FYI: If you're planning to go during the government shutdown, you can't drive all the way to the parking lot -- it's about an 8-mile hike (a lot of it on gravel). But honestly, it's worth every step! Just when you think you've reached the falls... you haven't. Keep going! The road in is pure washboard -- about 13 miles of bump city -- so make sure you have a 4-wheel drive and that nothing inside your car is loose. Fossil Creek is absolutely stunning, and bonus -- no permit needed after October 1st. The other thing says this trail is easy. No, it's not to be careful if you're taking somebody elderly over that doesn't have good mobility because there's some rocks you had a climb and what not also make sure you take plenty of water to drink and a little snack everything you pack in your pack. I would also suggest leaving the house by three 330. No later you don't wanna be hiking in the pitch dark. read more

I didn't know anything about this place beforehand. If my boss had never been here and my cousin had never told me about the Permit, I would've made a wasted trip. I wish I knew more before going. I need to know more information about how things work at Fossil Creek. Even after going, though we enjoyed ourselves, I still don't know how it works. There were no signs telling you where you can access trails to get to the creek. You just had to guess. I found a trail at our Homestead parking lot, but it was very steep and a little dangerous. We found a spot okay in the shade but was very small for our party of 6. We worked so hard getting down there that we just made it work. After leaving we went up the road a little way in our vehicle to see what the other spots looked like, but I saw no bridge or easy access from The Bridge parking lot either, and the road was just way too bumpy. I hope my wife's suspension is okay on her Mazda CX-5. The information before going should've told us about the road and what to expect, basically how to plan. It's all a guessing game. I could've asked the Ranger lady more questions, but I didn't know what to ask. My boss made things sound different. Apparently you can't drive people to the waterfall trailhead anymore. You have to walk over 2 miles on a dusty dirt road in over 100 degrees with vehicles driving by kicking up dust. That makes no sense whatsoever. We enjoyed our time at the water. Everything else leading up to it and after it we could've done without. I don't see us coming back unless we have someone with better suspension and/or better knowledge of the area. Loved this day trip in Arizona. It was so fun to do an easy hike then be rewarded with an amazing waterfall and crisp fresh water. The water was cold but you get used to it quick when it's hot outside. To come to Fossil Creek and the waterfall, you must first book tickets online via recreation.gov. Tickets become available a month immediately advance around 8am and they go quick! Ideally, you want to aim for lot 1 or lot 2, as they are the closest to the waterfall. The other lots are further away so you'll have a far hike if you want to make it all the way to the main waterfall. From Lot 1 named Dixon Lewis, the hike is only about 1 mile each way (2 miles round trip) and it's moderate. Not too hard. From lot 2, it's like an extra half or full mile on top of that since it's further. We had lot one so our hike was only 1 or 1.1 miles. The hike is beautiful. You will see tons of plants and the occasional lizard or cool bird. You can also hear and see the creek in different areas and will encounter different smaller water falls. Keep going and you'll be rewarded with the big finale, a larger water fall with plenty of room to swim. Some people like to jump from the top as well and there is space under the water fall to swim under or go through the side to stand on or sit so it's pretty cool. I definitely recommend bringing a ton of water to stay hydrated! Being comfortable hiking/water shoes for the hike and the swim as there's rocks in the water that can be pointy or slippery. You have to purchase tickets in advance and you want to make sure to PRINT your tickets. The park rangers will ask for them and there's 3 different check points to make sure you have your permit. You are not allowed to park in other lots that are not the one you booked and you can't drop people off then go back and park so make sure you plan for a lot that is close! Lots 3-5 are pretty far in my opinion. Once you get to the main road that leads to Fossil Creek from Camp Verde, you will need to drive through a narrow dirt road that can be a little rough at times. Make sure you bring a good car with good tires. And again, book your permit ahead of time, print it and bring tons of water. It's 100% worth the trip and the hike is beautiful as well. read more

The rangers manners need to improve desperately, some of the worst people I've ever met. Despite all of the advertising I've seen that inspired me to come visit this "beautiful" park, it was one of the filthiest creeks I have EVER seen. They really need to take care of this area better, maybe hire more friendly rangers? To enter we had to show them our parking pass, no problem. But the amount of attitude from these girls was absolutely outrageous. Hire better people, and at least take better care of your park. read more

Worth the wait! Jade green waters are beautiful! Print & sign your permit and bring your photo I.D. They're not playing around anymore. You gotta be legit the permit holder. You can't beat their system. Bring water, food, and a full tank of gas! It's an hour just from the HWY to the 2nd checkpoint where the recreation area is located. For how many cars were in their parking lots, I was surprised at how little people I ran into here. The hike is long but easy (BRING LOTS OF WATER) and there are plenty of little spots off the path to swim in if you don't want to go all the way to the falls - they are pretty hard to find. The fish do nip but they're harmless. read more

Fossil creek waterfall... Let me start by saying you should have an SUV or truck to get here. Off the highway there is a rough 17 mile rock and dirt road that takes an hour to get to the parking lot. It is hard on your vehicle and not recommended for a low sedan vehicle. When you get your park permit, which is required and in high demand, try to get in the 1st parking lot or you will be walking further to get to the waterfall. Bring water shoes. There are several places to swim. The hike in is a bit rough in places. Bring water and pack your own lunch or snack in. Don't bring a big cooler. Whatever goes in Must be carried back out. The falls at the end is well worth the trek. Clear, crisp, beautiful water. Cold but quickly adjusted to. We hung out at the waterfall for at least an hour. There are several places to stop along the river for swimming. A few places you can jump off rocks. Lots of fish that don't bother you. Such a pretty hike and scenery reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest. A drastic change from the brown Verde river. Definitely a day trip, and worth it. I gave four stars only because the drive in and out is treacherous! read more

This review was just due to the events with my luck. I have been waiting for fossil creek to reopen since May. They were closed due to fire. Finally they announced they would reopen July 11, 2018. I bought the permit ahead time for the waterfall parking trail. I heard it was $6 before but now they changed it to $10. Definitely make sure have the permit printed out not on your electronic device or they won't take it. First of all, the location of this place is off road so they give you certain directions on how to get there but they were really off. I luckily had someone in mg group that had experience going there. Secondly, the entrance to the hiking trail has a very rocky and dirt road that's 14 miles before the place. Be cautious and extra careful. When I say careful I mean REALLY careful. I had to learn the hard way that my skid plate of my car got ripped off by a huge rock in the middle of the road. Third, once you get there it's about a moderate 4 mile hiking trail back and forth. The end of the trail is the big waterfall and it is beautiful. Definitely worth it for a instagramable worthy picture. Going on the middle of July had it's pros and cons too it. The pros were that it's Monsoon season, so the weather isn't as hot and there are less people. When I went, no one was there so I'm glad I didn't have a crowded away for my first time there. Cons would be that it's hard to find, difficult hiking trail if you out of shape, and higher chances of storm which can lead to flooding. The ranger warned us that the water would be a brown/red color to it due the monsoons. I feel like the rangers who watch the forest should be better assistance but overall it was a good experience and I hope to come back in the future. read more

hello for starters Fossil Creek is absolutely beautiful. it's a beautiful little creek tucked right in the middle of the desert that you would never expect with waterfalls and all kinds of fun areas. The reason for my one star review is because I started coming there in 2013. That was before the state set up shop there and made it a complete pain in the ass. Now I understand that if you're familiar with the area and you wanna go to the waterfall, you just get spot one. But as somebody who used to go there in 2013 I thought I could just get a reservation and walk to the waterfall (in2024). My friend got the reservation for us and chose spot six and from that point any chance of getting to the waterfall was ruined because they would not let us into the waterfall after that. This is a natural creek with a natural waterfall and it blows my mind the power trip that these people have with not letting us in to see nature. I wish they would pack up and leave this spot alone instead they have completely ruined it by putting government employees all over the place and made it really confusing to get to the waterfall. we used to plan this trip in the morning and get there in a couple hours and have a great day. Now you have to get a reservation and in my opinion if you don't choose spot one and hike to the waterfall fall, you have never experienced fossil creek! this use to be my favorite place in Arizona!!! it's a complete shame what the states done with that place. read more

Permits are now required to park close to the waterfall. The permits have helped eith overcrowding parking. The earlier you reserve the better parking spots youll get. The permits are 10 dollars. Fossil creek is about 2hrs from phoenix. There is about a 17mile stretch of rough road before getting to the parking area. Depending on the parking area you reserve will determine your hike to the falls. It can either be a 1mile hike or a 3.75 mile hike. However all along the trail youll find the creek. The water is clear and cool. There are bathrooms before the trail to the waterfall. The waterfall is beautiful. You can swim to a small cave behind the waterfall. You can also jump from the top of the waterfall after a bit of a climb. The further you go above the waterfall, youll find a swirling bowl of water. The blue and clarity of the water was breathtaking. This area is perfect for everyone of all ages. Just please remember to clean up after yourselves. read more

Took a day off on Thursday in September to enjoy cool water. Free to enter, I heard this place gets busy. If possible, avoid peak time. When we went, it wasn't crowded at all. There are two ways to get there (as far as I know). One is from I-17 to Camp Verde (this side is longer dirt road drive but less hiking to get to the river). Another way which we took is from Payson. From Fountain hills, it was about 1hr and a half drive. From Phoenix, take the beeline highway (87) to Payson, continue north to Pine and Strawberry. Go left on Fossil Creek Road for about three miles to get to the Fossil Springs Trailhead. They have bathroom facility (no running water) at the parking lot. From the parking lot, it's 4 miles hike down to the Fossil Springs. It's about 1,500 elevation difference. Hike down was very easy. They recommend 1 gallon of water per person, the sign said this trail is good for those who can hike 10 miles easily. They rescued 200 people this summer alone. I recommend just to pace yourself as 4 miles hike down means 4 miles hike up later. What goes down must come up, right? It was difficult to hike 4 miles up. Trail itself isn't difficult at all but there wasn't much to motivate me to push harder as fun was already down there. I think it took us just about 2 hours to hike up. Yes we run (jogged) while it was relatively flat around 2 miles area but that didn't last long at all. Despite of 4 miles hike up awaits, I still would like to come back again, possibly stay longer next time if that means I need to carry more. Water was beautiful. It felt cold at first but once I jumped in, cool water felt really nice for my body. Really nice color of the water. I couldn't believe we were still in Arizona. Perhaps it was more enjoyable as it was weekday in September with less people. Some reviewers said trash left by others, the area we went on this particular day, I didn't see any. I was prepared with extra garbage bag to bring trash up but I didn't have to. Overall, I enjoyed my day in the nature and would come back. read more

Fantastic day trip out of Phoenix! Fossil creek is a gem, a total desert oasis! Highly recommended! Difficult hike so it's certainly not for everyone, but overall a wonderful experience if you can handle 10 miles!! Don't bring your grandma, your 7-year-old, or a friend who is in terrible shape. Wear good shoes, pack extra socks, and bring that "moleskin" stuff for blisters! Goggles and an underwater camera would be nice to have while swimming. Don't forget a change of clothes and a towel for after your swim! Took us about two hours to drive from Phoenix. The last section of the drive is a dirt road but is well-maintained so the minivan was able to handle it. Before we got on the trail, we talked to a few park rangers who had set up a table in the parking lot. They told us they've done 200+ rescues this year alone! They warned us to take it easy and bring a lot of water. While my group was prepared, I think it's really nice they are taking a proactive approach to safety. The hike down to the bottom took two hours, and was 5 miles total. We found a secluded spot right next to the water and decided to "camp out" there. (Overnight camping is allowed in certain areas, but we were just hanging out for a few hours.) Ate some snacks to refuel and then hopped in the crystal-clear water. There are tons of fish in the water and if you stand still for too long, they will start nibbling on your feet! It tickled but felt great as my feet were pretty sore from the hike. Our spot was next to three different (but connected) pools so we started swimming there, but moved upstream to see some small waterfalls. Had a great time climbing and jumping off waterfalls, but be careful because some areas are not as deep as you'd think! The water was colder than I prefer (mid 60s) but refreshing after a long, sweaty hike. Right before we left the creek area, we stopped at the springs to fill up our water bottles. So cool to see the water just bubbling up out of the earth! Water tasted great and we didn't get sick so it was clean just like the park rangers said! It was great to have a water source at the bottom, so you really only need to bring water for the hike down. I'm not gonna lie - the hike up was terrible and I was struggling! It was cloudy so temperatures weren't too warm (low 80s) but my feet were killing me! It took almost three hours to hike from the creek to the parking lot. All in all, it was an amazing trip. We brought our two dogs who did really well, but probably could've benefited from some "doggie boots" to prevent their paw pads from ripping. Our bigger dog had some damage to her paws from the hike back up - so sad! :( (I will note, all the park signs say that it is NOT recommended to bring dogs. Our dogs did well, but one ended up with hurt paws after the hike up. It would have been a nightmare if we had needed to carry them out.) Including our drive to/from Phoenix, it was a full 12-hour day. One last note - we didn't see very much trash! Maybe the other Yelpers have been cleaning up after the jerks who leave trash behind. A Few things one pack a lunch for the day because it's a day adventure for sure, you will need a permit, personally I like week days it seems not as busy, you will need a permit during certain times of the year! Are you looking for an adventure to beat the AZ desert heat that includes a cool stream with clean running water and an awesome waterfall? Look no further than Fossil Creek! A lot has been said previously of overcrowding and mass amounts of littering, but these have been put in check by the recent implementation of the permit system. My friends and I parked at the Homestead Lot which is a good 2 miles or so from the Waterfall Trail, our destination. DON'T BE AFRAID TO PARK IN A FAR LOT. I feel like the distances between lots on the map are a little overestimated--definitely did not feel like 2 miles to the trailhead. We saw a few people walking from pretty much the start of the turnoff by the 260. Please do not decide to partake in such a silly venture--you are 12 miles away from the creek and likely won't make it before sundown lol. Also be warned it's a bumpy ride once you're off the 260 so drive a 4x4 high clearance vehicle if you know what's best for you. Once you get to the actual trailhead, you will find the entrance on the left, which instantly begins your descent to the creek. It's always a nice reward to begin hearing the running water as you get closer! Continue on for another mile or so and you'll reach the waterfall. If you're adventurous and love cliff diving, I recommend it on this one. Make sure you can handle 25-ft heights and assess before hand where you plan on landing, as there are some shallow areas that you would not want to shoot for. The water temp was cool but not freezing which added a nice refreshing feel to the otherwise hot day. If you're into exploring, check out the small crevice behind the waterfall. It's super neat to see the water pounding down from inside! Please do everyone who loves this spot a favor and pack in what you pack out and leave no trace! read more

The drive is worth it. It is long, bumpy and frustrating. When you think you can't drive any longer, keep driving. Then drive some more. Then get in a fight with your boyfriend about his driving. And then you will be at the beautiful, peaceful, crystal green creek where all your problems will go away. We park at the last parking lot right before the Strawberry road closure so we can literally get out of our car and walk up to the creek and smaller waterfall. It's glorious. Have fun! read more

It's a beautiful place to hike and have fun, however It's very easy to get lost driving there, the signs to get on the dirt road by the highway were not visible but luckily for us we had someone that had been there before and knew where to turn. There is very little parking available and if you reserve parking far from the hiking trail it might turn into a pretty bad experience. read more

UPDATE AS OF MAY 1st 2016 YOU ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A PERMIT FOR $6 TO GAIN ENTRY. No more just showing up. Permits can be obtained online. This is due to all the litter and overcrowding so this area can heal. fossil creek is an absolutely wonderful blue waterfall location with cliff jumping opportunities upwards of 45 or 50 feet I'm guessing. The water is crystal clear and absolutely refreshing. It's really something special. Arizona has some of the best and unique wildlife locations in all of the country. What's even greater about most of these locations is that they are free (or used to be). With that being said, the fact that this beautiful location near Camp Verde is free is what's ruining it. (No longer the case) I was just there today (2014) and we drove in the road at 8 AM just before the Rangers started to close it off and only allow one car in one car out. By 9 AM until noon there was probably 150 people there. Since it costs nothing to get in everybody comes in droves and completely TRASHES the place. The list of trash and debris left by people is as follows: Glass bottles...check Plastic water bottles...check Cigarette butts... Check Styrofoam coolers(who uses these?!)... Yup Beer cans everywhere (PBR) ... You bet Used diapers... Gag... Yes Shoe soles... Bags of chips ripped open and strewn everywhere... This seems to be a staple here. Way more crap that I don't even want to waste my breath telling you about... Sadly yes I'm going back with a roll of 55 gallon industrial trash bags and I'm picking up next time I'm there and carrying out bags of garbage with whoever else I can guilt trip into helping. I actively watched parents let their kids throw garbage wherever they wanted to. It was absolutely sad witnessing this beautiful wonder get completely degraded by these degenerates. This needs to be a fee site to keep the riffraff out. This use to be something special and now it's just a sordid cesspool. Once this place gets cleaned up I will update my review to at least four or five stars. read more

This is a beautiful long hike, great views, but it IS challenging. DON'T bring your kids or grandma. The four miles down is a blast, but the four miles back up the 1500ft elevation change is brutal (that's the height of the John Hancock skyscraper in Chicago). One of my favorite places ever! It absolutely does not feel like Arizona at all, and that's a good thing! ;) Mary G. is correct that Fossil Creek Road is closed until next year; however, the upper trailhead is still accessible, so while you may not be able to drive directly down to the creek in the comfort of your vehicle, it is still accessible should you opt to take the 4 mile hike into the wilderness. Honestly, I think they should keep the road closed. It's a wilderness area, and should not be treated as a tourist attraction. Additionally, the road closure seems to have cut down drastically on the crowds. I would estimate we saw approximately 60-70 people both near the water and on the hikes down and back today, which is a Sunday. The hike down and back is hard, I will admit. It can be steep in places and there are a lot of rocks on the trail, so watch your step. There is occasional shade but desert plants dominate until you reach the wilderness area, so bring lots of water and wear sunscreen! Plan on 2-3 hours each way, and don't attempt if you are very out of shape. The trails in the actual wilderness area can be hard to follow. There are overgrown plants and lots of rocks in certain areas. Just follow the riverbed should you lose the trail, it will get you to the same place. While the entire river is amazing, the best part in my opinion is the cave just past the waterfall. Swim into it and climb up the walls; you can jump off into the crystal blue water (the back portion has virtually no current) since it is so deep here. There are fallen tree trunks in the water to help you navigate to the cave through the strong currents if necessary. Camping is not allowed north of the Fossil Springs Bridge, but I saw some tents set up there today. Just know that it is technically prohibited. No campfires permitted within 1/4 mile of the river, but gas stoves are allowed. Pack light, because you will be climbing the 4 mile long trail back to the trailhead when you leave. And PLEASE, don't throw your trash on the ground, it ruins the area for everyone. read more

This 10 mile round trip hike to the dam that starts as a descent of 1,500 feet in elevation can be challenging on a hot day as the path is right in the sun's path. You need good shoes, lots of water, a hat and sunblock. I found this challenging cause of the beating sun. BUT the toilet bowl and waterfalls is a great place to rest, swim and relax before you hike up 1,500 feet to your car. If the lot is full you can park at the B&B for $10 and walk 2 miles to the trailhead/parking lot. If you need water there are springs that you can find at the first campsite once you start your descent up at the 4 mile marker. read more

Fossil Hike in my opinion is one of best hidden Gems of Arizona. Minus the dirt road, once you make it to the water hole its just beyond amazing! Clear waters, cool temperature and the water fall is to die for. Last time we did go permits were required, we ended up going to one of the lower parts but even that was amazing! There are two ways to get to fossil creek. One is through Strawberry AZ which is about 4.5 miles one way. One you drive through! I suggest doing the Hike during spring or fall. read more

This place is a desert oasis! My husband and I (out of shape as we both are) decided to go backpacking to the famed Fossil Creek/Fossil Spring. I had never been backpacking before and my husband grew up in boy scouts. haha. Well, he decided that he'd start me out on an easy trail for my first time. We never did find that "easy" trail. Instead, we ended up on the trail that takes you 4 miles down into the canyon at a pretty intense incline. Whoops! Being a female, and apparently a bit overly-hydrated made for some quivering legs trying to hold me up in the "squatting" position. hahaha. Apparently my calves did not enjoy the grade of the trail! Getting down to the bottom made it all worth it! This place is INCREDIBLE! Probably the prettiest place I've been in all of AZ. Yes, that is a bold statement. :) Anyway, we went in May, and it was still awfully warm. I suggest going earlier in Spring, or in November maybe? read more

Beautiful place to spend the day. We got permits to park at Waterfall Trail (closest to the trail.) The parking spots are big enough for big trucks. I noticed all parking areas had restrooms. We were a group of 7 adults and 5 kids. Took a 30 can hand cooler with water and beer and another with kids drinks. The hike wasn't too hard, I personally recommend bringing comfortable shoes and water shoes since the rocks are slippery if you're out of shape you might have a hard time. There's no we're to throw away trash so make sure you bring your own trash bag!!! The water was perfect, at the waterfall the current was a bit strong if you're not a good swimmer. We stayed at the fall for an hr and then headed black to the trail to look for a less busy area. We found a pool not too far from the 2 log bridges. There was ropes hanging from the trees for swing and jumping in the water. I recommend you pack a small snack and lunch if you plan on staying there a while. Great hike! We hiked from the Strawberry entrance a few years ago when not a lot of people knew about Fossil Springs. We only saw one other couple camping there.. The hike it a good 9-10 miles round trip. We started early in the morning and ended up back to our car in the evening time. The Springs were beautiful. Unfortunately when we went it was too cold to swim, but it was still a great experience. Wear sturdy hiking boots! I made a mistake and wore my new hiking boots over my older ones! And it rubbed my feet raw. So make sure you know that your boots are the ones for you. Now I heard you need a permit so make sure to have that prior. read more

Over the years the place went downhill as more and more people caught wind of and made the journey. This beautiful place quickly became an armpit of trash. Here this gem for people to see for FREE got abused. I was appalled how people freely left trash and debris along every nook and cranny of the river and had no feeling of guilt. I quit coming. The crowds, the idiots, the trash just got worse until something sad but incredible happened. This place and access to it became regulated. Yes you pay a small fee to get a parking spot, but with extreme cleanup efforts and oversight this place is returning to its majestical wild beauty. So when I read about people complaining about: 1. Drove up and I couldn't get in. Good! You are probably the types that don't plan properly for spending any type of activity in the desert or mountains and I'd probably be sharing my water with you after you became dehydrated. 2. The roads are not maintained! Great! Again why alter Mother Nature so you can drive right up to trash the place. I for one want people to have to put in effort like hiking (omg exercise!) to be rewarded with this beautiful place. Seriously? Pave the roads so every jack ass can easily access? Go to Big Surf or some other water park if you need convenient parking. 3. They charge to get in! No kidding? Thank your fellow Arizonans who completely trashed this place to the point government regulations had to be set in place. Last time I looked, one US Forest Service agent can't possibly keep up with thousands of people discarding their trash like it's a landfill. 4. Not enough warning signs. The pools are deep and they should provide life jackets.???? Wuhhh? I'm guessing this is the same type of person who sued McDonalds because their coffee was hot. Next thing these idiots will be calling for is a safety railing along the Grand Canyon. 5. Cellular Service is bad! Did I actually read that? This is a wilderness area last time I checked. If you need to play Pokémon that bad, stay home! Yes, I'm admittedly ranting and doesn't apply to everyone. But I petition we need to start giving competency tests for people to even step foot on a trail. Please preserve these state treasures by picking up your trash, not destroying nature, and if it says no camp fires don't start one. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know we have hiking related deaths every year. Most go unprepared and it cost them their lives. If you are writing reviews about Fossil Creek or any other place I'm going to make an educated guess that you have internet access and simply typing in "Fossil Creek" a wealth of knowledge is immediately free for your viewing pleasure and self education. Being ignorant is a choice and you only got yourself to blame. So to prepare to enjoy Fossil Creek 1. Go to www.recreation.gov and purchase your permit. 2. Note area you are parking at and map it out. Read about access roads and decide if you have adequate vehicle to make the journey. 3. You can find all the distances easily to estimate proper water to take and food. If you aren't sure figure at least 6 ounces of water per mile. Then have half that in reserve. 4. Bring trash bags to collect your trash. 5. Review area for types of wildlife in area and educate yourself. 6. Check weather forecast and be prepared for rain, cold, heat, etc. 7. Yes rocks are slippery at river. You won't see a sign, so now you know. 8. There are deeper pools to swim in. If you can't swim, be a safe bet you probably shouldn't be getting in water in the first place. No it's not the US Forest Service job to hand out life vests, man made steps and elevators. If you are choosing to go cliff jumping it's probably a good idea to dive underwater and see for yourself the depth. The water is crystal clear. 9. Bring a first aid kit. Yes their are plants with thorns, sharp rocks, and all the rocks here and everywhere have hard surfaces. 10. Proper shoes. Sandals probably not smart. 11. Sunscreen. Yes you will burn on a clear day whether it's 60 or 110 degrees. 12. Remember hiking down is easy, hiking up not so much if you are not an active type. Such a beautiful place! I'm happy that they have been permitting the area to preserve its beauty! We always try to get waterfall parking lot its closest to the trail head for waterfall trail which is a pretty easy 2mile hike to waterfall! Hike is beautiful with spots to stop along the way and see other spots on creek! The worst part of the whole trip is the 14mile dirt road you have to travel on to get to parking so make sure you have a vehicle that can handle that cuz your car will get BEAT UP!!!! read more

Ok so after many research about this place I was still a little lost so for those in my shoes now...there are 2 waterfalls. 1 is located from camp verde which is called fossil creek and 1 in strawberry called fossil springs. If you are looking for the "toilet bowl or the blue caves then you will wanna go to fossil springs 8 mile hike. You cannot get to both waterfalls from one location so you will have to choose which town and what waterfall you want to see. The other waterfall is fossil Creek and it's on the camp verde side. This is the one I went to. Depending on which parking permit you get will determine how long your hike will be. The closest parking is the water fall parking. Honestly try to get that one if possible. Would not recommend to get homestead unless you absolutely have no other choice it's the first parking lot and the furthest away. From the waterfall parking (last parking) it's a 2 mile hike round trip. It gets extremely hot so walking back from the other parking permits is brutal. Getting there you will be stopped by rangers who will check your printed permit. Do not forget to print your out. You will need to do so. You will be stopped twice to validate. This place gets super crowded! I would recommend getting to the water fall/ taking pictures and going to find your own spot at the river. Coming from camp verde is a rocky road so a 4x4 is recommended and highly suggested however not exactly needed. If you are using a regular car, you will have to drive really really slow. Probably bring a spare just in case. This place is definitely worth it. Don't forget lots of sunscreen and water shoes! read more

My huge family of 30 decided to do a nice little family hiking trip with the kids 2 weeks ago. Myself, never been there before wasn't sure what to expect, I was told it'd be an easy walk through a forest like atmosphere. For the most part it was, but it was also a bit dangerous for the little ones, but we all did great! The water was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking! I'm so happy they enforced a rsvp parking thing now, it's a better way to ensure this little gem is kept clean in my opinion. I will definitely be returning soon! read more

Absolutely beautiful! Please read pros and cons!!! Be prepared... Pros - gorgeous pools of teal green windex colored waters throughout the entire creek. Take the path down to the water or turn off the path to take a dip in your own private natural pool! - floaty tube and inflatable kayak compatible - if ur brave enough, swim around the falls to the cave or jump off the 30 foot cliff - dog friendly trail but I recommend only medium or large dogs who are well behaved - restroom at waterfall parking lot trail (convenient) Cons - don't go unless your vehicle has good shocks, suspension and good tires!!! The rock/dirt road is treacherous for a good hour in a car. If you have an SUV or large pick up, maybe 45mins. - you will drive on the side of cliffs, on this dirt/rocky road. DRIVE CAREFULLY AND FOCUS - limited parking and push back parking. If you get there by 9 or 10, chances are, the waterfall trail parking lot is full and a ranger will advise u to park in the next lot. Just the way it is. - hiking from farther parking lots Helpful advice!!!!!! Pack cold lunches and a cooler in the car. Sunblock and water a must. Backpack is highly suggested. Proper hiking shoes a must. ABSOLUTELY need water shoes at the falls. Our feet hurt walking on the rocks in the water and on dry rocks. Pack a small homemade first aid kit in a ziplock. Wear a hat or visor and t-shirt. Watch children in and near water for fear of being swept away/drowning; same for dogs! Plan for being gone for at least 7-10 hours if you drive from Phoenix. read more

Since the first time I came upon photos of Fossil Creek a couple of years ago I was desperate to get here. It takes some planning though! So be sure to prepare in advance for this fun, outdoor adventure. To start, it's a good 2 hours from Phoenix so it is a pretty long day trip. We parked at the waterfall trailhead which is the last parking lot going in from Camp Verde. I personally am glad they do the permit system (from April-Sept). There is a ranger waiting to check you in so don't try to cheat the system and sneak in. Not gonna work here. We went during the week so it was fairly empty, which was awesome. The waterfall hike is pretty easy. But beware you have to cross over several rocky areas/washes. But I would not call this a difficult hike-again, just be prepared with appropriate shoes. The waterfall itself is breathtaking, serene and most of all FUN! The water is cool and clean, crisp...jump right in-it feels amazing after the hike. If you are going to jump off the cliff-have fun and heed the warning signs. It is very deep in most places, but make sure you know where you're jumping. Side notes: yes there will be other people and some of them will be obnoxious. There was a group of college aged kids smoking, drinking and playing obnoxious music. We of course had our family there trying to enjoy the sounds and smells of nature and could have done without the cig smoke and rap music. But people like that ruin the earth and there's nothing you can do about it. I just wish they would show a little more respect for this place and the people who come to enjoy it. It's not a place to party, that's what a resort pool is for. Speaking of respect, another woman was 'painting' on the rocks. We said something to her and she assured us it was 'washable' but still people come on. Show some respect for this beautiful place and leave it the way you found it! Last note I'd like to say is be prepared for the rough road the last 15 miles. I thought I was but it is really bad. I say this mostly because I suffer chronic pain and I thought all the bumping up and down might kill me lol. It keeps going and going. You have to take it really slow and by the time we got to the parking lot I was already in a lot of pain, so the hike (short as it is) really did me in! So I guess I would say I wish they would maintain the road a little better so that people like me don't actually dread going back. I feel that especially since they have the permit system in place now it would be of great benefit to a lot of people like me who can't ride in the car as long! But other than that, this is a wonderful spot! I hope I get to return someday! read more

Fossil creek is a very interesting area that makes you ponder where you really might be going. First a beautiful drive heading into the canyons on a ravishing dirt road that makes your car shine in golden brown colours. Squeezing two cars against each other hoping you won't be the one to tumble down the mountain. Filling your heart with happiness until you find out that there isn't a trail to the creek. Pro tip- don't tell anyone that there could be snakes in the grass or else you might as well drive 3 hours back to your hotel. Of coarse the creek is cool but unless you know exactly where you're going to find the watering hole then the only thing you will be doing is wading into 12" deep water. So we went to the purple mountain lot 7 parking lot, let me stop you there... no. Go and get yourself a parking permit for one of the lots higher up the creek and then you might find the swimming area. Park rangers tell you the swimming area is only 50 yards off the lot, but this man had no teeth and clearly did't know what he was saying. Nobody is going to swim in foot deep water. After walking exactly 12.2 seconds in the water we realized you can't walk up the creek. No easy access to the waterline. You have to stumble around branches and big rocks to get in. When you have to use the bathroom better plan on using the little stinker yup the little stinker tinker. Overall I'm sure it's an amazing swimming area when you know where to go but in my case I didn't get to experience that. read more

Fossil Creek's Waterfall Trail is a great family day-trip from Phoenix. 1-17N to 260E to Fossil Creek Trail. My total drive time (one way), from 101 & Cactus, is around 3 hrs. Fossil Creek Trail is a 15 mile dirt road, which takes me about 50 min each way, and has plenty of washboard. Your car may very well develop new, permanent rattles after this drive. Once I get onto the dirt road, I let the kids ride in the back of the truck. The kids love the view in the morning, and helps them get dirty and hot, ready for swimming. At the end of a long day of swimming and playing, the ride in the back of the truck allows them to relax and enjoy the scenery in a new way. Waterfall Trail parking lot is at the end of the road, and has some porta-potties. There are two trails from the parking lot, one leads down to the creek, which you can follow along to the waterfall, or stop anywhere along the way to swim. The trail that starts near the porta-potties, and goes up the road a way before turning toward the creek, by far an easier path and leads more directly to the waterfall. It is also much quicker. I like to take the creek-side trail in the morning, and enjoy the amazing scenery and slow walk to the waterfall. I think this trail is fine for 8 yrs old and up, but if you have younger children, or someone who is less able, then the trail directly to the waterfall is better. At sunset, I prefer to take the direct trail back to the parking lot. I've found that the trail along the creek, at dusk, has a lot of mosquitoes, horseflies, and no-seeums. Every time I've gone there are college kids partying and leaving trash and beer cans. It's good to bring a trash bag and help clean up the place as you leave. Good lesson for the kids and also sets a good example for the other visitors. That's how I learned - I saw another family cleaning up, and I admired them for what they were doing. If you are a parent bringing your kids, here are some things that worked for me: Sneakers that can be worn into the water. Same sneakers are fine for walking out - they dry quickly. Sneakers, as opposed to water socks, are good because they have traction and some of the rocks are slippery. Insect repellant if you're going to stay until dusk. Folding chair so you can relax near the water and watch the kids. There are shade trees and you can move your chair around to follow the shade. Trash bags. Waterproof camera so you can take pictures from behind the waterfall. read more

This place is beautiful but my 1 star review is for the system the Rangers use to let people in. We came through Camp Verde and arrived around 8:30am on 6/13. Fossil Creek Rd was open until we drove about 5 miles in, the Rangers had it blocked bc the lots filled up already. They told us it would be 40 min - 3 hours to get in but it's never taken the 3 hours before. We got behind the cars that were already waiting (we were the 5th car). A few hours went by so we checked on the status. Their system is to let all the cars in that are waiting or none. They do not take into consideration how long you've been there, doesn't matter if you're there for 5 hour or 5 minutes. The don't close the road at the beginning WHICH THEY SHOULD bc more cars keep coming down and adding to the wait time for everyone. After 4 hours everyone started getting really antsy and pissed off. The Rangers said their shift was over at 4:30 and once they left it was a free for all to get it and chances of them opening up the gates were unlikely. They hadn't mentioned this previously in the 4.5 hours some of us were waiting. And during this time we watched at least 30 cars come out of the gates. They desperately need to come up with a new system. Maybe letting 5 cars in as 5 cars come out IN THE ORDER PEOPLE GOT THERE. This place is beautiful but I don't know if I'll ever come back bc of this experience. Don't come here on a weekend unless you plan on arriving before 7am or after 4:30 when the rangers are gone... read more
