Stopped here while on a road trip through Northern California. Gravel, spacious lot conveniently located off the highway and next door to a pet supplies store, perfect for us! Our girls made friends with the crowd here on Saturday, running and playing with the friendly locals. Doggie bags, fresh water, chairs, and dog toys available for visitors. CAUTION: No people potty here, unless you're cool with popping a squat...when in Rome, right?

The park is right off highway 101 at the 12th street exit in Fortuna, right next to Fortuna Feed and Garden Center. The whole area is fully fenced, it has a separate area for small dogs as well as running water and watse stations.Every time we've been there people are friendly and the dogs have so much fun playing with other dogs in a safe, off leash area. It is becoming a fast favorite for locals and tourists!

Dog park rules. No dogs without humans!

The many old growth redwood groves are interesting and beautiful to saunter through. Way finding is easy and park maps and internet resources make for a wonderful road trip. Visitor centers are well stocked, have clean bathrooms with ample parking. Volunteer staff are well informed and helpful. Trails are well marked and very clean. Surprising lack of random trash so volunteers and visitors do a great job. We have learned over the past few years to avoid the crowds and cost of visiting National Parks in California when we are truly blessed with such exceptional California park options. This park is amazing and fascinating with manageable visitor sizes. Take the time to experience the area small towns too!

My destination was the Tall Tree, and I passed miles of banana slugs, moss, lichen, spring wildflowers, and the refreshing surge of Bull Creek with its turquoise hues. The park was far from crowded, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Park Staff tending the maintenance needs (weed abatement). I felt safe & incredibly relaxed on the trail. There are over 100 miles of trail in this park and plenty of river access, providing something for everyone. If you only drive through the Avenue of the Giants, it will be time well spent in this gorgeous paradise.

The restrooms aren't bad, unless you're high maintenance and need a clean restroom. For me, it's camping, you get what you get! If you expect luxury get a hotel. The camp host is accommodating and very nice. I would recommend bringing your own camp fire wood or getting it from a near by store because the camp fire wood that is sold by the camp host is sometimes too moist to start a fire.

The lagoon has little to no water current and has long areas of shallow water, making it perfect for small children and family fun without needing to be worried about losing a loved one in a traumatic mistake. Eek. The lagoon is gorgeous, just watch out for lightning storms in the winter. Aside from the lagoon and renting kayaks, many people travel to Agate Beach (just a quarter mile walk) to collect, you guessed it Agates. But because of rough surf and currents, it's not safe to take toddlers or people who are candidates for hip replacement surgery. If you include Patrick's Point to this Recreation area, there are 3 awesome camp grounds. You can choose camping under redwood trees, camping in meadows, on the beach, or overlooking the lagoon. Side note: Patrick's Point has day use sites that have unique fire pits and bbq's! Large stone sculptures with grills. The Big Lagoon/Patrick's Point Recreation Area is also 15 minutes away from Trinidad. This city has a great independent grocery store and is resplendent with eateries that have breathtaking views. The area is remote and for that reason not a lot of people hang out here. If it was in SF or LA there be a year's waiting list to get reservations. But I so Far (knock on wood), there's always empty sites.
