Stopped in for a cone treat on the way home from geocaching. Ordered small half n half dipped and small vanilla cones at $11.93! Paid cash because they charge to use card. Service was ho hum. Cones were good size, ice cream was creamy but the actual cone was stale. I asked if they had a restroom- nope. Ok, they may be exempt from providing one due to age of building but must have an employee one in which peeps with medical conditions may use. Essentially the place was empty, filthy, old and not your typical welcoming beach town establishment. This was always our stopping place for an ice cream treat but may reconsider our options. Stopped by Foster's Freeze in Santa Cruz for a classic soft serve and it totally hit the spot. Got the 1/2 chocolate, 1/2 vanilla swirl and it was perfectly smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet. For years now, my Bride has regaled me with tales of Foster's Freeze, a family owned burger shack in Santa Cruz, justly famous for their milkshakes. So while we were in town we had to stop in for lunch. We both got Jalapeño Spicy Chicken sandwiches, and split an order of krinkle cut fries. The sandwiches were crispy, spicy, and delicious. She got a triple berry shake which was bursting with berry flavour. I had a cold-brewed mocha shake, which is the most coffeelicious shake I've gotten in years! The Kid had an Extreme Bacon Double burger and a Red Velvet shake. I swear he likes red velvet mostly because I think it's gross. Well, the ice cream is good, but that's about the extent of the positive experience. My Sister sat down on one of the benches inside, and it collapsed underneath her and bruised her leg significantly. We were refunded for our order, and my sister was able to hobble to the car and wanted to continue our road trip, so that was that, but I would recommend anyone going her to be careful if you intend to sit down on anything. There are no bathrooms here, and not much interior decor that tells me it's a Foster's unlike some other Foster's I have been to. Also, I would recommend that you make sure the height of your ice cream cone matches the height you're supposed to get on the display. My sister should hopefully be recovered in a week or so. 3 Stars is more than generous for this review. read more

This isn't my first Fosters Freeze, but I'm honestly a little disappointed by this location. We were looking for something to eat for dinner since most other restaurants were already closed. We were also looking for something close to our hotel that was open and this Fosters Freeze was the only one. Parking is very limited. I think if I could remember correctly, there were only 10 parking spaces. We actually ended up parking next to the dumpster. The service was a little slow, but I couldn't tell how many employees were working. It looked like there were probably only 3 or 4 employees inside? But it was a little slow, slow to the point where they had to open another register. The guy who helped us was nice though. When we got our food, I feel like it wasn't fresh. It definitely wasn't warm. The fries were also a little soggy. Not sure if the fries had been sitting there, but they weren't warm either. The burgers we got weren't great. I know this place is meant for their ice cream, but honestly if you're gonna have other menu items, then they should at least be decent. Another thing that was weird was that they didn't have ranch. When we got our food from the window, we had asked for ranch and a homeless person walking behind us yelled "Their ranch isn't real!". I just thought it was a typical crazy person yelling random stuff, but when we tried it I knew what he meant. The 'ranch' they gave us tasted more like tartar sauce, which is weird because I don't remember seeing fish & chips on the menu. But overall, we were pretty unsatisfied. We won't be coming back. It had a deceiving darker chocolate color but lacked the flavor and it was a little grainy. Rated 5 on my list. The guy that helped us was very nice I think he was the manager. Homeless addicts over dosing on heroin on the Patio is really disconcerting. This place is in an ok neighborhood so it's sad to see this happening here. Outside where the benches are were filthy dirty and the pavement the benches were on probably haven't been pressure washed since the place opened. Of course...no bathroom. As immigrants, my parents started life in the states working multiple jobs while going to school. There weren't many opportunities for them back in the day so they worked hard, hustled, and saved until they were able to open their first Bay Area business, a Fosters Freeze. As a kid growing up in the business, this chain has a special place in my heart and when my girlfriend and I passed by on our way to the Boardwalk, I just had to duck in for some nostalgia. We ordered a mint Oreo shake and classic root beer float to share. The shake was a classic spin on a favorite and hit the spot for me. The root beer float was good too, though the root beer tasted a little flat. For better or for worse, nothing has really changed in the last 30 years and the chain's identity is pretty much untouched and it doesn't seem like it has evolved at all. The drinks we ordered were refreshing and I really would have liked to try their burgers too, but were weren't that hungry. There's an outside ordering window and outdoor tables in case you bring your dog around. I hope it's around for a long time to come so I can revisit a slice of my youth when I'm an old man.
