I was paying $150/mo for my gyms in Tampa so your $85 with my company discount doesn't scare me. At all. I was prepared to sign a membership and grab a personal training package because being a Covid nurse has really thrown my fitness into a downward spiral and I've been trying to recoup on my own since I've moved to Holland. I have no qualms about prioritizing my fitness and I really enjoy the accountability of having a trainer, plus they have group fitness classes and I sure do love me some group training (ex Burn Bootcamp member. Someone please open a Burn in Holland. Please!) So I go in. The dude that checked me in was nice enough. I told him I signed up for a day pass. He said okay and enjoy your workout. Like OBVIOUSLY it's my very first time here. There are multiple floors and rooms to this place so I was pretty shocked when I asked where everything was that nobody offered me a tour. He just said "the locker room is downstairs" okay bro. Whatever. Needless to say that the indifference was noted and I'll be bringing it back to my work peers. Just because we get a corporate discount doesn't mean it's worth using. They have a great variety of equipment and different rooms, classes, etc but they have no interest in customer service. I think they offer one on one training as well and have a smaller weight room in the back of the facility. After neglecting my new years resolution to eat better and work out more, I challenged myself to do G-Force's classes using their current Groupon. I started going to their Body Flow class. The session I've been attending is an abbreviated lunch-time workout class that is a hybrid of Thai Chi and Yoga. It's not the most strenuous class, but it's a nice break up my day. It offers stretching and some core work. They offer other classes that are more intense, like Body Pump and combat. They even have a flying yoga class that uses silk ariels to twist up in. This is the first gym where I learned about "branded" workout programs. I mean, I knew that stuff like Zumba was a workout brand, but I guess I didn't realize that a gym could have all one brand for all their classes. This is a Less Mills gym and they use all of those programs in their class. The classes seem to emphasise workouts to music and have a heavy choreography component to it - like the moves are all timed to music, almost perfectly. Once you catch the beat, it's fun to the move to the music. Keep in mind that they don't offer showers for everyone. They have one bathroom with one shower stall but given that the shower is in the same room as the toilet, I feel bad tieing up the bathroom to shower after class, since others may need to go to the bathroom.

If you are working on gaining strength, losing weight, maintaining or just want to remain mobile, there is a spot for you. I should also mention that TLD has the resources to support injuries as well. The facilities are always clean, well organized and there is plenty of free parking around the building. The owner and coaches put a lot of thought into their class structure. You are never fighting for weights or space to complete your workout. One of my favorite things about the gym is their consistency. I have been a member of a few gyms that offer group classes and the type of workout you receive is dependent on what time you go and the coach. At TLD, while the classes change daily, the workout for that day is the same. So if you go in the morning or evening you will receive the same workout. Also, even though their services are already exemplary, TLD is always looking for ways to improve and asks for feedback from its members. And last by certainty not least are the people. Being a bit of an introvert, I am still surprised by how welcoming & supportive not only the coaches are but the other members. I have found a home that I never knew I needed.

I'd only done kickboxing classes at home so I was interested in checking it out. I did have a bit of trouble booking the free class online, but I messaged their Instagram account and got help right away, which was awesome. My friend and I arrived 15 minutes early so I could get set up with gloves and a heart rate monitor as well as fill out paperwork, learn a bit more about the class, and meet the instructor, Hannah. She went over the basic punches and flow of the class, which was helpful because once we got going, things moved quickly! I did the M45 Undefeated class, which is "a fast paced, 45 minute workout including 6 rounds of boxing + 2 rounds of fitness." Each station had a different combination of punches on different types of bags. There are video screens that show each of the moves, which was helpful except when I couldn't see it a few times. Hannah walked around and gave encouragement and pointers on form, which was really helpful. I liked the fast pace and the mix of cardio, bodyweight exercises, and boxing. The music was also really loud and helped keep my energy up throughout the workout. It went by so quickly and we did a group cool down. The heart rate monitor is a cool feature and it shows on a leaderboard during the class - I didn't really pay attention to it until the end, because I was so focused on getting the moves down. They email you your stats after the class, that was cool to see. I could tell that the community at Mayweather is strong, and I appreciated the warm welcome as a newbie. I'd be interested in going back for more classes, I just wish it was closer to my house!

So, I search Facebook events regularly for new *free* activities. One day, 2 summers ago, I came across an event for the F45 Grand Rapids grand opening. I'd never heard of this F45 thing before so I did some googling and found out that it's a workout concept originating from Australia and this would be the first franchise opening within a 3 hours' drive from us. My sisters and I decided to check it out and that Saturday morning, we got to the strip on 28th street where Michaels craft store used to be. The building was just being set up with mats, tv monitors and equipment - basic floor, walls and ceiling. We ran through several stations outdoors using free weights, ropes and yoga mats. Throughout the whole workout, trainers were encouraging us with, 'Nice work!', high fives and occasionally helping us modify lifts to target the correct muscle group. It was so much fun and by the end, I made up my mind to sign up for the 2 weeks of free, unlimited classes! Since that summer, I've been going to classes randomly with my friend Nicole who goes daily. They have a 20 class pass for $300. It's steep compared to gyms that offer memberships, but I have more of an incentive to actually attend these group workouts than I do if I were to hit the gym alone. Now that the place is established, they offer multiple classes from 530a-7p, 2 clean bathrooms, cubbies to stash your coats/keys, security cameras, and a welcoming environment. I've found that the Saturday morning classes fit my schedule the best and they offer 3 classes before 11am! It's such a great way to start my weekend and gives me time to recover before the work week begins again.
