Another review of a Metro station since I spend a ton of time in the system. Fort Totten is a fairly busy station. It's actually fairly airy, despite being three separate levels since all are open to the outside. It's surrounded by Fort Totten park, several apartment complexes, and the Metropolitan Branch bike trail runs through the property. There are often deer grazing on the grass next to the platforms and around the station, which you can't say you see at the downtown stations! The transit basics: Red and Green Metro lines intersect here. There's a rumor that the Yellow line trains might once again extend here, but we'll see. It's also a bus hub with routes to dowtown, Ivy City, several destinations in PG county, and more. It's bustling during the day and quiets down at night. Since it is surrounded by the park, some might not feel comfortable walking around late at night away from the well lit areas, but I've not experienced a problem so far walking home late at night (I live about a 10 minute walk away). read more

The red line is on construction past Takoma until at least the end of August 2024, so I needed to take the shuttle to get the rest of the way to Silver Spring. The station manager saw me in my confusion and took the time to show me to the shuttles and explain the situation. So sweet! Love this metro employee at this stop! The shuttles are easy to find outside the station and are well marked. Drivers are also friendly. The only downside was quite a bit of litter strewn around. read more

Fort Totten is a mess. There, that's the review. But I suppose I will expand on it. Fort Totten serves as a transfer point for many people taking the Metro, such as me. I end up here at least twice a day. I tried to do the best I could here, but I feel like this station is under a perpetual upgrade. Transferring from platforms can be a task, especially at peak hours. I wish people would realize the etiquette for escalators; stand to the right to allow people to talk on the left. Sometimes that is the difference in making the next train or not. When the Green Line was down recently for maintenance I made the mistake of taking the free shuttle service from here to my destination. In the future, if that is an option, I will probably not do that again. Overall it is not a bad station, it runs as it should. If they would just finish the update they started so long ago. read more

Metro is convenient when I don't want to drive or parking is a challenge. I don't visit this location often. The area is sketchy and there are unsavory characters that hang around inside and near the station. I would not stop by this location at dusk, if I were alone. I would wear a cross body pack and not carry a purse. read more

Another good place for making transfers and that's just about it. Fort Totten isn't a terrible station. The best thing may actually be the good view. It's an open air station. Other than that it's similar to most of them. It serves the Green, Red, and Yellow lines. It's the last Metro station in DC before you get to Maryland. This is much nicer than the others before this. All of the downtown stations are in tunnels and it's dark. There's also not as much of a crowd, especially at rush hour. This seems like one of the cleanest stations. Of course that's because it's not as busy. There's not as many idiots making a mess. read more

WMATA Platform Improvement Project has major changes to Metro service on Yellow and Green lines. Yellow line ends at Mount Vernon Square Metro. Access to Fort Totten is via Green line. All four metro stations on the Yellow line after Fort Totten are closed through Summer of 2021. West Hyattsville, PG Plaza, College Park and Greenbelt are accessible via free shuttle buses. read more

My review of Fort Totten is unchanged, but I thought I'd include some pictures to demonstrate the primary feature that makes it superior to Gallery Place, besides my personal commuting convenience: that it is open-air (I guess unless it's super cold or you need to go downtown). read more

Both upper and lower level platforms are super clean and well organized. The station workers are very friendly and helpful. It is about a ten minute walk to Fort Totten Park. The bus and taxi loading areas are a short strolll away from the station's mAin entrance. read more

Great layout for a transfer station with the green and red lines perpendicular to each other. This prevents confusion as it is very clear what direction to go for either line (red line is upstairs, and green line is the lower level). Only problem is that if an upper level escalator is closed, one must walk to the far end of the platform to exit, or transfer lines. A set of regular concrete stairs would be awesome! They can't break down! read more

8/25/22 I departed work on New Hampshire Ave. Hyattsville MD. 6495 landmark around 15:45 the rain caused me to have to catch the k6 to Fort Totten. The bus was proceeding up the hill reached the stop light until the cycle ended. I extended my arm out indicating I had a interest in boarding and wasn't standing there for shelter. As the bus proceeded I could see the bus driver making a commotion I was able to gather these words from her lips ( I see you waiting with such anger in her expression) when she pulled up I waved my hand to god for comfort and began my walk to Fort Totten. There is something drastically wrong with the customer service that is extended from people in the service industry. I only wanted the operator to know I wasn't seeking shelter for the storm to pass. We have got to treat each other better. Keep peace circulating around yourself and everyone attached to you. read more

I can't hate Fort Totten Metro Station even if I tried. I've been using Fort Totten Metro Station for YEARS now. I have a ton of comments, suggestions for improvement, and questions for the management (not necessarily in that order). Questions: The Metro Transit Police just built a facility adjacent to the Fort Totten Metro Station. Why can't they station an officer in the underpass in the morning to prevent drivers from dropping people off in the underpass thereby preventing other drivers from proceeding to the parking lot???? Also: why are the Metro Transit Police allowed to park their personal vehicles in the Fort Totten Metro Station parking lot under the guise of a torn down, movable "RESERVED SPACES" sign? When is metro going to build a multilevel parking structure at Fort Totten Metro Station (similar to the one recently built at Minnesota Ave Station)? When are the parking lot lights going to be fixed at Fort Totten Metro Station? If the lights in the parking lot are going to continuously be "out", howzabout an escort to my car from one of those Metro Transit Police who are taking up all the parking spaces anyway, by the way? Whose bright idea was it to rearrange all of the bus stops at Fort Totten Metro Station? Suggestions: Finally repair the huge, gaping pothole in the northbound lane of the underpass. Allow special parking for cars with DC license plates. Those Maryland cars take up all the spaces waaaaaay too early. Keep those noisy, teenage kids from congregating and smoking around the exit. So with all of these questions and suggestions, why all of the stars? See the Comments: I can get to and from Fort Totten Metro Station on two different buses, via automobile (if I plan to park, it has to be prior to 7:15 am, though), or on foot. While there, I do have access to the Red, Green, and sometimes Yellow line trains. And there are a number of bus lines that can take me just about anywhere else I want to go in the city, all for a fairly reasonable fare. I'll go out of my way to transfer at Fort Totten rather than one of the downtown stops. It's not only outside, but next to a park; a much less depressing place to wait for your train than the usual concrete tunnels. It's also much less crowded (this is all relative, mind you), and it's a useful transit hub for a variety of locations and travel methods. read more

A nice station to transfer from green to red, not crowded convenient transfer. However, it is outside, so don't make the mistake that I did and transfer on a cold, blustery night when the trains were single tracking. Sitting outside in the cold all of that time was less than pleasant. Great for sunny days though! read more

Free metered parking. End of story. (all the meters are "broken") though you can't park between like 3:30PM to 8PM (?) Definitely saved my butt when I ran inside to fill my SmartCard to park in the pay lot. I found a spot (lucky day) after circling twice. But honestly, that lot is PACKED. read more

Easy station to navigate, but hell to get in and out of. At least a third of the gates are broken and since this is a major metro for those coming from Maryland, the line backs up quickly when people don't have enough money on their metro cards. (The line to add money onto metro cards can also get long.) Frequently there are only two working gates to exit the station and everyone is rushing to get to their bus. Speaking of which, the bus stop for R1/R2 is miserable. It's always crowded and buses are almost always late. If it's raining, hope you have an umbrella or else you'll be waiting under the overpass. Pro: 7/11 across the street. Stock up on snacks because you will be waiting for that damn R2. read more

One star for parking. Everything else is ok. One day you will find parking-one day. That will be the day when someone hasnt double parked or when a govvie decides he/she doesnt want to wake out of bed in the morning. For such a small parking area, I do not understand how they come up with the designated parking for government workers and the handicapped. Its almost like metro isnt considering any percentages, thresholds or the increasing population at all. No stats at all. Apartments and condos are going up, but the metro parking situation is staying the same. Watch my photos for a lovely double parking job. It was the highlight of my morning lol. Oh and double/illegal parking is not the end of it. You will see cars on a curb or two. Dont even let it snow. I recall a car parked over 3 lines. read more

Good because it's a transfer station between the yellow, green, and red lines. Awful because WMATA doesn't know how to schedule trains and if you're trying to transfer to/from the red line you have a 90% chance of not making the transfer connection. Nothing like seeing your train pull away just as you descend the stairs and get on the platform. read more

Clean station but frequently crowded after 6pm when everyone is getting off when the yellow line ends here and having to wait to catch the green line to get to college park. read more

Riding to, from, or through Fort Totten is fine. Driving in to, out of, or parking at Fort Totten is horrible. The single lanes in and out are constantly backed up and the metro buses park and unboard passengers wherever they please. It is a madhouse and there are nowhere near enough parking spaces and they won't keep you from entering a full lot and then you have to pay to get out! read more
