Before leaving, I distinctly heard footsteps following me, although no one was there. I dismissed them as part of the atmosphere. That was my first mistake. Since returning home, objects have moved on their own, something whispers my name from empty rooms, and every night at precisely 3:17 a.m., I awaken to the sound of spurs dragging slowly down the hallway. No one else can hear them. No one believes me. I haven't slept in days. Calico is absolutely worth visiting, but before you leave, count every member of your party--and make certain you haven't gained another. If you hear footsteps behind you, do not turn around. It already knows where you live.

We visited in February 2026 during our trip to Las Vegas and were impressed by the dramatic desert scenery, unique rock formations, and panoramic views from the surrounding hills.   Today, visitors from around the world come to experience the atmosphere of an authentic Old West mining town. The park offers a variety of amenities, including RV and group camping, cabins and bunkhouses, mountain biking trails, off-road vehicle areas, shops, and restaurants. Throughout the year, Calico hosts several special events such as Civil War reenactments, the Spring Festival with Americana music, Calico Days celebrations featuring burro races and mining-themed activities, and the popular Halloween Ghost Haunt in October.   Only minutes from Interstate 15 and a short drive north of Barstow, Calico Ghost Town makes an enjoyable roadside stop for food, shopping, sightseeing, and a glimpse into California's mining history. However, I would recommend visiting Calico Ghost Town during the spring or winter months rather than in the summer, when desert temperatures can become extremely hot and less comfortable for exploring the outdoor attractions and surrounding hills.

Unlike our first experience here with the puppers, there weren't any guard dogs to check and see if your dog has a "sticker" to verify if your dogs vaccinations are up to date. Each side has a water fountain for the pups, a doggie bag station to clean up your pups business and a trash can. Along with a round table and a bench. Most of the dogs we've seen at the park are pretty friendly as well as the owners. The only gripe I have is the pet owners that leave their cig butts on the ground...the trash can is NOT that far away...not to mention it's next to the exit door.

All the kids we encountered were so sweet and kind towards each other. It was really nice seeing everyone get along and playing together. There's an office, a baseball field and bathrooms. I have complained several times to the coach about a child on the sports team that doesn't know the meaning of team spirit before complaining in the office. It seemed to do some good as the child was not as vocal or rude in her displeasure of other players ON HER OWN TEAM TO THEIR FACE or running all over the volleyball field to take every shot like no-one else could play....running into, knocking down, and hitting other players on her own team in her zeal to get to the ball and be the star. (I GUESS WE NO LONGER TEACH THAT THERE IS NO I IN TEAM?) They say they talked to her but could not sit her down because she paid for the sport. Well so did everyone else who was not being let to play because this one girl wants to be a star. While others on the team had to hear those remarks aimed at them making them feel bad when they missed the ball. She doesn't run all over the place taking the shots anymore which is nice, and everyone gets a chance to try--which is what they paid for-- BUT Her remarks have not stopped. They are not as loud now, after my complaint, but they have not stopped. They have just been made quieter and that does not make them ok. AND I am tired of the comments like "What was that? " when my daughter misses the ball!! ALL I CAN SAY IS WHAT KIND OF ATTITUDE AND WHAT A MOUTH FOR A CHILD??!! AND WHY DOES THE COACH STAY SILENT? I expect the coach to do the right thing. In my book just allowing one child to run their mouth to others undermines the experience for every other player on the team and that is not right. The parents and children are customers who paid for a service-not abuse, right? I pay for my daughter to have a good time and enjoy being around others, not be made to feel self conscious. Honestly, at a time when kids are going through so much emotional stuff, and we all know it, I would have thought they would have taken this more seriously and handled this better. It's their job. Instead, my daughter, and everyone else on the team, gets to watch and learn bad sportsmanship and a bad attitude is acceptable while also feeling self conscious every time that player wants to say something. Thats not a lesson I want my child to learn. AND not one I am going to pay for. Sports is supposed to give them a chance to have a good time, learn lessons of teamwork and good sportsmanship, and build self-confidence. This season was doing the exact opposite of all of those things, and nothing was resolved by complaining. So I won't be going here anymore for the Summer or Sports and will definitely not be recommending it to anyone I know. Every child who pays to be on the team should be treated with respect and consideration. We all want them to win, but I think there are things that are more important than winning. Every person on the team should have to respect the others and their right to play and be treated right.

To be clear, this is not about the staff. The people here are excellent, they genuinely love these dogs, and they are the only reason the place is still functioning. My issue is entirely with corporate. What has changed since the acquisition: The longtime manager was let go with no explanation. There is no full-time manager on site anymore. The new manager splits time between two locations. Business hours were changed with zero notice to members. I dropped my dog off Thursday morning,8/27, and only found out when it was time for pickup. No E-Mail went out. It is now 9/4 and corporate still has not notified members directly. The staff themselves had less than 24 hours' warning. The hours advertised are wrong. The actual hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and the location is closed on weekends. Check before you make the trip, because the posted schedule has not been corrected. Here is the real problem. Regulars buy prepaid monthly packages. I still have about eight sessions left that I paid for under a schedule that no longer exists, and I now have to rearrange my workweek to use them. Selling packages on one set of hours and then changing those hours mid-membership, without notice, is unacceptable. The dogs feel it. Longtime owners are already looking elsewhere, and my dog is losing the pack he grew up with. And when a business cuts its hours, staff hours are usually next. This team deserves better than that. I recommended this place to friends and family for years. I can't anymore. If your prepaid package was affected by the schedule change, consider filing a complaint with the BBB. Until corporate communicates with members directly and honors what it sold, I'd look elsewhere.
