There have been numerous times that I have traveled right through this stop and never used it. That is until I needed to run an errand before work one morning. This was always just another stop before I got to Union Station. Getting off here was easy, but getting out of the station had me a bit confused. I wasn't sure which way I needed to go and ended up going out the wrong exit my first visit here. The next visit, I ended up getting off the platform at the wrong area and had to do the long walk to the right exit out of here. I like the connectivity this stop has. Once street level no matter which way you go you are in the midst of NoMa. Completely walkable to a multitude of shops and local interests. Served by the Red Line you can get to anywhere in the DC and Maryland areas. read more

This location has not been on my radar since my husband suggested I avoid taking it by myself. Metro is convenient, especially during rush hour & when you don't want to drive. I only used this location since hubby was with me. It will probably be the last time I scan my metro card there. I felt uneasy along the walk to the station (especially after dark). There are unsavory characters that gather in groups. It is hard to avoid them. The blocks near Harris Teeter and the surrounding area have had construction. I will walk to Harris Teeter in daylight. I would not walk to this metro alone. The station is located near apartment buildings with people I would not hang out with. If I want to watch multiple drug deals, I will turn on my tv and view old cop shows. If you can't avoid this location, have a cross body bag/purse and don't listen to music until you are on the train. Be alert. read more

NoMa has an okay Metro station. It also is outdoors so it doesn't smell that bad. One of the better stations there is. Gallaudet University is also here so be mindful of the deaf. This is pretty clean compared to many others. Cleaner than many of the other stations are. It serves the Red Line. The main reason for it being cleaner is that it's outdoors. Area has a few attractions. Gallaudet University is located here. Because it's a deaf school, be mindful that many people at this station can't hear you so be careful. This is also close to Union Market, which is a cool place. Also there's typical chain places you see everywhere. This has quite a lot going on around here. It has some good escalators. It was renovated a few years ago so it's in much better shape than others. The area mostly is pretty safe. read more

You mean Florida/New York Ave Metro Station??? Oh, I'm sorry, it's now NOMA - aka "No, Ma, this ain't the hood." For real though, a few years ago, this place used to look and feel completely different - which could be called bad or good, depending on who you talk to. NoMa is one of the cleanest and most efficient metro stations I've ever been to, as I wrote in my tip. It's pretty safe - but there are a lot of panhandlers who hang out around here. All in all it's one of the better stations in WMATA's system, but keep in mind that it is a red line train, so expect "residual delays" throughout the day. read more

8/7/21 I like how Noma-Gallaudet is the new name for this station.  I have now forgotten what the old name for this station was.  Noma is an acronym for North Of Massachusetts in case you were wondering. Gallaudet is a college...no, a University for deaf and hard of of hearing students.  Back when I was young, I got the privilege to visit the campus for a tour and theater performance. The university was only for the deaf and hard of hearing.  I later heard some hearing people could study there, but couldn't live on campus. This might old rule might have been changed. Today I saw a summary back "in Fall 2017, Gallaudet enrolled 132 hearing students in its undergraduate degree programs. Of these 132, 82 were Hearing Undergraduate students. This was seven percent of the total undergraduate enrollment of 1,111 students."  I should say were making some progress.   My sign language is very rusty, but I remember my professor saying, "remember your classifiers if all else fails to get your message across."  One of my favorite examples is making an E sign.  Separate  your hand to wide and your not just saying E... but letting your friend(s) know you don't approve, don't like, or think what you are seeing is horrid. I am truly digressing,  but this is just one aspect of the station who's name is on the board for all to see. Speaking about seeing, a lot of developers have fixed up this area which use to be overwhelmingly trashy.   I have seen developers looking a some of the housing near Noma/Gallaudet Station  and talk about tearing down the slum housings  to build high rises housing with shops underneath.   The Washington Coliseum concert where The Beatles played on Feb. 11th, 1964  was once such place that has been demolished.    Some of the old housing I have seen in the past; as well as empty land  has now been  snatch up to build  experience housing poor are not likely going to be able to afford.   I had the feeling back in 2017 many of the DC residents were going to lose their homes to the development that wanted their land.  I suspect many got a raw deal for their houses/land.  Whatever the case is, the high rise appartments are being built.     The old Burger King near second street was turned into a high rise and givena  name I don't  remember. This place does look better and I see more diversity around the area now than I did  17 years ago. However,  there are still bums, drug addicts and homeless can still be found among the new look the developers of Washington D.C are trying to make.    Some of these people panhandle and can get quite aggressive. Personally, the improvements of the area make the outlook of a trashy area look better and more inviting.   People don't wish to see or step in human excrement on the street. I have seen this many times. The Marriott Courtyard US Capitol is one such place that turned  this area around.  I saw Subway, Five Guys, Domino's Pizza, 7 Eleven and two other stores on the block of 2nd.    This hotel right by Noma-Gallaudet Station is what draws many people here.   Whether it's going to The bureau of alcohol tobacco firearms and explosives, Gallaudet University, meetings/conferences, sightseeing, concerts, Live Action Role Playing, adultry or a little bit of everything all rolled into one. The area is not what it is to be.  Things have changed for the better...well that depends on who you ask or what you think. When getting off the train,  I looked behind me and saw The Marriott Courtyard US Capitol  looking back at me. A place I use to work at long ago. Even the name of this hotel will change soon.  Many things like the firing of staff to make room for the new owners and staff has been going on.  Just part of the life changed happing here. Nevertheless,  if I had more time, I would have explored the areas of Noma/Gallaudet to see what more has changed.   Still, from what I saw, more change is coming to an area that use to be predominantly black. I myself prefer diversity  and that is what is happening here. read more

One of the cleanest Metro stations I've been to, probably recently renovated. It's still in a developing neighborhood, not as sketchy as Rhode Island Avenue Metro and not as busy as Union Station. The station is outdoors and covered but has limited seating! Convenient to various restaurants including Moe's, Five Guys, Mint (Indian food), Au Bon Pain, Roti, Potbelly, and others; Harris Teeter grocery store; several hotels; TD Bank, and the infamous Dave Thomas Circle, an intersection of major streets (New York Avenue, Florida Avenue, Eckington Place, 1st Street), and an immense danger to pedestrians, especially those too busy on their phones while crossing. read more

Really a big station that's so clean. Seriously compared to others this one is immaculate. This station is above ground and open with a covered platform. Clearly a newer facility. I want to say definitely under ten years old. Easy to commute in and out from this locale. read more

Great metro station. Very clean, two entrances for added convenience, and I also have found that the station managers here are better than most. I don't know what there is really to complain about here. Definitely if you're considering getting on at Union Station, go to NoMa. It's way less crowded and you're likelier to get a seat heading into downtown than you are from Union Station. It's also a heck of a lot more pleasant. read more

Ok. Rating this metro station after using it for a year. This is a large, open station. Unlike some of the other metro stations outside of downtown it has multiple escalators going up and down so when one of them invariably isn't working then there most likely is another one in the direction you want to go. The station platform is covered but open to the wind so can be chilly in the winter. You can stay down in the entrance lobby after going through the turnstiles. They have boards with the next train in both directions listed so you can stay out of the elements if you want to. Not very much seating on the platform or the downstairs, wish they would add some more. I'm not sure how much of this is Metro vs individual station manager discretion but this station seems to be cleaner than some of the others. It seems to be pressure washed on a semi regular schedule so grime doesn't build up as much. Wish all the stations were like this. The turnstiles are easy to jump and from what some reviewers have said, the staff can sometimes be indifferent. Haven't seen any of this personally but hopefully they'll cut down on it. Some beggars outside on the side with the ATF and 7-Eleven side. Can't get around that. All in all not a bad experience. The station is near a Au bon Pain, Dunkin Donuts, 7-Eleven, Five Guys, Wunderbar Beer Garden, and walking distance to Union Market (up Florida Ave) and Harris Teeter. read more

I frequent DC but this was my first time at the NoMa Metro Station. It's the red line and easy to take to the main parts of DC. We took it to the Verizon center with no problems. As per all DC metros, the amount you pay depends on where you go (which I hate!). This metro center was in a safe enough area. It was built in 2010 I believe and it still feels new and modern. There are the typical ticket machines as well as the token employee in the booth. No panhandlers nearby. Screens announcing your next train are easily seen. Overall an easy and pleasant experience. read more

NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro Station - Platform - Public Transportation Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Great station. Could use more seating though. Wide open. Great views all around. Located in the business district. Runs on-time. Near a sub-shop, Five guys burgers and fries and Au Bon Pain. Great for business travelers and out-of-towners. Why? Marriott is on the same block as this stop. Same side of the street in the middle of the block. It is the business district so don't expect a ton of "life/action" around here, but maybe that isn't what you're looking for. Union station is about three stops away and only a few minutes travel. There was an attendant here that was very helpful in advising whether to purchase unlimited pass for the day or to purchase reusable card that gave you a discount on rides. read more

Exits (with fare machines) on both the north and south sides provide easy neighborhood and bike trail access. Escalators are too frequently closed for repairs, alas, causing you to take slightly longer routes to/from the platform. The south exit is susceptible to small backups at the faregates if one of the three is malfunctioning. Please install at least a fourth faregate here. There is a lot of exposure to the elements on the platform but you enjoy a decent view of the neighborhood. This station is much less crowded than Union Station and in a safer neighborhood than Rhode Island Avenue (per MPD crime statistics). This has been my home station for three years and the station managers are not proactive. read more

Three and a half stars. DC's newest (and probably last, at least for the immediate future) Metro Station, the how-many-names-can-we-put-on-a-Metro-station-and-still-leave-out-a-neighborhood opened to much fanfare in 2004. Local business owners (Doug Jemal being a big one) helped finance it with the obvious increased property values in mind; naturally, development has followed, including a hotel, two coffee shops, and most recently, a Harris Teater. The biggest winners however, are the people, since it has given residents of Near Northeast, Eckington, Truxton Circle, and parts of Bloomingdale a much-needed Metro within easy walking distance and finally gave Gallaudet, the only university by this point without one, a Metro station to call their own. Having said all that, the station is above ground, so winter days are a cold wait, and for a new station with covered escalators, they have been out of order much of the time. Additionally, the McKinley High students can get a bit rowdy at times. read more

The best part about this station is that you can see from 2nd street if your train is coming, and if it is, you know it's time to hustle through the gates and up that long escalator or you're probably going to be waiting 15 minutes for the next red line, especially at off hours. I hate outdoor stations, especially in the winter, so this is a huge con. Another con is the insane amount of kids that seem to get on at this stop. They seem to congregate in packs of at least 10 and get pretty rowdy. There's an Au Bon Pain and a DD in the immediate vicinity-that's a plus. It's not a far walk from union market. It's easy to get an Uber from here too-big plus! read more

(Sigh). No, you can't just make up new abbreviated names for a neighborhood to make it cool. The New York Avenue-ahem-"NoMa" stop is walkable from some downtown areas and is a relatively appealing aboveground stop with a large fenced-in area leading to escalators that actually work because it was renovated recently. read more

I like how there is a overhead so when it rains you are safe. However, the floor is really slipery when it is wet outside. Be careful when you go down the escalator. You can slip really easily if you aren't careful when its raining outside. read more

Location is good, especially for a traveler the Courtyard right there is great. This location is still clean and relatively free of crazies and panhandlers. The screens are easy to see from most areas of the platform and trains run on time. Why is the escalator always broken when I come to town? This is a (relatively)NEW station! read more

Review based on 7-11am and 5-8pm commute and ATF exit. Outdoor above ground station on the Red Line. When it's cold and windy out, wear a jacket! When it's hot as balls or raining, stay in the covered areas. Escalator I swear doesn't work (5-8pm) 3 out of 5 days. Buttons inside the elevator doesn't seem to do anything OR just takes forever to process the up/down request. Station manager is generally no where to be found or busy BSing with people (friends maybe) to pay any attention to turnstile hoppers. DAILY, I see people hopping the turnstiles and NOT paying. Why should I have to pay then?! Then there are the occasional homeless guys and beggars outside of the station asking for change right as you come out. Occasionally, there will be someone performing (music, singing, etc.) outside the station. Immediately outside the station there is a Au Bon Pain, 7-11, Marriott, Five-Guys, Dunkin Donuts, and A Deli. ATF across the street and a bunch more food/shopping establishments around the corner as well. read more
