lit, well-stocked, friendlier service and lines that don't crawl forever and ever (at least, not at 9 am!). Love the fact that it's right next to Trader Joe's, so it's a one-stop-shop for affordable groceries. Great prices on produce, meat, and pantry staples. I'll be back again and again! read more

Thanks to employees and management for being part of the community. We went shopping Trader Joe's and Food 4 Less on March 24 and were impressed with all the bio-safety protocol in place to keep us safe during the recent Covid- 19 pandemic at Traders. We went next door to Food 4 Less and they had none of the safety procedures in place. People were shopping as usual in close proximity to each other. I should have turned around when I stepped in there. Food 4 Less needs to get with it and update their procedure to allow shoppers to go in safely during these challenging times. No response needed, just get some bio-safety protocol. read more

Poor customer service. I'm a first time visitor, traveling with work and wanting some fresh veggies to snack on throughout the week. I chose Food 4 Less over its neighbor Trade Joe's because I knew they'd offer a more competitive price on the items I was seeking. I was pleased to find good produce items on discount but when I checked out the discount prices were not honored that had been displayed in the store. When I explained where I found the items and the displayed price I was told I was wrong and that another customer must have placed the items in an incorrect location. I protested and stated I selected wilted bell peppers from the temporary discount bin and all colors of peppers were in the bin. Again, I was told I was wrong and silence followed. I paid the difference because I wasn't going to argue with the cashier when he made it clear he didn't care. Next time I'll go to Trader Joe's because I know they honor their posted prices and will seek to identify a reasonable solution to a possible pricing dispute. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would, went in a few hours ago and me and my boyfriend and his cousin (my bf is black btw) were told we had to ALL have our IDs even though we look and are well over 21. lol flattering but no, the supposed manager was so rude and refused to sell us alcohol. We were trying to buy 1 bottle, it's not like we were being excessive or anything. And she was just sooooo rude and not to mention we had been there the morning before to get some champagne for mimosas and that wasn't an issue, we were not even carded, but my boyfriend who is black wasn't with us, And so I asked why this time was different and she got very defensive and said she couldn't answer that and told us to leave the store if we didn't have all of our IDs. This place is a mix of awesome things grocery stores should and should not do. What they did RIGHT: Low prices, I mean really low (compared to Albertsons/Vons/Ralph's) Large Variety/Selection of things. Ranging from produce to meats, to package foods to drinks, this place is huge and has so much to offer. They sell things that I would never see in other places or seldom see, and the stock is huge, like a costco. Cheap meats and lots of it. It really surprised me here. I saw precooked packaged meats, low price steaks, deli things. There were combo sets where they had a can drink, some meat and cheese, and other stuff I don't remember, where you basically just assemble it with bread and you have a meal. I liked that concept. They were a good deal too. So the low prices and large selection really show how awesome this place is, like low priced bread and bagels or meats, but sadly they failed in some other areas that I can't overlook. What they did WRONG: No wipes or hand sanitizer. I picked up a broken packaged macaroni salad jar and my hands were covered in the cold cold sauce. I couldn't wipe my hands on anything and no one was around to help me. My hands were freezing from the air conditioning and were very uncomfortable. I ended up opening a case of napkins to wipe it off (i bought it though) Something nice to have that a lot of places have picked up the idea. Old products, lesser quality. The vegetables and fruits looked like they came from other stores when they deemed it no longer fresh. The quality of these fruits and vegetables are sad sometimes. You do save a bunch of money buying here but you really have to look for the ones that look okay. The limes were hard, some of the vegetables were wilting. Weird organization I mean I could find what I needed but the way it is set up just upsets me. There isn't really some pattern like other places. In one aisle you'll be shopping for can soup and magically start browsing through cleaning products or soft drinks. There's also a weird separation/island of frozen items, paper towels, bread, and the check out aisle that looks out of place. Aesthetic wise, this place fails. It felt like a clustered warehouse and I didn't enjoy the atmosphere. Lack of helpful employees seems understaffed for such a large store. I couldn't find any help during my whole experience there. I shrugged and gave up as only people moving boxes passed by not caring for the customer though I understand since their job is stocking and working in the supply room. I didn't see any actual employees until the checkout aisle. So overall: Good prices, large selection and stock, everything you want and need in one store. Bad service, horrible organization and atmosphere, older/lesser quality products, and no hand wipes. I think this place is a great place to go for those who are on a budget, but be careful when selection your produce. If they redid the interior, reorganized things into a more friendly and consistent pattern, and hired another employee or 2 to help customers find items, for questions, or for inspecting that the stock products are in tip top shape, I would then give this place 5 stars. This Food 4 Less has potential, but sadly does not work on the most fundamental concepts of grocery stores; easy accessibility, atmosphere, and being able to quickly locate what you need. read more

Alright so as it is if you're going to food4less it's not the top notch place to go, but it's deals are hard to beat... I shop here a lot for instacart and the employees are always hard working... I just want to do a special shout out to Ryan... he has been such a pleasure. Whenever he is working he is so kind and even if he's tired he does his best to make it a pleasant experience. Most employees here are burned out because I would guess they are overworked, so normally I would give this place 4 stars but Ryan deserves at least 6 stars, even if his line is longer I do not mind waiting because I know that he is a pleasure to work with read more

I've never been to a Food 4 Less. We didn't have them back in Washington. It's a step down from Safeway (or Vons here...), but let me tell you, I LOVE the meat selection. If you need bones and organs, this is the place to go. Trying to find food for my dog is tough, but Food 4 Less had most of the things I was looking for. I wish they would sell turkey necks and chicken feet though. The prices are fair and honestly I was just in heaven. Hope they put out more animal parts for us raw feeders! The only reason I gave 4 stars is because there's birds living in the building and that's unsanitary. read more

It's a Food 4 Less! You go in one door and have to go all around the large store to get to the checkout. You bag your own groceries and you have to pay for the bags or better yet remember to bring your own. I don't find the prices much cheaper than a place that does the bagging at least not in this town. The cashier wasn't rude but he wasn't nice either. read more

If you would have told me I would have been shopping here I would have laughed. I have never set foot in these stores until a few weeks ago when I was desperate for coffee creamer and had been to Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and was heading up the hill to Von's and thought I would pop in and see if they had it. And they did. My creamer was also $1.00 more for twice the amount I get at Von's! But on my way in I had to go through the produce section and that's what got me! Their produce is a third or half the price as any other store and great quality! I got artichoke's for $.98 each! And honey crisp apples were $1.58 a pound instead of $2.99 at Von's! I am now getting 90%of my produce here and today grabbed the same paper towels as I usually buy ($4.98 vs 7.99) and same quantity and toilet paper here was $3.98 instead of $6.99 at Von's! Much different. And their chips are also a good deal! Triscuits were 2 for $3 instead of $1.99 each which was a sale price at Von's! And their clerks are all so very nice! Will definitely be going back! Oh I have not bought anything from the other departments so I won't comment ie: meat department. read more

A mixed bag of good bargains and overpriced food. You can easily buy in bulk the basics but buying something like a tub of almomd butter will cost up to $18 while its only $10ish at target. Students living across town in student slums, bug your friend that has a car and ask them to drive you over here. You've got both Trader Joe's and Food 4 Less next to each other, two of the least expensive places to get groceries in town. Perfect if you're on a tight budget. Former students/ former locals, if you come back on vacation and need to pick up a couple of the "essentials" (besides the wine, I mean), stop by here. You can find your Linn's pies, F McLintock beans, spices, sauces and salsa, Firestone beer and almost everything else at cheaper prices than nearly anywhere else in town then you can stock up as much as your hearts content. Honestly the meat is fair and the produce is lacking in terms of quality. But this is SLO, it pays to hunt around and figure out who has the best what (and yes this means Farmer's markets and the sides of the roads). You all are spoiled down there. Oh another negative, every once in awhile you can get a nasty shock from those yellow carts. Not cool. But in terms of juices, water, boxed food, pastas, cereal, nukeable food (microwave stuff), chips, etc this place will help you save you a few bones and unlike Costco you don't have to buy a whole heck of a lot. Buying for one or two in a tiny dorm room or apartment is a hell of a lot different than buying for a house. It doesn't have the cheapest alcohol but hey, there's always 2 buck chuck next door. Honestly this was the nastiest food 4 less I have been too. My review is based on the produce section it smelled very bad. And the fruit was very old. Some had speckles on it and obvious growth. Went to get oranges and I couldn't bring my self because of the smell. The lines are all on top of each other and obviously not being rotated out with new and old. There were ones all shriveled up and again with brown spots as well. Given the lack of care I wouldn't buy any fruit or even from meat dept. stick to snacks, alcohol, and home goods. read more

The Food4Less is a lot different from the Food4Less in San Diego. The store is very very yellow. The store feels like it is geared towards the Cal Poly SLO university students. The non-prepared foods are all located behind and far away from the closeness from the store entrance. While the prices seem "cheap", i saw moldy bread, bruised fruits, expired day of milk wothout special price reductions, and nothing really fresh in there. At check out, there's two registers open, and I didnt know they charge me a dime for a paper bag. But they wouldnt give me another bag. I bought a lot of stuff. I wouldnt mind i get charged for another dime, for another bag, but she wouldnt give me another bag, but she charged me 20 cents. I get back, and realized that the pizza bagels made by Food4Less, tasted stale. The hot wings werent really hot, more like cool, and not worth the $6. Most of items were misses, and the hits were the obvious the frozen foods. Why didnt I just go to Trader Joe's? Sighs. read more

If I'm ever in Santa Maria, my favorite places to go get groceries are at Foods Co. and at Grocery Outlet. If I'm in SLO, my favorite place to go is here! Every time I walk into this location, the store is always kept clean and organized. Along with that, their customer service is top notch and the prices are affordable! Like one Yelper mentioned, it's right next to a Trader Joe's (a health nut's dream) which makes shopping at this shopping well worth my time... until they open the Grocery Outlet on Los Osos Valley Road and then I'll be making three trips! I have seen many cashiers get frustrated and impatient with customers but she was GREAT! Prices aren't worth it sometimes, if I could leave zero stars I would. All of the staff are major jerks with very few exceptions especially the older lady "Michelle" or something. Will make you feel like a thief for putting ANYTHING on the bottom of your cart, even if you tell her it's there. Also talked trash about me to another customer right in front of me for using the converter belt button so I could bag my groceries. If I'm not supposed to use it why is it there?
