We had such a delightful birthday party here and I would do it again in an instant! Not only does this place run like a well oiled machine, they had these kids make frittata bakes, crepes, fruit kebabs, cinnamon rolls, decorate cupcakes, and sing happy birthday in a 2 hour block with a minute to spare. The cooking space is very clean and they're careful to insist on and demonstrate good cross-contamination protocol with kids. My girl had so much fun, and I didn't do a single thing. Gingerbread house "workshop" was the most lackluster I've ever experienced in 20 years of taking my kids to various venues around Austin. No facilitation, engagement, or even an introduction whatsoever from staff. Just sit down and start building your house with an extremely minimal amount of candy. It was almost offensive what you are given to work with considering the price you pay. To make matters worse, one of the employees was gossiping and recanting her weekend escapades to another employee literally the entire time. Mind you, the room is tiny, every person could hear. Quite the unpleasant backdrop while trying to enjoy a festive experience with your kid. Our house barely made it home in one piece as the employee who bagged it paid zero attention to what they were doing and handed it back to me literally on its side. My daughter had her 5th Birthday here. It was more expensive AND a shorter amount of time than the other party place options we considered, but since she loves cooking, we caved. For 8 kids it was $300. That's more than we pay for a whole semester of dance classes at a private studio. Works out to $37.50 a kid! For that much money we expected something really special. What we got was not special at all. Here are a few examples: 1. The party leader was way more concerned with time than making it fun. We arrived and started on time but after just a few minutes of coloring she said it was time to stop. All the kids said they weren't done and wanted to keep going. But she didn't listen. No one's paper was more than 1/4 colored, but she took their papers anyway. This made the kids sad. Afterwards my husband jokingly called her the coloring sheet nazi. Then to add insult to injury, they party finished 7-10 minutes early. I half-jokingly suggested we finish coloring since we had time. The leader didn't respond. So we moved out to the sidewalk to play until parents arrived on the hour, which was when we were supposed to be done (and the time I had paid through). 2. Another bummer was that the leader just wasn't that fun. She was very sweet, but 3/4 of doing anything with a group of kids is selling it and making it silly and fun. We ended up jumping in and livening up the experience when it became clear the leader was, again, solely focused on moving us through. 3. The pizza dough was thick and completely frozen (we wanted a Frozen theme, not actual ice crystals on our dough), so it didn't cook completely through. Very few kids ate it, understandably. I wouldn't have either. And they didn't get to push the the dough around, like when you come individually, or cut it into the shape or anything fun that makes you feel like you're actually cooking. We ended up getting lunch for some of the kids after bc they were all hungry--not what I was expecting after paying so much and having a food themed party. 4. They made lemonade, which was a good project, the lemonade was blue to match the theme and each kid got a super cute little jar and straw, but half the kids didn't like lemonade and didn't want to drink it. They told the leader this before it was poured, but she poured them all cups anyway, without offering water or something else. Call me crazy, but if a kid says they don't want a super sugary drink, the last thing I'm going to do is make it their only option. But I guess getting water would have taken an extra 1.5 minutes, and after the coloring sheet episode, I should have known we couldn't spare that amount of time. 5. My daughter had a cake, which was 3-4x the size of a cupcake, but she wasn't given any silverware to cut it or eat it with. She tried her best to take a couple bites, leaning in pie-contest eating style, but wasn't succeeding, so I asked for a fork and knife to cut it with. The leader came back with one small plastic fork. You're name is 'foodie kids' and you can't even come up with a knife or actual silverware??? Come on. 6. My best friend wanted a cup of coffee. They charged her for that. And the leader was super adamant about the number of marshmallows each kid got to decorate their cupcake with. After paying so much, and being so thoroughly underwhelmed, being nickel-and-dimed was especially frustrating. If You're going to grab coloring sheets out of my kid's hand to avoid going even a minute late, you can at least give my friend a single cup of coffee and splurge on three extra marshmallows. My takeaway: This place is a good option for a family rainy day activity. We had fun when we came here on our own. but I would NOT do another party here or ever recommend it to a friend. If we would have done the same thing at our house, it would have cost half of the amount we paid. The food would have been edible. We would have been able to make it more fun, and we certainly wouldn't have had to rush through a special day like it was a timed race. read more

Barbara writes all the recipes for the weekly classes and camps, and they are truly health-conscious but still keep kids' tastes in mind. There isn't a better place in Austin for children to experience the joy of cooking in a fun and safe environment and there isn't a better group of people in Austin for them to learn from. Over the summer my niece (8) and nephew (5) attended one of their summer camp classes. As a chef in the city I was expecting them to come away with the general concept of some basic skills and hopefully a smile on their face. What they got from the incredible staff at Foodie Kids was so much more. After just a few minutes hearing them both chatter on about the tools they used, the techniques they learned, and how much they love Miss Maggie, it was very clear that what they are doing is something special. It's so rare for children to get experience in a trade like that from truly talented professionals in an environment that is both hands on and accessible to them at a young age. They learned about ingredients, processes, equipment etc. that they would never have access to in a home kitchen setup and they learned from a passionate chef with vast knowledge of her trade. It was clear just from discussing each session with the kids that Miss Maggie takes advantage of every teachable moment and engages the children in a way that gets them excited about working with food then takes that excitement and escalates it into hands on experience that they carry with them after the class. I love this place! My kiddos love the summer canps. (Actually just signed them up for 2016 summer camp session! Eek!) I love that each week the camps are in session, it is a different destination/theme. It's also fun browsing the store avidly finding 'Shark Tank' featured products. Definitely my favorite summer camp option I register my kids for! At last years summer camp that my kids attended, I was impressed beyond belief at this culinary center. I love that the class is instructed based on fresh, natural, and homemade ingredients! The camp has two age groups I believe, one younger and one 8-tweens year olds. I loved that the ages were split up, seems like a lot of kids knew each other from school! The camps are 9-12pm for youngsters or 1-4pm for 8-12 year olds, lasting Monday through Thursday. I found this to be a bang for my buck. Each student got a recipe book for each day's recipes, and brought home leftovers for me to taste! When my kids told me they made pasta from scratch and that would like to make it again for dinner I knew they enjoyed the instruction. My kids even ate hummus! (it was pink, naturally dyed with a beet) Sidenote-- I went to Barbara's open house at Foodie Kids this past Saturday! It was so much fun, and I was thoroughly impressed with the cookbooks she has written as well as the motto to cook with fresh ingredients! read more

My two boys, age 6 and 7, attended My First French Bakery camp. They had so much fun and asked to sign up for more camps there. Unfortunately, the summer is nearly over, and we have travel plans for the rest of the summer. The camp had two instructors and maybe two older kids as helpers. There were about 15 kids at the camp. The camp started at 9 and ended at noon, Monday to Thursday. The price is higher than other camps, especially only for three hours, but it is well-justified because the kids get to prepare and taste so many different recipes each day. I registered the kids online a few weeks prior to the start of the camp. The online registration was staightforward. Not much info regarding what to bring or what to expect. They don't really need anything. Everything is provided. At pickup on the first day, both kids asked to bring a water bottle instead of getting cups of water from the dispenser. Each morning, kids get dropped off, and parents sign them in. But then at pick up, there is really no formal sign out procedure. I made sure I arrived well before noon so that they would not wander off while others are being picked up and are not left unattended. They made and sampled quite a few dishes each day. Quiche, bechamel sauce, crepe, croque monsieur, ratatouilli, salad with dressing, beignet with chocolate sauce, baguette, macaron, apple tart are the ones I recall. At this age range, I don't expect intense kitchen instructions. My older son went to Central Market cooking camp before, and that was more demonstrations than hands on. At Foodie Kids, the instructors were friendly and patient. The kids were engaged and given enough hands on participation, which they enjoyed tremendously. On the last two days, they held a "bake sale" out front for charity. The kids had a lot of fun prepping and selling the food they help make and lemonades. I can see how parents may feel they they have to pay extra for the food the kids should be bringing home. But then, the proceeds go to a charity and the kids have fun while learning. I was very excited to send my Son to cooking camp. He loves cooking! Unfortunately we had a bad experience. I contacted the owner before writing this review and don't feel that she heard me or cared. To start I never received any information about the camp. I signed up months ago and then nothing. So I didn't know what to bring or what to expect. Upon arrival we were greeted by the "instructor", she didn't seem super friendly towards the parents or children. I felt uneasy leaving my son there (who is 7). I wrote my name on a check in sheet but wasn't really paid much attention to. When I arrived to pick him up (only a few short hours later... even though you're paying the same price as an all-day camp) my son and one other child were waiting up front. NO adults. Nobody cared or saw me walk out with my kid. There is NO check-out procedure. I walked around looking for somebody and saw a couple of adults in the kitchen area chatting and laughing. Nobody acknowledged me. So I left. And I never brought him back. You would think somebody would have noticed him missing and let me know. You would think somebody would've cared when he didn't show up for the rest of the camp. Nope. Never got a call or an email or anything. They just want your money. They don't seem to care about the quality of their staff or their lack of proper safety procedures. I reached out to owner later (when I finally had time after scrambling to find childcare last minute) and she apologized, and offered me "credit" to bring him back for another camp. She did not address my concern whatsoever. She did not refund me any of my money. She DID tell me that I should've told her sooner and that they are small business and they don't ID the parents at pick-up. That's scary since its not a childcare facility that sees the same parents for months on end and recognizes them. In fact, The girl who greeted me never even asked for my name and barely looked at me! Even if she would've been up front, she wouldn't have known who's mother I was. I declined her offer and stated the above reasons. She responded with "Appreciate your honesty" and that was it! Why would I risk taking him back there and especially now that summer is over? I feel ripped off and nervous that this place is responsible for children. read more

My son had his birthday party here this past weekend and I would give 10 stars if it were possible. We had a bit of a strange situation with the weather and ice on the roads, but Barbara and both Kelseys were AMAZING. I did not have to lift a finger. I did nothing! They handled every aspect of the party with a warm-hearted kindness that just cannot be taught. We met at the Women's Symphony League Red Haute Valentine Party and Children's Style Show -- Foodie Kids hosted a cupcake decorating booth and she let the kids be creative and artistic. Every single chid walked away happy. Love love love this wonderful business and encourage ALL ages to check it out - they have a retail cooking supplies store and an awesome drop-in, make-your-own snack counter called "The Makery" where kids come in anytime for a mini cooking lesson to make their own snacks. Our kids were forced to donate most of what they baked to a bake sale for FIT. they only got small bits to bring home or none at all. The parents were expected to buy what they had already paid to make. Some of the recipes were good, but many were dubious, like "ice cream" made with sweetened condensed milk and cool whip and loads of artificial flavor. I can't begin to express how sad I am to give such a negative review. I came here when it had newly opened with my oldest daughter who is now seven. So much has changed in the past four years and unfortunately, not for the better. When we used to come, they only offered cupcakes to decorate. Although, now there is a variety of items to choose from, the experience was far from wonderful. Both of my daughters chose to make the mini cakes. The girl working had terrible customer service and didn't even greet us upon arrival! There was only one other family there when we arrived and they were finishing up. It was such a boring experience in comparison to both Kaley and Barbara's charming personalities. The girl didn't help them or converse with them AT ALL! My poor daughter tried to talk and she gave one word answers. The girl kept going to the back and even my daughter said she didn't seem very friendly. Maybe she was having a bad day but to our sadness, it literally ruined our experience. I am so disappointed with what used to be one of our favorites treats. Not to mention, now it costs $10.99 per item when it used to around $5, if I remember correctly. We will always cherish our previous memories but I'm sad to say, I think it will be our last time ever going. read more

We had a wonderful experience celebrating our daughters birthday at Foodie Kids. All the kids were super excited to be there and the staff encouraged them in every cooking activity! Our little one was so happy with her unicorn themed party, the cake and cupcakes were delicious, and of course they all loved decorating their own cupcake! We booked the party room for the adults as well since the children were younger, the moms enjoyed socializing over a fruit and cheese platter and mini cupcakes. I don't write many reviews, but Foodie Kids is amazing. My 5 year old has been in a cooking class here all semester. She has done many other extracurricular activities over the years, and her cooking class at Foodie Kids is the ONLY one that she is consistently excited to go to. The owners and staff obviously love what they do and are so warm and fun with the kids. The semester is nearly over and she still gets excited when it's "cooking class day" and has asked to sign up again in the spring. Today, we hosted her 6th birthday party here. She chose the Rainbow Unicorn theme and I think it was my favorite kid party ever. The kids were engaged, creating, and having fun the whole time and there were some really cute touches for the birthday girl to make her feel special on her big day (a personalized apron that all of the party guests signed, the opportunity to walk into the "teacher area" and make the themed birthday punch for the group, and a take home book of colored pages from her guests). Everything the kids made was adorable and they were offered the option to wrap up anything they preferred to take to eat at home. I think the price is totally fair considering I didn't have to worry about anything except party favors (and they do offer those too, if you so choose). For the price of the party, Foodie Kids provides all of the food and cupcakes (a small cake for the birthday child), decor and just an overall great experience. My daughters have participated in Foodie Kids afternoon summer camps in the past and have had "so-so" experiences. The camps are extremely over-priced and the instructors are average -- surprisingly not that enthusiastic or excited about spending time with young people. For this summer of 2016, I signed up one daughter for one week of camp and then had to cancel because she would not be in the state of Texas during the week I had enrolled her in (nor for any of the remaining weeks of the summer) -- so physically UNABLE to attend. I explained this situation several times to Foodie Kids' "customer service" person, Shawnee, but she would not budge on refunding any portion of my $275 enrollment fee. Profits over customer satisfaction, clearly. This is one of the highest priced camps in Austin, on a per-hour basis, and for that reason, I would expect the company to be more flexible when a camper simply cannot attend. Do not sign up for anything with this business unless you are prepared to spend, and potentially, lose, a lot of money. read more
