I am not your typical customer at a store like this, but the kid in me always draws me into the unusual and fantasy worlds. This store has a wide variety of old and new. The prices are very reasonable, especially on the one of a kind items. There is a wide range of collectables along with a large book and graphic novel section in the lower level. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this shop but i couldn't give it 5 stars due to what it compares to; i used to go to Nostalgia comics in Brum which is my ideal comic book shop. I have been to the Forbidden Planet in NYC before but it's been many years. I'm actually not a comic book fan, but I do like that there are so many vinyl pop dolls here, and that there are video game and film references here (and not just comic books). There are SO many of those blind box dolls here. If you are a collector, this is definitely the place for you. The prices for the most part seem on par with what you can get in the States, maybe slightly expensive (example: a Mass Effect Miranda hoodie is 50 pounds, while in the States it is $50 USD) You can apply for VAT refund here as long as you spend over 30 pounds. read more

This place is unbelievable!!!! It quite literally has everything you could ever want. The toys and collectables are so cool, they are a must see, this is fan boy heaven. My favorite part however, was the lower level, where all the comics and books are. This place is huge, and they have everything you could ever want, from manga, to Disney, to DC comics. The selection is so huge, it would be easy to lose track of time and spend an entire day just browsing. Great store, highly recommend to anyone. read more

They probably have every single new issue you are looking for but unfortunately the staff(if you can find one) doesn't always know where to look for so you could end up spending a lot of time finding what you want. Last time I was here I was for some reason a bit disappointed. I expected dools and gadgets from a wider range of films. I can still miss a few classics like The Addams Family and Pirates of The Carribbeans, but I understand movies get out of date I do. Dr Who is still the main feature together with Marvels superheroes. I've been a regular visitor to Forbidden Planet over the years, mainly present shopping for my Star Trek-enthusiast other half. I generally find the stock a bit mixed: it's great for comics and books on everything to do with cult films, sci-fi and fantasy, as the downstairs section is very extensive. The upstairs, where they have models, figures and collectables is a bit more mixed. Sure, the stock is still pretty extensive, but there are so many genres these days that what they can carry for any one individual series or film is going to be limited, and to some extent change with the fashion. So, not much by way of Star Trek, lots on the new Dr Who, but rather little on the original Dr Who series, and so on. Of course, so much is now available on specialist sites on the net, that the appeal of the store is really for those who want to 'try before they buy'. The staff are generally very knowledgeable - enthusiasts, I suspect - but not always great on customer service, as the queues at the upstairs check-out seem can get quite long at peak periods. Still, a must for hard-core fantasy and sci-fi fans. read more

You can find absolutely everything here from movie memorabilia, dolls and posters to collectables, comics, books, DVDs, key rings and sci-fi accessories. This place is packed to the brim with so much... stuff! There are two whole floors to explore and something for everyone - adults and kids alike. The staff are really knowledgeable and can handle the geekiest of questions! My favourite part of the store is the comics / book section. There's so much choice and so many inspiring comic books and sci-fi novels, surely anyone will become a fan of *something* once you step inside this store. It truly is Geek Heaven! However, not being much of a geek (anymore) and not being a sci-fi nutjob (anymore), I was slightly bored by the tacky figurines at hugely overdone prices. On the other hand, the proper 'vintage' stuff - the original batman, superman etc stuff - was really cool! Again, overpriced, but there aren't many places you can find stuff like that. It was nice to look at, anyway. Downstairs was great - full of Torchwood books and new-series Dr. Who DVDs. I was very happy with that (sad but true). This is one of the largest and best stocked comic book shops in London. Trust me - I know my Gambits from my Green Goblins and when it comes to comic book shops I know a good one when I see it. You aren't going to find the prices you get online here, its about £10-20 for a current or classic book but what you do get is expert staff, time to browse and the ability to flick though the books. They also hold geek events which are good to look out for. Seriously if you have a couple of hours to kill in town and don't want to sit in a pub I'm recommend here. While I'm still trying to figure out just why exactly I haven't been back here for so long, I'm chuffed to bits (yes, bits!) that I have rediscovered Forbidden Planet. Not shying away from the masses, this is geekiness on display and I defy anyone not unleash their inner child while scanning all the rows and shelves of sci-fi, fantasy and general cult entertainment paraphernalia on show. From film, television, computer games, books or comics there's something for everyone here in this niche store. While all the buzz and excitement is going on, one can't help but feel the real magic occurs downstairs, in the bookshop. Quite frankly, most of what is on show was born of a book or comic so having a bookshop just makes sense. It feels right and proper. And quite a bookshop it is, mostly made up of comics and graphic novels which I've never really been particularly interested in, there are still numerous magazines and an array of books available. Plenty to peruse through, some you're likely to be familiar with, much you probably won't be. DVD's are also available down here. All in all, it's quite difficult to have a good look around and not buy anything. But whatever one buys, one always wants more. The people I'm buying Christmas presents for this year are SO lucky. Although I only have 2 check ins here I do pop into this place quite often, especially around Christmas and often by fan related gifts for friends and end up with my own piece of fanzone myself (mockingjay pins, Star Wars lightsaber chopsticks, tardis teapot to name but a few!!) Forbidden planet represents many many areas of the memorabilia universe with lots of things from TV shows, films, video games and then a vast downstairs full of comics, books, graphic novels and DVDs. It's worth a visit whether you plan on buying anything or not just to ogle the beautious things on display but I guarantee you will have a huge wish list when you leave. Forbidden Planet is always up to date with its memorabilia and prices do vary but the quality is usually great. Staff are very helpful and they can often order you in things if what you want is not in stock. This is awesome. Really, really awesome. But, at the same time, kinda pointless. The problem is it plays to a very weird market. Horror film memorabilia, Japanese imported toys, comic books, video game related toys, professional wrestling paraphernalia, modern and classic rock music accessories... it's all very, very niche, but, if you happen to fit in that tiny niche, like I do, then it's pretty much perfect. Brilliantly located in the centre of London, and surprisingly affordable with a ridiculously HUGE selection of all the things I previously mentioned. The only possible criticism is that, if you're looking for something specific, the store can be somewhat challenging to navigate, as everything is pretty randomly displayed in only a very rough order, but, somehow the staff are able to memorise how this seemingly randomised system works, so just ask if you're looking for something. I made sure to plan at least one comic store visit into my recent trip to London. I am a nerd. What can I say? I have to check out the local comic stores wherever I go. Thanks to comic book podcasts, I had heard a lot of good things about Forbidden Planet, so I decided that would be my store of choice. As comic book stores go, Forbidden Planet is definitely in the upper echelons. Clean, extremely well-stocked, and deals galore. What more can you want? Definitely a great experience. Funny sidenote: I went up to one of the employees and said "I'm from the states, so what can I get here that I can't get at home?" Back at home, my friends and I often made runs to "the nerd store." Forbidden Planet is the ULTIMATE "nerd store" and I can't express how pleased I am at finally living in the city which contains this magnificence. This shop is my go-to for any Doctor Who/Star Wars/vinyl figurines/ANYTHING needs. The first couple times I went to Forbidden Planet, years ago, I was completely unaware of the basement level book and comic shop, but earlier this year I actually paid attention and holy cow, that place is heaven, with the white lights and the angels singing as you descend from the main floor. I only have two wishes that could make this place even more amazing: 1. More Forbidden Planet specific merch. Located about a 5 minute walk from Tottenham Court Road Tube station you will find FB (Forbidden Planet) Yes okay this is not an LCS (local comic store) and therefore some comic geeks do get uppity about going to FB....I cannot see it myself......FB has everything you would expect...from figurines...books... US/UK comics...DVD....manga...to dolls (yes guys get over that is what they are)....all that might be missing is the LCS charm. I go to this FB (as it is my LCS - honest it is the closest one to me) at least once a week sometimes fortnightly spending a good hour browsing and and rarely do I leave empty handed - there is always something (new and good) to buy.... Okay I also confess I go there weekly as there is a book they have on Russian Prison tattoos which i m oddly drawn to and which I like to peruse every single week - no idea why but one day I have sworn to myself I will buy it - I am just looking for the right russian prison tattoo that will suit me... but I digress. The prices at FB are probably a little higher than you can find elsewhere (online)...so bear this in mind. Other than that it has everything you would want to see. Hint: For graphic novels in particular you can usually get them cheaper (by around GBP5 I find) on amazon so bear that in mind. read more

If ever there was a shrine to fandom in London, this is it. But I show my age sometimes, as I still think of this as the new location - I still remember the cramped hot place up on New Oxford Street. This is a much better store - despite the crowds, you can generally get around with the exception of a couple of pinch points on the ground floor. Upstairs is for all the merchandise, including the glass wall of statues that I'll always want, but never need or own. Then downstairs are the comics, graphic novels and books. My one little treat is that you can sometimes just find signed copies of books sitting on the shelves, leftover from when they had a signing. I nearly bought a David Weber book I'd already read on my Kindle because of that. Heck, I'm still thinking I should go back and get it since they don't charge extra for the signed copies and it was in paperback. I love FP, and I don't have any real criticism. I think old age and cynicism is stopping me from adding the fifth star! read more

However the staff don't always know where to look, and if I'm honest, you don't normally see them downstairs, only upstairs. I don't think I've seen the downstairs till manned in ages. I kind of hate to admit this, but today was the first time I had ever been to Forbidden Planet. Brought along by Lizzie G, I ventured through the ground floor level of figurines and other such movie paraphernalia, downstairs into a wonderland of sci-fi pornography. I was so overcome by the sheer magnitude of joyous science fiction in comics, graphic books, regular books and movies, I almost collapsed from rapture. All my favourite authors were on show, some with books I am yet to read and hadn't until now known to be released. It was as if my passion for sci-fi had been intensified to whole new cataclysmic levels. Is it possible to die from a sci-fi overdose? I wanted to sit and read, draw my own characters, write my own superhero literature, just suck in as much of this imaginative juice into my racing mind as possible. Creativity was literally pulsing out of my pours. This is the biggest collection of sci-fi literature I have ever seen. I'm a geek, and somehow the geek in me always manages to track down comic book stores wherever I go. That's how I found my way to Forbidden Planet once upon a time. I've stoppedby a few times and to be completely honest, I've never bought anything here - but it's not because of their lack of selection. They have a great selection of comics, Japanese manga, and toys and collectibles. Most of their merchandise is geared towards sci-fi and fantasy. It's actually a very impressive store - however, most of the merchandise is sourced from Diamond Comics and walking through I could point at almost each item and recall which issue of Previews magazine it was ordered from. Since importing to the UK is costly I can't say that I've ever found any amazing deals here. I've been completely spoiled living in Toronto where there are several really awesome comic stores so when I come to Forbidden Planet I either have everything that I *would* buy, or could get it cheaper elsewhere. That said, this store is still worth a visit - you never know what might find. (Lightsaber chopsticks anyone? Hehe) read more
