I was taken to the ER for a chronic condition I have and was treated accordingly, and that all went as well as could be expected. The problems started when I was discharged, around 7:30 p.m., and told that a cab was on the way to take me home, courtesy of Medicaid. So I sat down in the lobby and waited. And waited. And waited and waited and waited... for HOURS. When I asked if anyone knew what was going on, the staff at the ER desk were indifferent at best. Some even acted like I was a being nuisance, but I did not ask to be stranded at the hospital. They told me very nonchalantly that sometimes people had to wait all night for a cab. If they had bothered to tell me that in the first place, I could have taken the bus and been home by 9:00. But instead I was given a courtesy ride home by the police, past 2:00 a.m., having never seen a cab, and was too exhausted to go to work in the morning. I wish I had never gone to the ER. It was SO not worth all that. Then I noticed the false information on my discharge papers, stating that I was seen for a condition that I don't even have. I spoke to a patient representative who wouldn't tell me why or even ask the doctor to call me. So I filed a grievance and the hospital responded with a totally impersonal, robotic form letter. NOT good enough after lying on my discharge papers AND costing me a day's pay. So I wrote them another letter. That resulted in a phone call from a patient representative who really did seem to care. She asked what she could do to help resolve the issues and I believe she actually did do what she could. I finally did get a call from the ER doctor, who said the wrong information shouldn't have been on my discharge papers (you think?) but couldn't explain why it was there. And in the end I received the same disinterested, LAME form letter. I may as well have voiced my concerns to a brick wall. Apparently by state law I have to submit a request form to have my record changed, and IF a doctor agrees, it will be changed. And even then, the false information will still be there with a note about the amendment. I have to say I think it is absolute B.S. that a doctor can be allowed by law to keep a LIE on someone's medical record. (I WILL be speaking to an attorney about this.) None of my concerns were resolved and with the exception of one or two people, they couldn't have cared less. For the most part they seem to have no conscience, and for an institution that is in the business of caring for people, that is really disturbing. The way they handle grievances is pathetic and downright insulting. Patients deserve MUCH better than that. It nauseates me that BCH is the closest hospital to where I live. I hope I'm out of town if I ever have to go the ER again. read more

This is the pretty hospital. Lovely lounge, nice physician offices and beautiful campus. If you really find yourself in a pickle though, I would recommend going to a different hospital as this one isn't for serious trauma or tricky medical conditions. read more

If you have a child, don't take them to the ER. Go to Children's hospital in Aurora or Broomfield. They aren't set up to see children. I took my 2 year old with a case of Croup to the ER. They gave here the recommended treatment, but then stated that they wanted to "observe" her - but didn't have the room to keep her. So, they told us that we need to go, by ambulance, to Aurora's Children's Hospital. The ambulance ride from Boulder to Aurora cost $5080. That's right, that is more than it would cost my entire family to fly roundtrip to China. All in all, the hospital seemed more interested in racking up fees than actually providing effective treatment. In fact, this 12 hours of croup cost more than the 2 day hospital stay to birth the child. read more

So we've waited over five weeks to receive the records for our newborn and we've yet to receive it. We've talked to at least three people about the records mix up. I still feel super uneasy that the mentally ill patient who just got out of prison whose records we received could have received our newborn son's records with our address, name, etc even though they tried assured me that they didn't send anything to the gentleman. I hope they notify that gentleman we received his records and admit to the screw up on their end to him. Lord knows, I would want to know. read more

Nurses great. Administrative staff terrible. After 4 days ( asked 3 times to see her) never once saw case worker who was to inform us of transition issues for rehab for 92 year old mother. As result we had to search ourselves and made wrong decision if she can not be rehabbed; a likely outcome. She did call after we made decision and offered nothing more than sending paperwork; no advice. Staff responsible for discharge never communicated with us. Spent 8 hrs waiting for discharge. Nurse did tell us at 2 pm that transport would be here at 3:30p. Too late for Primary staff at new facility to orient us and communicate unique issues. Would not come here again due to lack of communication. They just sit at their desks! read more

This is specifically about lab work charges at BCH. The hospital services are fine but expect the lab to charge an enormous amount. *If* you have insurance the lab will accept, no kidding, 12%. I've seen this many times over the past ten years, most recently for routine blood work in October. BCH lab services charged $718.00, the lab accepted the insurance contract rate of $82.35, and I owed $0.00. So if you aren't insured you can expect to negotiate your BCH lab bill down by ~85%. Sort'a like buying a used car from a disreputable dealer. The car is fine, but you can't trust anything the salesman says. read more

My significant other had heart surgery here this week. Everyone on staff has been excellent, supportive, professional and thorough in monitoring and addressing his needs. Every Secretary, volunteer, nurse, PA, NP, respiratory staff, and the physicians have all been wonderful. They've explained care and procedures as well as follow up information in a manner we could both understand. I can't put into words how grateful I am for how above and beyond the care and support has been. The gardens, labyrinth and art have been soothing as we've gone from ICU to West unit. I should have posted this ages ago but I'm not really a person that reviews often. This hospital saved my husbands life. We were in Boulder for a friends wedding when my husband was taken to the ER. They rushed him to emergency surgery and he was in the ICU for the following 2 months. During that horrible time the hospital staff was very helpful and kind. They helped me find a hotel to stay in and made sure I could navigate through this. The surgeon and doctors did rounds every morning to discuss his case, answer my questions, and make sure he was getting the care he needed. The nursing staff was wonderful and attentive. My questions were answered and I was heard through all of this. Let's face it- our country's medical system is not perfect and there are always issues, however, the doctors, nurses, and supporting staff in the ICU at Boulder Community are people I will remember for the rest of my life for their expertise, attention, and care. The hospital was beautiful as well. I spent the days with him in his room and taking breaks walking the open meadow and creek behind the hospital. In September it will be 2 years and my husband is healthier then ever! I could not be more thankful for Boulder Community. read more

This place is ok... However I went to see a surgeon because I get numbness in my arms, and he refused even to look at or touch me because I was too young... I wish he had made sure nothing was wrong. Felt like a waste of my time. I also had issues with being told my insurance was taken when it wasn't and just general mistakes. Horrible experience. I came in in extreme back and abdominal pain, which was reiterated over and over. They ran a CT scan, blood test, ultra sound, and urine test and found nothing. One day later went to a local doctor in my area did a quick urine sample and found several kidney stones. How did the ER miss that going through that many tests keeping me there for hours? I was not taken seriously- just wanted the care that I deserve. read more

My son broke his arm today, and I just have to write a review about how incredible the ER was. Especially a nurse named Chris (male) was amazing, and so great with kids. They got us in quickly and treated him so well. Everyone on staff was super nice and sympathetic. I also gave birth to my daughter here in 2012 and had an awesome experience in the maternity ward. If you are admitted it is very important that you ask each MD or provider if they are in network with your insurance. You cannot assume if your hospital is in network that the consultations that you have will be in network. There is legislation at the state and federal level working on this, making it illegal to do this to patients. Unfortunately, BCH as well as the MD billing office were not very sympathetic or willing to help me when I received the "surprise bill" of approximately a $1000 for a 20 minute consult. I was referred to Rocky Mountain Cardiology @ Boulder Community Hospital @ 4743 Arapahoe. When I made the appointment, the scheduling person was rather gruff, saying that the Dr I was seeing had to have his name circled (the referring physician had only made a check mark = not good enough). I almost didn't go w/ the appointment, and in the end, I wish I had trusted my instincts. At the time of my appointment, I went to BCH's Araphahoe campus, and it was a HUGE construction mess with very poor temporary signage (i.e. none). A traffic nightmare. The parking garage had been repainted without removing the old paint or the handicap symbols, so it wasn't clear what spots were disabled and which were not. Finally found a parking spot, but no one at the hospital campus seemed to know where Rocky Mountain Cardiology was! Finally, figured out that Rocky Mountain Cardiology changed its name to Boulder Heart, and I managed to find the office. Very plush. They had a sign that said something like "If you've been waiting for 15 minutes for your appointment, please check in" but nowhere to actually check in. I waited 30 minutes without being acknowledged, so I left. In the end, not worth the heart attack over the stress! :) In my opinion, BCH and its partners demonstrate how NOT to run a medical facility. read more

This used to be a wonderful hospital when they were maternity and pediatrics only. I recently had back surgery there and the nursing care was not very attentive. I had to put on my call light to help with using the restroom and getting Ina no out of bed. It would take over 30 minutes for someone to help. I often felt that I was forgotten about. read more

No stars if possible. Horrible Horrible treatment. Adm staff started yelling at me right at admission and kept on all thru my surgical stay. Adm staff consists of way past retirement age women who are only there for tenure. They have no skills in patient assistance. They are mean. And vindictive. After major neck surgery for disk problems, I was extremely sick. My surgeon was nowhere to be found. When she did appear, she handed me a printout of RISKS OF MY SURGERY with no help for my serious intubation vocal chord, pain issues. She had no bedside manner and no compassion. I had to call Medicare to receive soft gluten free foods. Mucous kept choking me and I could not speak. Surgeon just left me to fend for self. Nursing staff also avoided me and told me "to take care of myself." I had no nursing care. When I had my first solid food, I needed water to swallow. I was refused WATER. Try after try and even a health aide I had hired could not get me WATER to swallow the food. The meal went to waste. The staff called a security guards to my room. A charge nurse came in and yelled at me "You're not sick, you're standing up!" I managed to back her out of my room saying, "Get out Get out Get out. They had turned my meal into a security issue at 73 years of age. The security guards stood by and allowed me to throw the charge nurse out of my room and then with extreme compassion offered me a cup of coffee. The only compassion came from the security guards. I called my surgeon's number and a woman whom I did not know yelled at me "You did not have to....." She would not put my surgeon on the line nor allow me any contact with her. She was a behind the scenes office manager for 30 years who attacked me verbally when I called for help. I had no idea this woman even worked with my surgeon. Hours later, one nice staff or nursing person arrived. She APOLOGIZED FOR my being denied WATER to eat my meal. Too little too late. I was actually starving. In a gesture of understanding this person brought me three pitchers of WATER to have and to keep for my trouble. FIND ANOTHER REPUTABLE HOSPITAL FOR ANY SURGERY OR ER. I found out that this hospital has offices throughout Boulder and I have refused to patronize any of them due to the worst possible experiences of any hospital I ever had. YOU WILL BE TREATED LIKE A VICTIM AND PERPETRATOR FOR EXPECTING ADEQUATE CARE, CONCERN, COMPASSION, AND HUMAN DECENCY. read more

If I could rate in the negatives I would do so. short story: shortly after surgery for a brain tumor on 12/20/16, while hospitalize I "inadvertently" ended up with a ruptured stomach, lost 30% of my stomach. Also received huge corneal abrasion which has left me with impaired vision in my left eye, this was caused by hospital doctors & nurses applying gauze pads being directly to my eye. I was supposed to go for surgery on 12/20/16 and be out 4 or 5 days later. Almost died on 12/26/16 due to the stomach being torn in half and ended finally being discharged on 1/23/17, 32 day after I checked in on 12/20/16. All told the brain surgery has been the least of the issues, all the other medical issues that happened ended up being the worst of the entire situation. It's been advised in consultation by the doctors at UCH/Anschutz that if standard practice of monitoring inputs and outputs had been followed by BCH the stomach rupture should have been averted. (FYI, I finished my treatments at UCH/Anschutz). Listening to the patient would have been beneficial, BCH should send their entire staff to training develop effective listening & communication skills. I had lung surgery at this hospital at the beginning of April. I was a little worried, based on some of the reviews I saw. I can honestly say that I never saw any evidence of the discourtesy described. Every admin person, every nurse, every doctor I encountered (and there were MANY) treated me with the utmost respect and kindness. They were efficient and knowledgeable in my care and treated me wonderfully. And while this doesn't matter with regard to care, the hospital is very new and a lovely facility. Last year I had occasion to go to the Foothills ER 3 times.....twice for accidents caused by my 85-pound dog. I was a mess both times, and both times was fortunate to get Brad for my nurse. He's professional, personable, funny, attentive, and made me feel comfortable in an uncomfortable setting. My last trip to the ER was due to a medical condition, and when I walked in, Brad just looked at me and said, 'Room 4'. Yes, I was blessed to get him a third time. The nurse was very attentive and concerned about my comfort, and the doctor gave me all the information and options necessary so I could make educated decisions. I have lived in the Boulder, Colorado area for nearly 20 years and would like to share my experience in choosing a primary care physician, as it relates to one aspect of the selection process. If at all possible, choose a doctor in private practice, including those at the Boulder Medical Center. Avoid those who are employees of the Boulder Community Hospital. They may be excellent physicians, but in my experience, the attitude of the support staff is atrocious - attitudes that would not be tolerated by physicians in private practice, empowered to freely hire and fire members of their staff. When I relayed my frustration to a hospital doctor, she acknowledged the problem and confided in me that hospitals are under increasing pressure from both insurance companies and government to cut costs. She felt that reimbursements were not adequate to support the dismissal of marginal support staff, with the expectations of finding a more conscientious replacement. My experience supports that doctor's conclusion. I originally selected my internist, Dr. Benjamin Keidan, when he was in private practice. He is a good doctor and there were no problems before he joined Boulder Community Hospital. My contact with the hospital has been infrequent - limited primarily to an annual physical and once/year renewal of prescriptions. This is a partial list of difficulties I have encountered in the most recent half dozen contacts with the Internal Medicine department at the Boulder hospital: - On two occasions, receiving a prescription for another patient, while my prescription was, apparently, mailed to someone else (The most recent was in May 2009). - Wrong prescription dosage or quantity (2009 and again in September 2011). In the latest incident, the pharmacy faxed Boulder Internal Medicine twice, for clarification, and telephoned them at least once. I called the hospital four times over a four day period requesting that they respond to the pharmacy. After a week, the pharmacy notified me that the order had been canceled, since the hospital never responded to their contact. I have been taking the medication for several years. There was no reason for the original error, which was then compounded by a group unwilling/unable to correct their mistake. After one week of phone calls and aggravation, the hospital finally did find time to fax a correction to "the pharmacy" (after my 4th call). Still no medication. Three days later, I found out why: They faxed the wrong pharmacy (The date that the wrong pharmacy was contacted coincides with the date of my fourth call). - Inability to contact the Internal Medicine group for nearly a week for the scheduling of an annual physical. The Problem: A new hire never replaced the after-hours recording with the one for daytime scheduling, prescription renewal, and general inquiries. Neither did she listen to the messages left by "evening" callers, throughout the week, who were attempting to contact Internal Medicine. I have never experienced this level of extended neglect in a private practice. These Boulder Community Hospital problems should be taken into account when selecting a physician in the Boulder, Colorado area. read more

I have no words. I'm writing this review so late, but oh well. I was in and out of several different hospitals with my mom. This hospital should honestly be the bar that is set for every other hospital in the nation. I work in the medical field and I can't describe what an inspiration every, single staff member was to me...and I'm very, very picky. They are so ahead of their time, and genuinely caring. I was able to finally spend the night at home while my mom was there, rather than feel the need to sleep on the chair beside her every night because I was worried that someone would make a mistake. I genuinely trusted these people with the life of the most important person to me, and I never had a second thought. Every time my mom had to go to the hospital, she volunteered to take the time to go all the way here from Denver instead of the closest hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Meditz and Dr. Updike. The nursing staff have mostly been rude, and twice now there has been a major glitch when I have brought my kids in. The first was that my daughter was given TWO epipen injections for anaphylaxis, not one as they had said--they then should have kept her overnight, but sent her home (this was verified by the paramedics and on her discharge papers, although my questioning was dismissed). On a recent occasion, my daughter fainted in the corridor and nobody came to help even as I called out and made eye contact with several nurses. When one (male) one eventually came with a chair, I had my daughter laid carefully on the ground, and he YELLED at me for letting her faint on the floor--she is my height, had a broken tailbone and I was in front of her in case she fainted. I was already in shock about my daughter's pain, and being actually yelled at by a nurse who watched her faint and ignored me as I called for help was completely unacceptable and upsetting. Not a single nurse introduced themselves or their position when they came into the room--I had to ask each one who they were and why they were there, as my daughter was semi-conscious. My understanding is that they need to verify their identity before they do anything to someone, like give Fentanyl?? It also took nearly an hour to get her pain meds with a broken tailbone, even though she was green and her blood pressure had dropped, and meds had been ordered. When I followed up politely but also a bit worried because my daughter was in incredible pain and shock, the nurse barked at me that didn't I know it took time to get things from the pharmacy and surely I should know that. I felt so patronized and treated as "an overdramatic soccer mom" in the ways I was addressed ... or ignored. Be on high alert here because the skill, attention and compassion levels seem nowhere near what they should be and what I have experienced in other places, and I would never leave a young person alone in their care in ER without an advocate. And if you do not speak English or feel confident questioning authority for any reason, BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU or demand an interpreter, you will need that support. I hate to say this, but women, bring a white male with you or else you will not be taken seriously. Awful to have to write that, and the paramedics I've had have been brilliant, but when you get to ER that all goes out the window. :-( read more

My Grandpa had to get admitted because his incision re-opened from his knee replacement. Well, the Dr. was wonderful but that is about all. Everyone else was grumpy and no one had a smile on their face. They even came in with the wrong charts! They had to keep asking and re-asking questions over and over which should have been in his chart but for some reason was not.Every time they came into the room and that was always their excuse, " We need it for his charts" even though they just got the information. It was not a good experience and I would never recommend this place to anyone. Again the only nice person was the Dr. himself. read more

Avoid BCH and CMC if at all possible. This health provider network has a spotty track record and a billing system that boarders on fraud. I have to take care of a lady suffering from CIDP, a rare branch of MS. I had to visit her daily while she was in for gall stones to inform the nurses, who seemed to be switched out every 4 hours never to return, about her condition constantly. I had the bad fortune of having to explain her condition to doctors who would not reference her illness or tell me they knew of it already, but could not be bothered to remember how to properly care for a patient with it. They kept her for 3 months at BCH after her surgery due to complications but I had to chase her down through almost every ward due to at least 4 different doctors a day changing her orders. I found her in the cardiac ward one night after she had woken from a nightmare with an elevated heart rate that lasted 30 min and that same week with no indication of elevated heart rate they sent her back to a different inpatient ward which i had to start briefing the nurses all over again on CIDP. on a number of occasions i had to search the ward because nurses refused to inform me of where her room was or would purposefully misinform me as to the building she was in. I am a live in assisted living helper doing most of my work as charity to this poor lady and had to watch her daily be mistreated and misdiagnosed by clueless doctors and uninterested nurse who are only transferring through BCH. I had to watch as she suffered through horrible pain as they would wake through out the day and night, one doctor going so far as to SLAP her still healing surgical scar, during her recovery many times with no testing or blood working being done, the whole reason for waking her. More then a few visits found me having to physically impose myself between a "visiting" nurse or "observing" physician so she would get more then 2 hours sleep in 24. This became so persistent that I had to take time off of a another full time job to sit with her as she begged me not to leave just so my presence could keep the hospital staff from inflicting further pain on her. When she was finally transferred out of BCH's "tender" cares her condition improved in weeks. Still the butchers job done with her surgeries has left her with large permanent scars, nerve damage, and continuing pain on top of weakness and tremendous pain form her CIDP. It has been six months since she left BCH, the pain and scars of her surgery now outweigh the pain caused by CIDP and no pain killer or specialists treatment has reduced this. She has just had to learn to live with it, the only good is that when pancreatits, which BCH doctors assured was gone, showed itself again I took her to Good Samaritan in Lafayette and found other treatable health problems that BCH had completely missed during enough test and radiation that they have now elevated her chance for cancer. read more

Went here after falling while hiking and cutting my chin and knocking out 4 teeth. The care was just AMAZING!! I am a nurse practitioner and I know what good care is. These people were the best. So attentive, so on top of it, so compassionate. They were so concerned about my pain level and monitored it all the time. I know this isn't the place for severe trauma as the Main Broadway campus specializes in severe trauma. But for what I was going through, they were THE BEST!!! Especially nurse Jennifer, Dr. Cabeen and Nurse Drew!!! These people are top notch!! read more

I went in to get stitches because I fell on the ice and had a hole in my lip. No "urgent care" facility is open in Boulder at 7:20pm on a Friday night, so to the ER it was. They PA did a decent job patching me up (though don't ever let them put dissolvable stitches in your mouth - they don't always dissolve and create irritation). Then the bill came: $1,000 for the actual services I received (stitches, etc.) and $3500 for unspecified, miscellaneous hospital charges. THIS is why healthcare is so expensive! What am I being billed for? Gauze pads marked up 10,000%? Waiting room magazines? I was in and out in less than 2 hours, my procedure took about 15 min. To be fair, I suspect every hospital does this, but it's a ridiculous charge and this is what's wrong with healthcare in this country. After reading previous horrible reviews I was inclined to chime in. I have been at the ER Foothill location 4 times in the past 2 year. My 14 year old daughter received excellent care and I was impressed with the service provided and the knowledge we received of her condition and the reassurance a mother needs. My son was admitted 3 times. Once for a bike accident, second for a puncture wound, and thirdly for a broken bone. My son also received excellent care. I recently had surgery that required a hospital stay at the Foothill location and my care couldn't have been better. The medical assistance were there for me at any time needed. My family physician that works at the Foothill location went out of her way to pay me a visit as she was wondering how I was doing even though I was not her patient at the time. I have visited family members multiple times in the hospital at Foothill and not once I have I heard any complaints by them. I hope this helps others who are considering this location. read more
