We spent one night doing cooking class with SilverWhisk. The venue was a fancy $2.4M house with a pool. It looked right out of Vogue and amazing. By the time we arrived, the appetizers (Tuna crackers) and Sangria were already set up (delicious) and the chefs were preparing for the cooking session. The whole session was very organized and the staff were very friendly. While many of us are not good at the cooking, we received great instruction and the end result turned out to be great! Hi! We had a corporate team building activity with 11 people! We had SO MUCH FUN! First off the space was GORGEOUS! Our Chefs (Chef Jerry and Chef Priscilla) were SO kind, patient, fun, and organized! The meals we made were awesome and something that we could all make at home, not "too fancy" where we'd have to go to a special store to get, but also just the right amount of "newness" for some of us that might not try on our own at home...like handmade pasta or from scratch chocolate mousse. We had two teams. One team took Italian and made a handmade Bolognese pasta dish. The second team cooked a Mexican Chicken and Rice dish. Both teams prepared a dessert as well. It was the most fun most people have had at a corporate event! *So much better than a stuffy overpriced steak dinner!* I could see this being a great way to start a bachelorette party, friend gathering, family reunion, birthday party, date night with other couples, etc.! Going to cooking classes is one of my favorite things to do with my husband (despite the fact that he's often MUCH better than me at difficult, detail oriented recipes) Most of the experience I have with cooking classes has to do with the Wholefoods classes at the Lamar culinary center- so most of my expectations were set from those events. I think one of the things that surprised me is that this is not a completely hands on course. My husband and I went to a class specializing in soufflés - and most of the class involved the instructor showing us what to do and letting us taste the finished results. Though she did let us complete some of the easier recipes, it seemed as though she was rushing through everything else and didn't trust us to do the more complicated recipes for ourselves. If you're familiar with the film Ratatouille, you know that Chef Gusteau's prime belief was that anyone could cook. I truly believe that the instructors here didn't really follow that philosophy. I was hoping I could at least use my notes to help me recreate the recipes in the future - but unfortunately, I was never emailed the recipes after the class as was promised, which was a bit disappointing. Also, if you're into wine - it's important to note that you are charged for glasses of wine if you want to sip some during class, while classes elsewhere tend to include complimentary wine. Personally, I'd be willing to try Silver Whisk again - but I definitely feel that the classes here are designed to be more of an event you go to, rather than something you learn from. read more

My wife and I attended the Kitchen Basics class here and it was an OK experience. The "basics" class is super basic... like no joke. If you've ever cracked an egg by yourself before, then this class is probably too basic for you. But still, we did manage to learn a few things here and there, like the proper way to handle kale. As other reviewers have mentioned, just keep in mind that this is more of a "participation" class than a "learning" class. CHEF: I don't know what to make of Chef Myrna. She was wearing a cupcake sweater and a pair of bright pink tennis shoes. She didn't look like a real chef and she barely did any cooking or demoed any cooking skills. She just kept making pop culture references to Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears. I get what she's doing -- reference to weird events is one of the best ways to memorize technical contents -- but her jokes were simply not to our taste. I mean I know her credentials as a chef but dressing appropriately in a kitchen is also part of being a good chef IMO. CLASS: We didn't do that much cooking. Appetizer involved dicing vegetables and sauteing them together (the most involved dish). Entree involved rubbing a piece of meat with dijon mustard. Dessert involved whisking together milk, eggs, and sugar. I'm not simplifying anything. These are literally the only "tasks" we had to do. For the rest of the time, you can purchase glasses of wine to sip on then. Even though we didn't do much work, the food was actually quite tasty (especially the appetizer soup). Btw, the knives they give us were some of the dullest knives I've ever used. Dull knives = more chance of cutting yourself. ORGANIZATION: This is probably their biggest problem. When I called in to make the reservation, I was told that each class is usually about 6-8 people and that they want to keep the class size down to provide a more personal experience. Our class had 26 people (wow!) and I think their max capacity was 24 (4 groups of 6). They also didn't seem to have ANY IDEA of how many people they were expecting. People just keep coming in and they didn't even have enough ingredients ready. The saddest part is that our group didn't even get to use a silver whisk! We got this tiny pink whisk that looked like it came from a kid's play kit =( Overall, it was a fun date for my wife and I on a Saturday afternoon. We didn't learn much but at least the food tasted good. It would be interesting to try out one of their more advanced classes. We received this class as a Groupon gift and I would recommend others to use Groupon as well. We would have felt ripped off if we had paid full price for this class. P.S. On this occasion, it was a Valentines Day couples cooking class planned for just a small group of couples, maybe 3-4, but as things go, not everyone is always committed, so on this occasion it was me and my special girl. Instead of actually having to cook, which I love to do also, both Chef Jake and Myrna hosted us with a 5 course dinner. What was an added highlight this night was that we had the pleasure to also enjoy the meal and company of their parents. All the ingredients this night were all fresh and procured the same day as is their policy in doing these classes or hosting dinner parties and you can bring you own wine or beverage (s) of choice. The 5 course meal started with: 1st course: a nice clam chowder soup, nice chunky pieces smooth and silky but could have had just a touch more of a seafood taste to it. I would give 4 out of 5 stars. 2nd course: tossed green salad, with carmalized onions and pecans (I think), goat cheese. There were a few other little accoutrements, but what really enhanced this salad was the dressing. I want to say it was some raspberry vinaigarette. I'd give that salad 4 of 5 stars. 3rd course: crab cakes, which these crab cakes probably one the best I've had. They had a good balance of crab, but instead of using bread crumbs or lots of mayo the cooked or folded in sauteed small diced vegetables. It all came together perfectly and had a wonderful roumalade sauce. I'd give this 5+ out of 5 stars. 4th course: Filet mignon. The filet was perfectly seared with their own dry spice and cooked medium rare. The mashed potatoes where hand whipped and you could taste the potato and not overwhelmed with other things you find in restaurants and of course the dish accompanied with asparagus. This is nothing new you would find anywhere else, but they perfectly executed it and that's what matters. Definitely a 5 of 5 star dish. 5th course: Last but not least for desert were dipped strawberries in freshly made chocolate. What was nice about this was it was a perfect finish or chaser if you will to all the other dishes. Never expected a cooking class could be so much fun. As part of a corporate team building event, I attended an Iron Chef Challenge cooking class at Silver Whisk. We divided into two teams each led by the head chefs. Outstanding -Service of the staff and their personalities -The amount of fun we had as a team -Of course, the food (pan seared asian salmon over fried rice noodles and a brocolette bell pepper stir fry; other team made spicy meatball gyros; nutella crepes and caramelized apple a la mode for desserts) -The interior of the kitchen -The cooking aprons So-so -Would have liked slightly more complex foods to make cooking more of a challenge; though cooking a salmon is difficult Not so good -Nothing here A side note: being the klutz that I sometimes am, I sliced into my finger while dicing apples. The head chef took me aside, bandaged me, made sure the station was sanitized, and really made me feel at ease. He was very intelligent and educated us on some fun food facts. We were taught how to make French crepes. Residents got the opportunity to learn and make their own crepes. Get in touch with your culinary side with a cooking class! I gave my hubby/me a class ('Southern Food" with Jake G) using a Groupon and was not disappointed. Fabulous night enjoying meeting new people, learning cooking techniques and tips and some hands-on experience (they do 90% of the work and walk you through it, letting you do the 10% to get the idea). Everyone seemed to enjoy the leisurely class and a week later we were emailed recipes so we can become brilliant chefs at home! Move over, Julia Childs. This is a great way to spend an evening that will reap benefits for a long time if you listen/learn. For those who have a babysitter (we didn't), just realize that sometimes things don't go to plan despite your best efforts so although our class was longer than 7-9 (through no fault of their own), we loved every minute of it! The logistical execution for our events was a NIGHTMARE. So many things went wrong. We booked them for virtual classes on back to back nights, and at booking they assured me they had the virtual classes down to a science. They set the expectation that the food would be delivered in "really nice" baskets - it came in a gift bag and was pre-portioned on disposable paper plates. Night one they sent out the Zoom link for and started earlier than the contracted start time. Night two, I got a call from an attendee over an hour after they told us the baskets would be delivered saying it had not arrived (this is just over an hour before the class was due to start, mind you). Come to find out - the last basket wouldn't arrive until 30-45 mins after the scheduled start time, so we had to push back the class. We were expecting and certainly paid for a luxury experience and that was just NOT delivered on. These challenges reflected poorly on me, who pushed hard to book this company on a recommendation, and on our team as this was meant to be a fun appreciation event for VIPs. We actually held a non-VIP virtual cooking class the week before that was 1/6th of the cost and was a better experience overall by FAR. I am giving 2 stars here instead of 1 because they are doing some things to try to make it right, and I found Chef Jake to be engaging and knowledgeable in the class I attended. I definitely learned some things. The food was delicious. There were some challenges with pacing in the first night and he did a great job of adjusting that the second night. I can't, however, in good conscious, give higher than 2 stars or recommend them because of everything that went wrong. I have been planning client events in Houston for 9 years and have never had such a terrible experience. I had hoped to work with them again in 2021, but we will definitely not be hiring them again. read more

I don't want to write a book so I'll just summarize my experiences with these guys. Hard to get a hold of - we had a credit that we tried to use for an entire year and had numerous phone calls and emails ignored, they are not good at following up. It was only after sending a last ditch effort email where I told them I was going to review them (and mention being ignored) that Jake got back to us and helped us use our credit. subpar ingredients - when we finally did get into a class we noticed a lot of non organic ingredients being used, pretty disappointing since the cost of class was around 80 each. We are pretty strict about what we eat at home so this was a surprise. FOOD POISONING - I'm not making this up. I spent 3-4 days after the class sicker than I've been in a while. Both ends, that's all I'm saying. I remember asking where they got the scallops we were eating but it was busy and I didn't get a solid answer. I'd guess they were NOT wild caught because I eat scallops all the time with no problems. overbearing owner - I appreciate that she's a single mother and she's making her dreams come true with this shop but the other reviews are right (read them! I wish I had) - she needs to tone it down. She totally overshadowed a very kind and interesting Benjamin Burke. We showed up to the class to listen to him and not all of her crass jokes. As someone who cooks quite a bit, I thought she detracted (A LOT) from the learning experience with her antics. terrible customer service - just take a look at some of the attacks these guys foist on any reviews they don't like. They treat people, except their friends and people who are googly eyed for them, very poorly. You can tell a lot about people by how they handle their critics. And with that, I will await my lashing. Wish I had more positive things to say. OH YES... One more thing... Once we were certain I was dealing with food poisoning my girlfriend contacted them. All they did was send a lengthy response telling us how no one had ever complained about the quality of their ingredients. Followed by a completely uncaring and unsympathetic "What do you want???" - we didn't want anything guys, just wanted to make sure no one else had gotten sick too. Once upon a time, about six months ago, I was a Match member. I decided to do the Silver Whisk as a Match event. Oddly enough, they held up their end of the bargain rather well. There were some wonderful, charming women there. The actual event did not turn out that great. Everything was rushed. The butternut squash soup and mashed potatoes (if I recall) were precooked before we got there. We "made" bread pudding. As in, we ripped a loaf of french bread apart. Almost everything else was done for us again. The only real "cooking" involved was pan-frying fish, which is something of an idiot-proof exercise. My lovely partner and I went *crazy* and used less oil than recommended. Health consciousness is sexy! Here's the real problem - we were promised that e-mails would be sent out with the recipes of the precooked food. Maybe the e-mails were sent, maybe not. But I never got them and they've ignored my e-mails to get the recipes. It's more a matter of principle - I can find those recipes anywhere but they promised it and didn't deliver. The other part was the wine. It was fantastic. But there's a certain sleaziness in me and everyone else just walking in, being asked "Would you prefer red or white wine with your meal? Your glass is empty, let me top it off!" and then being billed $15 or more per glass. I even heard a couple of people complaining about it. I would have gladly felt more comfortable paying it if it were clear up front what is and is not included - it's not like I wouldn't have bought the wine in my attempts to impress the women. She constantly joked about firing her assistants. As for the class, it was more of a participation than a class. I didn't really learn anything. It's been two months since our visit to Silver Whisk and we still have not received the recipes for our dinner - recipes the chef said we would get via email as we were all sitting down. A follow up email request has also been ignored. Please either follow through with your customers within 24 hours of their class, or don't mention you will send recipes. That being said, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was fun and the staff was friendly and attentive. Silver Whisk is more like a participatory dinner than a school. You do get to (if you wish) participate in cooking some of the dishes. If you want to sit back and watch others do the work it is relaxed and that is fine. As others have mentioned out first course was already prepared for us. Fine by us because we were starved and it was nice to be eating within a few minutes of arrival. Bonus points for thoughtfulness, but the points get subtracted back since we never were informed (darn those missing recipes) how to prepare the dish. Most of the slicing and dicing prep work is done by the staff before the students arrive, which is fine. I think most people attending a class like this know how to slice veggies and such. The class part is the assembling of the dish and cooking it on the stove top. Participatory enough to be fun without overly challenging those who are timid. The wine selections were good - we ordered a bottle upon arrival. Yes you do of course pay for alcohol. I am surprised people are surprised about that. Silver Whisk is worth a visit for a different type of dining date, especially for those who like to cook together or are looking for a 'get to know' you first date. read more

I took a cupcake decorating class at the Silver Whisk today. The class was fun, informative, and packed with tips, tricks, and techniques, as well as plenty of inspiration for future cooking endeavors. It was a fabulous group in attendance, and everyone shared various cooking experiences and techniques. Chef Myrna has a big personality, with a variety of experience and knowledge and most importantly is an excellent teacher. I would recommend her classes. The facility is just gorgeous, and there is an awesome kitchen store (Faraday's) with friendly/welcoming staff in the same shopping complex (love kitchen shops and this is a good one). It may be a bit of a drive for some, but it is a scenic one, and the toll road makes it a snap (just watch your speed). read more

My company had a personal Iron Chef Competition where we competed with two teams, one doing Texan cuisine and one doing San Franciscan Thai fusion. I'm not going to lie. I am an excellent cook and probably don't need to be taking cooking classes. I own an extremely high end range and have collected some cooking equipment that is in the extreme high quality range. That being said, I have an addiction to curiosity, which as we all know can sure get you into trouble sometime. I took the basic class with a co-worker of mine, just to see what the whole thing is about and really had a good time. Someone else here mentioned the aprons and they really are great. We took a lot of Instragrams of each other and got a ton of likes. The meal we prepared was simple, but fun. I was glad there wasn't a big time culinary attitude from the staff - like other places in town which will remain nameless. They allowed us to chop the vegetables ourselves and even cut raw meat, which is sometimes prohibited in other venues. All in all, an excellent time. I only wish they would try to incorporate a "dog night" in the future where you are free to bring your pets. I think this could be fun and bring a lot of people in who have a hard time finding pet sitters. read more

While getting set up for our class there was a bit of confusion and I slipped through the cracks a few times with getting into a class. An apology was made and assured it wouldn't happen again so I finally was assured by the owner that I was in a class. So I was a bit unsure when arriving seeing how I didn't get the best first impression with scheduling of classes. I will say Chef Myrna and her staff made me forget all those issues and we had a blast. Their professionalism, fun attitude and laid back atmosphere made me feel at home. My husband and I attended the "Simply Tapas" night. We sat at a table with 2 other ladies and this was our cooking group. We ended up making coconut and ginger mussels, eggplant cannelloni, and bananas foster nutella crepes. They made orange short ribs ahead of time for us. We have a blast! Yes, it was mainly participatory with all of the ingredients cut and prepared for us. However, my husband and I cook all the time and we enjoyed just cooking and eating--no clean up or shopping! What a great time! My boyfriend and I decided to try out Silver Whisk to get a more intimate cooking class environment. Chef Myrna sure did deliver! We walked out of the class feeling so confident about cooking the dishes on our own that we had made that evening. I would definitely recommend taking one of her classes. What I find most interesting about these yelp reviews is the ability of Silver Whisk to respond so promptly. I've been trying to get the recipes from our December 12th cooking class and have yet to receive anything. After waiting almost three weeks I emailed Jake and was told that I would be receiving them that following Monday. Monday came and went and I sent another email, letting him know that I wanted to cook these recipes for my NYE party. I have yet to hear a response. The funny part is during our cooking class another patron was writing down very precise instructions. When I told her that they are supposed to e-mail the recipe list, she laughed and informed me that this happened to her before and it was just better for her to write them down. At the end of class we overheard Jake asking for her instructions. I'm not sure if he was joking or not, but from what I gather from my personal experience, it may not have been a joke (which is super disorganized for a cooking school!) The actual class was really fun. My boyfriend and I and another couple had a great time. My wife and I had a sprint at work and needed meals cooked for us so when we got home late we could just throw the food in the oven to heat it up and eat before hitting the sack. I had never had a private chef before, so this was a new experience. Chef Myrna customized our menu to our diet and preferences and delivered the food every Monday morning. Had no idea this place was so close by! We discovered Silver Whisk via a Groupon for a cooking class. We used it on the "Rock 'n Roll Sushi class with Jake". It was a nice small setting with about 14-16 ppl. It was a unique and fun date night with hubby. They had a musician playing live music, and he was really good (although I wouldn't call it Rock 'n Roll). The pace of the class was great, but the instructors seemed to be talking over each other at times. It was hands on the entire time. I felt like we learned a new kitchen skill that we could replicate at home. The only constructive feedback is that they could have the counter stations better prepared up front, so that the volunteer/aids weren't scrambling the entire time. (I felt bad we were ALL asking for things constantly and the two helpers never slowed down.) And, don't forget ask for a kitchen towel for this class up front - you'll be needing to wipe your hands frequently, and napkins stick to your sticky hands from the rice. I would return and check out another class - it was a fun environment. (Heads up - the wine is really expensive, not a wide range of pricing - extra revenue obviously comes from this, as they are constantly asking if you want more wine.) read more

I have been sampling Chef Myrna's recipes for awhile now, and I'm always amazed at the combination of flavors she creates. Today I had Asian Chicken salad for example. Sounds simple, you've probably had it before, but her recipe tastes so much better. I don't know why and I can't explain it, she just knows how to craft perfect recipes. Great cooking school, dinner and instruction provided.check the web site, realize the menu you're fixing to make will be your dinner, doesn't get much better. try some of the creole classes or hands on ones that help technique. get out of you comfort zone amd try something new. read more

My experience at silver whisk occurred a while ago, so things may have changed since then. With that said, I was disappointed that the class was not interactive. Most of the dishes were already half prepared so we did not really get to "learn" how to cook them. It was more cut this tomato and put it in the pot or mix this bowl which the ingredients have already been put in. I have taken cooking classes at other places and they were much more interactive, cooking the dishes from scratch. My group felt a bit rushed, it was not the warm welcome atmosphere we were looking for. Lastly, like several of the customers, I never received the recipes form the class. My time at Silver Whisk was interesting. The food was mediocre at best, I could have spent less money going to a restaurant and not having to deal with the long wait and awkward staff. They offer a live musician who plays during the event, which was the only good experience we had, thank you Tyler Stanfield music! I got your CD. My wife and I wish silver whisk would disappear from our memories of dates, but it will probably keep us from making the same mistake again. read more
