There's even a military dog cemetery vibrationally there is a spiritual vibe here when it's quiet, you could almost hear the sounds. This museum was not wildly sexy, it was whatever was left over from World War 2, the real deal. The complex was huge with lots of underground tunnels and a lot of barrack buildings on site. This was genuine history and artifacts. The tour guides dress up in costumes of that time and the commentary was very detailed. Great place to visit if you love WW2 history or local history of LA. You may need to wait a while if you want a full tour of the grounds. I am told they do conduct private group tours if you have enough people. Public tours are not frequent. Very little-known completely cool museum. It's tucked away off the beaten path and if you don't pay attention to the signs you might drive right by. What's cool about the location is it used to be an old army coastline defense battery. The strategic spots along these hills were perfect for cannon placement and bunkers. In fact you can find the old cement bunkers and underground placements all along this area of the coast. But here at the museum they've been fairly well kept. Enough to give you a feel for what it was like. Something I found neat; there's a military working dog cemetery here. The area is fenced off with a nice gate and maintained. It has markers telling you the dogs' names and when they were in service, etc. It's nice and not something I knew they did anywhere. Now, this isn't a place where you would spend a lot of time but it's good for a walk through and it's free. The whole area around here is good for hiking and checking out views of the coast so you're probably down here for that and while you're at it, walk in to the museum area. It's outdoors so you're probably going to stumble upon it anyway. Hint: if you've ever been to the Friendship Bell and wondered "what's that over there?" Go on and check it out. read more

Here at Forth MacArthur, named after the father of the famed WWII 5 star general, you can feel and be intimate with the daily life of people who probably had that fear, too, only more so because the Port of LA was a likely ground zero for attack, and that's right out the window. The museum itself is about a US Army post that guarded the harbor from 1914 to 1974. I don't think the artifacts in the museum are the best reason to visit Fort MacArthur, though some of them are pretty cool. Just seeing and standing where The Big Guns once pointed to the Port and stood in silent vigil, ready to lob shells all the way to Catalina, is an awesome feeling of military power and local history. And they have a gift shop! No visit to a museum is complete without trinkets and trash. Though small, the gift shop at Fort M. is packed with decent stuff, and some great military posters. While we were there, an elderly gentleman wearing a Fort MacArthur golf shirt (didn't see those in the gift shop!?) started a conversation with us, and I found him to be charismatic and pleasant, and impressively knowledgeable about Fort M. His stories added a great deal to our understanding of how the fort was staffed, what daily life was like back then, and how it served to protect and defend us from enemies. I fell blessed to have met him. Spent most of an LA visit trying to check out the Fort MacArthur Museum. Erratic hours, if they close for a special event like a tv series filming there they do not update their voicemail message. Got to see the exterior portions a lot sooner than the actual museum. Similar to Battery Randolph in Waikiki (where the US Army Museum in Hawaii is located), very awe-inspiring to of all the Coastal Artillery components that had to work together to perform a fire mission. On my last day in town made it out one more time, and this time I finally caught them when they were open! Several rooms full of historical photos and documents, it was really interesting to see how many Army sites there used to be in the South Bay area. Again the layout of the rooms reminded me of Battery Randolph. Very enjoyable and glad to have crossed this off of my list! read more

To be quite honest, I really don't care much for military museums, but hubby seems to like them -- who am I kidding? He totally digs 'em! I was only there because well, he wanted to go and my other option was to wait in the car and that would be boring as I didn't even bring a book along. It wasn't as bad as I had originally expected. They had the artillery in the main open area and the bunker served as a museum with articles, photos and other artifacts from the wars starting 1917 to 1970s. It was sort of interesting -- moreso for hubby -- but it wasn't THAT bad. It's just that I walked through and I was done, but hubby wanted to look at everything in detail. There isn't really a charge. They do ask for a $3 donation for adults and $1 for children so we put $7 into the box. Lots of people just walked in and I commented loudly that people were walking in without donating so that they'd hear me. People have no shame. I mean sure I wasn't bowled over, but they do rely on donations to upkeep the place. Then there are those people who bring their dogs in for a tour even though it specifically says NO DOGS. SHEESH! It was aiiiight. I'm not coming back again though. 3.5 stars. read more

The Great LA Air Raid! I had never heard of Fort MacArthur until I bought tickets to the "Great LA Air Raid". I knew Maxwell DeMille was hosting this event, so figured it would be good. Good enough to get me to drive all the way out to San Pedro. Drove up and saw that this musuem was located right next door to the park with the Friendship Bell and across the street from the lighthouse (which I had been to). I'm glad that my first introduction to this museum was at this event... I walked up to a barred gate with a uniformed military guard shouting instructions at the new arrivals. Then we were allowed to go forward into the 1940s era green tents to get tickets. Once inside, you were back in time. I absolutely felt like I was experiencing the real deal. There were military displays, military personnel, weapons and vehicles on display. But the main building for this event was the gun battery where they had live big band music, informational displays lining tunnels under hill, and people dressed up in their best 40s attire swing dancing the night away. It is an annual re-enactment of the "Battle of Los Angeles" when people believed that we were being attacked by Japanese or UFOs. At 8pm they invite everyone outside and they move the search lights around the sky exactly like in the famous photo of the event (front page of the LA Times back in the day). Then the firing begins. They have real military people shooting real military equipment and add in some pyrotechnics. It's amazing. It happened to be raining this year and none of us minded standing outside in the rain watching this... it was that cool and seemed to only add to the authenticity. I can't wait to go again next year. Planning my outfit now. Note: Be there before sunset, because the view from on top of the hill facing the ocean is breathtaking. If I had been in the military in the early 20th century, I would've gladly accepted deployment to Fort MacArthur. Actually, I might have joined the military just to have the chance to be stationed here. I have to admit that the history of the place was a blur. I learned very little and I'm probably disappointing you because I have no details whatsoever, but it's not my fault. I walked about with jaw agape during my visit because I was too consumed by the scenery and the spectacular vista. I would've been the worst soldier here because I know I'd sneak out for daily picnics, kite flying breaks, and watching the sun set every evening. This peninsula wasn't meant for serious duties of any kind and it still isn't. It's all quite unfair. The Fort's interior is a fun little diversion for about 30 minutes as you walk through the underground bunker and look at the displays and machinery -- and kids love it -- but it doesn't match the superb outdoor landscape. It's an unfair competition, to be sure. When you package it all together, it's worth an afternoon of your time. Leave your bazooka at home and bring your kite. read more

We visited Saturday, it was not busy at all. It's a nice place to visit, the views are amazing. There is also plenty to see, and the volunteers are eager to share the history of fort McArthur. My children loved this museum, they had many questions and everywhere we went a volunteer was ready to answer. We were also allowed to go underground to the tunnels, that was an experience... dark and creepy. Not only did we learn the history associated with Fort McArthur but we also learned some extra fun facts... like you can find that Fort McArthur was on ghost adventures season 9 episode 7. Lost in San Pedro? Accidentally drive past the Korean Friendship Bell? We did. In the fog of a damp Coastal afternoon, we stumbled upon Angels Gate Park and this ghost vista full of bunkers and buildings open for the public to explore. The museum is underground in one of the abandoned batteries and open Weekends, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from Noon to 5:00 p.m. It's loaded with artifacts from 1914 through 1974 when this was the main military post guarding the Los Angeles Harbor. For a military museum, It was "nice", but we actually enjoyed walking around the huge park on the grounds that used to be Fort MacArthur. For the majority of our time there, we were alone, so it really added to the mystique and spookiness of the whole place. One of the best finds was some old sheds that were open and full of old army vehicles and parts. On a clear day, the Angels Gate Park and Fort MacArthur must offer beautiful views of the Pacific. You'll be hard pressed to discover a more overlooked or forgotten historical getaway so close to L.A. than Fort MacArthur. read more

Somehow my boyfriend and I found ourselves walking around in the eerie tunnels under Fort MacArthur. It's an open park, free for people to wander around unescorted, and the gate to the tunnels was just wide open with a wooden platform leading to it. That's sort of like an unspoken dare to curious minds like ours. As we re-emerged into the sunlight, elderly men who worked there and visitors stared accusingly at us as though we were scoping out a place to have covert intercourse or something. Frankly, I don't think I want to meet the people who could peer down that hallway and still get aroused. We walked through the other areas of the park/fort, under the ever-watchful and ever-suspecting eye of the gentlemen employees. Our own embarrassment aside, I felt we got a sampling of what life might have been like at MacArthur. Don't think too many people know of this place. I know I didn't until we randomly stumbled across it when walking around near the Friendship Bell. We first came across random bunkers in the hills west of the Bell. Thought it was pretty strange, and knowing that there was a Navy base nearby, we figured that may have been for some sort of military use. This museum is incredible. I had never seen anything like it in my life. I've toured naval ships in the summer years ago, and I've seen small-scale items related to past wars in cultural museums. But to be inside an actual bunker and whatnot that were once used since the early 1900s or something - that is pretty cool! It was interesting walking through the tunnels that were opened to the public. It was a bit claustrophobic as well, so I don't know how the militarymen used to handle it back then. It was a bit dark and eery in there, and that was a good touch to the place. There were tunnels that were closed off, and I sure wonder what was beyond these public bunkers. I've heard of people trespassing and such, taking other entrances to the place, but I'm not sure if I'd want to risk getting in trouble. If only they'd open all the bunkers up and turn all that into a museum of some sort, unless the government still uses some of these things? I doubt it though, but still. Just a thought. My dad was out visiting from the east coast. Being WWII buffs, we were both eager to visit here for the first time. I really wanted to give this place a glowing 5 star review. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of visiting on a Tuesday. Access to many areas was limited or locked up. I really wanted to show my dad the radio room, but we couldn't find it. I'm almost certain that the place is woefully underfunded and staffed exclusively by volunteers. There was only one guy on site that day and he seemed pretty busy with maintenance (thanks for that!) I would definitely recommend saving this for a weekend when there are more docents on hand and hopefully better access. I found myself thinking that in some ways, the website was better than the actual museum itself! In case you don't know already, the 48' long 14" guns and their carriages have long since been removed. read more

This place was just as I remembered as a kid, we didn't have a chance to do a tour but there are signs posted when and where you can get a tour slot. Grounds were completely open to walk around, very peaceful and nice for kids! Most definitely will be back for a full tour if possible! read more

This place is hidden within San Pedro. The coolest part of the museum is the piece of history they have displayed inside: - Historical front page newspaper ads from the 1940's - Old weapons like machine guns, and even a missile! - A wall of war badges - A model of the USS California and My personal favorite battleship the USS Arizona - The chilling feel you get that this tunnel/underground bunker was used back in the days (war-time) Outside you see old war vehicles like jeeps and cannons and you can walk freely above the base where there is a view of the coastline and a the field view of Fort Mac Arthur. Finding this place was quite puzzling. You may need to go their website to find the street name that gives you the road for direct access. I'll tell you what, the road we took curves in but you may not realize have pass it. When you get in it is before the Bird Preserve Center. You will see an old gate post and some old war vehicles gated. Overall its worth visiting and to experience, it may not be a lot compared to larger museums but it is free. One of LA's and the Harbor Area's great historic sites from WWII. A lot of history has taken place here and you can learn all about it when you visit the museum. Explore above and below ground in the old batterys. Learn about how it protected the harbor and LA. They do have 2 fund-raising events every year. One in Feb "The Great LA Air Raid" and Fort MacArthur Days in Jun-July. Both are great events that should be attended. My wife came the the FT Mac Days and she loved it. Soldier and family reenactors from the Renaissance all the way to current times. Please remember to donate. The check the times when you go depending on what exhibits or areas are open. read more

You must be young and in very good shape. My wife and I are in are 60 & 70. It took me a good half hour to walk down that hill, and there's no tram. They charged $50.00. To get in and another $20.00 to eat. You have to be young to go. read more

We stopped in here while wandering around San Pedro on a Saturday afternoon and were really impressed with this hidden gem. We were planning on just looking around on our own but we ran into museum guide Cisco who was really kind and who offered to unlock some of the closed rooms (power supply, communications, access tunnels!) The coolest thing was that we learned was that the GE generator is actually still functioning! THE event to go to at Fort MacArthur is the Great LA Air Raid. It's $30 a ticket, but for an annual event, it's totally worth it. A little history lesson; after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, everyone was convinced LA was next. Then one night, mysterious lights were spotted over the Pacific. Although nothing happened, for the last several years they have remembered this event with a huge swing dance! Everyone dresses in period costume and dances the night away to a live swing band. Then, they reenact the Air Raid, complete with soldiers running around and firing into the air. read more

Well old friend, you seem to surprise me every time, loved the vintage tank on display and even more the models posing. ;) It was exclusively classy, every little detail was right and for the first time I actually did feel transported into the 1940s. Enjoyed the air planes jetting across the sky, the social dance, live performances, and of course the reenactment of the LA Air Raid. The exterior lighting was gorgeous and the crowd awesome minus the drunken sailors who twirled their partner like cartoon characters. Gotta love drunken peeps but hey can't blame them especially if the only thing to drink is alcohol. Seriously who doesn't sell water, okay somewhat of a lie. But who in their right mind will stand in line for an hour for water versus the 10 min beer line. At least it made it amusing throughout the night. If you had to visit this location once a year, highly recommend attending the LA Air Raid. It's amazing that every year it keeps getting better and better. So throw on your best vintage cloths and fedora hat, enjoy a night when times were swinging. I had forgotten how spectacular this event was and looking forward to next year. read more

Now, usually a military museum wouldn't be top of our list for places to visit. But the Fort MacArthur Military Museum includes some fascinating history of the area, which started as a military reservation in the late 1800s. It then become a training center during World War I and was an important part of anti-aircraft defenses during the Cold War. It's a small museum, but definitely worth a visit before heading on to Angel's Gate Park. this review isn't really so much for the museum as it is for the fort macArthur site as a whole. fort macArthur is home to several batteries. the one next to the museum is battery leary merriam--i think it's still used by the coast guard, but it's not open to the general public. battery osgood-farley is located just west of the museum, across leavenworth drive. during the day, you can enter the barracks, walk though the corridors, && peruse the pictures, diagrams, and other such historical memorabilia in the radio, magazine, and plotting rooms. if you continue walking north on orc road, you'll encounter the awesome battery barlow-saxton. it was a mortar battery back during world war I, but has since become a playground for paintballers, skaters, gang members, sexually promiscuous teenagers, taggers and street artists alike. although this battery is closed to the public, sometimes during special events/tours, they'll open the gates and let you walk around. "curious interlopers" COULD enter by climbing around the chain-linked fence on north-east most part of the battery. (neither do i endorse trespassing nor have i done it myself. (you have no proof!)) a couple times in the past few years, this battery has been used as a movie set; during these times, the security is upped and the graffiti removed. the last time i came here, the city was doing construction on a near by road, and access to the battery was impossible. i've always loved coming here to explore the grounds && take pictures. it's totally worth a check out if you're in the san pedro area. read more

Really cool mini museum, with a lot of US history. It was very scary going down into the tunnel, but was a great experience. Careful going down the steep steps, as they are very high and steep, so hold on the railing. I went down facing the steps because I was too scared to fall. Once you get down, there's a long tunnel that leads to the other side. Then there's a mini museum with of plenty artifacts, we even got a tour from one of the people that worked there, which was nice of him to do. There's no ticket to get in, but there is a suggested donation, so overall, it was a very cool experience. read more

Fort MacArthur is a World War II army post and is located near Angels Gate Park, Point Fermin, and the Korean Friendship Bell. I was very impressed by this place when I first visited it. It felt like I was stepping back in time. The walls inside the batteries tell a rich story of Los Angeles during World War II with numerous newspaper clippings, photographs, and artillery on display. You can also venture above the batteries to the lookout post for a commanding view of the Pacific and look through the telescope. One of my friends told about Fort MacArthur and recommended that I go to Old Fort MacArthur Days, which is held annually in July. It's a two-day event of military re-enactments from various historical periods from the Romans to World War II soldiers. The interesting part of this event was seeing the parade of re-enactors and I got to see military uniforms from different eras. Re-enactment groups set up their tents in different areas of the fort, answering questions from attendees. Also, there are vendors selling military paraphernalia in addition to the Gift Shop, which is located across from the batteries. I also attended the annual LA Air Raid, which is held in February. The LA Air Raid is an afternoon/evening re-enactment of the day that Los Angeles was on alert for possible attack during World War II. Participants and attendees alike dress in vintage 1930s/1940s fashion. In addition to the evening re-enactment, there is a swing dance to live music as well as entertainment. For 2013, Tim Gill's Big Band, The Satin Dolls from Maxwell De Mille's Cicada Club (from Downtown LA) and the Lindy Hop dance troupe The Hollywood Hotshots entertained the crowd. Rusty Frank from Lindy By The Sea/Rusty's Rhythm Club (from El Segundo/Playa Del Rey) also came to teach a beginning swing dance lesson. Fort MacArthur is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. If you are planning on attending Old Fort MacArthur Days and The LA Air Raid, I strongly recommend bringing ear plugs/ear mufflers because the weapons that are used for the re-enactments are LOUD. There are porter-potties setup in the fort for these two events. Upon arrival, follow the cadets' instructions as they guide you to your parking spot. Most of the parking is on the grass. Food is served at both events. When I went to Old Fort MacArthur Days and The LA Air Raid, vintage-inspired ice cream treats were served to help people cool off after walking around and exploring the fort. I recommend this place for anyone who loves history, is a military buff and especially for children/young people because going to sites such as this adds new dimensions to learning about historical periods of time. read more

This is a review of Ft. MacArthur Days more than for the museum itself. I had to work this event with a table last year and I'm pretty sure I've never had so much fun at a museum event before. Basically, they invite just about every re-enactor group together and they pitch tents, fight each other, do demonstrations and just have a great time. You litterally can walk by Roman soldiers one second, civil war guys the next, and World War II renactors the next. Combine that with the beautiful views and you've got one heck of an day. Went here for the "Battle of Los Angeles" re-enactment and was really disappointed. There was no real reenactment. It was just a few volunteers walking around in costume, about five or six WWII-era vehicles put out on display, and the main feature was a night-long swing dance band. You can go swing dancing anywhere else for a lot less than $50 the tickets cost (and that's with the early bird discount.) The MC did a terrible job of reading the "announcements" of the impending attack - it was a lackluster, uninspired reading of a few lines of text. They fire off blanks from a few guns for about ten minutes (probably less) and that's it, that's the whole re-enactment. You can buy cafeteria-quality food here for pretty expensive prices and small ice cream sandwiches for $5 each (ouch!), so it is an expensive and unsatisfying culinary evening, even more expensive when you factor in the cost of tickets. Save your money and your time.
