We had brunch for mothers day in the convention room the food was good but they could have had more meat options.

Wonderful place to do all kinds of fun things. Planning an event with a Maid of Honor, so excited this summer will be great.

We stayed for a weekend wedding that was in the area. Room was clean but could use some upgrades. Morning breakfast buffet was priced well but food could have been warmer. I did really well with my slot play. That's where the extra star came from. All staff were friendly and helpful. read more

We stayed here to golf at The Wilderness, play some blackjack, and do some hiking at MN State parks. We had a nice stay. Our room was clean and very large. We didn't get a king sized bed but slept well in two double beds. The water pressure in the shower was excellent. The TV clear and a good size. We even had a nice balcony overlooking the woods. Breakfast was free with a stay. Breakfast had a great fresh fruit buffet. The other items were pretty standard fair (eggs, carved ham, hashbrowns). I enjoyed the cinnamon raisin bread but I wish they would have had real oatmeal. Our blackjack table was a ton of fun. We stayed thru a couple of dealers and they were all fun and entertaining and really rooting for us to win. So much fun. Dinner was at the Sunset Steakhouse. It's higher priced and my meal didn't live up to the cost but it was still pretty good. I had a New York strip and garlic mashed potatoes with asparagus. The 3 small spears of asparagus could have been a bit larger portion. Steak and potatoes were good. Staff was super nice. The only odd thing was the fire alarm had gone off and it was on for probably over an hour, maybe close to 2 hours. Not sure what was happening but no one in danger, just really annoyed by the noise. read more

This quite literally might be the worst bar I've ever been to. Granted I'm from the east coast... but how do you not know what an espresso martini is. I would've completely understood/accepted a response of "I'm sorry we can't make that here". But I got an extremely rude and sassy "you want vodka... in your coffee..?". Lol yes actually I do (and it's not an uncommon drink)? Then I tried to settle and asked for an Irish coffee or White Russian and SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THOSE WERE. Old lady with dark hair. Literally horrifically poor bartending/service. She just made me feel like crap for ordering a drink that she should've known how to make but didn't. This place is terrible with rude employees. All of the bartenders just laughed at me after that. Like wtf? I literally just asked for vodka and coffee. I guess it was just too complicated for them to wrap their brains around. I have been there a few times and it was horrible. The slots are so tight the the picture of Lincoln on a penny would squeal. I ordered a pop as other people around me ordered alcohol. They got there drinks but I didn't. Instead of people walking around helping people the staff seemed to congregate stood and talked to each other instead of helping people having problems with their machines. I will not go back. We are staying here for a wedding out of town and at first glance upon walking in it seemed like it was going to be a great place to stay. That's where it ended for us. 1. There's no place on a SATURDAY to get a cocktail in a non-smoking area before 4:00 pm. We were just trying to have a glass of wine or something before the wedding and couldn't. 2. The walls are paper thin. Some folks decided they weren't going back to their room until 4:00am and they just so happened to be the room next to us. They also proceeded to talk and laugh for 30 minutes. I should also mention.... 3. After rolling around in bed for 4 hours restless because of how excruciatingly uncomfortable the bed is, we were finally in a state of deep sleep and those idiots ruined that. I would encourage you to take a look at the quality of your beds, pillows, weekend cocktail hour, and pull back a bit on the air fresheners in the vents. This was my second time visiting the tamarack buffet at fortune bay casino. Although it's much smaller than the typical casino buffet it makes up for it with quality . We had the Sunday brunch with a nice variety of classic breakfast fare as well as plenty of lunch choices . The prices were quite reasonable at $14 . I have been to probably 20 - 25 casino buffets across the country over many years and this is absolutely the best one .Next time in the tower or Ely area I will gladly go back . read more

Food was good, not the best for the price. Main reason for the 3 stars is for how rude the worker was at our blackjack table. She was happy when we lost and said some rude things when we were just trying to make conversation. The facility is nice and I would come back barring everything but the one employee who didn't want our business. read more

Very disappointed. 8 dads on a father-son snowmobile ride (17 in total) decided to book at Fortune Bay Casino after not finding a VRBO that could accommodate us, big mistake. The staff seems unhappy and unappreciative of the guests, not just one, most. There was one waitress that was somewhat pleasant, otherwise it was as if you are a burden to them. As far as their COVID Protocols, good luck figuring them out. No signs about their special rules, but yet constant harassment..Don't stand here! Don't congregate there! (While being fully masked) you can only be here for so long! It was bizarre . They are incredibly over the top on their COVID protocols. Way more than the state mandates. We are agreeable and compliant with wearing masks and want to be courteous to other guests, but they were very rude about it. It was so bad, we dreaded going back to the casino at the end of every day of riding. We had fun on the trails, and made good memories with our kids, but we will absolutely never be back to Fortune Bay Casino. read more

Smoking inside? What? As an East coaster, I was shocked to find this still exists. Stayed here for a night after spending the day on the lake. We had a beautiful view of the lake from our room, and a balcony which was great for airing out smoky clothes. The room was clean, and did not smell smoky, but the wall are super thing. There was a family next door with young children, and we could hear everything. We didn't go to the casino until 10pm or so, played a few slots, which was fun. Interestingly, it seems that there is absolutely no food available after 10, which was weird. There was a soda fountain and coffee available though. read more

This place was by far be most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in. We checked in to find hairs all over the pillows, sheets, and bathtub. The bathroom floor was sticky and the whole place reeked of cigarette smoke. If you have to choose between here and air bnb a cabin... pick the cabin. The four stars will go for their prime rib dinner on Friday and Saturday nights at the Tamarack Buffet. I think it's the best prime rib I have ever had, and I am usually not a fan. It's worth it just for that with the location being in the middle of nowhere. :D As for our hotel room we had a king suite kind of thing with a balcony, it was nice, however, I felt the room was a little dingy. Like the closets could have used some vacuuming and I wasn't sure if the fan in the bathroom was broken or the air just regularly circulates throughout the room? I would come back for the buffet for the prime rib, that's for sure. read more

5 out of 6 days there were no poker table open and pit bosses were not willing to open one for 3 of us. I understand the COVID thing, but there were 3 black jack tables open each night with one or two players playing. Total, not per table. We just stayed at the Fortune Bay casino resort. we had people in the room next-door to us who were having a huge fight. they were banging doors, children were running up and down the hallways and slamming the door to their room. The noise kept getting louder and louder. It was only 8:30 in the evening. I called the front desk and asked for someone to come and talk to them about the noise. I was told that they would not intervene unless it was after 11 PM. when the noise continued and got louder, I called the front desk again and told them I was concerned about the children and that it was very disturbing to our evening. They repeated the message that they would not do anything until after 11 PM for their policy. The third time I called I told them that the next call I was going to make was 911. Someone did finally come and talk to them. Shortly after that, the two people who were yelling at each other, slam the door and or left and slammed the door. The next morning we were checking out I spoke to a manager, told them my concerns, including other things that were wrong with the room. He repeated their policy and did nothing. This hotel does not care about their customers and has no intention of making this a better place to stay. They also add on taxes and fees and service charges for nothing and do not disclose that until you check out. The casino is small and an interesting. The golf course was great, and I would play there again, but I will never stay at that hotel again, and would not recommend that anyone else does either. read more

Upon entering the casino looks fairly nice and clean. As soon as my group and i enter the harping of the impolite employees begins. Almost every single member of our 10 person group was given a "warning" for things we are doing wrong. If you want to be treated like a 5 year old with super strict parents this is the place for you!! Multiple rude experiences with staff will for sure leave you with a bad taste in your mouth when you walk out. The employees acted like high schoolers and had nothing kind to say. The only good thing about the casino was the food, needless to say I believe this Casino is a joke to all casinos. read more

Golf - Big Yes; Marina - Yes; Food - STAY AWAY; Lodging - Not great I'm from MN but since moved to the big city and brought my family back for a last-minute vacation on Lake Vermilion. The area resorts were all booked so I decided to give Fortune Bay a try. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The resort looks great, the golf course is challenging and beautiful and the marina has a good selection of boats for fishing (only 1 ski boat). But looking a little closer, you'll find the glitz wears off quickly. We booked a "two-bedroom" King suite promoted as having 2 separate bedrooms. In reality it's a bedroom with a separate living space that has a wall bed. The wall bed creaks every time you move in it. The walls were so thin and the plumbing so bad we literally heard the whistling and screeching of pipes when any of our neighbors - upstairs, downstairs or on either side -- took a shower. And speaking of showers, the shower curtains are about 8" too short ensuring you have a floor full of water after taking one yourself. Bed linens consisted of a sheet and one of those thin, budget velvet blankets our parents bought to save money when we were kids. The main restaurant (Tamarack) is inexpensive but I suspect its the only way they can get people to eat there. I'm not a snooty eater -- I love Waffle House and iHop for breakfasts but found the Tamarack extremely disappointing, even for breakfast. The casino deli is anything but -- they serve processed cold cuts you'd find in the packaged food isle of a grocery store. My turkey sandwich was inedible. As a side note - if you do choose to stay -- be sure to eat at the Vermilion Club for dinner and SuLu's Espresso Cafe for breakfast or lunch!! Would I stay there again? -- only if I had too. There are very few places in the area for lodging and some of the resorts are quite rustic so it may be your only choice. Just just keep in mind, this hotel is more like a budget motel than a real casino. Anything over $100 is too much to spend on a room here - even for a suite. read more

You can smoke indoors! This seems to be the "war cry" of many of the pale octogenarians that sit surrounded by the aura of neon lights and flashing buttons asking them to "max bet!" Fortune Bay Resort and Casino is on the Iron Range of Minnesota. Many people know northern Minnesota from the movie "North Country." I've been here for two days and met more women who could kick Charlize Theron's butt with two hands tied behind their backs. But the resort, it's incredible. I'm writing this surrounded by beautiful white snow (granted there is a blizzard going on outside). It blankets acres upon acres of meticulously cared for and crafted grounds. And if it wasn't for the smoking and flashing lights, you wouldn't even know there was a casino not 30 yards from your hotel room suite. The casino is your typical middle-of-nowhere not-your-regular-Vegas games. The blackjack tables are hot (I walked out with more than I started with) and the dealers are super friendly. All in all, even with the smoking, if you're on your way to the boundary waters for some canoing, Fortune Bay Resort and Casino is worth a stop. And as the sign says, it's just a few miles north of ordinary. read more

I bring a group golf trip here every year and it is one of the highlights of the summer. Golf course is stunningly spectacular, hotel rooms are clean, the food is great and the casino is fun. Everything needed for a great getaway. Beautiful Lake Vermillion is also close by. read more

I tracked to a lot of casino in the country and this casino is the worst place I have ever been. They have to have the lowest possible percentage playbacks legally allowed. It is really a bad place. If you want even a snowballs chance in hell at winning, don't bother wasting your money here. Black bear is so much better in every way. And if you are looking for that small casino feel, try deer river. It literally felt like throwing my money away. Pretty sure the state should investigate the machines as it seemed they were way outside the legal limits. The buffet was cheap, and that's how it tasted. Dinner looked like leftovers from lunch. Hotel room was nice, but seemed way bigger than it needed to be. Large areas with nothing in them. We had enough room for a couch or two. Over all, terrible place to eat, stay, or gamble. PROS: This is a great place to go or stay if you are trying to escape from city. It is surrounded by trees and wildlife which is a cool feel if you're use to city lights and skyscrapers. The hotel staff are friendly, rooms have high ceilings and balconies. The room which I'm staying in has a fireplace, kitchen, living room and a king size bed in its very own bedroom. The best part is the room was only $75! It's regularly $95 but if you have a players club card you save $20! The snack bar I ate at was also delicious. CONS: Nobody at the entrance to the casino checking IDs. The only reason this concerns me is because when I was waiting for my food at the snack bar I witnessed a young couple with there newborn in the casino. With cigarette smoke filling the air I don't think a casino is a place for a child, not to mention it was also 12:30am. Casino's in Minnesota are 18+ let's keep it that way. The food at the buffet was fresh and very good. While the buffet isn't huge like at some casinos, the quality is far superior than the others I've eaten at. Another plus is that while there I misplaced my phone and didn't realize it until after I had left the casino. When I went back 10 minutes later, the staff had already located it and had it stored safely in their office. Thank you staff of Fortune Bay! read more
