Wow! What great slice of history, a museum full of spectacular specimens, A town full of mystery, a 1900 ft mine shift that you can walk over (it's covered with glass!), a spectacular mansion which serves as the state museum, and beautiful scenery including a view of the San Francisco peaks in Flagstaff and views of the red rocks of Sedona. We happened upon a fabulous history guide upon walking in. A 50+ year native called us to the front porch of the Douglas mansion (which sits upon some of the mine tunnels!) and delighted us with a passionate 30 minute jam packed history. Not sure if this is a daily event, but I know we were extremely lucky to hear this talk. I cannot wait to go back and learn more. read more

This museum has a lot to go through and it would take you some time. You'll need more than an hour, maybe 1 1/2-2. There is a video that is so fun and worth watching. I wish there was a tour guide or someone to answer questions along the self guided. It does a great job at showing what the city was once like. All the original pieces from the mines are for you to see up close. Worth checking out! read more

Jerome Historic State Park is a great first stop in Jerome. It is located on a hill top and has great panoramic views of the vistas surrounding Jerome. The museum provides a thorough overview of the history of the town and the mines. There is a video that gives the background of the wicked/hauntings of Jerome and the Douglas family. The museum itself has hundreds of photographs of Jerome in the late 1800s all the way until now! There is a huge gemstone exhibit as well, where you can see different gems discovered in the mines. I heard a lot of people say that this place is more haunted than Bisbee, AZ. It's a tiny town with at least 500 residents. The highlight of this town is their museum and their little touristy district. Where you can find small restaurants, souvenir shops and their haunted hotels. You can pretty much check the whole town in one day. read more

Unfortunately, while we were in Jerome, we went to see the museum, the mansion, and when we got up there it was closed there was no sign to indicate that it would not be open on the website. It said it was open till 4 PM. We went at 11:30 so I only got to see the outside of it. Unfortunately I was only passing through on vacation so I don't know when I would be able to get back to see it was pretty bummed out about it. read more

Really glad we stopped here after touring the nearby town (which was disappointing) because this was the highlight. It costs $7 but it is well worth it. The 30 minute video was excellent and did a great job of telling the history of the town. All the ups and downs and ups of this old mining town. Fascinating. The displays in the old mansion were great including some models of the mines themselves and some amazing rock samples. It closes early so leave enough time in your visit to the area to tour this "park". Well worth it! read more

This indoor/outdoor museum provides a lot of information about Jeromes' rich mining history. Admission is $7 for adults and includes a 30 minute movie that entertains and informs about historical Jerome. The two level museum has many displays and artifacts about mining and how that industry grew Jerome to over 15,000 residents at one time. Now it's about 400 and devoted strictly to tourism. This museum can be seen from most of Jerome as it is lower on the mountain and only a 3 minute drive from downtown. It is a nice museum however I give it a 3 overall because I'm not sure how many tourists will be interested in that subject. You decide and it is relatively inexpensive. read more

I visited the Jerome State Historic Park a few times. The museum sits in the old Douglas Mansion. It was built in 1916. The museum is filled with information about the history of Jerome and its people. There is a 3D model of the town and the underground mines and a short video to watch. Along the outside of the museum you will see more displays. The view of Verde Valley from the museum grounds is beautiful. Covid restrictions are in place by limiting the number of people going through the museum at one time and everyone must wear masks. Parking is free. There are a few picnic tables set up for those who want to stick around and enjoy the view. read more

Neat museum to learn about the Wicked Town in the West. The glow-in-the-dark rocks were just like the ones the Smithsonian has.

This place is well worth the $7 per person admission! They have so much information here, it was overwhelming! The movie and self-guided mansion tour were very interesting. I wish more than just a few rooms were set up the way they were when the Douglas family lived there. The majority of rooms are set up with information boards and artifacts. There were some cool models of the town above ground and the underground mining shafts. Outside there were some old mining equipment and a garage with a couple of Mr. Douglas's buggies inside. There's ample parking, clean restrooms, gift shop and gorgeous views of Jerome up on the hill and the beautiful Red Rock buttes below in the distance. On your way out, don't forget to stop at the Little Daisy mine shaft. You can actually look over the shaft...pretty eerie. read more

What an amazing place! Great people running the place, and tons of interesting historical displays.

This is a small state historic park that focuses on the copper industry in Arizona. It is a "day use park" and there is an admission charge. There are several exhibits just outside the entrance to the park itself and those exhibits are pretty interesting on their own. The museum tells the history of Jerome and the copper mining that occurred in and around Jerome. Tours of the museum are self-guided. Lots of exhibits and displays. You should allow at least 30-60 minutes - more if you're really into the history of the area. read more

Be sure to check out the video presentation for a history of the town that's more entertaining than most tourist type videos. There's also a history of the mansion, lots of geological exhibits, history of the family/mansion and lots more. Jerome was founded thanks to the mining industry and its location being a vast source of copper. The mines have since closed, and Jerome now is a ghost town that thrives from tourism. The mining history stays alive though at Jerome State Historic Park, which is housed at Douglas Mansion, the former home of mining executive Jimmy Douglas. There are a load of artifacts and exhibits throughout the mansion. It can feel dense and overwhelming, but you can learn a lot about Jerome and the Douglas family if you wish to spend the time reading and looking at everything. Otherwise, stroll around the mansion and enjoy the wonderful view of the valley. Pick up some of the usual souvenirs at the gift shop, which is located at the entrance of the mansion. The facility is open daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the hours are the typical 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. The museum does not open until 8:30 A.M. though, and the gift shop closes at 4:45 P.M. The admission fee is $7 for an adult. It was worth it for me since I love history, but skip this if you are not into history. You can save yourself the $7 and quickly admire the mansion and view from the parking lot instead. Either way, take a drive up the hill to see the mansion and view. read more

Anyone driving the twisty roads to Jerome should first visit this surprisingly colorful museum. The setting is the Douglas mansion, erected in 1916, by a family from Canada who made it big in the mining industry. Interestingly, the family didn't spend much time at this luxurious adobe home because the pollution from mining didn't make sitting on the veranda the pleasant experience it is today. Fortunately, there is no longer any smog to stifle the views down to the valley or up to Cleopatra Hill. The museum itself is packed with photos, displays, artifacts, and curiosities (such as one of the stone griffins removed from London's Parliament Hill and a buggy loaned to RKO Studios for the 1955 movie Oklahoma that was filmed in Elgin, Arizona). The placards alone are quite informative. I don't recall any museums that I would like to call home but I would gladly move in and set up my comfy lounge chair on the shady veranda. read more

We probably learned the most about Jerome and the surrounding area from this Mansion than anywhere else in the area. Be sure to watch the half-hour movie about the area. We liked it so much we went to the Mine Museum in Jerome (not available at this Park) to pick it up ($20). I was so impressed with this State Park and museum for Jerome. They have a short film about the history of the town that was really well done, humorous & informative. The museum is very extensive, upstairs, downstairs and outside has exhibits. I loved the room full of minerals and they had a florescent booth to see the different minerals glow under blacklight. Outside- the boulders of Malachite and Azurite are what I loved most, while John was happy with all the mining carts and equipment. I buzzed through everything and made it back to the museum store- I had been in a few shops that featured an Arizona copper artist and seen gorgeous pieces that were simply out of my budget. I had bought a small, palm size, heart shaped copper piece in a shop I could see from the State Park and here- I could get a large piece for 1/3 to 1/4 of the prices I had seen around the area! I jumped at the chance to buy a large copper piece to remember Jerome and the surrounding area for the rest of my life! If you see the copper splashes, abstract shapes- that you can hang on the wall or display on a plate holder around the area, in Sedona or even other shops in Jerome- just know, it's a better price here! read more

Have you ever been a ghost town? Well this place is pretty much that but in a good way this Jerome State Park keeps up with history. Back in the days I believe in the 1920's Jerome was actually a very busy place because they did a lot of mining in the area. This park has a video that is pretty interesting and talks about the history and people that lived there. Also they have lots of old stuff from that period all around the house. Upstairs and downstairs. I think if you are wanting to do something relaxing and not feel the heat this is a great place to check out because everything is indoors. read more

My family and I stopped by Jerome while on a family vacation to Arizona and to be quite honest I really did not know much about this town until I watched an episode of Ghost Adventures. We decided to check out Jerome's State Historic park located ~5000+ ft with its spectacular views of the red rocks and the Verde Valley. There is plenty of public parking and the entrance fee is $7 per person to enter the historical museum which was in the Douglas Mansion. The employees were very friendly. This was a very educational experience. In the beginning there was a 20 minute video presentation and introduction on the history of the town of Jerome and the mansion had a variety of history exhibits, antique mining equipment, mining model displays, mineral displays and so much more. It was just very interesting to learn about Jerome which was founded in the 1800s and how it became this thriving copper mining town with a population of 15,000 at its peak and how it became to be today as the largest ghost town in America. There is just so much history in this place and just very fascinating to be able to see it all. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area! read more

Hardly worth 10 bucks, but we only payed eight, so i felt like I got a good deal with an obscure coupon from WHERE magazine. The film was very entertaining and gave us a good history of the area, but not exactly a true history. The town's nickname was "The Wickedest town in the West" but that seedier side (which was played up in Tombstone) was downplayed and ignored in this video. Still, there are plenty of exhibits and tidbits to check out inside the mansion and the dude who the town was named after never even stepped foot in Jerome. The views from outside are pretty spectacular either looking out towards the valley or up at the big J and the town. Mining really doesn't interest me, but the town and the history of its rise and fall are both worth the price of admission. read more

The ranger at the desk was rude. A sign outside said an hour wait, yet people walked in right past us. We had been waiting for about 30 minutes. When we got to the desk and we're told there would be a wait, we explained that we had been waiting and the other people walked right past us and were admitted. With an attitude, he responded, "ok well you need to come talk to me." Well there was no sign saying "come talk to me," it said to wait. It was rude and unfair. The view is nice. Glad we got to experience that, but we were very disappointed.This was the ONLY park, state or national, in Arizona that an employee was rude. read more

Took the wrong road going into Jerome with my nephew, and ended up at the Visitor's Center. The Visitor's Center is a bit past the actual town, but well worth the detour. We enjoyed all the history, and old mining equipment. When you go to the gemstone room definitely walk behind the black curtain and turn off the light. The stone actually glow...a truly phenomenal site! Highly recommended. "This historic house museum is devoted to the history of the Jerome area, mining, and the Douglas family. Drive up the hill ~ park & enjoy the picnic area with stunning views. Then go inside & watch the 28-minute video which is very informative. Jimmy Douglas designed & built the 2-story 8,700 sqft adobe mansion in 1916, to host Investors & Mining Officials as well as house his family. Oh, if those walls could talk! I tried to visualize the elegance & ambiance of this showplace in its heyday when it was fully furnished. Very large rooms & wide hallways make it obvious that it was built for entertaining. Electricity / Steam Heat / CENTRAL VACUUM SYSTEM!!! / & other innovations that were rare for that period:: Wine Cellar / Billiard Room / It's on a hill overlooking his Little Daisy Mine, a very lucrative endeavor that operated from 1916-1939. I couldn't stop reading & studying the many exhibits. Rock & mineral specimens are displayed, as well as a comprehensive look @ the Douglass family & their influences. I was fascinated by the 3-D model of Jerome in 1937, which shows the underground mines / fault lines / train tunnel. Many artifacts from the mining industry are outside on the huge veranda. We visited the Douglas Mansion. It was reasonably priced for the tour. It is self guided. I wish that we would of had more time to read all the information at each display. I kept thinking how wonderful it would have been to of lived there back in the day. The state ranger said it cost $150,000.00 to build in 1916. The family could not sell it in 1062 for $10.000.00 so they donated it to the state. The Audrey Head Frame Park is located just outside the entrance to the Douglas Mansion. read more
