Apparently, it's hard to find social security administration offices with open appointment times. But, although a distance from my home, they were able to find an appointment a week out in their Wilmette office. As most government buildings are, this is an older location in need of a facelift. When we walked inside, the place was packed. I said to the person I was there with, "I'm glad we have an appointment." The security guard handed me a number and immediately the number one less than mine was called. He laughed and said all of the people there were ahead of me, and they don't call numbers in order. Before I sat down, our number was called next. We went to the window and the agent knew what we needed since we had an appointment. (I guess the crowd waiting didn't have appointments.) The transaction took less than five minutes and we were done. So, aside from the aesthetics, this trip was quick and productive. The rep helped us quickly and did a good job. I strongly suggest that, if you need to go to a Social Security office, you call their service number to make an appointment.

The website tells me that i need an appointment, but it takes me through endless circles about eligibility, but never gives me an option to pick a time for an appointment. I called two numbers to try to set up an appointment over the phone, but get the same circular prompts without a result. The shield they put to avoid having to speak to them is incredible. I have no choice but to show up without an appointment and doubtless waste additional hours waiting in line before I can present two simple documents, which likely will take two minutes to process.

It may not compare in size or architectural design to the Seattle library, but the Lake Forest…read morelibrary offers the traditional library experience: cushy leather couches, high arched ceilings, hushed studies, and dense shelves of endless tomes. Let not the stately, historical exterior fool you; this facility is all sorts of state-of-the-art from the materials they carry (e.g., current DVDs) to the technologies they employ (downloadable e-books). I can't help but always be impressed and pleased at having access to this library as a local resource through the parental units. Walking through the doors here inevitably leads to happy feelings!

Besides the wonderful children's section that continues to be a highlight of our week, I've been borrowing books on CD. They have a decent selection and the front librarians can point you to the ones worthwhile to check out. I spend a lot of time in the car and these have been a lifesaver. I've also gotten addicted to checking out books online. Yes! This library lets you borrow E-books from the comfort of your own home. Perfect for us parents who are on the go and don't have the ability to pursue the stacks on our own time. The library offers multiple study areas and free wi-fi. Yeah baby! So you can set up for the day if you need to get some work done ... But quiet library etiquette is still the rule so put away that annoying cell phone! Also, if you need a book and the library doesn't carry it, the reference desk is extremely helpful in getting an inter library loan for you. I can't tell you how many crabby librarians I've had to work with at other libraries. But not here! They're all helpful and approachable. Oh. And they're on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. However you need to reach them, they're there. One minor thing -- I do think it's time for them to update the adult media stacks from a decor standpoint. But really, I'm so please to call the Lake Forest library my home library.

All of the shopkeepers and their workers speak English, and do it well enough, and with a high degree of courtesy. The police do not hassle people for walking down the street. If you were questioned, you either looked suspicious or you did something wrong or questionable. We plan to remain in Mundelein for the rest of our lives.
