Here we go again, Winnie becomes a true tourist even though I was born and raised in the Big Apple. I can name a million spots that has an amazing view of New York, but Fort Totten is one of those hidden gems from Queens! There's a parking lot where you can park your car, and you can walk over near the rocks to view the Throgs Neck Bridge. It's truly a beautiful scenery. I would recommend seeing the sunset there. This is an awesome park to go to with your date, especially at night. Plentiful of parking and you can walk out onto the rocks, bring a flashlight at night. Parking lot is well lit. You have a nice view of the Throgs neck bridge and the beautiful water. It's also a good place for fresh air, plenty of trees around. There is also a bike path which I haven't tried out yet. Great place for couples and families, friends...basically anyone looking for an outdoor adventure​. This place is absolutely beautiful. I saw bike riders, skateboarders, families with strollers, joggers, casual walkers. Fort Totten is welcoming to all ages. Free parking, decently maintained. Restrooms on site, a pool (drained when I visited​ (November), and a playground. Many historical​ buildings with interesting stories. Great place to take a walk by the water. I would totally avoid waking out by the rocks and into the water, I can totally see someone slipping (no bueno). The parking situation is not terrible! Great for a Sunday afternoon walk with family and kids, good family crowd. They have activities scheduled very often. The location is very convenient and the the views are pretty awesome! I can see couples coming here at night for a romantic walk. I can see this place getting really crowded when it gets warmer! Just don't trust walking on those rocks! read more

Amazing park. Very relaxing with beautiful view. Nice walkway with benches. Parking lot can be crowded sometimes and public bathrooms only open during the day (evening/night closed). Ice cream truck is also there from time to time. You can see people fishing, riding their bikes or just sitting in their camping chairs enjoying the view. Beautiful sunset, definitely worth to visit! I was selected to participate in a historical night tour of this park via the NYC Parks Department website and of course I was late and missed the tour group. I was pissed. com. However, I took advantage of being in the park and walked around a little on my own with my teenaged goddaughter. The park was very big and it was dark so we didn't venture out too far on our own. The views of the Throgsneck Bridge against the water and lights at night were breathtaking. We saw paths for you to walk, run or ride bikes. There was plenty of parking which was good. I definitely will return to this park to check out so many things we missed. This is definitely a park to check out and take advantage of another of our city's beautiful parks. read more

Beautiful park with historical Civil War fort. Went on a tour of the Fort including underground tunnels that are not normally opened to the public. Learned about the tour through their website. The tour was very interesting as the two tour guides /rangers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Went for a walk around the grounds afterwards which has gorgeous views and historical buildings. This park is pretty big. We were here so many times, never seen this park crowded before. It's a great park to jog, walk, relax, enjoying a view of Throgs Neck Bridge while watching the sunset. This park is originally built as a civil war fortress, now it's a shared site for New York Fire Department, the U.S. Army Reserve, the U.S. Coast Guard, & a public park. If you're a history buff, you'll have a good time here in this park. There is a spooky lantern tours every Halloween. Stop by the visitor center to find out the exact date. read more

Cars that are allowed up because of a special permit speed through(starting about 20 feet) before security. Then, race around the fort (where the park is) at scary, dangerous speeds! You'll be walking casually through the area to the park, and all of sudden, need to make a mad, kids in tow, to one side. Please, check and correct this before someone gets hit! read more

Honestly I've always liked coming to Fort Totten to take photos and just walk around and relax. When I was a kid I played baseball here and so the place is always nostalgic to me. Recently the 6th game of thrones chair was placed here and I was lucky enough to get there the day it was placed! I didn't have to wait on that huge line! It was extremely awesome! read more

I love this park because of the beautiful views and well maintained path. There are rocks to climb on and benches to sit on. You can walk, run, roller blade, or bike. You can also bring you dog or have a picnic. The only reason I dont love this park is because it gets very crowded sometimes and parking can be tricky. Other than that its a great park. read more

Really love this place in the summer. With a view of the water, and the throngs neck bridge, why not relax with a book with beautiful scenery as a backdrop? I like either laying on a blanket in the grass; or if I'm feeling adventurous I'll wander on to the rocks. No permit required for the parking lot as far as I know, which is amazing for Queens. If you're into history, you can check out the actual fort too. They had fireworks the week of the 4th of July so we got to walk the grounds a bit on our way there. Can't wait to go back once the weather warms up again! read more

There are 2 pages for Fort Totten on Yelp and I just went there today so I am just posting on this one today. The pool was open and crowded. My advice to grown women, don't stare at other women ,why not just go for a swim or read instead of staring, get a life! Even the life guard told them to get a life! I have seen children collide on their bikes frequently while there. Now very aggressive moms with strollers will mow you down as well! At Fort Totten there are bike tours, a swimming pool a view of Long Island Sound,there is bird watching, a haunted house on Halloween for children, games, performances , and canoeing. The Fort is a New York City Historic District and the Club a Designated Landmark. Quite the view from the parking lot but other than that, this is a rather boring park. Only authorized vehicles are granted access into Fort Totten. The signs for restrooms are absolutely false. We couldn't find a public restroom in every direction we walked. They had some porto potties in random sections of the park. We did come across a swimming pool but when we arrived, they closed it off. There are a handful of rules before entering Fort Totten. Pets are not allowed. Not many friendly people here and there's just a lack of amenities for the public here. I wouldn't bother walking through Fort Totten ever again unless they added some features to their park. The best part was just the view of the bridge. I wish parks like this and Flushing Meadows Corona Park would have a outdoor running track. All of that real estate for nothing... Such a shame as they waste tons of water on acres of empty lawns. read more

Fort Totten used to be our go-to place to chill in high school. This was before the fancy renovations with the slicked out parking lot and an actual running path. Instead, we'd park on the crappiest lot ever, and mosey over to the jutting rocks. We always made sure to wear sturdy footwear because those rocks are jagged, and for someone short like me, hopping from one to the next could spell out disaster if I'm not careful. Thankfully, our cell phones all have flashlights now and we don't have to just depend on moonlight to get us out to the end. It's definitely a unique place to hang out and now work out, apparently, as there were lots of rollerbladers and joggers on the path. This once was the fort that became the Project Nike air defense site. I am glad it is now defunct and most of the fort is now a beautiful pristine park surounded by water, the Long island Sound. The park has sweeping views of the Throgs Neck Bridge and although I am not a fan of Bayside, this park almost makes up for everything else. On a nice day like today, it is a perfect spot to bring a blanket/chair, read, lounge and just enjoy the wonderful weather and sunshine. Along the Cross Island Parkway, there is a path that runs parallel to the Long Island Sound that is 2.4 miles one way. Great for a afternoon run! This is an outdoor lover's paradise! Do give a try sometime when in the area ;-) read more

Oh man, forget going to one of the 7 wonders of the world this place is amazing I love it, so many great memories as a kid here. The place itself is renovated, it's still being worked on the parking lot is a little smaller but you know what it's still amazing. Fishing here is amazing. Park technically closes at 9pm but the cops that come and check are pretty cool, as long as you don't look suspicious then you will be okay here, just smile and you'll be fine. When your walking on the rocks beware there are mice (rats) but their not as big as the subway rats so you'll be fine. There's so many hidden spots to hang out and go fishing here (check the tides before coming) Great place to study, jog, picnic, Craigslist exchanges, first dates and an amazing place to bring people who are visiting New York this way they can take photos. If your coming here for the ruins of Fort Totten or a wilderness experience, rethink your trip. That being said it does have some interesting elements, and is closer to Govenors Island before they put all that money into it. Their is little actual park consisting more of a small military base that has been mostly abandoned and left to ruin, like Govenors Island you can't access the great old buildings but their fun to walk by. The park part consists of a huge lawn in the center, the small but nice old base outdoor pool, a small playground and ball field, and a jetty. Not a lot of nature here but a hell of a view of the bridge. The pictures you see of the old fort would make your think you can access them but most of that is locked and only available to see on certain event days. It's best to come here for an event as there isn't that much to do, though it's nice to be able to ride your bike on paved streets relatively worry free about cars. Of course their is some FDNY EMT presence and cost guard but honestly it's minimal. Not many stores nearby so if you don't have a car pack a lunch, this place is more of a spot for locals to walk their dogs and well, themselves I suppose, which I think is an honest assessment. Probably not worth a pilgrimage, fun, but if your looking for a big park consider nearby Cunningham or Alley Pond. read more

Nice place! We mostly came to sit in the car to enjoy the view of the sunsetting behind the Throgs Neck Bridge and the East River while having deep conversations... One night we went with a friend and walked on rocks that sit on top of the river. It was so dark and cold. I enjoyed the slight thrill of being in danger of falling in. The last time we were there we parked a bit further from the scenery but decided to move closer, and closer as the sun set. Each time we moved, we noticed that a man with blonde hair wearing a suit in a white car kept parking next to us. WHAT A CREEP. ...And we never went back again. read more

NYPD, FDNY, Army Reserves and Coast Guard Reserves have offices here so a smattering of buildings share the land with towering, age-old trees. Throggs Neck bridge is visible and the water is habitated by migrating geese and other water fowl. The battery itself was closed when we visited, it looked overgrown and rundown from afar. Will revisit in the summer to fully appreciate this park. Ample parking is available outside the park gates and free admission. We saw kids clambering up the giant tree branches and several dogs enjoying a run with their owners. There's also a well-maintained playground in the middle of the park. read more

Cool spot to ride bikes ... picnic by the river even bbq . Tons of wide open space for the kiddies to run around . Dogs are welcomed . There's also a public pool . Baseball and soccer fields . I didn't notice any basketball courts or playgrounds but we also didn't walk the grounds entirely . Oh and there's technically no public parking inside the fort but there's a huge lot in front of the entrance which is closed by 9pm . All in all this place is extremely well maintained . A great place to run but there isn't much to do here. There is a great view of the bridge if you stay close to the edge of the park. Not sure if there was parking inside the area but I couldn't find it. I had to park in the nearby neighborhood first. A major plus is that there is a large soccer field, two of them side by side and is usually not occupied. I brought my friends dog here and let her loose. She ran to her hearts content. read more

The walk made out of huge boulders is so romantic and beautiful at night. We go there whenever we need a breath of fresh air. The rocks are slippery to walk on towards the end (near the Throgs Neck Bridge). Definitely wear comfy sneakers! or have them ready in the car~ Only bad thing I could say is it smells of urine towards the end because people tend to get drunk at night there with a group of friends and some of them unfortunately pee on the rocks. It has a great view of the Throgs Neck Bridge. I've actually never been inside the actual Fort and reading the other reviews I plan to do so. :D read more
